Reinard Synth#16 Roland XP50 No Audio... Dead DAC?

  • An episode about the Roland XP50 where I initially thought that the Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) was broken... I was wrong... As for a lot of Roland synths of that time, the smaller 10uF and 47uF SMD electrolytic capacitors started to leak, cause damage and... no sound out of the DAC although the DAC itself is perfectly ok. Anyhows: a video on how I discovered what was going on and how I repaired it.
If you want to recap the board you will need the following capacitors:
    - 16x 10uF/16V SMD Mouser Nr. 667-EEE-FC1C100R
    - 6x 47uF/16V SMD Mouser Nr. 667-EEE-FC1C470P
    - 2x 330uF/35V SMD Mouser Nr. 667-EEE-FC1C331P
    - 4x 100uF/35V SMD Mouser Nr. 667-EEE-FC1E101P
You can also use normal radial caps with the above values.
Incidental music: Me and my Yamaha Montage.
    Tools used:
    - Steinberg UR22mkII + Audio technica 2020 for voiceover,
    - Sony ZV-e10 as video camera (4K segments) Olympus E-M10 for the older HD segments
    - Manfrotto Magic Arm
    - Editing: iMovie (Easy bits) + Davinci Resolve (difficult bits)

Thank you very much. By putting the ittem number of the capacitors in the description you saved me a lot of headeche and time. GRACIAS

I've got this exact job to do next week. I changed 6 caps which got things working again but it's still a little noisy so I'm going to swap all the smd caps and see how it goes. Great video.

We had an XP10 and absolutely loved that thing. This video just reminded me of that legend

Amazing! I also have a XP-50, but need to find someone to repair, but it's pity no one can repair in Malaysia.

Pretty much all Roland gear with SMT caps from the 90s have similar issues, DAC, DSP, Booting, etc etc. Nice fix and well done. I've done the same with a VS2480. 90 caps on the mainboard alone : / simple enough when you can get to the mainboard : 0

Also have a xp50, no sound and display.
Replaced all the electro capicitors, repaired some pcb lines, destroyed by leaking caps.
    Still no sound and display😢
Update, was missing power on the analog part of the DAC, the capacitors leaked, and damaged the pcb, fixed this, and sound again.
The schematics are different in this part are different than real live on the pcb

Great job. Where did you get the schematics for the XP-50? My XP-50, which I bought new in 1995, has some issues. I'm about to take it apart and do some visual inspections for leaking capacitors and electrolyte damage, but it would be helpful to have a schematic to help me test continuity between various sections of the board to check for corroded traces.
Do you have a link to an online schematic?

Thank you so much for the video. Actually it forces me to review my work after I almost gave up and I found I forgot to solder two capacitors back 😂.
I do have a question though. After replacing all capacitors I got sound, but only in right channel. I don’t have a schematic you showed in the video, but maybe you can suggest what elements to check? I suppose it shouldn’t be too complicated, I know my DAC is working.

The schematics can be found here: www.synfo.nl/servicemanuals/Roland/XP-50_SERVICE_NOTES.pdf. Regarding the right channel audio: check using the schematics the signalpath from the DAC output to the right ausio output and see where it stops… there are some components inbetween that can go wrong (caps, opamps)

I have one of these but after changing the battery I can't seem to factory reset as the disk utility button won't engage, its seems that I can only get to this menu buy pressing Exp A No. 5 button but after pressing number 4 I can't get any further?

Hmmm… seems you really need to fix the tactile switches underneath the buttons, especially the “disk utility” and buttons underneath the display… or you can try to download to the XP the patches using MIDI sysex (be sure to turn on reception of sysex…)

Question for everyone on here -- Would swapping out the Aluminum electrolytic caps for conductive polymer aluminum solid caps with the same max voltage and capacitance rating or else MLCC SMD caps with the same voltage and capacitance change the audio characteristics of the synth in the power circuit or around the DAC?
I do not know much about this stuff at all.
I'm just wondering if there are capacitors that will sound the same (more or less) as these replacement panasonic SMD electrolytic caps with a longer lifespan?
If I'm going to recap my XP-50, I'd ideally prefer using capacitors that will last longer than 10 years. If MLCCs would sound OK, could I use those?
Otherwise, would panasonic Al electrolytic caps last 10 years?

hmmm… good question… To start, current brand SMD capacitors are way better quality than the ones used by roland in the early 90‘s. Panasonic, Nichicon, Rubycon, Elna or Chemi-con to name a few. You can safely use these. Use high temperature ones or their special „long life“ ones. For use in audio circuitry, an engineer I know recommended foil capacitors; but that is I think just an opinion…

Great video. Was this a paid job you did for someone’s XP50? If so, what would be a fair cost for this work? I have an XP80 with a similar issue. No sound output from anywhere except the Clock out. I’ve had the board since new in 96 and replaced the key bed last year, which wasn’t cheap! So I’d like to get it back up and running.

Not a paid job, this ist one of my hobbies… buy broken synths, repair and sell again… zero sum game. If this would be a paid job? Hmmm.. i would think they should book 3-4 hours for this plus about €20-30 for parts (cost driver: tactile switches)

Check if all voltages of the PSU are within spec, check if the CPU gets a reset signal at power on, check if cable connectors are not corroded… those are the first thing to check. if not comfortable with repairing electronics, please contact who can check that for you

Tenho um xp50 que esta morto. Apenas acende display, mas não tem informação na tela e não daí som. Nada funciona.... irei verificar por capacjtores vazados.... obrigado pelo vídeo espetacular.

If no info on screen and just a bar of black boxes: the display does not get a rest, or the CPU does not boot. If you have the equipment: check voltages of the power supply that they are within spec. Check cable from display to mother board (contacts clean and not oxidised?) and check if CPU gets reset signal. device manual (which you need to find the points you need to measure) can be found here: www.synfo.nl/servicemanuals/Roland/XP-50_SERVICE_NOTES.pdf
