These voicings are called "4 note rootless voicings", and they are super important to master if you are starting jazz music. You HAVE to practice in every key, whether that's going through them chromatically or through circle of fifths or whatever. Jack only showed 1 inversion, try starting your minor 7 as 3 5 7 9 as well. This is all necessary foundational work before moving to "Drop 2" voicings and open 4ths.

I hope Jack knows how inspirational he actually is. Such a legend & a hyper-talented musician to boot... Andertons is so much more than a music store, I bloody love you guys.
    Merry Christmas to you all!

Jack the piano teacher. Who would have thought? I will say this: your rhythm is great when you play alone. You have a great feel. That said you are not exactly Cateen. Your lessons are practical and down to earth.

This C major 2-5 voicing is why Holding Back The Years by Simply Red is one of THE easiest 80s hits to play. The intro climbs from D-E-F then back down to A-G. Then you just move back and forth between D and G. Invert the chords a few times and you’ve played the whole song!

😎 playing boss as always! For those who want to know the names of the inverted chords. Dm9 - G13 - CM9 (type b rootless voicing) could also play C69 for the I chord?

I just on a whim bought a second hand piano. I can't play yet, but I can hold shapes, and I don't know what your talking about, but I just knocked these three chords for at least an hour thinking I was a funky session player

Suggestion: Could you use some keyboard MIDI software (Chordie, MIDIculous, or whatever keyboard MIDI software) that you overlay with the video so that what you play on the keyboard is highlighted in the MIDI keyboard? It makes it quite easy to see what you are doing.

Awesome tutorial! I devised a similar 2-5-1 method using the root position m7b5; drop the last two fingers by a semitone each for the 5, and then the lower 2 (thumb and index) to the 1st and 3rd of the target major (1)...
Thanks mate. Love your honest approach!

Brilliant video 🙌🏻 So is that style called “lounge room” ? I’m sure I saw someone comment something like that in another video. I randomly came across a video of Hugh Laurie playing a bluesier version of the same kinda style? Incidentally, if anyone hasn’t heard his bands music, go listen right now. Superb. Anyway, “posh” is probably the best name for it. 😂

My aim is just to learn to play by hear.
Will I be better buying a digital piano or a midi keyboard with 88keys?
    Please suggest a model 🙏
    Thanks & regards

If your Jack, handing out your number to chicks and getting Gin and Tonics while playing a lounge gig. In all seriousness though, often nothing in a band setting. Piano can take up a lot of space in the mix and sometimes it’s best to hang back. If there is not bass player you can do bass lines or octaves in the left hand and it would sound great.
