Hey all, I plan on opening part 3 with additional/added breakdowns of points you suggest on this comment, be it further explaining something I say here or in part 2, or wanting me to talk about something I may have missed. So let me know down below and I might address it!
At least the Gokaigers aren't as bad as the Reiwa sentai. Especially Donbrothers and ESPECIALLY King-ohger who barely qualify as little better than the villains.
Would probably have loved it if you talked about also how the great east Japan earthquake affected production, as they originally intended the previous 10 sentai prior to Gokaiger. After the quake, so many past sentai actors got back into character over social media that the team behind Gokaiger made the change.
One thing I really love about Gokaiger is that the cast’s chemistry and love for each other and their roles. The fact they returned together multiple times after their season ended, and each time it always feels like they never truly left and genuinely look so excited to be back in their characters. The video of the final episode where they wrapped up and they just got overwhelmed by the emotions still gets me.
The fact Gokaiger was filmed in the aftermath of 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami while some veterans of Super Sentai are appear more than just a cameo to show their unity of Japan and its people from the tragic calamity that befell them was so special.
I agree to an extent but Power Rangers and Super Sentia are not and never will be the same show, no matter what people state because Super Sentia is the premiere super hero team in japan, while in America, which is where Power Rangers is primarily targeted, is just a popular kid show in the ninety’s that was about selling toys and being extremely cheap to make that somehow is still around.
I think their personalities are handled a lot better than you think they are. While Marvelous, Luka, and Joe might seem more selfish and brash at times, it's more of a result of their personality and they aren't as piratey and adverse to teamwork as they seem. However, even early on, they act more like Robin Hood style bandits rather than pirates. As Linkara called them "pirates ironically". This is even more so when you include the flashbacks. Despite Marvelous's personality, he frequently endangers himself and the Gokaigers as a whole to help people. He just doesn't openly admit it. One of the first things that Luka does is pawn off one of her pieces of jewelry so that the Gokaigers will have money to spend while they are on Earth. Joe's isn't revealed until later on though. Doc and Ahim are definitely the more conservative of the group and their passive personalities are what contributes to their feelings of worthlessness despite their contributions to the crew. They see physical strength as more valuable and that is what contributes to their feelings of inferiority. This is especially true of Ahim, who lacks practical skills in her flashbacks. The follow up specials also do add a lot more to Marvelous and Luka. A little to Joe and Ahim too, but I wouldn't say by much. But ultimately, there's a limit to what you can do when you're locked into 1 or 2 tribute episodes per set of Rangers. The tribute episodes are also meant to invoke the atmosphere of the episodes of the original series as well. This is why Carranger, the episodes Turbo are based on, are so ridiculous. Carranger was a parody of the Sentai series, essentially the Akibarangers and High School Rangers before they were a thing. This is why the Magiranger episodes, based on Mystic Force, are more about bravery and courage. Those were the things those shows were about. Arguably, where Super Megaforce failed is that they interchanged a lot of character stories in order to match the Sentai footage. Troy borrowed elements from Joe, but so did Noah. Gia and Emma also ended up splitting aspects of Luka and Ahim too. The result of this was much more inconsistent characterization. Combine that with the lack of moral lessons provided by the tribute episodes that Gokaiger had and you end up with far less development and why Super Megaforce as a whole was a messy failure.
Not to mention Megaforce barely developed any of it’s characters to begin with so any connection to the legacy rangers just was nonexistent. The only connection drawn was that they are both ranger team and a new power up
The characters in Megaforce had bland personalities, but they had something. When Noah started to act like Joe Gibken to fit the footage, training alone, with two swords and in a tank top, you know Super Megaforce lost the whole sense of coherence. Megaforce had something, and it could (and should) developed that potential, but Super Megaforce didn't care about anything except "ACTION!".
i was obsessed with the captain and the whole team as a whole but CAPTAIN MARVELOUS WAS a hoss of a leader and he needed to be due to everyones personal characteristics.... i love love love this season
Always found it interesting how the Gokaigers match up with the Straw Hat pirates: Marvelous and Luffy are both strong and inspiring captains Joe and Zoro are both swordsmen Doc and Sanji are both cooks for the crew Luka and Nami are both obsessed with treasure Aime and Robin are both sophisticated yet powerful Gai and Usopp are both fanboys that prove themselves
It's more of a contractual problem. The deal between Saban and Toei allows Toei to dictate that seasons must be adapted. This is also why they had to go back and adapt GoBusters after the fact. Second, contracts nowadays are usually for somewhere between 24-26 episodes a season, making it impossible to fully adopt a season. This is why even Samurai was separated into the second Super Samurai season to fully adapt Shinkenger and Ninja Steel was divided into two seasons for the same reason.
I would argue that Toei played an role how big of said role is up to you to decide on why MegaForce failed because of having to adapt two different sentais at roughly an year apart but the writers aren't off the hook nor is the production crew as well. Or Saban. Maybe if they just used the zords of this sentai and have the Megaforce team use cards to change into past Rangers and summon the zords instead.
Megaforce is the complete stain of embarrassment and no one will live it down in the history of Power Rangers franchise. It botched up both Goseiger and Gokaiger at the same time in its own anniversary.
One thing I'd like to suggest about Marvelous, Joe, and Luka, is that I think it's important to remember the target audience. To the kind of children who loved Super Sentai, the value of calm, self-assured warrior types were probably self-evident. Whereas the important contributions Don and Ahim give are the sorts of things children might take for granted. Children don't always see the effort it takes for parents to provide them with good meals all the time, or the value of a good peacemaker. Kids largely don't pretend to be the uncertain guy being pushed around a lot, they pretend to be the swashbuckler cracking one-liners.
I think what made Gokaiger so iconic was that it was a celebration of Super Sentai. Having spend over 35 seasons worth of content, the creators wanted to do something that would honor its tremendous run. And with the amount of past sentai rangers who volunteered to be on the show, it tells that creators cared so much about its history. Super Megaforce, one the other hand felt like this was something that was just there for the sake of being there. It feels like it was a season that the creators had to create on the account that they would be adapting Gokaiger. It doesn’t feel like a grand celebration of Power Rangers like Forever Red, but rather something that just had to be done for the sake of being done. They didn’t understand what made Power Rangers so great in the first place and that is what lead to it’s downfall. So, long story shot, while Super Megaforce was a cop out to Power Rangers, Gokaiger was a celebration that honors Super Sentai.
Gokaiger was originally intended to have cameos from past rangers who introduced new toy upgrades. Post earthquake, as others have noted, the series was re-tooled somewhat to include more Sentai alumni. As far as the Galactic police angle, you probably need to watch the Gavan vs Gokaiger movie as part of this.
I hope you also catch the 10 year anniversary movie for this season. It was so good! Honestly this is my favorite sentai season. The call backs, the characters, the fight scenes, everything was just what you'd want for an anniversary. Its just a shame our version got ruined by various ruins. They could have easily adapted this one, but made it make sense within the Power Rangers universe. They even could have kept the characters as aliens - since we do have several alien planets, Terra Venture. Just combine two dissimilar seasons into one...ugh.. PLUS the actor for Megaforce...ugh. He would never have been able to truly be Cpt Marvelous. No one can be Cpt Marvelous. He's arguably one of the best Reds. PLUS HE'S GOT HE PIRATE COAT. C'mon! WE COULD HAVE HAD PIRATE OUTFITS FOR OUR RANGERS...
you see gokaiger worked bc ppl who were in super sentai series loved doing them and it was a great exp unfortunately its a very different case for power ranger actors
Gokaiger was the 3rd SS series I ever watched and i think my favourite thing about it is while yes it leans heavily into the anniversary stuff you don't have to know about every sentai team to enjoy it although I definitely liked the series that extra bit more on my rewatch after knowing the teams that came before, but they did a good job for the most part of giving enough information about the team or single member that shows up that allows you to understand the episode and sometimes their powers a little more.
Dekaranger was the first full sentai show I ever watched, so it holds a special place to me, but Gokaiger is such a great season. As sad as the circumstances were that made it what it was, they worked hard and made the show extra special.
Fun fact about the series, Ahim actually meets the most sentai legends (probably because she and Joe and the only ones to meet GekiRed and GaoRed, and she and Luka are the only ones to meet GoPink). The only one she misses out on are the ones who only Gai meets… and MagiRed, which is funny considering how Ahim uses his powers just as much as Marvelous
Not really, it’s more like needing context for the character rather than his story relating to his appearance in Gokaiger. Since he is the epitome of an anniversary character before the such in the franchise and only showed up for a Boukenger special. As for why he created the Red Pirates was likely because he was the only being able to track and gather the powers.
Interestingly, I had a dream about the Gokaigers last night without even watching the show (this is probably why I always have pronounced Ahim Ah-heem). Basically someone who joined the Gokaigers but left pre-series who turns the Planet into Breaking Bad: The Reality Series or something and Marv can't stop him for some reason
just a personal side note thought but I still say AkaRed could be adapted for Power Rangers as either a manifestation/embodiment of the Morphing Grid itself or remnants of Zordon's good energy reborn through the Morphing Grid
Basco criticizes Akared as someone who wanted to use the treasure for Earth since day one and that he wanted to use the treasure for themselves as a trio, Marvelous shuts him down out of a love he feels for Earth, not because Akared was morally questionable
Looks like it's hard to Joe & Luka's actors to come back, Yuki Yamada busy with his drama & live action movies, and M.A.O with her voice acting career in lot of Anime
Gokaiger is not my favourite season, that would be Boukenger. But It was the first one i watched all the way through after being thoroughly dissapointed in Super Crappyforce. And after learning a bit more about sentai and re-watching it, some episodes (the Liveman tribute especially) hit a lot harder and I loved it even more. The fact that the manga doesn't end in 40 tankoubon or less means its garbage, i don't want a series to outlive me in terms of runtime, that's not entertainment
@@tedjomuljono3052 I used to feel the same way, which is why I never got into One Piece for the longest. But then I gave it a try over a year and a half ago, and now it's one of my favorite things ever. Never say never. Watch or read at least the East Blue Saga, and _then_ come back and tell me it's not worth it. Don't call it garbage until you give it a chance.
Junko Komura was involved in Gokaiger, one of the best Sentai. Both LuPat and Zyuohger were good but I don't know what happened to her in Zenkaiger. Zenkaiger in my opinion is the worst Sentai. It not only lacks character development but it also ruins Sentai continuity that had been established at that point.

Watch or read at least the East Blue Saga, and _then_ come back and tell me it's not worth it. Don't call it garbage until you give it a chance.
YO
Junko Komura was involved in Gokaiger, one of the best Sentai. Both LuPat and Zyuohger were good but I don't know what happened to her in Zenkaiger. Zenkaiger in my opinion is the worst Sentai. It not only lacks character development but it also ruins Sentai continuity that had been established at that point.
