It’s common for martial artists to see the ground and pound as the “easier” part of mixed martial arts. It seems simple: once the opponent is on the ground on his or her back, hitting them should be a relatively straightforward process.
However, getting on top of an opponent and flailing away is a surefire way for a fighter to tire and lose the ability to protect him or herself.
Mixed martial arts is arguably defined by ground and pound: in boxing and kickboxing, the fight stops when an opponent falls to the ground, and in wrestling or Brazilian jiu jitsu, no striking is allowed. There’s no doubt that ground and pound can be one of the most brutal aspects of MMA, but the brutality of it does not mean that it does not require technique and understanding to execute well.
Understanding ground and pound techniques requires an understanding of striking arts as well as grappling. Engaging in a successful ground and pound campaign requires that the fighter understand balance, leverage, and distance management; however, the athlete has to understand these fundamentals from a grappling and a striking perspective.
Positional Control for Ground and Pound
Top positions are the traditional positions from which to engage in ground and pound. Mount, side control, half guard, and even closed guard are all effective positions from which to strike an opponent. The better the positional control, the more effective ground and pound techniques will be. In addition, it’s essential to remember that a fighter should never give up position in an effort to strike the opponent. Controlling the distance and maintaining balance can be difficult if a fighter isn’t careful, particularly in positions like closed guard and half guard.
    Using Ground and Pound Effectively
There are a number of fighters who have developed the ability to use ground and pound highly effectively, and they share a number of features: first, they establish positional control before they begin striking. It doesn’t matter what position they are striking from- they always develop strong positional control before changing position to strike.
Fighters who use ground and pound effectively also tend to use a good mixture of elbows and fist strikes to incapacitate their opponent. The combination of pressure, positional dominance, and blows to the head and body is often enough to overwhelm even an experienced martial artist.
Why You Should Practice Your Ground and Pound
Ground and pound is unlike any other part of MMA, and it needs to be practiced specifically. In this set of tutorials, I specifically look at ways to improve the ground and pound part of your MMA game. I look closely at closed guard, which can be a complex position to utilise in MMA, particularly for grapplers, who are used to having the closed guard be a dominant position for the bottom player. The purpose of this series is to expand the fighter’s perspectives on the use of ground and pound in an MMA fight; the first series in the Mittmaster Ground & Pound Video specifically covers strikes and traps from the closed guard.

You are very welcome. I really love your videos and other materials. You inspired me to get some pads and I really love holding them and coaching others. I've received great feedback from people I've trained with. I plan on opening my own karate dojo within the next couple of months and I plan on subscribing to your monthly program. I am also interested in your certification program in the future. Keep up the fantastic work! P.s. I just saw your video for kids drills. That kid in the video was phenomenal!!!
