Marched Concord,DCUK 85-89 and the scouts were a huge inspiration.Watching this showcases what drum corps is all about.Pure,raw sound and emotion,a long way from what we get today.
I teared up watching this (during this painful COVID-19) shutdown)... incredibly moved by the heart & soul of these alumni (spanning 70 YEARS!)... on the UW Madison field where I marched four wonderful years (69-73) in the UW Marching Band. I flash on the cherished memories of watching the Scouts practice near my home in the 60's (Olbrich Park)... and Drum Major Ray Luick trying to get me to join (I had summer commitments). I loved the old style entrance and retreat (and G bugles)... often playing You'll Never Walk Alone (tingles and tears). And I loved the Drums on Parade parades around the capitol square (often in diamond formation)... and the thrill of going to the first DCI championships in Whitewater WI. Many years later (after being away from Madison for 30 years, returning after midlife meltdown)... I got a chance to attend these 2007 DCI championships (the finals... not knowing about the alumni show at semi-finals)... scalping a VIP ticket for $40. WOW! And I later had a serendipitous encounter with one of the drum majors (in a wheel chair on State St)... a very heart-warming connection of honoring and appreciating. And then had a serendipitous encounter with former director Bill Howard (at a printing shop he owned)... thrilled and honored to have the chance to express what the Scouts had meant to me (even getting tingles now). I sincerely thank and honor ALL the Scouts... for who you are... what you've offered... and what you've meant to me. Watching your videos (over and over) has helped me cope with deep dark depression.... and give me hope (and juice) to walk through the storm... to dream a new future... and not feel alone. Madison just rips on this tune. This performance was incredible and gets the blood flowing! Thanks for this...Madison is an early influence back in the late 70's early 80's to marching music and rudimental drumming....DCI style! Love it!

Fully agreed,... I was in '76 '75 and '74 I was competing from 12 - 14 years of age and went open class with The Northstar from Kitchener Waterloo. Our goal was to 25 all our instructors were fired on tour, and we missed top twenty-five... we placed 27th in Boulder Colorado. The best ever drum corps show performed. I talked to Scott Stewart the year after and he said it was by far his most prized project. 12 double C's at the end..................as we said in the 70's "what a gas" I have performed with Greg Jarosz.....my high note artist friend, and Chris Forbes. I don't know if Chris was in this or not.
Tell me, what other corps could put out the call, have 225 people show up, have 60 hours of rehearsal and put on a show like this? The answer is NOBODY! This display shows you the breadth and depth of the Madison influence, and only the people who were exposed to the drum corps activity can understand.

I’m a female alumni and was part of a northeast female Corp which I joined back in 1974 and went against the Madison Scouts plenty of times... “Young people, this is what it’s all about”. The Madison Scouts Alumni Corps members had to be dedicated to practice their butts off and put on a Class "A" show like this. The RoyalAirs Alumni Corps did the same thing. There are still a number of alumni corps that are out there. The Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni may be the largest and most consistent, although there are a number of other great corps doing the best to entertain and bring us back to a vey special age of our great hobby.
I've watched this at least six times… deeply moved every time. It triggers my deep love for the Scouts going back to watching them practice at Olbrich in the 60's and 70's (when they did their moving retreat to YNWA)… and a serendipitous encounter I had last year with the alumni drum major (in a wheel chair on State St). Thank you for performing and posting… and the top notch filming.

With the front drum pit taking away from visual effect, this shows the true example why we need to increase the number of performing members on the filed. I am good friends with a lot of alumni and this shows dedication with so little hours of time to bringing a performance to the field. This moment will live forever in these guys hearts.

I first heard the Scouts over 50 years ago on a Fleetwood recording of the 1961 VFW Nationals. They were impressive then and they've never failed to impress.
Had to change my underwear before I posted. This is what it's all about. Loud, fun, energetic, a lil sloppy maybe, but a total rock concert! Get the butts out of the seats and throwing babies!! Not sitting in silence afraid to clap and scream (which we loved)! No trying to interpret some deep meaning while trying to ignore the guy talking on the PA or the bird chirping sound effects. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!! Wish I could've seen that live. Saw Madison in 88 and SCV at the same show, that's what made me decide to march the next year. All about entertaining the crowd!
I've always been surprised that the Madison area has never had a DCA corps. The closest are The Kilties in Racine (which has had many former Madison Scouts march with them).
I was there! These are bugles. Do you know DCI changed their definition of bugles to now mean french horns and trombones? What a joke. I truly miss hornlines like these. Sad and happy at the same time.

Jim Mason was not involved and everyone knows that to be competitive now you have to follow what the big boys are doing. The dci judges picked Madison apart during Stewart's last year's as director for refusing to match Bb horns. They changed in 2004(?) when Salas came on board following Stewart's retirement. Same thing happened with Pioneer, the Troopers, etc. Look at their placements in 99 (before the change), 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05. All corps that wanted to keep bugles and not sign contracts with big instrument dealers and resell every year were drummed out of placement.
Real drum Corp. Not the confusing and non entertaining stuff of the corps today. Recognizable music with power and passion. Dci don't forget your roots.

This is what Drum corps is all about. even though i marched with corps in the UK, all corps in this country revelled in what DCI did and the amazing music and performances, until you got rid of G Bugles, added amplification and sound effects and allowed a host of garbage (props) onto the field, and now in 2021, have poncified it with the effeminate costumes and dances for the woke lgbt brigade
Me too, i left DCUK in 1984. I still watch these 80s and 90s DCI Shows today. These days the shows are too technical and the music, although very well played isn't the same. There is a lot to be said about playing a Tune from start to finish and being able to sing it back.
I marched DCUK 83, 84 and 85. Totally agree with everything you guys have said. Its just not the same nowadays as what it was. As talented as the kids are and we all know the effort that goes into it all, the shows now just dont have that same WOW factor. Id love to see some of the corps take a stand and go back to how it should be, get rid of the sound effects, amplification, props etc, take it back to the kids and their instruments making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up
No offense to ANY corps of today (2000-2018) BUT, HOWEVER, that show kicks the CRAP out of ANYTHING, PERIOD, that was done this year.....NO props!....Except for: Great playing, rifles and flags, PERIOD!...BTW, I have been playing for 35 years (drummer) and that was THE most entertaining show I have seen since Spartacus!
