    The 8 bells referred to in the Thanksgiving dinner on ship would have been 4 PM. A ship would have one cook and 2 or 3 assistant cooks depending on the crew size. Each individual mess would have a mess cook to help the ships cook fix the portions for his mess.

    Well done. You might also mention that because of Fredericksburg there were no serious consequences against the Irish for the terrible actions during the Draft Riots the following July. Only because everyone knew of their bravery the previous December.

    Christmas Trees gained in popularity among the non German population after Prince Albert had one put up in Buckingham palace. But there were many German immigrants in the US previous to that event.
