When americans mention kill count, they often forget about the fact that the main force fighting against north vietnam were south vietnam soldiers. North vietnam and people who follow Ho Chi Minh's side, won against South Vietnam, United States, Australia, New Zealand, Republic of (South) Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines whom sent soldiers while north vietnam only receive supply from China and Soviet Union, not soldiers. Sometimes they'll mention about military objective saying "US won all major battles". Basically refering to whenever US was able to capture a point. The time they manage to capture a point, they call it a major battle, but if you haven't noticed, they don't hold those points, so they leave, because unlike them, north vietnamese soldiers were able to hold AND DEFEND those points the whole time while they can't. So who really won in terms of military prowess? The people who are able to hold much longer and retake the objectives or the 9 years old who say they won by managing to retake the point for few seconds to only lose it right after?

Proud to be a Vietnamese 🇻🇳 my great-grandfather was a Confucian official in Nguyen Dynasty, but in 1945 he left and became a part of Viet Minh government and served it during wars against French second colonization and American invasion in Thanh Hoa province and the North-Central area. He really admired our President Ho Chi Minh and was respect as a nhân sĩ yêu nước who fought for the independence and freedom, unification of the country. He died when he was still separated from our family, so sad. My home village Phượng Đình in Hoằng Hoá District (now it’s a part of Thanh Hoá city) was booming by Americans after his death. Although I currently live in the USA for my study, I never forget it but admire my great-grandfather a lot with a huge respect. I really love our Vietnam flag 🇻🇳 and always want to come back to serve our country. For who may ask, my great-grandfather’s name was Nguyễn Đình Ngân, served for the Resistance Committee of 4th area (Thanh Hoá - Nghệ An - Hà Tĩnh) and then Vice President of Vietnamese Fatherland Front of Thanh Hoá Province, and a National Assembly Representative.
Fun fact about the MiG 21 and 17: The americans used their high-tech F-4 "Phantom II" fighter interceptor, which had a powerful radar and long-range AIM-7 "Sparrow" missiles which used the Radar to find their targets. The large Phantom didn't have a machine cannon tho, and was pretty sluggish compared to the light and nimble MiGs. The vietnamese pilots would either fly below the radar or force the americans to get in close-range dogfights in which the sparrow didnt have any use. The large Phantom couldn't out-maneuver the migs and was then shot down using 23mm machine cannons or short range "Atoll" missiles. In that way the aerial combat over vietnam mirrored the guerillia tactics used on (and below) the ground.
MiG-17 also lacked radar gunsight that american jets as early as the F-86 sabre in Korean war had, let alone radar itself, Vietnamese pilots continuously challenged and overcame us air superiority with basically no advantages at all except in their own skill and tactics. I was lucky enough to have a drunken conversation with an incredibly friendly roadside shop vendor who was an American war veteran on my first morning in Vietnam. How welcoming the Vietnamese are to those of us from an old imperialist enemy was very moving. Long story short, I'm a ML now and I really hope that Ho Chi Minh Thought will one day be available in English.

It's interesting Vietnam has one of the least exaggerated kill counts for fighter aircraft I've ever seen. Most countries have 3-5 times higher kill estimates than their opponents admit to losing. Whereas there's only a 1.5 times higher rate of claimed vs admitted for Vietnam vs America.

@@KrazyKratosFan I don't know, I've never really looked into it really. Here in Spain it's very restricted and civilians aren't allowed in gun ranges I don't think. Only ones available are for Olympic shooting or clay pigeon shooting, as well as regular hunting. Since I know people that went to America and shot real guns that's the only place I believed that you could do that. Like just going to a place and trying real guns. Here in Europe it's very different.
@@tofolcano9639 I don't know Spanish laws but most likely you can join a shooting club and get permit for guns but you won't be allowed to carry them around and automatic weapons are off limit.
It is unsurprising view given that America is a patch work of regulations when it comes to guns and most of the ones on the books have loopholes so large that it makes the regulations pointless. Which has lead to it being so easy to get a gun that even people who are clearly unstable can get a hold of one. Hell in some parts n of the country you can be blind and still buy a gun..Not to mention how easy it is to use one on another person and get away with it.

My Grandfather loved the jungle even though he was an Yugoslav like me he was an Partisan during WW2 in Yugoslavia (todays Bosnia-Hercegovina) and rose up to an lieutenant he went during French Indochina to Vietnam and had a meeting with Ho Chi Mihn in the Vietnam war he was a advisor for Vietcong and NVA Troops he was very good even better as the Soviet advisors the Partisans used Guerrilla Warfare like the Northvietnamese the was only one thing he hated the tunnels he survived the war and die 1990 1 year before yugoslavia colapsed
We in Italy had partisan guerrilla warfare during WW2 against fascism. I am very proud of them. Unfortunaly we didn't had a communist revolution because the allies powers forced them to give up their weapons in fear of a communist uprising. Maybe this was a good thing because in Greece they had partisans too but they were exterminated by British.

the vietnamese bravery, skill and determination to defeat the imperialist invaders has to be admired. They fought long and hard for their independence. I missed this museum on my trip in Vietnam, but they are so many others. This one is seems to be one of the best.
The Vietnamese air force was very small back then. They used their jets VERY carefully. The history Channel had a whole series about US jets fighting with Vietnamese jets. Hollywood only focuses on the Viet Cong part.
Americans take the war more seriously because we lost and it was all pointless. You still get dark humor from the war among vets if they had a few and are in the mood to talk about it.

You feel weird and sorry because like hearing a friend has lost a loved one, you regret that people went through (or still go through) pain because of your country's Gov't and that you can't do anything to prevent it. Some will say move on but I say there is nothing wrong with that intrinsic emphatic feeling of wanting to prevent past suffering and to let that feeling apply to helping people in the present.

ALSO ANOTHER FUN FACT. Militarily speaking the Vietnam War was difficult situation for the US. Because it involved a conventional force(the NVA) and an unconventional force(and the Viet Cong) Outfitting your military to fight both is extremely costly and difficult. If its even possible. If the US focused on the NVA our rear lines would be vulnerable to the Viet Cong. Conversely if we focused on the Viet Cong we would lose the cities and our fronts to the NVA. For awhile there was talk of converting the US Marines to a COIN force to fight the Viet Cong while the US Army handled the NVA. This never came to fruition The US MILITARY thus from the get go was set up for failure in Vietnam. When General Westmoreland asked for more troops, he was told no(because we would have to pull troops from Europe, and the US did not think winning in Vietnam was worth sacrificing/risking Europe, mind you it looked like ww3 could happen any time back then) We he asked if we could simply recruit enough troops, again, nope, budget concerns, congress told the army if they wanted more troops, they could convert tank divisions to infantry divisions to fight in Vietnam . Again this was out of the question. Tank divisions were expensive, and further more tanks would be needed if the cold war went hot. Again, winning in Vietnam was not worth sacrifing Europe and losing a hypothetical ww3. The US sent its military into Vietnam under prepared and just told them "well....just figure it out!" And get this. The US never mobilized its reserve and national guard soldiers to fight, because the US government didn't want to make it look like it was fully committing to a full scale war in Vietnam. That's why we had a draft(we didn't need to, we had the numbers, but that would've required mobilizing the reserve and National guard, but we didn't, so we drafted) Final side fun fact. The British are credited with inventing counter insurgency tactics. But the US actually created them in the Filipino war. But that war was so ugly to us. We wrote a book on how to fight a guerrilla war then put that book on a shelf in West Point where it was forgotten. Thus we had to re-learn ALL OVER AGAIN how to fight guerrillas in Vietnam. Well regardless what COULD'VE happened. I'm glad the USA and Vietnam share very friendly relations today.

I was lucky enough to have a drunken conversation with an incredibly friendly roadside shop vendor who was an American war veteran on my first morning in Vietnam. How welcoming the Vietnamese are to those of us from an old imperialist enemy was very moving.
Long story short, I'm a ML now and I really hope that Ho Chi Minh Thought will one day be available in English.

It's interesting Vietnam has one of the least exaggerated kill counts for fighter aircraft I've ever seen. Most countries have 3-5 times higher kill estimates than their opponents admit to losing. Whereas there's only a 1.5 times higher rate of claimed vs admitted for Vietnam vs America.
I was there last summer. Didnt went to the shooting range as we did not have much more time left. Great video.

@@KrazyKratosFan I don't know, I've never really looked into it really. Here in Spain it's very restricted and civilians aren't allowed in gun ranges I don't think.
Only ones available are for Olympic shooting or clay pigeon shooting, as well as regular hunting.
Since I know people that went to America and shot real guns that's the only place I believed that you could do that. Like just going to a place and trying real guns. Here in Europe it's very different.

@@tofolcano9639 I don't know Spanish laws but most likely you can join a shooting club and get permit for guns but you won't be allowed to carry them around and automatic weapons are off limit.
It is unsurprising view given that America is a patch work of regulations when it comes to guns and most of the ones on the books have loopholes so large that it makes the regulations pointless. Which has lead to it being so easy to get a gun that even people who are clearly unstable can get a hold of one. Hell in some parts n of the country you can be blind and still buy a gun..Not to mention how easy it is to use one on another person and get away with it.
@@tofolcano9639 Given Spain's history, I would assume Spain would have a strong gun culture, but then I remember who was in control from the 40s to 70s.

My Grandfather loved the jungle even though he was an Yugoslav like me he was an Partisan during WW2 in Yugoslavia (todays Bosnia-Hercegovina) and rose up to an lieutenant he went during French Indochina to Vietnam and had a meeting with Ho Chi Mihn in the Vietnam war he was a advisor for Vietcong and NVA Troops he was very good even better as the Soviet advisors the Partisans used Guerrilla Warfare like the Northvietnamese the was only one thing he hated the tunnels he survived the war and die 1990 1 year before yugoslavia colapsed
We in Italy had partisan guerrilla warfare during WW2 against fascism. I am very proud of them. Unfortunaly we didn't had a communist revolution because the allies powers forced them to give up their weapons in fear of a communist uprising. Maybe this was a good thing because in Greece they had partisans too but they were exterminated by British.
You guys would've become Soviet puppets had you gone communist. And too my knowledge "real" communists say the Soviets were bad.

the vietnamese bravery, skill and determination to defeat the imperialist invaders has to be admired. They fought long and hard for their independence. I missed this museum on my trip in Vietnam, but they are so many others. This one is seems to be one of the best.
This is such a beautiful place that used to be a place of death and violent imperial oppression.

The Vietnamese air force was very small back then. They used their jets VERY carefully. The history Channel had a whole series about US jets fighting with Vietnamese jets.
Hollywood only focuses on the Viet Cong part.

When I was there it was full of western tourists, the shooting range was packed and it was really creepy walking around hearing the gun shots

Here are a few days examples divided into two major categories.
1)Urban Area
-Detriot (especially because of urban decay)
-Chicago
-Los Angeles
-Twin Cities (especially because of militant indigenous tradition)
-Also, most mid sized cities surrounded by deindustrialized areas, especially in the midwest
2)Rural and "4th World" areas with decent geography
-Parts of the "Black Belt with good first and hill cover(especially because of New African Resistance Tradition
-Parts of US-Mexico Border that are sympathetic to migrants (especially because it allows for easier smuggling of supplies)
-Parts of rural Apalachicola (especially areas of WV with abandoned mines and militant union tradition)
-Pine Ridge "Reservation" because of decolonial tradition and because of masses in 4th world conditions.
-Rural Northern California because of fourth world conditions and ideal landscape

You feel weird and sorry because like hearing a friend has lost a loved one, you regret that people went through (or still go through) pain because of your country's Gov't and that you can't do anything to prevent it. Some will say move on but I say there is nothing wrong with that intrinsic emphatic feeling of wanting to prevent past suffering and to let that feeling apply to helping people in the present.

ALSO ANOTHER FUN FACT.
Militarily speaking the Vietnam War was difficult situation for the US. Because it involved a conventional force(the NVA) and an unconventional force(and the Viet Cong)
Outfitting your military to fight both is extremely costly and difficult. If its even possible. If the US focused on the NVA our rear lines would be vulnerable to the Viet Cong. Conversely if we focused on the Viet Cong we would lose the cities and our fronts to the NVA. For awhile there was talk of converting the US Marines to a COIN force to fight the Viet Cong while the US Army handled the NVA. This never came to fruition
The US MILITARY thus from the get go was set up for failure in Vietnam.
When General Westmoreland asked for more troops, he was told no(because we would have to pull troops from Europe, and the US did not think winning in Vietnam was worth sacrificing/risking Europe, mind you it looked like ww3 could happen any time back then)
We he asked if we could simply recruit enough troops, again, nope, budget concerns, congress told the army if they wanted more troops, they could convert tank divisions to infantry divisions to fight in Vietnam .
Again this was out of the question. Tank divisions were expensive, and further more tanks would be needed if the cold war went hot. Again, winning in Vietnam was not worth sacrifing Europe and losing a hypothetical ww3.
The US sent its military into Vietnam under prepared and just told them "well....just figure it out!" And get this. The US never mobilized its reserve and national guard soldiers to fight, because the US government didn't want to make it look like it was fully committing to a full scale war in Vietnam. That's why we had a draft(we didn't need to, we had the numbers, but that would've required mobilizing the reserve and National guard, but we didn't, so we drafted)
Final side fun fact. The British are credited with inventing counter insurgency tactics. But the US actually created them in the Filipino war.
But that war was so ugly to us. We wrote a book on how to fight a guerrilla war then put that book on a shelf in West Point where it was forgotten. Thus we had to re-learn ALL OVER AGAIN how to fight guerrillas in Vietnam.
Well regardless what COULD'VE happened. I'm glad the USA and Vietnam share very friendly relations today.
