I remember loving this song when the Pieces of Right Album came out over 40 years ago. Still a great song. I wish they would start playing this song in concerts. Another great song from the album that they don't do in concert much is SING FOR THE DAY. It is a beautiful song.

You need to get their Blu ray concert of them playing this and Sing for the day too! I have it pumping through an Onkyo Dolby digital 7.1 audio along with it presented on an eleven ft wide by 5.5 ft high DLP 1080p projection image. Truly breathing!

"Lords of the Ring" from the 1978 "Pieces of Eight" album is James "JY" Young's finest vocal performance of his entire STYX career. The vocal melody is superb and he really brings this song to life - The perfect choice! Nod to Dennis DeYoung on having him sing it and I say that preferring Dennis's voice on most songs. It's one of the greatest progressive rock songs ever recorded. I feel like we are living in some parallel universe where "Lords of the Ring" didn't become a MASSIVE HIT.

BUT, I have always thought that the subject matter of this song as having something to do with the Lord of the Ring books by Tolkien or medieval times or some ancient time in human prehistory, , NOT about a circus ring which is what some of the bands visuals depict. Circuses are creepy and depressing.

Seems that the song has connotations of Religious base of Super beings in Gothic Robes with Magical Rings only bestowed and worn by themselves with Awesome Superpowers(whatever those powers may be, ie: transcending and bridging time and space , eternal life mystery, destroying all disease with only a thought and channeling it thru glowing Rings which they possess, Folding space, Time travel etc...), overshadowed by the idea of Clowns and Ring leader in a Circus tent . I believe the meaning is deeper and super imposing those images of super beings exercising thus powers on the Jumbotron behind them would have confused the concert audience to the true meaning of the song as Awesome as the song is...
