Are you someone who burned Blu Ray discs? Let me know what you would use them for below.
Haven't burnt anything since 2005/2009 & those were to backup games from GameCube, Wii, PS1 & PS2 with mini/reg DVDs.
you probably wont even find a handful of people in the comments who did that
No. The only reason I have a DVD drive is because my PC is old and came with it. I don't even know if it can write or if it works.
I remember respectfully waiting for the disc to burn took quite a while but was worth it.
I had one of the dual blu ray HD dvd drives. But couldn't justify buying the disks I did burn plenty of dvds and cds for data. But as you said I moved into using multiple sata drives to store media and important data
oh yeah the convenience of digital, where you fork out 80-100 bucks just for them to yank it out from under you, yeah, no thank you
What's one game that was removed from people libraries. Not the online store but someone personal digital library, because I have yet to hear of one.

As somebody who pays more attention to music: everybody predicted the death of physical music decades ago. Now tapes, CDs, and vinyl are making huge comebacks
Thankfully DRM-free music is still somewhat mainstream and has been for many years. Amazon still sells MP3 copies of songs.
They're not making a huge comeback , only a small community of ppl are interested in physical media for music. There's a reason why the music recording industry switched to counting Spotify & UA-cam views instead of just album sales & why record stores are dead.
Not at all. The market is niche.
@@cryptocsguy9282 I have like five record stores within 3mi of my house and they do tons of business. CD sales are up for the first time in years. No, your average Taylor Swift or Beyonce or Morgan Wallen fan isn’t buying CDs or records, but Metallica fans absolutely are. People also forget that globally, these media never went away; DVDs are still outrageously popular, smoking Blu Ray and 4K discs because of this.
It's so weird that the Walmart that I go to has an entire rack for vinyls. I can't believe those are still in stores. But CDs, while I do like them, are overpriced, often more so than DVDs.

Physical media will never die. There will always be people who prefer to buy physical. If sony doesnt want to do it, someone else will.

Nintendo ❤
It’s inevitable, it will die the same way streaming took completely over the movie and music industry, yes, I’m aware there’s still physical media on those markets but it’s just a niche now.
And don’t get me wrong, I love physical games and will probably stop playing newer games the moment the consoles get completely digital, but it will happen eventually.
Nintendo will probably be the last one standing in that regard, but it’s not because they want to support us physical media buyers, but because they’re the slowest ones to catch up with the industry standards, just take a look at their online services and how horrible is to browse and use the e-shop, they’re like 10 years behind MS and PS in that regard.
Don't worry, China will save us. Those people are not going to miss business opportunities on this. But sadly it may be kinda niche so not a full comeback
If PlayStation 6 has no CD drive, I'm not buying it
the ps5 pro doesn't even come with a disc drive. We're already there.

@@b4rs629 you need to sit back down, kiddo. They are pushing for digital-only but the disc is available as optional. A great casual percentage is fine with digital convenience. Yet they cannot simply ignore physical sales and numbers as they'd be denying sure revenue.

Discontinuing physical media = never owning your media
Same here. Physical is Superior
The one good thing about Nintendo being so out of touch is that they'll be the last company to switch to all digital.
smh
Switch is the only console where Physical games have a big advantage over digital, since games can be played on the cartridge itself rather than requiring the games to be installed to even play them. Obviously the problem does exist mostly with 3rd parties cheapening out and using a smaller cartridge. But we can vote with our wallets and not buy those games.
Even though my Switch library is already 99% digital, I really hope Nintendo continues to let consumers choose what they want.
Japan in general. They still have a rather decently side physical PC game market.
@ I'm the opposite of you. I try and get every game physical as much as I can. Just being able to pop a cartridge out and put it into another switch is great. Being able to share games with friends and family. And finally saving the internal storage space. Digital games on the switch feels so limiting in comparison. And yeah that storage space. Even though I do have a 512gb SD card

But why? Can't the patient bring a USB drive or SD card? This was a bit of a problem for me last year because the hospital only saved stuff on CDs... it was an ordeal to try to find a blank CD in this day and age...
This whole thing has been click baited like hell: Sony announced they're ending production of re-writable media, not pressed discs. Re-writable media isn't used so much anymore because we have affordable HDDs, SDDs, thumb drives, et cetera.
The only thing this is going to affect -- sadly, in my opinion -- is the production of bootlegs on sites like Etsy for films that have never gotten a physical release.
I made a similar comment. Not a fan of Jon making these videos. He knew the story behind this. But made this video for views. He likes to stir the pot
It will hardly affect them, Sony isn't the only manufacturer of BD-R media nor are they close to the most popular either. Verbatim would be the most popular brand and they will continue to be manufacturing BD-R, they even also still do CD-R and DVD-R.

Gamers have to push back at some point. You can’t want to get rid of physical media and charge us $100 for a game with micro transactions… like gaming isn’t your whole life. Go touch grass so companies start losing money.
They are already losing money because they're putting out shit games that don't sell.
The physical discs are going up in price too. And the physical disc doesn’t have the playable game anymore. You are delusional if you think physical vs digital affects game price or microtransactions. Physical media isn’t magic that cures cancer. It only applies to digital vs physical. Rich physical media collectors need to get over themselves. You’re not important like you assume you are
The first and easiest step to take is to just never buy brand new games again. Pick up a pre-owned copy. I don't buy digital games unless they're on a fire sale (ie 90% off).

If we can't buy physical games I'm done buying them period!
No you're not
I'm not surprised at discs being phased out, BUT we all know the main reason companies want to phase out physical is so they can have full control of price and distribution . We will own nothing and we will be happy. Remember any digital good you buy is renting, you don't own it and it can be taken away at anytime. Physical games you own, that is yours, you can sell it, trade it will it away it has value, and it doesn't go away. Although these days physical copies won't run without being connected to a server and at that point might as well just pull the bandaid off and make it all digital.
Very true
You can copy games to a drive so that you have it forever. Yes, there is the old argument of "what if the drive breaks?" What if you lose a game when you move or pack things up? Just because it is physical does not mean you have it for life. If Sony takes a game down along with the page and trophy support for the game, The PS5 could say, "the disc inserted is no longer supported," so your disc is rendered useless.
According to Sonys user agreement we don’t own physical either and can’t pass it around. It’s all just license to play it.

@@zenvultra Built-in buddy. People shouldn't have to shell out extra money for an all digital future if they're not willing to provide the storage space within the console at launch and I shouldn't need an external drive to play the game. That defeats the entire purpose of the console. I put a 1TB drive in my PS4 at one point. I don't even own that many digital games, but it's full from all the DLC and updates the stupid thing does. I switched to PC this generation, bought a 6TB drive, and have barely scratched the surface of how much stuff is on the drive. That why when the inevitable happens I have a plan involving micro SDs, 3D printing, glossy photo paper, a way to make stickers, and a steamdeck or switch 2 (since I don’t think Xbox or PlayStation will ever have expandable storage like that). Butnthe prices have gotten so outrageous and the studios have become so comfortable with giving the absolute bare minimum in return. Games like Apex legends are dying because the focus has become 100% on selling as many 30-40$ skins and the content updates are the absolute bare minimum people are fed up and quitting and the game is slowly tanking. Single player games are very similar. They even want to increase prices to $100 with the goal being gta makes the first increase and then all the roaches come out like ubisoft and EA to also charge $100 for a game. This will all end very poorly for them. The economy sucks and people cant afford as many games as they used to, increasing prices and getting greedy is only going to hurt them. Watching Ubisoft squirm as they crash and burn and now EA is the best entertainment ever. Best part is that its free entertainment.
@ssz28envy Agreed. The fact people "pre-order" online games shows the intelligence of modern consumers.
@TheHollowBlade I can't even justify the $70 price tag. I have a zillion games in my backlog. For example, I am playing the RE 3 remake that I bought for some insanely cheep price awhile back. I just can't pay that much for a game.
@@matts1978 same here dude. I cant justify it. Here in canada a game will cost 89.99 after tax its already exceeding $100. If prices increase to 100 freedom dollars it will cost me liken 139.99 maple bucks plus tax would likely be over $150 for a single game. They can keep their games if that becomes the case. Like you i have thousands of games in backlog so i got shit to play lol.
The community isn’t cohesive enough to figure out what to really be mad about. I write this comment every time. It’s only about 1st party titles having competition, that’s all you should care about, mostly Sony and Nintendo, physical games only matter because Nintendo/Sony’s online store competes with GameStop etc, that’s your price control. So demand the EU make monopoly digital stores illegal, problem solved.
Something I've never understood: By buying digital, you're eliminating the middle man, as well as the cost of production and distribution. So why is digital not cheaper than physical?
I'm tired of these stories about physical media is over physical media will always be superior over digital media
yes but Sony is not going to manufacture blu ray discs anymore. That's just one form of physical media, not all physical media. There are many.
If they are going to force digital, I’ll just go 100% PC. Most of their 1st party games come to steam eventually
It will backfire physical copies are better
Sony trying to destroy gaming. Nintendo saving gaming single handedly.
I’ll become MORE of a retro gamer and only buy new games I want on a heavy discount decades later.
I think the reason why Blu-Ray burning wasnt as populare was because the blank media was much more expensive than DVD-Rs.
You also couldn't easily get large spindles for them affordably either, let alone in a physical store for the longest time. The drives themselves were also always expensive and over time, most systems started to drop having drive slots altogether for reasons surrounding the form factor and because of trend changes.
Going external is possible with drives, much like you can with most 3.5" hard drives, though not very many do it and quality control seems to be rather weird with drives that were made, not only because of having the right for support for most bluray disc types.
SD cards have exceeded the storage and transfer speeds of discs. I would imagine games will start using SD cards for all consoles in the next generation. Disc drives are expensive, power hungry, with lots of moving parts, SD cards remove these issues. But most likely we’re heading towards a download only future where we own nothing and are at the mercy of these companies.
If Microsoft continues to sell disc Xbox consoles during the time Sony goes digital only i think they'll make a pretty big comeback.
It’s disappointing to see Sony take this approach. I’ve been a gamer since the Sega era, and if I’m unable to own a physical copy of a game I purchased, this will likely be the last generation of gaming for me. The same applies to physical copies of movies as well. 😢
Nintendo will continue to crush the competition because of this. In my opinion it wasn’t just the form factor, it was really the physical support of the switch that interested the collector’s. As the other companies continue to phase it out, Nintendo hopefully realizes this keeps on the current trend.
PC is not the same btw, your library stays with you through new hardware unlike consoles. Big difference.
$100 games, all digital LOL! Can't wait to see them starve themselves. These companies will learn the hard way I guess.
They should be really careful. There are millions of people out there with hardware they paid good money for. modchips and jailbreaks are a thing (and there's no concerted funded effort yet). People move quickly when slighted.
As a pc only gamer this doesn’t bother me at all. I have access to any digital game I’ve ever bought and if I can’t find one I can simply emulate it
Great! Shame its affecting everyone and everything else though.
All those digital games you bought you don't own, if you have the GOG store and games on there that's a valid argument.
It'll bother you one morning you wake up and half ur game libarary isn't there anymore haha
Good luck with all of that. You are reliant upon a single company to give you access to pretty much all the games you've ever bought with Steam. There have been instances where someone gets banned, and loses their entire library in one swoop. Another set of instances where people have been locked-out of their account for one reason or another, and also lost access. It works for as long as it works, but one day, you will be incredibly sorry.
The new rental/ try before you buy model is Game Pass
Physical is having ownership of your games never let them take that away from you
Physical retro games still sell like hotcakes, and always will. And I just started collecting blue rays.
The beginning of the end… this is not a good thing at all. I’ve seen digital movies pulled from folks account after they have paid for them. iTunes did this a while back to where they just pulled music….
Indeed but not for Nintendo games.
If its not physical, its non-buy-nary
Sony will learn soon enough they are nothing with out the consumers. The ps6 all digital!? Yeah no!!! How about they focus on releasing more games on the ps5 and maximizing the full power of the console.
If I cannot buy physical, I will not buy anything new. Console infrastracture is different from PC. Time and time again console networks stopped services for their "obsolete" systems and other digital content - sony and funimation, games having music removed, etc. On PC with little know how, you can easily make digital into physical... not sure about epic, but others definitely.
Digital everything only makes sense if your a storefront like steam where sales are usually way more than physical ever gets. Digital DOES NOT make sense if you end up having to pay way higher prices all the time.
This is why I love Spawn Wave, because you did not jump to conclusions and instead approached the news in a cool level-headed manner💖😄
This title is bad. This only affects RW Bluerays.
Clickbait and hyper misleading.
Look at all of the dumb, "didnt listen, didnt comprehend comments"
This is actually an example of a ragebait vid from Spawn.
A bit sinister actually.
Digital only people aren’t real gamers. They’re just mindless consumers who love renting over owning
I don't care anymore, I have enough physical games at home so many that it's enough for the rest of my life
If everything goes cloud gaming only as well at some point I’m cooked. I can barely stream movies where I’m at
The support xbox gamepass is getting is staggering and dangerous.
Im out when that happens
Whatttt HELL NAH.
RIP Playstation. Their entire 2025 has fumbled.
I haven't upgraded to current gen games, I'm just going through the older games I haven't played yet.
If I have to pay for these overpriced games I don't own I'm not playing it
Sony is done. Digital ownership is convenient at 10% of the physical price. You won't produce physical games that gamers can trade or sell? Get ready to sell Triple A digital games for 10 bucks. No? Good luck staying in business without the 40 year gamers buying your stuff. I bought a second ps4 pro after buying ps5 and psvr2, why might that be? 3D and 2D Bluray playback. Games that you can sell for money, even if not much, something is better than nothing.
Digital games are convenience physical games are ownership I would never trade ownership for convenience
🐛🍔
So they're going to try and put Gamestop out of business despite people reselling their PS5 is the only thing that made PS5 Pro buyable?
Not everyone wants digital only games smh
Meanwhile, not only does Nintendo Switch 2 still have its game card slot, that same slot can also play OG Switch games.
Thank goodness for backwards compatibility. 👍🏼👍🏼
I would like to announce sony is no longer a game developer or console maker in my eyes. Eventually I will only be retro and pc.
