IACW Campfire Chats: Remembering Offaly's Role in the American Civil War
For our latest Campfire Chat we are joined by Danny Leavy, an Offaly man who has made his home in New York. Danny has been working on building a database of Offaly people who served during the American Civil War. We discuss his work, some of the stories he has come across, and what got Danny interested in those from his county who served between 1861 and 1865.

IACW Campfire Chats: How "American" were the 29th Massachusetts Infantry?
Переглядів 1318 місяців тому
Although not an ethnic Irish unit, the 29th Massachusetts Infantry served with the Irish Brigade through much of the Peninsula Campaign and at the Battle of Antietam in 1862. They are represented (and represented themselves) as very "un-Irish", a regiment filled with "Yankee Pilgrims" who were largely Protestant descendants of the first settlers of Massachusetts. But how true is this image? Tak...

I wonder has anyone done any work on Westmeath people in the American Civil war? Maybe I should do it myself. (Patrick Hussey is my name). I had a great grand Uncle who fought in the American Civil war. Christopher Hussey was his name. He arrived into New York in 1851, ended up going to Virginia in 1853 to work on the railways and in 1861 he became a private in the ‘Virginia Hibernians’ which became company B of the 27th Virginia Infantry (in the Stonewall brigade). He fought until 1863 when he died of heart disease near Winchester. His brother Patrick back in Westmeath was my great grandfather.

I have read alot of books about Civil War battles & campaigns. The horrors that those men witnessed, lived and died through are just hard to fathom. Of all the battles though I have to say IMO the most horrific from the accounts has to be Spotsylvania in May 1864.

The 8 bells referred to in the Thanksgiving dinner on ship would have been 4 PM. A ship would have one cook and 2 or 3 assistant cooks depending on the crew size. Each individual mess would have a mess cook to help the ships cook fix the portions for his mess.

Well done. You might also mention that because of Fredericksburg there were no serious consequences against the Irish for the terrible actions during the Draft Riots the following July. Only because everyone knew of their bravery the previous December.

I've only just stumbled across this video as I've been investigating our family history. Thank you for covering this so thoroughly, it's so interesting! The monument in Ballybricken for Patrick Clooney was restored in the 80's by my Great Grandad Tommy Clooney. I have old photos he kept of some kind of ceremony held in Ballybricken but my knowledge is very limited on this. My grandmother was also gifted a painting from America as one of the remaining descendants of Clooney.

Amazing piece. Where did you find the old newspaper articles from the time? Sad that we Irish have such a connection with the US Civil War but are never really though about it. I remember back to school and I think we had maybe 2-3 pages max. on the war in our Junior cert. history books (this was mid 90s), then for Leaving Cert. it was all Irish and European history.
