Fun fact to display how true to science this show is, the creators explained how ships that would experience high G´s, such as military vessels like the roci, would need the pilot to be able to literally do everything with only using his voice or moving the tips of his fingers, since moving your hands or arms in double digit G´s is what one might call unpleasant, hence why the essential controls are that small and close together near where his hand would normally rest. Actually, that thing Alex was using that you thought is a volume nob, is a 3D navigation device from a company called 3DConnexion. They make a joy-stick type device, that accurately tracks how much you tilt it, either side to side or back and forth (that is, pitch or roll), and how much you twist it (yaw), it also tracks how much you push and pull it lineally, either side to side, back or forth, or up or down. In other words, it tracks in 6 degrees of freedom. I actually use that exact device to do 3D modeling in SketchUp. Because of the 6 DoF, it actually makes perfect sense to use as a tool for maneuvering a ship, as you would want to control it on all of those vectors.
Also, he’s using it for the thrusters/fairly fine adjustments there so it makes sense to be a different form factor than some bigger more typical joystick. In some other scenes, when maneuvering in combat (though maybe also just later season set changes?) they use more typical joysticks (but 2 of them to have the full 6 deferred of freedom control).

Agreed this can help understand the flow of the show. Both season 2 and 3 have around mid season break points that line up (more or less) with book endings and act more like a usual season end would. It works very well, though.
It's what makes the end of season 2, in my mind, less fun than the book version of the same moments (Avasarala and our as-yet unrevealed martian) being in a far worse position than they are in the book, as for the show it's a season finale, while in the book, it's a mid-book bit of showing off for just how clever Avasarala is.
I'm really impressed by yall's deductive reasoning skills. Not spoiling whether you're right about anything or not, but you are definitely analyzing the show from the right angle. Regarding how fucked Eros is... the combination of poverty, high population density, lack of competent government, and enclosed environment make it possibly the most vulnerable place in the Solar System to an infectious disease outbreak. You are right to be worried.
Book 1 is covered in the first season and the first few episodes of season 2. So while the season finale is pretty good, it won't answer everything covered in the first book. It is cool how it works out because the show shifts fundamentally after the end of Book 1 in the middle of season 2. Every scene in the episodes are not wasted or are filler scenes. Scenes like those with Chrisjen Avasarala on Earth may seem like charity scenes for the character, but they are not. For example, there was a scene from the last episode (or the one before) where Errinwright told Avasarala that Earth has a spy on Tycho Station. That was the guy with the bionic eye (or perhaps it a smart contact lens.)
I really appreciate that both of you pay attention and follow the story well - it can be frustrating watching reactors who miss important details (for whatever reason) and then they spend the rest of the video asking questions that they were given the answer to but they missed it. Nerdy... you've mentioned "network television" in several reactions and I think it's important to note that A) the phrase "network television" historically doesn't refer to Cable TV networks (but I understand the point you're making), and B) Syfy only paid for cable broadcast rights to the show in the USA and had basically no input into its content - the show was made by Alcon Entertainment and Sony Television. Nothing in the show is throw-away just to fill time - you'll figure that out as you watch more of the show - but they might be making decisions about the timing of certain scenes in order to fit the contractually obligated time-limit. I'll be curious if you feel that way in a few episodes.
Remember fans like me and how we wanted you to have patience till Episode 4 - CQB? That was the first little hill in the rollercoaster that is The Expanse. Well, buckle up! Episodes 5,6,7 was going up the high rollercoaster ramp. From the moment Miller saves the crew, the show goes into extreme mode! It is some of the most entertaining television ever and a non-stop rollercoaster (IMHO) until the end of Season 3. WHEE!
Side head cannon: timeline split- everyone but the mormons die. The Expanse is actually a prequel to Battlestar. In a previous episode there’s a poster for the musical the Book of Mormon on the wall in Ceres. Like it’s still running.
Yes. Great reveal. Love your theory. It will become KNOWN...just keep watching (hopefully TWO episodes a week in the NEAR future). BTW, keep making theories. Some/most may not be correct, BUT when you are at the point...you will see your success/failure, but it will also show you the EXPANSE of the vision by the creators and writers. So good. The best Science Fiction show ever made...in my opinion. Great characters, great cast, great writing, great visual effects...the best. I love the two of you thinking out the show and the future episode possibilities. Eros. What is the future for Eros? Very bleak. Be careful for what you wish for. So excited for future reactions. This the best case scenario.
The Mormons are not just bumbling around. They are headed toward a likely habitable system and planet though it is not certain of course. But you haven't seen enough of Earth yet to understand their motivation. The situation Holden's family is in as another outlier is the first of many hints. Amos'... Amosness... is another hint.
Without getting into any spoiler areas, just as a general information (which should be visible in the series already, and was accessible in the book by this point): OPA is not an unified organization with singular governing authority. Just like Belters in general, it's more a haggle of independent groups with the same primary goal ("Freedom/power to the Belt"), led by individuals that can have sometimes significantly different visions of what it specifically means and how to achieve it. For example, of those you have already seen, Fred Johnson's faction is not the same as Anderson Dawes' group, despite both being OPA.
Re: the destruction of the Anubis and the torpedoes the ship uses - some of their torpedoes have nuclear warheads (not all of them). So they probably vaporized the ship.
Great reaction and even cooler theories! Some are pretty good! But The Expanse says if you think this is crazy? Here hold my beer and watch this! Love seeing the storylines converge! Miller and the Rocinante crew meeting was epic! Then they poor Julie!! I have to disagree with your assessment that dialog is just thrown in to fill a scene. We fans have expressed and will continue to do so that there are no wasted lines or scenes in this show! Looking forward to the next one!
Love love love the reactions! All I have to suggest in a non-spoiler way is that episodes 9 and 10 were released together as a season finale, and they really work best as one double-length episode. Your call, but if you can conclude the season in the next episode, you'll love it
Agreed. Even if they don’t post them together, though that would be great, it works best planning to watch them together since they really are basically pt1/pt2 episodes. The same thing happens a few times through the show, not always at season end. Usually people try to point out in advance when upcoming episodes are paired up. Around midway season 2 is another pair of episodes.
Other people have mentioned, I'll say it again: This first book does not end until halfway through season 2, so that's when this first arc will have its true climax, not at the season finale. You guys need even more questions in the show? You'll get them.
Clarus: "I want to float so that my spine decompresses" -- I can relate so bad! Lifelong back issues myself, though recently I've found hanging upside down helps. I'm seriously considering getting an inversion table
Great reaction, I am enjoying your journey so far. Brace for acceleration, and cliffhanger-y episode endings. And excellence, so much excellence is coming!
Oh, the theories. So much fun. Sooo much fun. This show. These stories. These books. Keep you guessing through 9 500-plus page books. I am actually jealous of you guys seeing this for the first time. Can't wait for the next 2 episodes (2-episode finale, kind of).
@Nerdy Nightly, I love that you guys are no so invested in this show. Loving the great reactions so far. Look forward to rewatching the rest of this phenomenal series with you!
I think one important thing to realise with The Expanse is, that none of the big factions are a monolithic block with everyone working for the exact same thing. Earth is governed by the UN but has quite a few people in powerful position that might have varying objectives, similar for Mars. As for the Belt: only part of Belters support the OPA and the OPA itself is made up of a bunch of different factions that aren't lead by a single person. Fred Johnson is the leader of one OPA faction so to say, Anderson Dawes for example is another OPA leader.
The Expanse was originally written to be an RPG. Right now there is a kickstarter for a comic book written to continue the story set between books 6 and 7, and it's raked in millions of dollars. The word is it was to demo another story to build out the franchise, because both Apple and HBO are interesting in continuing it, but not books 7-9.
Fun Fact: “Star Wars Guns” also use ammo. AND “batteries.” That’s what Lando was harvesting at Cloud City, the gases that Imperial Navy Carbine Blasters use the energy in their “batteries “ to turn into highly charged plasma. They run out of gas (and battery) and need to reload.
This show is criminally underrated. Especially here in Europe, sadly. I'm telling everyone who wants to listen about it, but none have decided to watch it yet.
That last 20 seconds……😳💥🙀💥😳 & it’s only gettin crazier from here on out! 😎 Welcome to the Expanse!!! 😂 You’re both making some good guesses… (some closer than others) - the answers to your questions are coming 😁- & they will be instantly replaced by many many more!! 🚀🚀
Another commenter did say this, but I'll reiterate. The next two episodes are a 2-parter of a single story, old Doctor Who Doomsday, Army of Ghosts style. But even more tied together.
Alex does a good job of explaining the order of events this episode when they are on the Anubis. And, then you'll get even more answers next episode. :) But so far, some of your guesses are pretty good. Not quite exactly right, but solid thinking.
This show is gonna go places you both fully see coming and won't ever see coming. At the same time. AND IT'S ONLY SEASON 1! (Seriously I love your cascading freakout over these events)
It doesn't use electricity. It feeds on radiation, which you may have caught when they turned on the Anubis reactor if you weren't texting during that scene. lol 🤷♂
You've got some quite interesting theories :) Definitely looking forward to the next episodes. Shit's absolutely hitting the fan right now and we've finally started getting some answers :)
"If that little Martian ship has torpedoes that strong..." That's just a thermonuclear warhead in space. Without atmo to fight against, the explosion is unbounded. And nothing, at least to my knowledge, survives at the center of a multi-megaton thermonuclear detonation. That's energy that will tear apart atomic cohesion.
Yall are adorable and I loved your reaciton to this episode. This episode is the one that made me fall in love with the show. It only get more mind blowing from here.
I think it's really interesting how much you notice/pay attention to/discuss the early reveal of who sent the assassins, as compared to the slow mystery of everything else in the show. But I guess not everything needs to be setup for a huge reveal. Also, I can't wait for you to watch the next episode. If you can't wait either... maybe don't wait? :)
Different characters finding out the same information, yes. ...but how does each character _respond_ to the same information? What do they _do differently_ from the others? In the giant Venn diagram of any complex sociological system, the most interesting things aren't the individual factions or even the sub-factions. The most interesting things are the overlaps. The universe of THE EXPANSE is filled with factions. You've only just begun to see them. "You vow loyalty but you will not fly your King's banner. How are we to judge you?" "A banner is both the marker of a vassal's loyalty and the shroud of a traitor's malice. I've no use for banners, nor any for your judgment."
The death of Avarsarela's friend which is being ruled as suicide is actually a VERY important plot point and will have consequences down the line. Actually, we don't know who the tac-team is, we are simply assuming that they are Earthers (actually they are locals who have been contracted by Errinwright.)
Reminder ( I think I mentioned this before), this show is a Master Class in the cliffhanger. It is so amusing seeing reactor's reactions to those cliffhangers.
the control he used to move the ship is "3d" mouse its real thing it has X,Y and Z axis on one control. there used a lot with 3d modeling software or CAD. i also know people that use them for Space sims like Elite and Star Citizen
It does not matter how much "new-age tech" the Anubis has, it was just ground zero for a tactical nuclear warhead. All that is left of that ship (and the asteroid it was anchored to) is expanding gas and high-energy particles.
Nerdy: "The mormons have to have some purpose in this show..." Mansplainer 2099: "FUNCTION. FUNCTION in this show. "Purpose" is a myth, it's always been a myth. I want to bash my head into my desk every time I see people making this mistake."
Here...we...go! Keep the theories coming, we love watching reactors build elaborate whiteboard conspiracy maps only for the book authors to come through and smash them to bits every fourth episode 😂
Good job with your explanation of Julie’s mission, just one correction: It wasn’t Fred Johnson that sent Julie on the Scopuli to investigate the Anubis, it was Anderson Dawes. This show is so damn good… so not to spoil anything, just saying… this virus thing, just when you think you know what it is, you don’t. That’s the whole fun of The Expanse.
I pivotal episode and masterfully done. The suspense horror on the Anubis gives me alien vibes, the buildup to the lobby shooting, Miller and Roci crew meeting up and the dreadful revelation of Julie's fate. But you ain't seen nothing yet.
That team wasn;t really a "tac team" as much as a bunch of mercs that worked with Kenzo. A military tac-team would have been way more thorough and prepped I think. Not a Sanderson story but still funny. Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham wrote it (James SA Corey being they pen name.) Ty Franck and Wes Chatman (Amos actor) have a fun podcast called Ty and That Guy. Can be spoilery but it started out as them breaking down each episode and now they just hang out. Shoreh Agdagshdaloo is my favorite.
Miller and the Roci crew converging was such a huge moment for me and then BAM… Julie. Such a great episode!

WHEE!
....and we're just getting started.
Yup, and then you go back to the roller coaster in season 4 until the finale and then wheeeeeeeeee
Then there’s lurching and vomiting and Wheee!!! Through S5-6.
And then books 7 to 9 and that beautiful epilogue 🍻
"Eros is gone" lol
"This is the worst case scenario" ooooh, you have NOOOO IDEA!!! 😲😲😲
This entire series is just fantastic
"But if it's on Eros Station, how long does Eros have?" 😬
By season 2, I bet you guys won't be able to resist doing twice a week releases. =)
Let’s hope!
Remember that the original Battlestar was Mormon legend informed.
13th Colony in a far away land....
Messengers of Light...
Yeah...
This show goes bigger and bigger from here. Best science fiction show ever. Your jaws will be on the floor so many times...
"it can grow through the vents..." 😬 oh our sweet innocent duo 😉
I like the confidence Nerdy has in his convoluted idea of what has happened.. keep watching buddy, it's bigger than you imagine.
AND “batteries.”
That’s what Lando was harvesting at Cloud City, the gases that Imperial Navy Carbine Blasters use the energy in their “batteries “ to turn into highly charged plasma.
They run out of gas (and battery) and need to reload.
That's not ammo though, a raygun is more like a flashlight and a Star Wars blaster is more like a flamethrower with a battery-powered sparkplug.
I love the theories. I feel fat with knowledge of the truth. Can't wait for you two to see it all.
I've been wearing a "Beratnas Gas" cap since 2016. So far nobody has ever recognized that logo or name.
This show is criminally underrated. Especially here in Europe, sadly. I'm telling everyone who wants to listen about it, but none have decided to watch it yet.
it's actually a "spacemouse" used for controlling 3D design software, I have one on my desk, so seeing it in the expanse makes me laugh every time
That last 20 seconds……😳💥🙀💥😳
& it’s only gettin crazier from here on out! 😎
Welcome to the Expanse!!! 😂
You’re both making some good guesses… (some closer than others) - the answers to your questions are coming 😁- & they will be instantly replaced by many many more!! 🚀🚀
Oooo we're seeing things finally start to heat up!!!!! 👏 can't wait for what's coming around the bend....
"It's SO bad."
Wait for it...
Another commenter did say this, but I'll reiterate. The next two episodes are a 2-parter of a single story, old Doctor Who Doomsday, Army of Ghosts style. But even more tied together.
The. Best. Reaction to the Julie reveal ever hahaha, this is where sh*t gets real, it's gonna be a bumpeh ride!
Alex does a good job of explaining the order of events this episode when they are on the Anubis. And, then you'll get even more answers next episode. :) But so far, some of your guesses are pretty good. Not quite exactly right, but solid thinking.
Man, I am so happy that we are right about suggesting this show to you
This show is gonna go places you both fully see coming and won't ever see coming. At the same time.
AND IT'S ONLY SEASON 1! (Seriously I love your cascading freakout over these events)
I love this scence cause, you know it's space and NO ONE is stupid in this scene. Regardless of feelings.
"If that little Martian ship has torpedoes that strong..."
That's just a thermonuclear warhead in space. Without atmo to fight against, the explosion is unbounded.
And nothing, at least to my knowledge, survives at the center of a multi-megaton thermonuclear detonation. That's energy that will tear apart atomic cohesion.
Your reactions make me so happy;-) You have no idea how much joy your enthusiasm gives us. Stay cool, stay fun! Wishing you a great week!
Love this show, love your reaction. Makes one want the next one tomorrow!
there's so many more things to come I'm so excited!!!
Remember what Dr. Dresden said:
"We can only learn by letting IT learn."
Yeah, long scenes with you checking your phone! :) But you were on top of it all! Great reaction.... Can't wait till you see how it plays out.
I always forget this is the episode where the authors made a cameo.
Yall are adorable and I loved your reaciton to this episode. This episode is the one that made me fall in love with the show. It only get more mind blowing from here.
"Not zombie-zombie, obviously, cause they're not gonna, like, shamble at each other"
LOL, book reader here. :)
The next couple episodes are going to blow your minds haha can't wait for the reactions!!
I’ve started my (probable) 17th rewatch just to enjoy S1 and your reactions. I’m on catch up. About to start CQB. Again….. again
The Mormon Syfy tv show has already been done. It was the original Battlestar Galactica made back in the 1970’s.
"Where tf do we go from here"
HAHA....YES.
"It's the worst case scenario. And it's Season 1! Where do we go from here!?"
You have no idea :-)
How are we to judge you?"
"A banner is both the marker of a vassal's loyalty and the shroud of a traitor's malice.
I'm so on board for this journey. Put my name on the plaque on the Rocci
This was the episode when for me this show went from good tv sci fi to epic and it only gets better.
Nerdy: "The mormons have to have some purpose in this show..."
Mansplainer 2099: "FUNCTION.
You have no f***ing idea where we go from here, but it is hell of a ride and you are going to love it!
Are you guys sure you can only watch this once a week? 😉
Fred did supply the ship to Dawes, but he didn’t know the mission or the crew (just the code name “Lionel Polanski”).
there are very few throw away lines in this series especially early on, you'll see frank's death is relevent
BTW don't know what wiki said, Pheobe is a moon of MARS, red said Saturn.
