The Survival Russia Channel is about "The Reality Of Survival". I live on a Homestead in far away Russian wild nature. Here is no room for "TV" Survival.
Only Reality counts here. Survival Russia promotes the philosophy of always carrying equipment and never to be parted from equipment which will affect chances of Survival.
So did the old timers and pioneers of both the East and the West.

After the mix had cooled off I added a bit more oil and Pine tar, as the mix was a little bit too stiff, which makes it hard to apply.
Scho-ka-kola I have a about 200 cans of it lol
Distilled pine tar is turpentine. I buy a liter for cca $10 ,-
This one looks dark though which may be caused by dry distillation instead of by steam. My product is clear as water, like an essential oil. It also doesnt last long and quickly evaporates. There's a vid of a girl making a birch oil in a pot in a fire and it was indeed black. What I dont understand is how it's not sticky? Pine tar is a known survival glue.
What's going on here? Find it out and you can make your own. There's enough trees in your location so why would you buy it from Sweden? It doesnt make sense if you can make gallons of the same stuff
Connie and I will chuckle to ourselves when we are out with someone and they say something like "the bugs are really bad here". Connie and I will look around and maybe we might see one mosquito in 5-10 minutes. "bad" is relative. Many people will really think the bugs are bad when we do not even notice them. When a person is around great concentrations of mosquitoes for a while, you somewhat get used to them after a while and just learn to deal with it, just like you said.
We do not have pines here in South Central Alaska so i can not make my own pine tar but I have made spruce "tar". I have not tried it as a repellent yet though. I have used Birch bark oil as a repellent which is supposedly a traditional repellent in Siberia. It did not work here in Alaska as a repellent. Granted the Siberians mixed their BB oil with fish oil. I did not do that. I used the BB oil straight. I'd like to try your recipe sometime but perhaps substitute the pine tar with spruce tar and see how well that works. Thanks for the info.
Indeed "bad" is relative. Funny to imagine you and Connie chuckle at peoples comments :)
You are correct. BB tar is/was used widely a bug repellent. Also for wild stock. It's interesting that you mention it did not work for your area. Not long ago I was thinking that bugs are maybe not just bugs, no matter where you are. That they might have different preferences so to speak. It would be interesting to see if you can get Spruce tar to work for you. When using beeswax, it is important that the finale product is soft enough to kid of "melt" when you touch it with a finger. If not - add more tar and oil.
Thank you for the post friend.
Long time ago, my friend bought some non-poisonous repellent stuff meant for horses for his dog. We bought some poisonous and expensive stuff for ourselves. Horseflies considered the human stuff as delicacy and they were biting like hell while we had the non-working poisonous stuff on ourselves. The bugs didn't bother the dog. We washed away the poisonous stuff and applied the same stuff as the dog had; no smell, wasn't sticky and worked really well. Was very cheap in comparison too.
I can't remember the brand, could have been "Effol", as that seems to be ok for dogs who tend to lick themselves, but I am not sure. It was sold in one litre pump spray bottles.
Pine Tar is a well-respected product in the United States, still used as a major ingredient in organic soaps as well as in traditional bug repellent recipes. We even have a shampoo for hair cleansing made with pine tar as a key ingredient. Our traditional Outdoor writers from the early years of the 20th Century (and the last 25 years of the 19th Century) included recipes in their books and magazine articles. One idea was to 'build up a glaze' through applying repeated layers over the course of an extended camp. The pine tar and beeswax helped out there! Oil of a plant called 'Pennyroyal' was included on the theory that its chemistry repelled bugs. Well: you wisely point out that a non-allergic person can just get bitten up a bit in the short run. Other persons had best take steps involving meaningful concentrations of DEET. Thanks for a great video episode on a topic of intense and enduring interest!
Watching this video I recalled a trick I learned. If you are caught without repellent grab some pine needles and rub them vigorously against your skin to repel mosquitoes.
Thanks for sharing your recipe Lars. Beck Olja works well and stays on the skin reasonably long time, sweat permitting :) The only issue I have had with it has been in hot sun where it burns my face, of course, if I stay in the shade of trees it is OK. It smells strong, but I don't mind it too much. Pine Tar was frequently used on leather soled boots to keep water out. Local native people use a plant called Achillea, you can rub it on the skin, but I imagine they may have boiled it down and made a wash from it. Pyrethrum is reputed to be quite effective at repelling bugs. Don't eat Bananas, that makes human blood more attractive to the 'Mozzies' (my son can attest to that as he eats lots of Bananas and gets eaten alive when he visits me in the Bush).
And here I am! Thanks again, bud! I bought one of those net suits and can attest that it's like a biodome that's too small and has not much more in it but you and your body heat.
Great memory to recall, about your grandfather.
Yes :)
Interesting mix. Surely healthier to apply than Deet or other laboratory devised, factory made repellants. Even though the tar gives your repellant an instant tan-effect, this mixture is actually good for the skin. More than can be said for permethrin etc. I try to minimize my use of repellants as well, just going by the idea "if I absolutely don't need it, I won't use it." My father is similar in his thought when it comes to "just getting used to them." Easier said than done, but probably the most effective way of dealing with the buggers. Thanks for the video Lars, have a great week!
Lars! down here in Victoria Australia its the middle of winter and I was camping up on mount Baw Baw, usually there are not many large logs here and taking wood(even dead wood) from a standing tree is illegal as our trees can grow back from being completely burnt. anyway on this particular occasion someone had left some long large logs and my brother and I made a Siberian log fire! it was awesome and kept us warm all night with minimal effort. it was even snowing a little bit! thanks so much for showing me how!
Lars, try spraying bug spray on the brim of your hat brim, instead or your skin. I have also been told "Bounce brand" fabric dryer sheets repel mosquitos. I've never tried them, but it is supposed to work. Just tie a sheet or two to your belt loops on your pants. Worth a try!
Worth a try buddy. Worth a try :)
It's effective rub on skin and clothing also after rubbing on your skin put them in your pockets then reuse them at home when you do your laundry after that save them to wipe after nature calls you to squat might as well get the most uses out of them.
Awesome video Lars!
I'm going to give it a try.
One of the things I use for natural bug spray is essential oils.
I combine peppermint oil, lavender oil and tea tree oil with water in a pump spray bottle. It works pretty darn good.
Great video as always Lars!
I think remember you making some sort of bug repellent from birch tar.
I know old timers used pine tar on EVERYTHING, so that may be why your grandfather's attic smelled of the stuff.
Oils are great multitools!
Cool recipe, thanks for showing Lars.
Great to see the funky soviet russian cooker again!
Atb to you and your family,
GR🤘
Getting closer to the one hundred K viewers! Good to see that; since you surely deserves it!
Excellent chemistry. Pine & Coal Tar are very beneficial for the skin. Pine tar soap is very good for numerous skin diseases. The Wilmas Beck Olja Oil has been used for generations for many purposes.
Fred Thorne Coal Tar is Asphalt sealant. ☺ Pick a big drum of it at your local hardware store. Spilled that on my pants once... Wife wasn't too happy about the smell.
Brian Reddeman - Know it sounds bizarre but coal tar soap was for years a reasonably effective treatment for plaque psoriasis.
Asphalt is made from broken stone mixed with tar; coal tar, as the name suggests, comes from coal. Asphalt, on the other hand, is prepared from crude oil. The soft sticky nature of taris used to hold roofing tiles in their place. With the mixture of rocks and small stones, asphalt is used to build city roads.
Another seemingly weird concoction was "Brown soap."
Branded as Fell's Naptha, the soap was derived from crude oil production and was molecularly close to gasoline. Years ago it was used for bathing, laundry, dishes and other household uses. It was also used to treat poison ivy.
Fred Thorne Actually coal Tar is used to seal asphalt. Weird that it has other uses like as you described. Thank you for sharing that. :)
Brian Reddeman - Thanks Brian, I don't want to think I was being an @-hole with my response. I know nothing about road construction or other highway engineering stuff. I guess the stuff is pretty versatile. It does make you smell like a telephone pole, maybe that's creosote...I don't know. Thanks buddy. 👍✌
Fred Thorne You weren't. A written discussion is always the hardest to convey intent. 99% I don't chime in because you, Lars and a lot of others here have been doing this all their lives. Lots to learn. :)
I haven't found a recipe yet that doesn't offend the senses. Deet makes you smell like a chemistry lab. Pine tar makes you smell like an old pine tree. There was a zinc citronella one somewhere I tried that well I couldn't smell anything because I'm allergic to it. :)
I recently replicated an insect repellant “ bug dope “ recipe from a famous American outdoorsman from the early 1900’s named George Washington Sears ( his pen name was Nessmuk). Three parts pine tar, two parts castor oil and one part pennyroyal oil. Simmer briefly and bottle. He claimed that 2 ounces would last a season.
Beckolje - the authentic smell of grandads in scandinavia! :)
Indeed :)
God Bless you Lars ! If more people just got over it ! Life would be more Awesome! Have a great day my freind !
Maybe a tick and tick removal video someday? :)
Two thirds of video about what is gonna happened in video...love from Serbia!
Thank you so much for the recipe. I will definitely look into making some.
Great option for all those baseball-sized biting flies. My joy - bats and swallows. Humans, bats, and the swallow bird species go hand in hand.
Night-time flying critters. Large bat mansions. Keep all children and pets away from the mansion (bat feces and other disease vectors). Allow the bats to come out and take down all flying bugs.
Day-time flying critters. Huge purple martin mansion community and overhead wire perching sytem (biggest swallows), ... and a multiple number of telephone pole cross bars with swallow boxes (or gourds) for barn swallows, tree swallows, cliff swallows. Even putting up nesting shelves in the soffit areas of the garage and barns, enticing the barn swallows to make their mud nests. The more the swallows, the less skeeters and biting flies, the more happy the humans and swallows.
Sending some citronella oil (American skeeter candle oil), that can be used with pine/birch oil-tar, beeswax, olive oil, ... and if you have some lanolin (sheep wool oil, high in Vit D) will make a nice anti-bug ointment/lotion. Even some Avon Skin-So-Soft (having some advertised anti-skeeter ingredient properties). And Bag Balm (anti-biotic and anti-bug).
Great creatures. Also spiders! :)
Excellent video my friend, once again, educating us from different parts of the world, of your tricks of the trade, and always great to hear memories, my friend....
This is Lars at his best!😉
Excellent, most useful!!
My Ovtcharka has thick fur so hard to keep ticks away. Perhaps the pine will help.
I think your method has to be much better for you than using too much deet. I always prefer a natural method of anything, thanks for sharing my friend.
Great video Lars! Do people in your area think that birch tar, or pine tar, or tar from a specific species of birch or pine work better than the others for bug repellent?
I build wooden boats for a living, and it's funny how your bug repellent recipe is almost exactly the same as an ancient recipe called "boat sauce" or "boat soap" depending on which language it's in. It is an ancient preservative for wooden boats, and it works great! You warm it up a little if it's cold out, brush it on with a rag, or brush, it seems sticky mess at first, but the. You keep rubbing it with a dry rag, and the wax/oil comes to the surface, and it just feels like a nice waxed finish.
No, but Pine tar is best. Birch tar is mostly used for protecting live stock.
You are right. Simply applying the mind to getting used to discomfort is the better option. ☆ flies, for example. There is always the head net to go over the hat, but that might be uncomfortable, too. Some people are simply children, without the ability to adjust ☆
Another great Sunday video Lars. Awesome once again. Have a great week.
Add a drop of lemon grass oil or geraniol to your mix. Especially mosquitoes hate that smell. (It's the active ingredient in most "organic" bug repellents.)
Love it, a Great recipe and simple to make .
Very interesting. Question: do you have cedar or juniper trees out there? If so, then you can boil in water that covers by about an inch the cedar leaves that are pulled from the trees while gree. Cook at a low boil for about an hour or so and then strain out the leaves and squeeze out what is left in the leaves. Then cook it down some more to reduce it to 1/4th of the original volume. Once it is cooled it can be poured into a small spray bottle and spritz all over and on your pets too to ward off all sorts of insects, especially the biting kind. So, you walk around smelling like a cedar blanket chest. Worse things to smell like than that!
Yeah, mosquitoes here can carry dengue in the tropics. But living here, we got used to that risk and don't protect ourselves against bites all the time. Although in the cities, the risk is smaller. It's mostly in the wild that the risk is higher.
This is just really awesome substance. I never heard of Beckolja before, but in eastern Europe and in Russia especially I think something called Vishnevski balsam is used.
It is also a mixture of oil (ricine/sunflower) with either pine tar or birch tar, and it is an amazing medicament. It was used to treat gunshot wounds during WW2 in russian army and I dont know better treatment for all kinds of infected wounds, as well as other dermatologic problems like acne. I have got rid of foot mycosis using Vishnevski balsam, where nohing else was helping.
Tar is strongly antiseptic substance able to kill all kinds of microrganisms, and oil mitigates its irritating effects as well as enables the antiseptic compounds from tar to permeate deeper into the wound and clean it properly. These two combined are really magic. So good even hospitals in Czech republic use it to treat infected wounds, and still you can make it yourself if you have birch bark to make tar and some sunflower oil.
Lars, thanks for the bug dope recipe, I use " Grandpa's pine tar soap " I like the smell .
Thank you for all the informative videos share with us I hope you do some more with the metal detector give us some ideas of what one to use where to go it’s not front lines but you did pretty damn good finding dozer tracks out in middle of nowhere
I have never used it but peppermint oil I hear is pretty good against bugs, mice, spiders, ect..
Thanks for this video man, will try it for sure! Big love for Canada
If you try using wild geranium, you might get a lot of good result. Lonnie from Far North Bushcraft did a video on that- for whatever reason yarrow wasn't working where he was.
I have been looking for a good recipe. I am so tired of getting bit a 1000 times by mosquitoes when I go out and target shoot in my woods for hours and I don’t like the store bought stuff.
Thanks Lars for showing this. Wicked awesome brother.🤘🤘👍👍👊
Very useful "how to" and well made video Lars. You are really putting out some interesting vids for us this week. Well, as always actually. lol. ATB Moose
Beckolja, en gammal klassiker. Ännu en bra video :)
En klassiker :)
I carnt imagine what it’s like I live in the uk a few flies are annoying but what you have to put up with lol makes me itch just watching 👍
Hey! Love the channel! I've been following you for well over a year. I was wondering if you ever considered doing a fishing video in your local area? I would personally love to see what kind of fish you would be hauling out of your local lake or river. Where i live fishing is a staple to outdoor life.
Thanks for all your content 😊
Thank you very much :) The fishing around here is not really that great actually. We have fish here and people do fish, but it is smaller fish in my opinion :)
Thank you Lars .
Awesome video Lars! Thank you for sharing this with us.
Physical barrier is the best. There’s no dragonfly in your region? We are getting swarms of them devouring the mosquito population. I love them.
i really see what you mean. i would have never guessed that the russian countryside has mosquito problems the way we do down here in texas.
Very cool and very interesting! Thank you for sharing!
Mosquitos in the southeastern US must be wimps; have kept them away with odorless garlic tablets. I was rather surprised to see them going after you, considering how much you like garlic!
Cool. It is actually true, this with the heating under the nets, though one should not think so. I have a 3 D camo poncho with some "leaves" on, and quite large mesh holes, and even under this, it is more hot during the summer, when I am trying to watch some animals out in "my" little forest. (Pinseskoven på Amager. :o) ) I never see any though, only birds and bugs. The big game animals I only see when I am walking in to the place, where I want to sit. Then they hear me and run away. I only see their necks. :o) Nice Day!!!
it's awesome watching and learning these homemade remedies - more please!! Does Mrs Survival Russia know any traditional Russian homemade remedies?
I just got back from Vacation my friend, I'm catching up on the missed videos. Cheers my friend! You looked like you've lost weight?
I hope you had a great time Eric :) Welcome back.
Nice, I will try this next time Im out in the woods!
I like the videos you make sometimes with different recepies of both food and other stuff that only has natural ingredients.
I remember a video you made some time ago where you mentioned your wife was thinking about open up a youtube channel where she would show and make old time food recepies, whatever happend to that, is that still on?
Stay awesome!
The bugs are so bad this year I've considered a neutron bomb. I'll get over it.
Hi Lars: I was just watching a video by
OFF GRID CABIN LIFE. Vlog and Weekly Ramble.
TheBossoftheSwamp OFF GRID SELF RELIANCE & he uses a wide brim hat to ward off flies, etc. He says the black flies etc. don`t want to get under the brim of the hat ! It was published on July 8 2018. I`m wondering if this would work for you ? Keep up the good work !
Where did you get the jacket you're wearing in this video?
Always a great 👍 video Lars! Still watch in Alabama!
This look as if it costs far less than those spray bug repellents with DEET in them. I hope you don't mind if I add this video to one of my play lists.
Bugs and humidity,,,, You got the bugs covered. Too bad you don't have an old humidity remedy!
Have you tried citronella products
Awesome! Keep up the good work!
I have something useful for night fishing and camping. A translucent jug of water with a flashlight lens against it. The mosquitoes are attracted to it and they leave you alone. It is also a good lantern.
Hey Lars, I bet you could use your Recipe to Treat your knives and axes and saws as a Rust Preventor. Plus it would probably be good on Zippers on your Outdoor Clothes as a Lubricant. After all, it's just a blend of Natural Oils and Wax, correct? Hope this helps. Take care.
It works great for leather :) Good ideas Les :)
Survival Russia Thanks Lars. Plus it just hit me. The Scent on Steel, Leather, yada yada yada should add more of Barrier to the Bugs. BUT I'd be careful around a Fire. You don't want to be a Giant piece of Fatwood! Thanks again for your Recipe. Hmm, maybe spread a little on a Feather Stick as a Fire Starter? Anybody else have some ideas for "Dr.Lars Miracle Ointment"?
4:12 there's a fly size of Lars head, who finds a bigger one - wins! :D
How Long is The Bug Season? & They say the sense of Smell can trigger memories.
Insects are also afraid of geranium.
Анна Яско wow
Funny what will trigger a memory. Enjoyed the video.
On point! Very good!
Thank you for sharing that with us
Might as well add that neither B1 nor B12 vitamins act as repellent. It's an old-wives tale from a half-baked study in the 60's. It's been put to rest, but the info persists here and there.
Do you use birch oil too? Does the natives use anything similar or do they just learn to live with the bugs?
Have you tried any of the mosquito-proof clothes like Rynoskin? What are your favourite clothes for repelling the bites and what is the temperature there? I'm thinking of trying a thinner canvas anorak, know if it works?
I need to make up some of this. I’m like you. Bug repellent only when absolutely needed. Otherwise, why do I live here? Take care, Lars.
Since it has cooking oil in it, can you use it for stir frying? ...........sorry. This was interesting. Anytime you can come up with a more natural way, it’s always better.
Great recipe Lars bug dope is what we call it it works ! Take care brother
Bäckolja is geat!;)
This summer has been the worst bug hell in Finland, but also the one that made me stop caring, haha! Mosquitos, no-see-ums, gnats, horseflies... I guess I'm all scar tissue now, since I don't really notice them anymore. Inhaling those bastards is much worse than getting bit by them!
It's "Bug Year" here too! :) In August things will start to be better.
No deep freeze this year in Texas. A lot bugs and mosquitoes this year.
We had a very snowy winter and the spring melted the snow pretty quickly. The forests got flooded, so I guess all the bloodsuckers had the perfect conditions to multiply excessively.
Time to make a huge plantation housing for swallows, and eat up all the buggers.
My wife hates the smell of tar. I love it so there might be some issues for using that repellent :D Does it wash off easily?
It kinds of just wears off. Especially when it's hot outside. I don't smell of tar factory when I wash my face after a day in the woods :)
Whats the SPF rating and do i need to re-apply after swimming.
I wonder if coconut oil will work also?
The Red Bearded Heathen E. Jöhnsön Any oil should work as an emusifier for the beeswax I would think but then might smell like a coconut in a pine forest. :)
Good information lars
Adin !
XD thanks I was waiting for this recipe.
How long is the bug season in the Northern forest?
The bugs will taper off by August.
Lar's No. Farm it turn it into a food for animals even humans simple realy . Get into before someone else does, Cheers
Lars , please can you tell me what video it is where you mention hearing the "Preditor " .....Cheers
I don't remember as it's a long time ago :) I have uploaded almost 500 videos.
Lol..sorry to be a pain
In cycling it is rule# 5
Lars peppermint, garlic, onion, and marigolds all chase them pesky buggers off plant these around your house promise it will cut the numbers back my friend
Awesome.!
I don't blame you for trying to minimize DEET use anything that melts plastic and paint can't be too good for you.
Beer time and Survival Russia ;)
Cheers!
You are surrounded by bugs all the time, are sure you haven't accidentally made "bug attractor" mixture?
👍🏻
@4.10; I ducked
Ти руски ?
Я датчанин, но я живу здесь, в России))
