I just imagine the fear in seeing “Cheating F*ck” on your screen while using gama “hacks”. I’m kinda dumb so I would think that the devs are spying on me through my bedroom window.
Yeah this also caused a misconception that actually caused people to get banned for using gamma YEARS after this got fixed cause i guess other staff thought it was still considered cheating.
I was a CTB player in 2009 to 2011, not sure anyone heard of "Double Screen" cheat, where you setup 2 monitors, one with HD+FL and the other with normal. And someone just "dual- open" the osu at the same time, and look the normal side, while let the "HD+FL" side score submitted. This method can be used for all modes, including osu + taiko and ctb.
I did not know using the gamma tool was considered cheating. I even use it in every tourney I play that involves flashlight, I just thought it was like using a skin to make reading easier or so. Whatever...
I was thinking the same, it doesn’t strike me as any different from using a skin or modifying your sound output for better quality. It’s not like it requires cheatware either, it’s a basic option in every monitor/computer.
@@joao34386 It's a gray area, but I think the point is that if you're able to see the text as far out as the "cheating fuck" line was, then you were getting an advantage over most players. After that, I'll FC each practice map until I can do the whole thing. That's how I got 19th on Rockefeller Street.

That dev naming and shaming them is something I wish all developers would do. Its just too bad that most devs are far too corporate to want to shit on cheaters like that.
That's generally not a good idea. You want to fight cheaters, but you don't want to provoke them. It has been shown time and time again that if you want to pick a direct fight with these kinds of people, they will drop _everything_ to ruin your game, no matter what it takes. Cheaters and hackers have terribly fragile egos. They love more than anything to be a nuissance, and seeing stuff like that is motivational to them, not intimidating.
It's generally not a good idea because false positives are hard to eliminate. It can be the difference between a chargeback and being liable for defamation.
False positives exist, and it's a scenario you don't want to be in. One example was with a MMO where there was a false positive for years of people getting banned, that was being ignored (basically people going "you deserve the ban" and "hah just another cheater" and being called out), before someone finally had dug down into the details of said program after they were banned. They found the false positives to be just that, and basically outed the devs (which they admitted to after the info got revealed and reverted bans on those that were hit). Also i find it funny for this game they would ban for gamma adjustments, where as it's an accessibility or QOL with anything else.
The "gamma cheat" just seems like something you would do in your computer settings, but its a graphic setting in the game? Weird they even considered that cheating
im pretty sure that the in game gamma setting at max is still not enough for the 'cheating fuck' message. the bottomline would be the pushing of the limits of one's eyes and monitors (by also maxing the gamma of the hardware) just for the easter egg.
@@blackroberts6290 It's probably something like that. Where a player who actually needs high gamma because of their monitor, wouldn't see it. But some one who uses high gamma to be able to see things they're not supposed to, does see it.

@hello there you conviently ignore the "unfair" part. it's literally not unfair. And being dishonest isn't directly relevant? How does being dishonest have any inherent relevancy to cheating. Being dishonest is irrelevant if you're not creating an unfair advantage. This isn't unfair, therefore not cheating. External programs are generally cheating because they're generally against TOS and bannable offenses. Otherwise, they're fine. Its not cheating if its allowed. A game exploit isn't cheating. i'm surprised someone hasn't found a way to run osu on a separate computer with flashlight mod turned off, synced up the computers, and then looked at the computer with flashlight mod turned off while having their mouse or stylus hooked up to both computers

The "outing people for changing their gamma" seems like it might have created a bunch of bans for people who noticed a small difference in their game or people who just have a bright monitor. Imaging you notice a change in a game you like playing and then get banned because you noticed it, that doesnt exactly sound like a good system.
I mean i like the humor.. but, gamma can't rly be considered cheat when this is literally a visual preference and a normal graphic setting, if u play any FPS, a lot of time u need to change contrast, bright, gamma, etc.. so the visibility become the clearer possible, not to mention superior monitors that have even more options, would all that be considered cheat bcse give advantage? i don't think so, so in the gamma case the fault were totally on the devs themselves for letting this flaw.
@@YanYanicantbelievethistakenffs I dont quite agree, sure ur personal view of what is a dick move is up to u, but if i have a option in the game that make the visibility better why shouldnt i use it? for instance, i disable motion blur and depth of field in any game, this make me see clear and aim better, i dont think this is a dick move. I can agree that abusing a exploit like this one in OSU is a dick move since obviously is a "flaw/bug" that mess the ranks, even though i don't classify as a hack/cheat... Now in your gas example i disagree 100%; if you are talking about a native option of the game dont make any sense i refrain from using it just bcse i have a better GPU than the other dude, i will be prejudiced bcse i can run the game with better graphics? nonsense.
@@YanYanicantbelievethistakenffs Lower end PCs or situations mandate that though. Which likely means then the gas was poorly optimized. This is true in this case... as the developer could've simply tested this once and saw the issue. Basic optimization to make sure everything works would've fixed this. So now the innocent were hurt in an attempt to stop the cheaters.
Literally no one is saying high gamma on its own is cheating, genius; your first clue should have been the fact that the exploit was patched not through removing high gamma settings but through remaking the flashlight edges to have less blur. The problem wasn't the actual high gamma, but the fact that the flashlight's edges being blurred led to them unintentionally making the screen being visible on high gamma settings in places that looked completely blacked out on lower gamma. Knowingly exploiting a bug is literally 90% of cheating in multiplayer games; just because it's due to an oversight by the devs doesn't mean it's an intended mechanic, game devs+testers are only human and many glitches slip through the cracks.
I think the idea of considering changing your monitor's settings to be cheating is ridiculous in any context. It just changes the display settings on your monitor. If it gives you an advantage that could be deemed unfair then the problem lies with the game. I've turned my gamma up to high levels in many games that do not properly implement their darkening effects and, while cheesy, I don't think anyone would consider it proper "cheating". Most monitors let you adjust gamma without even having to do anything from the computer, you can usually do it through buttons on the side. I dunno, the whole thing just seems silly.
100% agree. It can be done by anyone and doesn't modify the game files at all. It just sounds like cope from people who didn't think of doing that. And cope from the devs because they didn't account for it
The whole point of flashlight mode is that it's high risk and high reward, to remove the risk so you only profit is fucked especially in a point based competitive game
It's not the brightness itself that was the problem, but the fact that the soft gradient made way more of the screen visible than intended for higher gamma settings. If it was just a spotlight with completely hard edges, gamma wouldn't give you any advantage in seeing the blacked out part of the screen, and no one would have an issue with it.
While it being cheating may be debatable, it's undeniably cheese. Even kids using the contrast dial to get through rock tunnel w/o flash knew they were cheesing it.
I still remember the infamous banwave few years ago and it does show he is not joking when it come of finding cheater although one of the common cheating method people encounter is replay stealing till this day although some of them disguise as leaderboard ranker on lower difficuilty mostly are hard diffs range aroun 3.5-4.5 star with dt mod
Willy with another banger! always interesting on how dev's stop cheats or "unfair" advantages in their game. Fighting games have this big time mostly a moral thing given the tool can be undetacted by the anti cheat, then the consistant battle of keeping the game and the cheat updated.
Gamma is an adjustment needed for some monitors that are bad at contrast, my laptop has a tn panel and I need to crank it to 100 in most games just to reach the recommended brightness.
Which is why... drumroll... it was patched. "devs being ignorant for not fixing it themselves" No shit sherlock! That happens in games, pretty regularly. Believe it or not, game devs aren't omniscient and things slip through the cracks.

That Gamma cheat "fix" is actually kind of BS and anti player. It essentially acts as a "fuck you person who has their gamma up high for reason the game can't possibly know" and then possibly a ban to anyone who has screen or vision issues that require there gamma to be up high for any reason. Don't ban or harry people for changing display settings, you don't know why they changed it. It's also fucking over the game play for someone playing in high gamma mode is super anti accessibility. Seriously it's the game dev mentality of "fuck over a hundred innocent people if it keeps the cheaters out" like the dev is Henry J. Waternoose III from monsters Inc.

I feel like this is an option in several low visibility game modes, regardless of the game. Speed runners of several RPGS abuse brightness options in dark levels to reach a similar effect, and while that’s less of an issue as more people will do it it’s obnoxious to watch as a viewer because it makes the game look significantly worse
Relying on player honesty on the mechanic and blaming the player for using mechanic that dev have no way of detect it, and was implemented in nearly all monitor is a cry baby action for dev. If he just fix it, not sending a message like that, then I will praise him. It’s like he says “how dare you took advantage of my bad implementation on opacity overlay”.
As someone who doesn't play Osu!, I'd argue that increasinv gamma isn't cheating, but a normal part of setting up the video game to your personal preferences.

Well I can agree that modifying files is a no. But changing monitor settings is a fair game unless specified somewhere in license and this is still a stretch.
By that logic macros should also be allowed since they're not modifying the game files, either. The people in this video are gained an unfair advantage due to an oversight by the devs, and it was then patched to make the game visibility field more equal for players with all settings, making the game more fair for everyone. Cry about it.
@hellothere9520 Just for clarification your logic explanation doesn't make sense. One item is a function literally built into the equipment that is in every monitor. Another you have to get either specialized equipment or programs...
Now I understand why I got banned once a few years ago. They did not state the ban reason, but I sent a support request email and they lifted the ban 2 days after. My laptop's monitor (default) looks a bit dark to me, so I crank up the gamma and contrast a bit to make it look white-ish, which is more comfortable to see at night. That may be the reason back then.
@@sasdagreat8052 Maybe they query all monitor setting values and detect changes in them? But you're right, there should be no way they can detect that.
did you even watch the video? turning up gamma (used to) make the mod a lot easier to play and it was fixed already. people still use it to read high ar and it's not really considered cheating anymore
@@minami3747 It shouldn't have ever been considered cheating in the first place instead it should have just been fixed and explained that they fucked up with how they set it up to work initially. For me it is very clear that this is not what should have been done in response to this since there are valid reasons to have your gamma settings turned way up or down, it is good that it is fixed now but that doesn't mean that the developer handled it the right way to begin with.
Darkness isn't a rare gameplay element because it annoys people, it's rare because cheaters exist and devs want to give the best chance against the cheaters as possible.
Gamma isn't cheating, it's literally just using available computer/game settings. That just sounds like cope from people who didn't think about it. There is no unfair aspect as everyone can do it, and there is zero game modification
It fits under exploiting an unintended advantage; by your logic exploiting gold duplication glitches in mmos isn't cheating either. They literally patched the damn advantage out without sacrificing the actual intended functionality of the setting but cope.
@hello there correct. It's not cheating. it's an exploiting a glitch. The only person at fault is the devs for allowing it to happen. Using glitches isn't cheating. It's just going against the devs' intent. These are not the same. I see no issues with using glitches, though it's your own fault if using glitches trivializes the game for you. And its not unfair as everyone can do it.
@@himedo1512 Dude, what? When you are deliberately cheapening the experience for others who play as intended by putting your illegitimate scores on leaderboards intended for those players and not players who abuse exploits, how is it "their own fault" if that rightfully trivializes their hard work for them? Those leaderboards are meant to reflect actual skill in the game, not for people who want an easy way to appear more skilled than they are; again, how is misrepresenting how you got your scores not cheating? If you want to use glitches in a singleplayer game by all means do it, but the moment you start using them to get ahead in a competitive setting that presumes playing the game as intended, you are a cheater. Knowingly using dishonesty/misrepresentation of your tactics in a way that gets around a competition's rules is cheating, no matter how many technicalities you try to use to justify it as "techinically" not being cheating. You are misrepresenting yourself as being better at the game than you actually are, thereby taking the spot of a player who is actually better at the damn game. This undermines the entire point of a leaderboard.
I honestly stopped playing 6 years ago because I found myself getting at most #25 on most new maps and then all the cheaters came in. I was no longer one of the big boys anymore. I fell off the board and even lost actual friends because of it.
Sending a screenshot of this video in a Discord group chat, I suddenly realise my secondary monitor's gamma setting is turned way higher up than my main display! Couldn't even see the "cheating f**k" otherwise. ;w; Additionally, monitors look kind of odd when viewed from either a low or high angle... and since my secondary display is rotated veritcally, it's like the gamma dynamically changes depending on my head's position. >.
I'm not sure if this would work, but I feel like a possible anti-cheat solution would be to run a check in the code to see if pixels in a certain area are still black. If the flashlight files were modded so that the screen was still visible, the color checking code would automatically detect the non-black pixels and ban the user automatically. Shadow banning could also be another possibility so they keep playing without knowing they're banned (unless they check the leaderboards and notice their score isn't showing up) EDIT: To clarify, I only was talking about the file hack, NOT the gamma monitor hack
@@TBiscuit1 I didn't mean for the gamma hack, I was just talking about the the hack where they edit the game files so the overlay doesn't appear anymore.
Checking whether all of the pixels are the correct color every frame is probably the least efficient solution imaginable lol; seriously, you'd be lucky if you could get 2 frames per second with all that extra processing overhead. All the server really needs to do to accomplish this exact thing is check that the code used to display flashlight mode (as well as an image, if there is one; I forget whether it's programatically created or just an image overlay lol) is unmodified one time before the song even starts.
I don't play osu, I just watched this video randomly on the toilet. But how is changing display settings for optimizing visible area considered "cheating"? Competitive players always optimize their setups for the game they are playing. Throwback to people buying 4:3 monitors to play CS:GO.
I'm not sure you and I have the same definition of "revenge", but the video was well made and I enjoyed it despite the title giving me a different impression of what the video would be.
Its more of a moral thing. The game is putting certain restrictions on the player but the player is basically disregarding a high percentage of said restrictions to get more points easier when at the same time other players have not done so and still get the same amount of points as someone who didn't put as much effort into it. Anyways it isn't an unfair advantage anymore, thanks to the fix gamma isnt considered cheating nowadays.
In the same way that abusing a gold duplication bug in a game would be cheating: knowingly using an uncaught exploit to gain an unfair advantage over the other players.
How is changing your gamma "cheating"? Imagine people with max gamma by default playing osu! and being deemed cheaters. It's not like the advantage is actually unfair, literally anyone can alter this if they have a monitor that supports it (i.e. most displays and OSes). At that point, are people with 144Hz monitors "cheating" because they have faster display times than others?
I can't imagine someone using max gamma as their regular viewport and if they are they really should turn it down for the sake of their own eyes. If there was a false positive I'd have to imagine it was the 0.1% of the 0.1%. He did the proper solution which is remove gamma from the situation so it doesn't matter what levels it's played on. If he considered refresh rate cheating he could absolute restrict the polling rate and make it not a factor but he doesn't see that as a big issue. Which I have to agree with, the benefit you get from higher refresh rate is there but is not as significant as a 40% increased viewing circle in flashlight
@@RichterVonFuchs In brighter environments sometimes I'll boost my gamma as things look too dark. I've actually been in bright enough natural light where I needed max yet it didn't strain my eyes. The significance of cheating shouldn't matter, 1% or 1000000% it would still be considered cheating.
This is similar to the slowdown in mirrors edge or the serious Sam invincible enemy that would follow you everywhere. People would complain online about a glitch only pirates would see only to reveal themselves as the pirates. I think there was one group, don't remember exactly, that did video editing tutorials that hat to fight piracy and they released made and released a fake tutorial onto a torrent site and had multiple people complain about the new tutorial being all weird and, iirc, demanded refunds for a product that was never on sale to begin with.
We need more developers using malicious compliance to do their jobs. Like peppy he could have fixed the flashlight issue in kther ways but the way he did it just spotlights cheaters woth that hall of shame and so on.
Using gamma isn't cheating its just not being stupid (im not a OSU player im a cs go player) In cs go we use streached and high gamma to see better (its not cheating, its just called being clever)
I mean, it depends. If anyone can do it (with no advantages given by how much money they spend, of course), and it's not explicitly stated that you CAN'T do it, then it shouldn't count as cheating. At the end of the day, the people who make the rules have the final say, regardless of how they may be perceived by doing so.
clever my ass you fucker using high gamma in the past literally made you see things YOU WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SEE NORMALLY, to put it in a csgo player's perspective it means being able to see other players through a wall
I dont play osu, but the gamma thing is stupid. Thats not cheating. Its like saying its cheating to have better eyesight or because you have a faster reaction speed. Its an advantage maybe, but the point of competition is to use every advantage at your disposal. Cheating is when you take something unnatural or foreign to gain said advantage. Theres obviously a little more involved but in the scenario osu Its a stretch to call it cheating.

That dev naming and shaming them is something I wish all developers would do. Its just too bad that most devs are far too corporate to want to shit on cheaters like that.
Part of why Steam is so toxic. They have banned the entire concept of name and shame...they will ban the reporter every time.
Valve loves cheaters.

Its just trivializing the game. It's no different than grinding in a video game, other than time it takes the player. You cannot blame players for exploiting a devs failures. QA testing exists for a reason.

I've used Nvidia geforce experience filters to defeat too dark dungeons

By that logic macros should also be allowed since they're not modifying the game files, either. Flashlight is a mod in osu! which reduces the visibility of the screen to a small circle around the player's cursor.
This area around the cursor only makes it slightly harder for objects close together, but as they get farther, memorization is needed to perform well.
The circle of visibility also reduces in size when the player builds up 100 and then 200 combo, making it even more difficult to see.

At that point, are people with 144Hz monitors "cheating" because they have faster display times than others?
did you watch the video
@@twiq.2903 Yes I did and that still doesn't change my point
Its like the lowering graphics to get rid of grass issue, its an obstacle meant to be there.
Happy birthday OSU!Flashlight mode
"There will be cheaters" - shows Forsaken
Touché
i used to think « ppy » was short for puppy
puppy the osu creator
I’m so glad i’m too dumb to cheat 😂
the game is open source, you can just compile it with the flashlight see through..
Chadest Game developer ever.
holy shit i thought osu was like a year or two old not 14+
Record non flashlight osu game. Playback video behind osu wile using somthing like glass2k to make is transparent.
It's funny how he put a "removed replies counter" under one of the posts
1:26 use a program to generate a circle instead of a texture
Should have made it so that they had to turn their gamma up so much it scorched their monitor.
We need more developers using malicious compliance to do their jobs. Like peppy he could have fixed the flashlight issue in kther ways but the way he did it just spotlights cheaters woth that hall of shame and so on.
"Cheating fuck" circling around the screen is fucking hilarious for osu
There will always be chapter, thats just too sad
Using gamma isn't cheating its just not being stupid (im not a OSU player im a cs go player) In cs go we use streached and high gamma to see better (its not cheating, its just called being clever)
I mean, it depends. If anyone can do it (with no advantages given by how much money they spend, of course), and it's not explicitly stated that you CAN'T do it, then it shouldn't count as cheating.
At the end of the day, the people who make the rules have the final say, regardless of how they may be perceived by doing so.
clever my ass you fucker
using high gamma in the past literally made you see things YOU WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SEE NORMALLY, to put it in a csgo player's perspective it means being able to see other players through a wall
Theres obviously a little more involved but in the scenario osu Its a stretch to call it cheating.
modifying gamma was not considered as cheating back then, he said that It was
"gamma abuse".
I don't like how passive aggressive peppy is. He seems far less respectable than everyone is making him out to be. Especially when he considers hardware smoothing to be cheating.
From what's in this video alone, Peppy does seem kind of overconfident and egotistical.
Whether that was or is an accurate assessment overall, I don't know.
...but this video certainly hasn't painted a pleasant picture.
