Service Network Manager Rob Magargal explains the step by step process of how to properly restring your Taylor guitar.
That was smooth. This is the best string change tutorial I've seen yet.
Came here after that awful Fender instruction video. Thanks! This is exactly what I needed!
Haha!
Haha yea I left when he said two at a time...
had to go through 4 of the top videos before i found someone who actually said specifically how much slack to put on the strings instead of just "about this much." Also this is the only one that mentioned the treble strings needs more slack.
@@glennwilson19 same!
I always keep coming back to Rob because I always forget where to cut the strings!
Instead you can just unwind the strings all the way & they'll pop off the posts.
Well it's easier now.
Well I always measure up to the
A string and a hair
I’m so glad I watch this. It is so smart and practical. I have been changing guitar strings for 50 years and had no idea how I have been consistently botching it. Thank you Taylor!
YOU. JUST. CHANGED. MY. LIFE!!! No joke!
Rob, thank you for this video. I have an older Taylor, had never restrung a guitar, and went to countless other videos. Yours was by far the best and got me through it. Clear instructions I’m excited to play. Thanks a million!
Best video I have ever seen for changing strings, I was able to follow and change my strings on my Taylor mini no problem and I am a beginner, thanks a million!!!
Thanks for the thorough instructions; very easy to follow.
I have been stringing my guitars for decades before I saw this for the first time about 5 years ago now. This method is so good and the strings stay in tune so much better, Rob knows.
This vid is also about much more than tuning, with great info on how to maintain and preserve your equipment. Thanks for paying it forward.
Rob has the best video out there, changing strings. So easy. All the others were so confusing. I had a little trouble with the pins coming up ? I have a Taylor 512..light strings. Thank You Rob for a great job !!!!
Perfect instructional video, took me about an hour of rewinding the vid & rewatching while restringing to make sure I didn't miss anything. Guitar now sounds crisp as anything, gave the old girl a new lease of life. Thank you.
This guy is an absolute MASTER of his craft. Wow! What a good video! Like many, I've watched hundreds of "how-to" videos on UA-cam. This is a "Top Two Percent" video. Smart, insightful information. Good directions. Good visuals. Good SOUND! (So many videos have crappy sound.) I love the "stretching technique" he demonstrated - - I've never done it that way, but I WILL do it that way from now on. Congratulations, Rob (and Taylor) for a fabulous video!
Came across this going down a rabbit hole of boredom. Got some strings yesterday and followed the steps. Took me 10 minutes and the new strings are perfectly in tune. Great video and I’ll be doing it just like this from now on
You are a brilliant teacher Rob Magargal. Taylor is lucky to have you
Wow, found out I've been using the same measurement for string replacement for 30 years! Great video from Taylor as always!
This tutorial helped me tremendously , I have a Taylor acoustic and would have struggled without this video, I folwed it to the letter, tightening the post nuts etc, also using Elixer strings, it now rings like a bell. Thank You.
This is the the best tutorial available on string replacement. Now my guitars are easier to tune and stay in tune longer. Thank you!
I bought my 314ce in 2008, it's still a beauty of a wonder to this day.
I knew this would be the best video on youtube, regarding re-stringing. My dude in the thumbnail, I knew he'd be matter-of-fact, and getting to the point. This is legendary content. No pandering, no rambling- just Taylor brilliance.
Masterfully done. Thank you. What I learned from this video (that seemed to be missing from others on the same topic); (1) giving the highest 3 strings a little extra slack to avoid future breakage (3 wraps around the post); and (2) the manual stretch by hand - Brilliant. Thank you so very much. A great video for sure.
This video made my first, and subsequent string changes easy, thank you! I popped a string was my first "change" so I only had the new strings and a wire cutter and was able to do it with just that, and the following week same thing happened, and again no issue with the limited tools. Thanks again for such a great tutorial!
After watching this video I think it's the best acoustic restring I've ever seen! I do it this way from now on, thank you.
Am I the only one that has never seen a tuning fork used to tune a guitar? That was sorcery.
I still have my A tuning fork. Extremely old school.
old school and some people who work with music all the time and have perfect pitch just can hear the intonation. I have a friend who is an experienced professional Jazz and R & B bassist. He visited my house and asked me how my banjos were tuned, and I started to explain to him, and he said no just play it, and then told me exactly how each banjo (I had several with old time modal tunings) was tuned and which ones were off
Pretty standard way of tuning by resonant vibration that used to be standard for professional musicians and music techs and can be extremely true. If you are tuning guitars all day and repairing guitars to get the right intonation all day for decades, you develop something like perfect pitch for whether a guitar is in tune. The inexpensive electronic tuners are a gift from Heaven before what we used to put up with with pitch pipes and all that crap--try tuning an autoharp with a pitch pipe lol--but they have ruined our ears and brains for ear tuning
Sorcery! Good one!😂
I've been playing for over 50 years and have never bought a tuner. I thank God for giving me a good ear. I love the guys on UA-cam giving demos with a guitar out of tune. That is sorcery.
Best video I've seen for changing strings and the easiest way. Also very precise explanation This guy rocks
Ive been playing for over 25 years and I found this useful - thanks!
I’ve seen many different processes of putting the strings on. This is the best method. I like how you did the different types of guitars.
Agree with many below...smoothest vid I've seen on this, even a decade on...thanks Taylor!
This tutorial is very useful not only for Taylor guitar but also other guitars :). Thank you, Rob !
Easiest way to restring the guitar without the need of a knot or winding the string with hand etc. Thank you Sir ! Professional method and clear easy way of explanation+demonstration.
This is Great. I recently purchased a 414ce-R ( love it ) and I'm wearing the strings-out, from Playing so much. Thanks for this informative video.
awesome Rob. Thank you. I would not have had the confidence to do this without your help. Bravo
Helpful video, I'm going to try this method out, since I prefer it from a standpoint of being easier to follow than some other guides I've seen. Thanks!
Best string changing video out there, thank you Rob!
Thank you Rob. Excellent Instructions. By far the easiest, most effective way to change strings I have ever tried. Just restrung my Taylor 410 with the new recommended D'Addario XS strings. Tuned right up and sounds amazing.
A very helpful video. I've had 12 strings for many years, and always had issues re-stringing (the top G). Having changed my stringing technique, I've avoided lots of problems. I really enjoy my Taylor 150e.
Thanks Rob. Much appreciate the clear tutorial!!
GREAT HOW TO VIDEO!!! beginner here and you made it EASY for my 1st string change! THANKS
Thank you so much. Since finding this video 3 (+ -) years ago I can't tell you how many times I have came back to it for a refresher before I change the strings on my slot head.
Thanks very much for this video! I think the Taylor-suggested approach here is excellent, especially measuring and cutting off the string ends prior to winding. I have a 712, and figured who better than Rob at Taylor to show me how to restring! Rob knows what he's doing!
thanks Taylor and the person doing this demo.. really helps for someone who never have done this before
This video helped so much huge thanks to rob for doing this video, very informative
This man is a pure Wizard !!! The tuning fork skill is so superb :)
@wirthwhilemusic hi, the tool we use is a standard B&D with a mod to increase the RPMs without increasing the torque. Hitachi makes a consumer model as does Ernie Ball.
Taylor Guitars I'M VERY SORRY FOR BREAKING YOUR GUITAR, LAURIE BERKNER!
This is the best string changing tutorial ever! I struggled with it every time.. I don’t know why I couldn’t get it..The tip about cutting the string first was the biggest help for me. I wouldn’t do it any other way now. Thank you!
Thank you! I just bought a Taylor 314 CE and your video was just what I was looking for. Great lesson.
Great video and terrific instructions by Rob. Keep in mind we are restringing so you may want to clean your neck and frets a bit.
Use commercially available products for the neck cleaning and use some extra fine steel wool to clean your frets. With the strings off, its a good time to clean the neck, frets, and guitar in general.
Thanks Jeff, easy to follow and to the point. Nice tip regarding cutting the string pre wind on, and saves a lot of hassle I find. Came back here for the instruction after many years since last visit Great job
I've been playing Guitar for years, and thought I knew how to change strings........ up to watching this.....
Thank you Taylor Guitars
Nicley done thankyou taylor guitars
😃
i have a new taylor gs mini. i think you were the dude who worked on mine. shipped and received strings in perfection!!
Great video! My go to for a refresher and everything always goes smoothly.
Best instruction video I ever saw on restringing - thanks!
Thank you so much. I have a 12 string and it is also slotted. This video was so comprehensive it addressed all issues.
Superb! An excellent approach that was very clearly explained - worked really well for me. Thank you 😊!
best video I've found that gives me the level of detail that helps me do it right -- thank you
Thank you Mr. Rob, i have been playing since the early 70s. I never installed a cleaner set of strings until I watched this video. That's why you make the bucks!!
Just changed the strings on my 110E for the first time. Thanks for this video. It was very easy to change them compared to other acoustic brands I owned.
Truly an amazing video, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
Best video on string changing! Like all pros you make it look easy. Thanks for the tutorial!
Great informative video - finally, all of the elements of where to cut the strings along with good time saving tips - thanks Rob.
Best tutorial so far in this aspect.
This guy is a master at his craft
Thanks for sharing Rob Ive always come back for this to refresh my memory of doing this to my Taylor 🤗
Awsome tutorial! Just what I needed to understand my mistakes, thank you!
The absolute best video. I have never been able to restring my guitar. After watching this I did it so quickly I was totally amazed the best part was about cutting the string first. I’m so excited now. Thanks for a great video
Glad it helped!
Thank you! Easy to understand and good tips. Did it myself for the first time👍🏼
My go to string change tutorial! Just changed the strings on my Taylor Academy 12e. It looks great with this technique!
I always come back to this video whenever I'm changing my strings on the acoustic guitar 👍🏽
This is a great video. I show it to my high school guitar classes every year.
Every time I change strings on my Taylor I come here. Nicely done and the method works like a charm
Great tutorial. I have just bought a Taylor Koa GS Ltd Edition from 2011 and it came with Elixir strings 12 gauge. So I decided to restring my guitar with Newton strings gauge 11, (in order to decrease tension on the bendings)
Thank You Rob, Great Job and Very Informative.
Highly informative! Thank you for the suggestions and the vid.
I never comment!....but you deserve it Rob! you are awesome. THANKS and well done!
Thank you for this tutorial, especially I learned about stretching the strings, i'll do this from now on.
The man has a magical ear to tune (perfectly) by a tuning fork!
Thank you Rob! I don’t always change my own Taylor guitar strings, but when I do, it’s with YOUR video running for moral support!!!
Really easy instructions to follow. Thanks!
That was a magical way to determine string length to trim them. Thanks!
Thanks to Rob, I've done my first string change problem free!
Great video, especially loked yhe string stretching segment, very helpful
I was a nervous wreck at the thought of changing strings on my new 2015 Taylor 914ce. This video was amazing! I followed it to the tee step-by-step and it came out amazing. When the strings were all off, I polished the whole guitar and oiled the fretboard with Taylor polish and fret board conditioner. I went down one gauge to 10's and it plays much easier with no buzzing. Thanks, Rob!!!
+Ray Blanks what strings did you have and what do you have now?
Taylors at the 800 and 900 level usually come with Elixir HD lights, which are light on the treble (unwound) strings and medium on the bass (wound) strings. That way you get plenty of low midrange and easy bending on the upper midrange.
I just broke my D string tuning to open E lastnight. Im always nervous when changing strings especially after only having my new ibanez talman electric/accoustic a week then breaking a string haha. I bought a string winder lastnight so hopefully i can do this when my new strings i ordered arrive soon. I got a 9-45 gauge pack cause i dont like the thickness of the ones that came with it
That was the best I have ever seen....! Very good.
Works perfect! Thanks for the great video instructions
Thanks for the help. Just getting back into playing after a 10 year hiatus and those strings are very old. Using my favorite Elixir Acoustic Guitar strings light/ for my Taylor 614-CE. Love the sound of new strings on a Taylor Guitar!
I've strung my guitars like this ever since I saw it first in 2012. It works flawlessly (never slips or pops out of tune, never breaks a string) and couldn't be more simple. I get a kick out of the posts by people who comment here that they do it differently without saying A) why or B) why I should think they know better than a Taylor technician!
Thanks so much. I will be doing this for the first time ever, on a copy Strat. I see you went down the head for the thinner strings, and not both above and below as some vids say. Your method of going down seems easier 😊
Wow, that was very thorough. Kudos.
Fantastic demo! Thanks a lot Rob! Feel confident about re-stringing my Taylor guitar now! Phew. :)
This is a master guitar tech at work. Thanks so much for this 👍
really appreciated the clipping before winding and string stretching tips. Job done.
I just got the Koa GS Mini-I traded a bunch of old gear for it. I even got 80.00 back!
My 90's Epiphone was in the pile. This new GS mini is WAY easier to play and a lot more interesting to look at.
It's action is almost as low as my 84-87 US-made Strat.
Fretboard and neck are like butter.
Also like they do their best to replace the trees used. I felt guilty as hell about that.
The store had this lovely beast front and center because the GS mini koa is SO gorgeous.
I bought/traded for it right away.
And I'm normally a singer/drummer!
GREAT job on this, guys. REALLY makes you want to play it constantly.
The tonality is also pretty stunning.
Mesmerizing work! Great luthier
This is absolutely the best guitar stringing method. All the people that wrap their strings around the top do not know what they are doing.
Got to try this on my Taylor.
Thanks for a great tutorial. 👍👍👍
Great vid. I've been playing for 30 years and I still learned something. AND, I want one of those tool bits on that Black and Decker.
been playing for 59 years and I learned something in this
Great video, thanks for the great tips, very helpful
Really well explained, cheers.
Thanks Rob. I always come back here to restring.
Thanks for this tutorial it is very helpful
Best tutorial on this I've seen.
Really enjoyed this video, hope you have a lovely 2022@stay safe debs
