Every time I introduce myself and mention what I do, people's first reaction is "so I am guessing you are disliked at work". My reaction ..."not really"
I think people find validation from their work and when an internal auditor points out control failures which are factual some people take things personal. This is the biggest challenge and driver for difficult stakeholders.
Some stakeholders also aren't aware that the internal audit function does get independently audited so there is a level of independence, objectivity and integrity that needs to be maintained irrespective of friendships and rapport.
The culture of the firm sets the tone on how IA is received. Unfortunately for many organisations it is a regulatory tick box. IA does have a role in collaboration with Risk and Compliance (2nd line) in educating the organisation that they are all risk managers and control are safeguards that are beneficial. IA is really there to help the organisation meets it's objectives and keep people out of jail, incur fines and reputational damage.
I agree rapport is so important. Using continuous monitoring in an informal setting in addition to more formal routes can be so helpful with this especially if your audit universe is too large and can't dedicate the time to keep the rapport going.
Great job sharing about the profession. I have only ever worked as an internal auditor and not external so I can't compare. It's refreshing to watch your channel. Watching you tempts me to start a youtube channel covering IA career in the UK.
    Keep up the great work!

Mgmt should keep in mind, better to have IA bother you, than the SEC/FBI. Do you have your perp walk suit? Do they know what size orange suit they want?

Great video Stephie. I love Internal Audit but I feel my company doesn't care for promotions. However, I love working in different projects and learn more about the company.

Hi Steph, I know you’ve gone over topics about toxic work environment, can you give advice about dealing with micromanaging seniors or managers?

    Hey Stephie,
I work in Big4 Tax and I have been contemplating the switch from tax to audit and to a Mid Tier firm. It seems like Mid Tier has a little better work life balance. Would you say that Mid Tier allows you to work more on clients in different industries or at least have a bigger variety? I find that at Big 4, you get staffed on one big client and it takes up all of your time.

I think we're closer to being an "enemy" than a "friend", but the truth is we exist in a gray area. Let's be honest, if you were a General Manager or a Controller of a division, do you want to see us walk in the door? Of course not!
I was in IA back in the eighties for a large Fortune 500 company. My total BS line was that "we're here to help", LOL! I know nobody bought it, but you have to at least put on an act that you
are trying not to completely screw them over. And truthfully, nothing we ever wrote about in our reports was acted upon, corporate management is always on the side of operations, not IA.
We are viewed as meddlesome pains in the ass, and are only there because internal controls are mandated by the SEC, and we are a part of that.
