Hello dear sir. Since you mentioned it, may I inform you that Aglianico is also an ancient Greek grape. This grape was brought to Italy in the times of Magna Grecia 700-500BC by the Greeks that colonized southern Italy. It's name "Aglianico" derives from the word "Hellenico" which in Greek means "Greek". It has been brought back to Greece since 20+ years by one very famous winery in Greece, named Hantzimihali (Χαντζημιχάλη). They produce and sell it every few years, not every year, because they want it to be just right in order to make it and bottle it. I was lucky enough to drink a bottle of Aglianico Hantzimihali of 2008, which nowdays is very rare to find. One of the most impressive wines I have tasted for a long time! One of my favorite grapes

Glad you like it! There is a lot of drbate on this grape. My friend and grape geneticist Jose Vouillamoz has argued and published in Jancis Robinson’s “Wine Grapes” that Aglianico is actually Italian… regardless it can make lovely wines

Kir Yianni and assyrtiko wild ferment are two bottles that stuck with me from Greece. I giggled when I heard you say that you weren't there when the quality was low. I was there but I was a kid so I asked my parents. Their facial expressions were priceless! 😂 Apparently we did not miss anything from those good ole days. Take care & stay safe!

Kir Yianni is among our favorites in addition to the Wild Furmint from Gaia! Hope you are drinking well during all of this madness.

@@drmatthewhorkey Thank you! I still can! My friends and family made fun of me for hoarding wine bottles and keeping too many bottles at home. Now I can tell them that I was really just being prepared for the quarantine 👍😊.

Greek wine is excellent, especially if you're on holiday, on the beach, it is sunset, and you're eating a meal with it. 😅 I love Greek wine just for food pairing

Greek wines were always had fine wines, the issue was they didn't have marketing. I like Xinomavro (Ξυνόμαυρο) and I enjoy the wines from Drama and Naoussa area.

3:48 Recently tried assrytiko and was very impressed. We are heading to Greece soon. Can’t wait to taste other varietals. Do you have any xinomarvo (sp?) brands that we should look out for on wine lists?
