Great progress! I'd add a emergency cable you could pull if the solenoid was to quit. I know you can pull the seat but it would save a ton of work. I will never forget a guy at a show deciding which window he could live without as it had shaved handles and the battery died
I'm a little concerned with the exposed nature of this mechanism intruding into the trunk space once the lid is closed. If the trunk is packed full, cargo pressing against it might keep it from opening. A "U" shaped protective shroud could prevent that.
Or an interior panel that hides it all when the car is finished.
love this channel as a retired antique , muscle car restorer for 42 years i love to watch you guys having fun ! im also a ford man
Thanks for watching!
Nice job. The smooth lid looks just right. Although I feel like that cable is going to be an issue when it eventually loosens. I think I would have made some kind of a solid link to take all of the slack out. But hey, lots of ways to skin a cat, right?
Know that he knows the length it would be "easier" to make one. 😎
The little things always matter, fitting modern components is great and more convential. The car is coming along really nicely.
A little clean-up and graphite on that latch mechanism might make it happier.
Just like we did it in the 50's only we used 6 volt GM starter solenoids.
Google "replacement cane tips" for your spring cap. Great video, she's coming along!
Nice job ! A rubber cap from an end-mill tool tube will fit it . The tool tube will have to be the diameter of the spring , so the cap slips over it , but will be tight enough to resist falling off . Lubricate that latch , now that you have it all working good . This car is really coming along nicely .
Use a large cane tip may fit on the trunk spring?
Probably have to shave a little more off the spring.
Been watching your show for the past few years now,i am 50 and my dad 91 enjoy this show more than most,we love old cars we have a 54 ford 2door customline, with original paint.looking at buying a 38 chevy truck maybe,Dad likes them shiny and original, and i like them both ways..Keep it up fellas, well done with the show
My new favorite channel on UA-cam. As a retired auto tech. I worked on flatheads love them ole engine
Thanks for watching!
Favorite Rockabilly artist.......................aaaaaaaaand GO ! ! ! !
Back in the '70s I used GM door lock actuators. They pull like crazy!
Neat solution to your trunk popper. Like the back in the day approach coupled with some modern upgrades I.e. nutcerts etc. my suggestion would be move the solenoid button to under the car, wire a n/c n/o relay to allow release only when the car is either off or on your choice. An auxiliary cable just in case of battery fail . Your local hardware store ( not box store) will have a Hillman selection of rubber/ nylon caps. Also the suggestion of heat shrink to dress it up works well I used it on one of my similar projects.
Can’t wait to see the 38 on the road. The paint job can definitely wait.
Whoever had the 38 before you got it had just cobbled it together and I'd say if anyone besides you got it, it would not be in the shape it is today. Most people would have just given up on it and MAYBE, might have just junked it! SO GLAD that you guys at ITG got it and are in the process of bringing it back to it's former "One time" pristine condition once again!!! EXCELLENT work on the trunk as you do everything else!!!!
Lubrication is the secret 😂😂
Nice shirt dude. Bit of west coast love to lucky
Lucky is the man!
heat shrink end cap?
GREAT VIDEO MATT!!! AND A GREAT UPGRADE!!! THANKS FOR SHARING.
@ 26:18 I breathed a sigh of relief re the rubber on the top. Was thinking all along it needed a rubber top. You may have to trim the spring some more. You get me every time I think you've missed something! Quality content gentlemen! This car is coming along rreally well. Great to see the Delorean drive, if I somehow missed it, could you drop a link to that episode of itg? If you haven't, would love to get a walkthrough on it, that's the '32 to have (ie Roadster I mean) great stuff, and great to see Steve getting more relaxed around the camera!
Like the popper! I would put the switch near the trunk and a kill switch in the car. Maybe machine a bumper bolt to hold the button or something similar. Great video as always!
My trunk lid was shaved back when. No latch. It stays down when you close it. I'll probably just keep it that vway.
I would put a curved triangle piece, billit or other type metal. Just curved and big enough to stick a finger under it and pull upwards instead of having to grab for the edge of the trunk. Maybe about 2 inches long tapered and shaped like a wave. Think they use to build something like it with a push-button release. Later styles had the key to unlock in the push button. But if going for the totally shaved and smooth look I understand.
Love the video, all of them actually. I would suggest adapting a threaded rod rather than the piece of cable...
Good job, good, great work.Always enjoy watching your video
man i remember that old cal custom packaging. i was going to suggest using "door poppers" to spring the lid but this is more trad. maybe you could french the reg plate where that mess is? looking awesome!
Nice! If you had put the washer in the middle of the spring and used a longer screw you could have made the spring adjustable. Just an idea.. :)
Excellent job, gentlemen! I enjoyed that! I want to know though: why do hot rods take so long to make? That job only took 1/2 an hour! 🙂
Cool feature to add the trunk popper. I had heard of kits having some sort of spring to keep the door or panel open a little but I had not heard of the old valve spring trick. Learned something new here and that’s a neat old school trick I’ll have to remember.
Grate job on trunk lid thank for the idle on spring u
Vale love it from Steve c from the state of Oregon USA
My thought was to drill and tap the solenoid plunger then fab up a short threaded rod with a flat end on it to mate up with the rod that goes to the latch. But your way works too. 😂 Nice.
edit: to dress that spring, maybe a small wheel cylinder cup would work. All sorts of sizes on Amazon.
Matt, another thing you could do to straighten out the trunk lid is to angle cut the inner structure, then use a pannishing hammer and smooth out the surface. Once the lid is smooth you then tig the inner back in, I know it is a lot of welding but you would have a better looking trunk lid.
Maybe not this one, but it would be cool to use one of those modern touch pad electric openers like they use on modern SUVs
Pity you didn't reverse the latch and catch, much neater with the solenoid mounted in the boot beaver
A key ring would also work, by doing that ….no extra cable to get snagged
19:00 I'll do my Dad dance (or now my old man dance) if you wish.
Put a rubber cap on top of the spring. It will soften the tension a bit.
Neat! Good job guys 👏
you must have one hella of a storage building
I wwould suggest some lubrication on hinges and latch mechanisms. Why make the whole system work harder than necessary? It sounds rather dry and stiff.
It’s the trunk prop and yes it needs lubrication. On top of a lot of things the car needs as it is still a project car.
I love this practical attention to detail.
Where are u mounting the licence plate
Awesome job, Simple is the best.
Nice Video.

Matt can you please give your viewers an update on your Ardun engine build? It's been a few years.
We’ve discussed it in a previous podcast. Video coming soon.
VERY INTERESTING AND INNOVATIVE!
I'm curious if PA has a state auto inspection required for the cars you build.
It’s an antique car. No inspection required.
how do you get in if the solenoid fails or the linkage falls off? backup pull cable?
Remove the seat and crawl in and open.
Body men use have tool called a spoon which was flat piece of metal that you reach behind there.
You can’t reach behind as it’s fully covered by the bracing.
I don't like the car .
Now you need to fabricate a filler panel for the bumpers, clean it up a little.
It’s on the to-do list.
Hi guys! Great job!!!!😍
Freakin awesome !!!
"My beautiful assistant in the car..." lol!
Haha!
Good job came out cool
Need a hood spring, back in the day they used to use starter solenoids, with that 4 bolt pattern that’s probably what they had.
Also you probably need to shrink the trunk skin you could use a 000 tip on your torch and do water shrink on it. I used to have a video on here doing it in a model A fender but its been gone for years. Im sure you know how.
The panel warpage is because someone was heating the panel so much to lead it. Heat shrinking the skin would only make it worse without access to the backside of the panel.
Dude!!! Nice job!!! ✌️
Ingenious 😊😊
Awesome 👍
nice job
like 1K !
Another trick is using the engine hood spring that opens the hood on a 60s or 70s car or truck.
Hook up a remote and that would be very impressive .
Kool
Nice job!
Grate how to
That would be spelled “Great”
@@afmajor322 Wow a spell check geek ! Why does it always seems to be one in every crowd !

Top job

Nice tutorial on classic solenoid installation! I learned something new today! Thank you! Go Iron Trap, keep moving forward!
Thanks for watching!
I'd use a piece of shrink sleeve over the coil spring to dress it up and keep the metal to metal rubbing down. Put te sleeve over the coil, heat it up and you are done. Lots of fiddling with this setup but that's Hot Rodding. It works pretty slick now. That nut-sert tool you use is worth it's weight in gold. You use it all the time and it is handy for your various project needs. I enjoyed watching the evolution on this one. Mike has a sense of humor having the deck lid open and there you are lying in the trunk (a visual pow). Thanks for another great episode!
Thanks for watching!
you don,t stay on one car very long do you ?
Is that a problem
@@JayBird-xi2ws nope
We bounce between projects as we’re waiting on parts or doing work in the background that isn’t filmed. It’s how we put out so much content regularly. 👌🏻
@@IronTrapGarage now i know why. thanks

You boys should be farmers talking about bocce
That was a botchy way to do the linkage set up like that it worked but looks crap
you're fun at parties, huh? 🙂
Have you ever thought that this might be only temporary fix to be able to open the trunk until they get things done and figured out ! It is after a project car which means things change as the project goes further along !
