    • @ThatGuyInTheBack007
      @ThatGuyInTheBack007 9 місяців тому

      False positives exist, and it's a scenario you don't want to be in. One example was with a MMO where there was a false positive for years of people getting banned, that was being ignored (basically people going "you deserve the ban" and "hah just another cheater" and being called out), before someone finally had dug down into the details of said program after they were banned. They found the false positives to be just that, and basically outed the devs (which they admitted to after the info got revealed and reverted bans on those that were hit).
      Also i find it funny for this game they would ban for gamma adjustments, where as it's an accessibility or QOL with anything else.

EVERY, and i mean EVERY SINGLE exploit in an online game that communicates with a server rather than running entirely on your machine is due to "a failure of the dev to account for something", so i have no clue what point you're trying to make here. are gold duplication glitches in mmos suddenly ok and totally fair to use because it's tecnically the devs' fault for not catching every glitch that could possibly cause it before release?

    • @himedo1512
      @himedo1512 Рік тому +7

      @hello there you conviently ignore the "unfair" part. it's literally not unfair. And being dishonest isn't directly relevant? How does being dishonest have any inherent relevancy to cheating. Being dishonest is irrelevant if you're not creating an unfair advantage. This isn't unfair, therefore not cheating.
      External programs are generally cheating because they're generally against TOS and bannable offenses. Otherwise, they're fine. Its not cheating if its allowed.
      A game exploit isn't cheating. Its just trivializing the game. It's no different than grinding in a video game, other than time it takes the player. You cannot blame players for exploiting a devs failures. QA testing exists for a reason.

      Literally no one is saying high gamma on its own is cheating, genius; your first clue should have been the fact that the exploit was patched not through removing high gamma settings but through remaking the flashlight edges to have less blur. The problem wasn't the actual high gamma, but the fact that the flashlight's edges being blurred led to them unintentionally making the screen being visible on high gamma settings in places that looked completely blacked out on lower gamma. Knowingly exploiting a bug is literally 90% of cheating in multiplayer games; just because it's due to an oversight by the devs doesn't mean it's an intended mechanic, game devs+testers are only human and many glitches slip through the cracks.

    I think the idea of considering changing your monitor's settings to be cheating is ridiculous in any context. It just changes the display settings on your monitor. If it gives you an advantage that could be deemed unfair then the problem lies with the game. I've turned my gamma up to high levels in many games that do not properly implement their darkening effects and, while cheesy, I don't think anyone would consider it proper "cheating". Most monitors let you adjust gamma without even having to do anything from the computer, you can usually do it through buttons on the side. I dunno, the whole thing just seems silly.

      It's not the brightness itself that was the problem, but the fact that the soft gradient made way more of the screen visible than intended for higher gamma settings. If it was just a spotlight with completely hard edges, gamma wouldn't give you any advantage in seeing the blacked out part of the screen, and no one would have an issue with it.

    That Gamma cheat "fix" is actually kind of BS and anti player. It essentially acts as a "fuck you person who has their gamma up high for reason the game can't possibly know" and then possibly a ban to anyone who has screen or vision issues that require there gamma to be up high for any reason. Don't ban or harry people for changing display settings, you don't know why they changed it. It's also fucking over the game play for someone playing in high gamma mode is super anti accessibility. Program the game and make assets so that it preforms the same under all settings for display, or cut your losses and accept the possibility of "cheating" in this very mild way.

    • @poppy_null

      Its more of a moral thing. The game is putting certain restrictions on the player but the player is basically disregarding a high percentage of said restrictions to get more points easier when at the same time other players have not done so and still get the same amount of points as someone who didn't put as much effort into it.
      Anyways it isn't an unfair advantage anymore, thanks to the fix gamma isnt considered cheating nowadays.

      In the same way that abusing a gold duplication bug in a game would be cheating: knowingly using an uncaught exploit to gain an unfair advantage over the other players.

    How is changing your gamma "cheating"? Imagine people with max gamma by default playing osu! and being deemed cheaters. It's not like the advantage is actually unfair, literally anyone can alter this if they have a monitor that supports it (i.e. most displays and OSes). At that point, are people with 144Hz monitors "cheating" because they have faster display times than others?

      I can't imagine someone using max gamma as their regular viewport and if they are they really should turn it down for the sake of their own eyes. If there was a false positive I'd have to imagine it was the 0.1% of the 0.1%. He did the proper solution which is remove gamma from the situation so it doesn't matter what levels it's played on. If he considered refresh rate cheating he could absolute restrict the polling rate and make it not a factor but he doesn't see that as a big issue.
      Which I have to agree with, the benefit you get from higher refresh rate is there but is not as significant as a 40% increased viewing circle in flashlight

      @@RichterVonFuchs In brighter environments sometimes I'll boost my gamma as things look too dark. I've actually been in bright enough natural light where I needed max yet it didn't strain my eyes.
      The significance of cheating shouldn't matter, 1% or 1000000% it would still be considered cheating.

People would complain online about a glitch only pirates would see only to reveal themselves as the pirates. I think there was one group, don't remember exactly, that did video editing tutorials that hat to fight piracy and they released made and released a fake tutorial onto a torrent site and had multiple people complain about the new tutorial being all weird and, iirc, demanded refunds for a product that was never on sale to begin with.

      I mean, it depends. If anyone can do it (with no advantages given by how much money they spend, of course), and it's not explicitly stated that you CAN'T do it, then it shouldn't count as cheating.
      At the end of the day, the people who make the rules have the final say, regardless of how they may be perceived by doing so.

    I dont play osu, but the gamma thing is stupid. Thats not cheating. Its like saying its cheating to have better eyesight or because you have a faster reaction speed. Its an advantage maybe, but the point of competition is to use every advantage at your disposal. Cheating is when you take something unnatural or foreign to gain said advantage. Theres obviously a little more involved but in the scenario osu Its a stretch to call it cheating.
