CARRY ME BACK TO OLD VIRGINIA

- “De Floating Scow of Old Virginia” was composed by Charles White of “White’s Serenaders,” a minstrel band that performed primarily in New York City. The song was published in 1847 by Lee & Walker of Philadelphia, PA. and became a national hit.
After the Battle of Sharpsburg, MD (Antietam) General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia started to return across the Potomac River to Virginia. As some of their ambulances entered the river, they came under Federal artillery fire. The teamsters panicked, cut their horses loose and escaped across the river, leaving their ambulance wagons in the river with the wounded still inside. Acting Brigadier General Colonel James Lane and his North Carolinians were members of Lee’s rear guard. When they came upon the stranded ambulances, Col. Lane spurred his soldiers into action. As some of the men dragged, pushed and pulled the ambulances to the safety of Virginia, others urged them on by singing “De Floating Scow of Old Virginia.” Their swift and decisive action saved the wounded and prevented them from becoming prisoners of war. They were carried back to safety of “Old Virginia’s Shore.”

I've never been to Virginia, in fact I haven't been to America at all.....BUT.....my excuse is I'm a Brit living in the UK so it's a bit far to go to watch the band so thank goodness for You Tube! Thumbs up from me.
Nothing better than some good twin uploads for good twin birthdays
I never thought I’d see the day when this song would be published in music video format by you all. Each new video is a treasure, and a gift to future generations.
So outstanding to see more quality videos from you, pards. This is the very tune I have been working on from Brigg’s Banjo Instructor! Of course - you are my auditory reference. Once again, wonderful shots and sound. God bless and hope to see more soon!

Never forget that General lee remarked...."the boys from Carolina stood like they had tar on their heels".
Could someone explain me what flag is hoisted in behind? Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
its the flag of the confederate states of America, many people confuse the flag with the blue cross for this
@@karisplaneet1270 Thank you brother or sister, I was interested and a bit confused because of it‘s obvious similarities with Austria‘s flag!

Why not the original lyrics........original melody? Is this NOT, "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny?"
