  • Outnumbered, outgunned, and outproduced by the Allies, the noose seems to be tightening slowly but surely around the Third Reich. For Joseph Goebbels, salvation lies in a radical transformation of the economy and society - Total War. But first, he must sell it to the German people.

When learning about Goebbels, the methodology of his lies and tricks are uncomfortably familiar. Many people around the world have received information with the same sinister twist from all sorts of newspapers, radio, television, and even UA-cam channels. While in its infancy, it can be difficult to grasp where this can lead to. That's why we make these videos, so that future generations can learn the destination of the road that the many Goebbels try to place us on.

@@dusk6159 not really. WWII is the war that shows us the limits of strategic bombing. Its imprecise and its morale effect minimal. The resources spent on thousand bomber raids was largely worthless because it outstripped the actual infrastructural damage dealt. Had the allies focused their air force on close air support and raiding supply lines be attacking trains and supply depots, it would have been far more effective. The last war where large scale strategic bombing was attempted is Vietnam, and it failed there too. Nowadays its accepted that outside of using smart munitions to efficiently eliminate high priority targets, air forces should only provide close air support for ground forces.

@@volodymyrboitchouk There is no ground support to be doing on a non existent invading army a continent away.
Strategic bombing and similar means as a whole literally crippled and immobilized Germany + took out millions of soldiers and resources from the front, usually by the mere effect of having to stand guard from the US and UK/Commonwealth operations.

    • @volodymyrboitchouk
      @volodymyrboitchouk 2 роки тому +33

@@dusk6159 the evidence is against you there, friens. Even during the war it was admitted that the strategic bombing campaign was having minimal effect on Germany. I'm prety sure it was even discussed on this channel in the past. Top airforce officials in the US admitted that, far from weakening the German resolve and.puling forces away from other fronts, air raids were stiffening German resolve or had no effects at all.
Another interesting thing to note is that the USSR never engaged in serious strategic moving, even when it had the chance. If strategic bombing was so effective, then why didnt the Soviets use it? The US had vast resources to throw around and strategic bombing was implemented to give the airforce something to do.

@@tomwh1993 After the 1945 Labour landslide, the CPGB had for a short time, three MP's, mainly in the East End of London.
They didn't last for a number of reasons, the massive social reforms enacted by the Attlee government including most famously the NHS, which rather took away much of the appeal of Communists.
Attlee himself had no time for Communists, as his Foreign Secretary Ernie Bevin told their conference (he was the major player in the diplomatic effort to persuade the US to do something very foreign to them going back to independence, being part of an alliance for security that was binding, which became NATO), 'there has never been a dictator who talked of peace but prepared for war, you just remember that'. In other words, Stalin is little better than the recently defeated Nazis (after all, Hitler and Stalin agreed in 1939 to both invade Poland and as time went on his mass murdering became clearer).
Bevin was just reminding any fellow travellers on the left of the party that 'Uncle Joe' wasn't so cuddly, or as Stalin called those in the West who had ignored or just pretended not to see things like the deliberate famines and the gulags, 'useful idiots'.
The CPGB membership in the UK peaked not long after the Nazi invasion of the USSR and the supplies the UK and later US gave Russia, previously the CPGB had opposed the fight against Hitler, calling it a 'capitalist war'.
MI5 bugging of the CPGB's modest London HQ revealed post war, a declining party almost wholly reliant on small donations from the USSR, it also revealed the USSR were not getting anything much from them.
The real split in the CPGB came in the 1956 brutal suppression of Hungary by the Soviets, some trying to somehow justify it, the rest just leaving the party.

Sparty, I sincerely hope, one day you and the gang will travel to Budapest to do maybe a more extensive special on Carl Lutz, Raoul Wallenberg, etc. I would really love to help you out here wherever I can 🤗
Another topic: I would like to share with you a poem by Hungarian poet Miklós Radnóti (spelled Miklosch Radnoti), who was a key witness of the Holocaust, being himself a Jew. He was drafted into forced labor several times. His third he did not survive - he was shot, when he was too weak of hunger to continue the forced march.
My personal favorite poem of his is actually titled "Forced March" ("Erőltetett menet"). I could find the official English translation:
"Crazy, who, from collapsing, gets up for new advance,
and moves in stumbling torture the limbs to get his chance,
and still is heading forward as if with wings he'd fly,
in vain the trench is calling, he does not dare to die.
He'd answer to your question, what for this strain's to stand,
that there's a dear wife waiting, and perhaps a wiser end.
Yet this good guy's quite crazy, through his old home behind
since long the winds are blowing, from blaze and ashes blind.
The back wall fell to pieces, the plum tree's broken down,
and gotten rough from scaring those nights so sweet at home.
Oh, couldn't I believe yet - not kept in heart alone -
    that there is still a homeland, so dear for me to roam;
if there were still the old porch, and sitting in the sun,
and peaceful bees were humming while cools the jelly plum,
the ending summer dozing o'er the garden's dreamy flair,
and midst green foliage swaying the fruit so firm and bare,
and Fanni stands there waiting, blonde, the hawthorn hedge aside,
and shadows written slowly by a slow late morning's light. -
Could all this still come true yet! The moon's so round today!
Don't stride ahead, my comrade, shout at me - I can't stay!"
I hope you consider looking into his biography a little and leveraging his works to give back some of the mood of the time back then through his eyes/thoughts.

    Horrific juxtaposition.
On another note, Goebells surely must be one of the strongest orators in modern history. The man surely knew how to whip up a crowd into a frenzy with rhetoric. However self destructive, intellectually corrupt and dishonest his speeches were. He knew how toto portray wild enthusiasm of his speech by his audience to the wider public listening on the radio who would get hooked line and sinker...

There is a very easy reason to why germany actually throughout the war never 100% went for a total war economy (yes even in 1945 it wasnt a total war economy like the soviets for example despite the situation): WW1 and the revolution
The nazis feared that any hardship on the people at home would loead to a repeat of 1918/1919. Germany had a total war economy during WW1 and it ended in the country collapsing (which the nazis saw as one of the greatest desasters in german history).
Hitler didnt want to be dragged out of his palace by the starving masses...

There were food shortages and other society breakdowns at home that caused German civilians to lose support for WW1. I’m guessing the Nazis we’re trying to keep the home life as normal as possible, and combined with war victories on foreign soil would keep the war (and thus the Nazis) popular with the German people.

I do very much appreciate your presentation everytime I watch. I have a question: I'm having trouble discerning when did the Allies unequivocally know of the Holocaust? At 0:50-0:55, you spoke of, "...recent Allied propaganda campaign focusing on the genocide of the Jews". I have heard that Churchill gave a speech sometime before D-Day, I think I have heard as early as El Alamein battles, telling the world about the Holocaust after an Ultra intercept. Escapees spoke of the hell and the genocide, but they weren't believed. It is often portrayed that the be Western Allies didn't know anything until they came across camps while on recon.
Could help clarify this for me? If you have already made an episode that I have overlooked or missed, my apologies.
Thank you, very very much for all of your work
P.S. I recently watched a video of a young Black Man in America tell a story of being harassed by the police for no reason, and he was wearing attire from a football club in England(I researched it. Wanted to know who is selling these and why is a younger generation wearing them), that was an SA Brown shirt, red band included. No Swastika. It was sad that the juxtaposition was missed by most everyone in the video, the comments, and indeed, UA-cam.

It seems the nazi theses are the ones that were in "the protocols of the elders of Zion". It was published in 1902-1903 but was it the ones that went into Goebbels and Hitler?
Otherwise, your thesis that Peter was Peter stopped the war because there were too many wars is quite not standard.
Generally, it is thought that Peter was a big fan of Frederick the Great. Frederick offered Eastern Prussia to Russia to end the war, but Peter wanted only a medal. This saved Frederick who otherwise would have lost everything.
In a sense, this attitude of holding off as much as possible makes sense considering that Frederick was saved at the last minute. When Roosevelt died before the end of the war, the Nazis hoped that his successor would change sides. This did not happen, fortunately, but here was their hope.
At this point of the war, it was clear to the Nazis that they would lose. But Peter having saved Frederick the Great at the last minute makes this crazy attitude actually look reasonable.

Great video. The dishonesty of using Friedrich II's image in Nazi propaganda really struck me. To me, Friedrich's character seems nothing like Hitler's. His policies promoted tolerance and freedom (relatively to monarchies at the time), and he saw himself as a servant of the state, not its "essence" (the the concept of the Führer). In fact, Friedrich and Hitler probably had very little in common with each other (they both liked dogs, I guess).
Also (and slightly off-topic), wasn't Prussia nearly beaten in the Seven Years War, until Empress Elizabeth died and the pro-Prussian Peter III became Emperor?
Is any of these assessments correct?

Goebbels was picking up on a shift to the left in British elections which would see Churchill

defeated in 1945. The by-elections tended to tell that story, with fringe candidates picking up surprisingly large votes and occasionally winning. There was a wartime truce, so by-elections were normally not contested by mainstream parties - for example, a previously Conservative-held seat would not be contested by Labour or the Liberals, in an attempt to give the new Conservative candidate a free run. But instead independents and eccentrics would throw their hat in the ring.

There was no great numbers of people idling. The total war drive recruitment covering women between 16 and 45 found only 1.5 million potential workers, with 700,000 of them requiring part time positions. Hans Kehrl, never believed Germany could acquire more than 700,000 additional female workers. This does not in any way replace the lost workforce gathered up for the meatgrinder in the East. • @spartacus-olsson
      @spartacus-olsson 2 роки тому +2

It’s a bit of a complicated thing to cover. The simple reason is that while the Nazi leadership consistently refused to entertain any peace talks whatsoever, some individuals made openings to the United Nations Allies. It’s difficult to see how you should rate that on any scale of credibility. Thus, the better way to handle those events is within the story when it happens - we have covered some of that in Indy’s coverage, and we will in Astrid’s soon.
The long and short of it? Until January 1943, the Germans could have entertained a great variety of peace offers, but refused to do so. We can only speculate what the terms would have been, since they refused to entertain such an idea, and by the basic logic of war and diplomacy, you don’t offer peace terms until you are asked, and you don’t ask until you’re about to give up, or you have achieved your goals in a position of strength. Neither was ever achieved.
By early 1943, by all military and economic standards Germany was in a position when they needed to sue for peace, but by then they had committed such incredible atrocities that the only condition on offer would be unconditional surrender. The reasoning behind that was that it was clear that to achieve lasting peace, the Nazi regime (and those of the other Axis) had to go, which in turn means they could not be a viable negotiating partner.

I am not, however, sure that this slip penetrated much at the time. Victor Klemperer, for example, was aware of the Total War speech and wrote some about it, but he never mentions "eradication." By this point he was pretty aware of what was going on, and if any of his friends had noticed this, it would have circulated in the Jewish gossip network in Dresden.

People forget that the “hard working” Hitler had a lot of daily “Executive time”.

Yeah - I wouldn’t mind having his schedule: starting the day at noon, frequent breaks for snacks, end the day around 6pm with a walk with the dogs and a film. Hitler had it made, and he threw it all away on some stupid plan to invade the Soviet Union while on some serious drugs!
I suppose people never really know what they have until it’s gone…

@@wilberwhateley7569 He didn't end the day at 6PM, he sometimes had conferences late at night. And as far as drugs, Dr. Morell gave him mostly vitamins and injections of caffeine.

I'm very happy that my great-grandfather, Karl Franz Hildebrandt, decided that after WW1, he had enough and moved to Switzerland!
And funny note: Recently we did DNA tests in the family and came to the conclusion that from our german side, they were not even technically german to start with but originally from Scandinavia and Ireland/Scotland! :D

I must say, I've been watching this channel since the beginning and your speaking and overall screen presence have improved remarkably. (It was good to begin with, but it's quite excellent now.) Well done Spartacus, and thank you for doing what you do.

The Casablanca declaration was possibly the worst move the Allies could have made at the time. Between this and the Morgenthau plan it gave propagandists in Germany all the fuel they ever needed to drag it out to the bloody end.

"Total war means total destruction". Not only Goebbels fault. WW1 in retrospect was a failure as an armistice was signed when Germany suffered minor war damage. It allowed later Hitler to claim that the German army was stabbed in the back. So this resulted in the Casablanca conference in 1943 to decide that only unconditional surrender would stop the war. Another reason for the Germans to fight to the end: the Nazi regime was involved in so many atrocities that any negotiations were impossible.
