It depends really, if you're able to see outside of being just an island metric and have a global work perspective - it definitely opens up possibilities. Singapore is safe, intelligent, and as you can see from expat communities - diverse, but will lack a certain level of mental growth and intellectual agency if you play within the systems of tradition for too long. The mentally happiest people in the world are people who can execute a level of personal agency. For some, it is optical - for example; being seen as a majority in a country absolutely opens way more doors financially. For others, it is personal - meaning they have parts of their identity that cannot conform to a specific homogeny Singapore demands - then these people are absolutely alright in playing a minority role in the West for a sliver of tangential freedom. The most important thing is to think critically about your personal situation and decide for yourself what makes absolute sense!
If they become Westernized enough. A good example is Lynn Ban in LA, who just passed away last month. She looked practically like an American-born Chinese. In the West, Asians have to keep their heads down and not challenge the white supremacy in order to survive. They would be more themselves in Asia, naturally.
Anyone can be happy in any location, it depends on how you integrate and adapt. I have lived in the UK, Italy, Philippines, Singapore. Reversing it and depending on your visa situation, someone moving from the UK to live in Singapore can live happily but not sustainably (unless via ep/job transfer). In my case for example. My wife is a PR - they gave me what I thought was a great visa, 3 years ltvp+ and a letter of consent to work. I sold everything and moved. I really enjoyed SG for a good 10months. However there was a problem, no one hires people on this visa even though theoretically they should. Locals only apparently. It's not possible for me to stay with my wife (I have a career to maintain and want to contribute financially) what if we wanted to start a family? If no one hires how can I support them? I am now back in the UK working contracts and visiting when I can. Is the government even aware that the visa isn't working as intended and doesn't serve its purpose? We married in SG and were hoping to start our family there, I hope to return one day so we can live together. If not our only option is to both come back to the UK.
One of the best guest in your channel. I'm actually in a middle of a (failure) now. But after watching this, Im comforted that this is just gonna be one of the many mandatory setbacks in life where if you don't go through it, you will never taste success!
still watching, this one's really captivating and motivating. gonna bookmark it, don't know how but def will bookmark it, keep it for moments when I need a mental refresh or reset
Hian's words are full of wisdom. I can't help but continue to watch and finish this video. Max, thanks for doing this interview. Giving back and be generous is his concluding remark say a lot about how much this guy has gone through life himself and be in a very happy state now. I wish him well.
This was one of the coolest contents of your channel. The guy has several experiences and to be honest your Asian guests are very interesting. They open up more and their insights are much practical with deeper views and understanding of our world not just Singapore. Well done.
Such an intelligent speaker ! Learnt much from your comprehensive overview of Singapore. Luv when you break out in the Singaporean mode, lol!!! Spot on! Max, appreciate that you always listens actively and ask relevant questions in a timely manner that prod guests to share their deep thoughts & opinions. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
A highly interesting video, Hian Goh is such an exuberant personality ! So many valuable insights, great perspectives and how setbacks helped in his journey.
Great interview and perspective from Hian ! Based on my past experience, I totally agree, as Singaporean, we need to take more risks and be less risk averse.
Singapore is one of the most efficient place when it comes to clean energy and waste mangement. One of the thing I learned from my clean energy course is that Singapore has a very efficient system of recycling water that do not exist in many places in the West and the US.
I have friends who have emigrated to NZ for years and doing well. I guess its where you are that the adoptive country make you feel at home. Apart from the humid weather, as a Singaporean, I am happy here.
Hian mentioned luck a few times. Luck doesn’t just fall into your laps. You have to create your own luck. Luck happens when Preparedness meets Opportunity.
Generally they are disciplined and therefore law is followed. 3rd world is complete opposite, money talks and who you know pushes you up the ladder and therefore the creativeness is suppressed or lost due to migration.
35:27 Mr Sim Wong Hoo. May his soul rest in peace. CEO and founder of Creative Technologies, a leader, entrepreneur with vision, courage, who didn’t give up.
Asian man is always a foreigner in the ancestral genetic homeland of white Caucasian English.... yea wow interesting, also did you know water is wet and grass grows in the dirt?
Runibg, a small country like Singapore, is different from investment. Risk diversity. I can't agree with it .when you said change society meaning business prosperity..you can't change the fundamentals of Singapore structure..which for past 50 years is proven working well and stable.
I've lived in UK and have family in UK... For us Singaporeans, UK is liveable and more or less affordable as the standard and cost of living is pretty much the same as Singapore.
I suspect you either speak as an individual drawing income in Singapore or are very wealthy. Most people i know says living standards there are very high and almost half of their income goes to taxes. As for people that choose to remain in UK, they mainly say its because of the slower pace of life.
From my experience living, studying and working in London, public transport is definitely far more expensive, taxes are crazy high and there are essentially no cheap options for dining out. If you have a smart kid, he or she has a chance to get into top schools in sg but in the uk, there is an overwhelming advantage for students from elite boarding schools which cost a ton.
Singapore is too small to take risks. This people's talk like just play with fire is ok . Look at Indonesia fire yearly, but Jakarta is ok . But if Singapore is on fire, that's very dangerous.
Most important is our Singaporean living well ...peace stability. What nagative comments its means nothing . No perfect policy. No perfect person . Singapore is too small to have so much noise. ... negative noise . What everyone says doesn't mean it's correct .at time, the government spends resources and time wasted on such issues.
On the topic of free speech, it's alright to have crazy ideas but not alright to have lies and deceptions being propagated by the immoral ones. For example, there are those that have been charged for lying under oath, or getting pofmaed for spreading falsehoods.
Can Singaporeans live happily in the West, or is it just an illusion?

Naaaah, the food is better in the east 😂😅😊

Happiness is where your family and social network is.

Till our founder past on .his vision and execution of policy is correct .
Singapore is successful because first of all, they are disciplined. The law is the law.
Generally they are disciplined and therefore law is followed. 3rd world is complete opposite, money talks and who you know pushes you up the ladder and therefore the creativeness is suppressed or lost due to migration.

Excellent piece of work, once again someone says health is more valuable than wealth.

Horrible weather most of the year round - cold, wet, cloudy, windy; high taxation (S'pore has no inheritance tax as an example); horrible food.
OK stay there. Don’t dont come back. We don’t need you anyway
