Richard Raffan asymetric grind _ how I sharpen it....
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 сер 2023
- Over the years I have developed my method of sharpening asymetric grind from Richard Raffan.... Mostly due poor platforms and grinders I have hold a gouge in my hand and then manipulated the shape...that way I reduce a lot of vibrations from the platform and grinder...
Now after owning oneway platform and nice grinder from Record power I still use same tehnique as its now more of the muscle memorie....
Hope you'll enjoy

Thank you very much for watching 🤗 - Наука та технологія
Tomislav. You are very respectful towards Richard attributing many techniques you use to him. This is a sign of a good man
Your technique is steady and produces wonderful edge as is seen in your turnings. I'm definitely a fan of you and Richard Raffan
Thank you very much, I turner I'm today beacuse of Richard.... He help me out a lot and I want to give back to turning comunity
Thanks a lot, will keep practicing free hand, the detailed and upclose video is really helpful but as in any thing...the practice makes the master. Really appreciate again the commitment to the ones like me who are in the process of learning. So, let's go back to work then! Enjoy your Sunday!
Thank you Boris, indeed, as with anything its practice and repetetive work to master the movement and muscle memorie..... thank you for watching and comment 😀
When I first started turning. I wanted a posh shop bought grinding jig. I didn't have the money so I free handed it and I am glad I did. Not only do I grind and sharpen as Tomislav (I will take it as validation ) but its a lot faster and more versatile. Thanks for the video Tomislav!
Agreed sir 😉 and I might add that freehand sharpening help to develope a feel/light touch which is extremely usefull on the lathe
Appreciate seeing how you do this. I've really got to start practicing free-hand sharpening to get better at it. I have a 1/2" spindle gouge that is now too short to fit in the sharpening jig, this seems a good opportunity to practice.
That is excellent opportunity sir, and one big plus for sharpening free☺️hand
Thanks for the demo! Now I see how you grind it.I'll give it a try.
Go for it.... thank you 😉
Thanks for this lesson Tomislav. I haven't been able to put that grind on my bowl gouge the way I really wanted it. I'm gonna give this a try and I'm sure now that I can get it like I want it!
Take care, Dave
Glad to hear that Dave....take your time and good luck sir
Good explanation for the wing shaping thanks for showing us .
Glad to be able to help out ☺️
Great lesson Tomislav.
Thank you ☺️
Fantastic teaching aid. Thanks again for your easy-to-understand instructions.
An extra question. What kind of woodworking does your father in law do? We can hear him cutting and I'm interested in his work too. Thanks
Thank you sir 😀 father in law makes baskets for flowers and lamps for flowerist and for cemeteries but other events as well.... Its an old tablesaw , far from safe thing, but its enough for his needs as those baskets are rough work....
Thanks for the video Tomislav! Chip chip 😊
Thank you Chip chip 😅
Such an incredible skill.
Thank you😉
I will give this another go and use my hand to hold gouge. Cheers
Try it.... Hope it helpes and thank you for watching
Thank you for watching and comment, short answer is that its personal preference but also it can be connected to specific task.... A 60 degrees can blend side to bottom of the bowl easier vs. 45degress.... 45 will give generally better cut ..... 60 degree can for example induce more vibration when hollowing beacuse it will put more pressure on the side of the bowl..... I'll do probably a video on this....😀
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Да, ты прав, когда чаша имеет толщину 5-6 миллиметров вибрация бывает часто. Спасибо за ответ, очень информативно. Удачи тебе.
Thank you for the great tips and tricks. Still using a jig but trying to get away from it.
Thank you 😉
About the asymmetric grind: On a traditional Irish or Ellsworth grind, the left-wing works great to do sheer scraping when you have the flute almost closed and the tool itself held more vertically. When you do an asymmetric grind, it is hard to keep the flute closed as much as the Ellsworth grind because the right wing is about 40 deg and prevents the flute from closing enough. Do you find that a problem?
That is a great question, I ussually shear scraped with scraper, but on some woods that dont like to be scraped I use bowl gouge.... Its just enough closed position to shear scrape.... I do have one gouge with long wing for extremely stuburn woods .... In my mind its best for turner to know all the tacticts to attack woods that dont like to cooperate..... I'll try to show in few of the next videos how I shear scrape with gouge
❤ IT
☺️
Hi Tomislav. When the bowl gouge can't be used as a bowl gouge, what tool would you make it into?
Hello😉
Well one could be a point tool, and second a smaller round skew....I have several bowl gouges that are without a flute so I might do a video😉
