  • Welcome to Powered by Nyame! I’m your guide and host Kwasi Konadu, aka Rayon. This week’s episode targets prayer, asking a simple yet fundamental question: to whom are you praying and does the form of prayer matter? All prayer is an appeal, a communique with something of the spirit and divine but this exchange is no simple ask and you shall receive. Stay tuned!

If we don't know to whom to pray to get human, time-relevant answers, then what good is it to petition a Creator who doesn't honor human time? If prayer works, then we are grasping at straws in terms of getting them answered. I do have trouble conceptualizing that we, the product or children of the Creator/Nyame, can comprehend a concrete time narrative, but a Force described as Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent doesn't.

Greetings. Great questions. The matter of time isn’t about grasping, for one would at least assume a Creator/God force would have the capacity to understand more than human affairs. Time, like time zones and equators, are human inventions to conceptually map out and organize this world. Said force isn’t bound by those conventions, the same way a spirit can move through matter, say a wall, a human body subjected to human conventions can’t. Try walking through a brick wall :-). what’s immediate or now to us is not to said force; it doesn’t operate by nor it is bound by our laws/rules/conventions. And, finally, answers come in different forms, sometimes right in front of our faces and we still can’t see it because our expeditions are govern by those conventions. The cosmos and our humble place in it doesn’t work that way.

I would ask: "What" are we praying for? Who do I pray to when I need a financial increase in my life? Who do I pray to for a romantic partner? Who do I pray to when my children are sick and need healing? Who do I pray to when I am depressed and cant figure out how to make the best decision in a matter? What I am praying for isn't always received. So am I asking for the wrong things? Or am I asking the wrong source for what I need?

The “what” or the contents of our prayer is important, of course. But my argument about “who” is that the target or recipient of that prayer is essential to actualizing “what” is prayed for. The contents by themselves is a wish without wish or a mail without stamp-neither are going anywhere.

Great point of speaking of Allah as originally a minor deity. Muslims don't wanna speak about that

I'm kind of confused about this whole prayer thing. What if one person is praying for rain and the next person is praying for it not to rain? How is it determined which prayer is answered?

Greetings. That's fine, but the question I posed is not "what" is prayed for but rather to whom is the prayer toward? If a person asks, dare I say, pray the car mechanic fixes their credit score, they are in trouble. To whom a request is made, especially divine origination and spirit in form, bleeds into the response, in whatever form it comes (if it comes at all).
