This is a traditional Japanese Noh mask exhibited in New Orleans Museum of Art.
If you look up the mask from the below, the mask smiles. On the other hand, you look down the mask from the above, the mask frowns.
It works in a fairly simple manner, based on the curvature of the mask. When you look at a curve at different angles, it bend more or less on either side which gives you a smile or frown. The masks use this for the mouth, eyes, and brows which help form multiple expressions.
Very ingenious design, but creepy af.
Noh masks are some of the best traditional masks ever designed.
the mask seem to have its own life and expression. it's cool yet it's kinda creepy at the same time.
