  • In this Episode 1, KOWM team asks Yaguchi Sensei what his secret is to make his techniques effective beyond his physique. Yaguchi Sensei explains how he applies “body vibration” to his techniques, which was originally suggested to him by his instructor, Master Masatoshi Nakayama.
    About Master Yutaka Yaguchi:
A Karate-Ka who started training Shotokan at Nihon University Karate Club, who was awarded his Shodan by Gichin Funkakoshi, the founder of the Shotokan Karate.
He trained directly under Masatoshi Nakayama, who is known as the "father of the modern Karate" and the first Chief Instructor of the JKA. He was one of the very first JKA HQ instructors, and he created a legend by training and competing among the founders of today's Shotokan Karate: Tetsuhiko Asai (JKS), Keinosuke Enoeda(KUGB/JKA England), Hirokazu Kanazawa (SKIF), Teruyuki Okazaki (ISKF), and etc...
Kuroobi-World Media team has been given an incredible opportunity to visit Yaguchi Sensei at his home Dojo in Colorado. Witness Master Yaguchi's utterly mind-blowing techniques, philosophy, and discipline. KOWM team experiences the Ippon-Kumite that Tatsuya Naka was blown away by. Welcome to the world of Budo Karate by Master Yaguchi that's built on 70 years of experience.

It's wonderful to interview a retired Master, such as Yaguchi Sensei, and explore the deeper aspects of Budo. He seems so open to discuss these lesser known ideas behind karate-do, which is so fortunate.

Its a delight to catch a glimpse of Yaguchi Shihan again after a long gap ..one of the 1st generation Shotokan legends - going strong at 90 years . Was lucky to train under him in the ISKF Masters Camp. His book " Body and mind like bullet " truly stands out . His waza is strong with an " internal" power , blinding speed .. Shihan has been equally adept both in kumite and kata - plus a motivational Karate teacher and a wonderful human being - always learning , innovative and humble. Oss Shihan - love , regards and respects - from India

    ... maximise the damage?
Sensei Kase taught us to maximise control. Karate is a humane sport, were his words.

What do they mean when speaking of Yo vs In techniques. Something new to me.

It's similar to Yin and Yang, positive and negative, dark and light, soft vs strong. BALANCE :)
      Amazing videos.

As the other replier said, it is the idea of Yin Yang, duality etc. but I think we can take the explanation further: in this specific case I understand that “In” is being used to talk about “inner” power (usually generated by subtle movements of your hips/body’s core, which is usually achieved by tensing abdomen and glutes with correct timing, therefore harder to see from the outside) while Yo is referring to “outer” power (usually achieved by larger movements of your arms and legs, powered by your legs and arms muscles, and therefore, more visible)
When we strike with “Yo” it feels like you expand your arms and then contract them on impact
When we strike with “In” it feels like your spin your whole body, the arms are lunged forward as a consequence, and then we contract just the center/core on impact (arms continue moving with the flow, vibrating, similar to a driver flying through the windbreaker when a car crashes)
