Richie was undoubtedly the best Ramones drummer. Credit to tommy for being the original and marky for all the years but richie was miles better. His background singing added a lot too. Wish they would have made it work.
Agree. The special thing about Tommy was the era (the first three albums). And Marky was efficient but sort of robotic, like a machine. Even though I don't like the era, Richie pounded those drums, such energy.
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 I actually really like your statement here, Tommy laid the foundation, Marky was the one to be the next to carry it on for decades but the short time Richie was in the band, his style definitely spiced up there delivery at the time. I'd put Richies speed and agility behind the kit against Marky's any day. Marky turned drumming for the Ramones into a robotic art form; Richie was so friggin' live and fresh and, I believe, inherently faster than Marky. Tommy was the originator, but I believe Richie was the best drummer of the lot.
I’d actually be willing to bet Richie couldn’t hold those singles like Marky could in those later shows. I’m sure for a period of time but Marky is an ABSOLUTE monster on those notes
Only Ritchie could play 'Wart Hog' properly. Marky just couldn't 'get' that that ultra-quick sequence you hear at 1:16 and 1:20 to work like Ritchie. Marky's attempts at those rolls sounds like he can't quite negotiate the curves and (very) briefly spins off. You can also hear it in 'Durango 95'. Ritchie was probably the best Ramones drummer, but a word must be said for Tommy whose blank 4/4 rhythms were the equivalent of Johnny's poker-faced speed-riffing.
