Things I Used in This Project:
    Tiller: goo.gl/8NRWLa
    Mini Steer Skid: goo.gl/38Cgrt
    Landscaping Fabric: goo.gl/y9dbT7
    Compactor: goo.gl/5Vu0gK
    Pavers
    Light Bricks: goo.gl/zktzKq
    Dark Bricks: goo.gl/7jVii4
    Rectangles: goo.gl/rbhXi8
    Squares: goo.gl/Pc9TiA
    Caulk Line: goo.gl/91L22I
    Circular Saw: goo.gl/WtD1dn
    Diamond Tip Blade: goo.gl/gKhFQC
    Right Angle Grinder: goo.gl/klO5i7
    Diamond Tip Wheel: goo.gl/9Z7kpd
    Face Shield: goo.gl/wWJ8Nu
    Dust Mask: goo.gl/En2zWd
    Hearing Protection: goo.gl/BXfILT
    Edging: goo.gl/8oz2RF
For anybody local to the Fort Worth area, I purchased the sand as well as the gravel from: goo.gl/pz71PC
If you are not doing as large of an area then both of these materials can be purchased at The Home Depot in the gardening section.
In this video I tackle how to build a paver seating area for the fire pit as well as two paver walkways. When combined it turned out to be a huge area that needed paving, close to 400 sqft. In the video I explain how I dig up the ground and remove all the dirt in the area. How to treat the area to cut down on the amount of grass/weeds growing in the future. How to add and compact the base material which consist of crushed stone and sand. Then how to lay down pavers to make the actual seating area. I also explain how to cut pavers using two different methods. For more details check out my website.

So, so impressed. One reason being is I worked for the company that manufactured these pavers. I was a mechanic at a plant in Dixon California and can attest to the quailty of our work. April, you went above and beyond the requirements for the installations process. My hat is off to you for a job very well done.

I've seen those little skid steer things before, but I've never really thought about getting one for myself till I saw the look of pure joy and happiness on April's face. Clearly buying one for myself would be a sound and sensible investment... Maybe.

    Great job April!
    Little Pro tip:
Shoveling that gravel into the wheelbarrow is much easier when you harvest gravity. You make a pit on the bed of the truck. Then you stand in it. You take the shovel Cody is using, and you paddle the gravel in the w/b. Much easier than having to hold the weight of the gravel. Later on as it gets emptier, you use the shovel like a push broom.

You did a great job. I was a brick paver installer for 10 years. I have 2 suggestions, first around the outside edge I would dig about 3-4" bellow the brick and pour some concrete to hold the bricks, put enough concrete to bring it up near the top of the bricks, just leave enough room to cover it with the grass. Secondly at the end after you ran the compactor on top of the bricks with the sand we would use water to wash up the bricks and sweep the sand with water running, it helps to fill in the gaps much easier and faster. Great job otherwise. :)

    • @300ZCorradoVR6Z
      @300ZCorradoVR6Z 7 років тому +1

You don't have to put too much sand, just enough to cover the bricks with an even layer to avoid any damage or scratches to the bricks while running the compactor.

Years back I made a brick pathway in one of my gardens. This project sort of reminded me of that. It's a lot more work than this video lets on, but the fruits of your labor look amazing! I used re-purposed bricks from yards that sold materials from demolished buildings. They had an old-world look and were a lot cheaper than what I'd find at one of the big stores.

I use polymeric sand instead of regular brick sand. You follow sand process to fill the cracks using the tamper and brooms, then you must sweep off all of the extra sand and even gently blow off the any excess material. Then lightly soak the sand to activate the glue. This product will almost guarantee no weeds and no ants.
It does look awesome though. Great job April.

When cutting bricks or pavers with an angle grinder, you don't have to cut both sides. As long as your top cut is more than half-way through the paver, especially at the ends of the cut, you can knock off the waste with a chipping hammer. You hold the cut paver in one hand (holding the keeper part) and smack the waste part with the hammer. You usually have to do a little cleanup with the chisel side of the hammer.
The final piece will have a rough, broken-away void on the bottom of the paver, but you can't see this when the edge is installed; it just takes a little more sand to fill in the edges. I did dozens of patios this way, but I would always use brick in mortar edge. I wouldn't use it if the cut edge is right against a plastic edging system, but the way you had a course of full bricks in between the cut pavers and the edging would probably be ok.

Looks great April. Love your stuff. Two small tips that I did not see you do is use a polymeric sand that will "glue" the joints shut as opposed to just filling them with sand in the end. Then run the compactor on the pavers after filling the joints with a carpet underneath the compactor to help vibrate the cracks full of the sand between the pavers.

    • @turdsandwicher
      @turdsandwicher 7 років тому

looks okay would have been a lot better if you set your Edge paver stones in concrete. And at the end when you apply the sand between the pavers was that polymeric sand? Any other Sand is not the proper sand it will wash out and cause the pavers to move. polymeric sand goes between the pavers when you activate with water it hardens like a grout locks everything in and secures the pavers maybe should have mentioned that in your video. but still looks okay for someone who doesn't do pavers for a living still awesome video keep up the good work.

What about disposal of the material you removed? Where'd that go? The last project I did ended up in a good 3-4 tons of dirt and it sat for months slowly giving some away as fill dirt on craigslist (since I don't have a truck or trailer, and didn't want to spend the money on rentals). So I'm curious what you did with that and what costs were associated with it.

awesome job April, i don't know how bad weeds are in your area, but in the next few years you might want to look into JOINT-LOCK SAND, i use it every few years after blowing out the weeds with the powerwasher. i usually get about 4 years of no weeds. JOINT-LOCK SAND is a Polymeric Sand, once you have it tapped into the cracks you have to make sure the top of the pavers have none on it as once you activate with water it hardens. oh and Cody did a great job helping....lol. see you next year.

Last time I borrowed a front end loader from a friend for chores, I got out of control. At my house, that pool would have disappeared. I know I've seen me do it. :) It was beyond repair. I have a larger seating area now. Some really good tips in this video as well.

Its a little late now but if in the future you ever do this again I would recommend a Polymer type sand. It has a glue type of polymer that over time sets up so you would never have to re-sand the area and it locks the blocks into place alot better than normal sand.

Dang you're good! My dad sent me a few of your videos, he lovesvhiw simple you make things look. I love you're explanations and play by play, this is great motivation for My wife because we're getting a few acres here in Texas and my dad and I are very good with ideas and building/fixing things but it's hard convincing my wife the ease and time of a particular project. Your videos will really help her to c what I've been saying. God is good cuz we just had a debate about me not helping her to c what I c, now I've got u to help me show her. I'm a subscriber now, keep them instructional videos coming!

As a educated landscaper from Denmark it is fun to see the difference between how we would tackle such a job, and how you Americans do it.. Came out pretty good tho 👍

Hey April! Merry Christmas to you and your family! Good job! It is really interesting to see the different techniques in paving in the US. I am from Germany and have done a fair amount of paving professionally. Especially the edging of the pavers is something I havent seen done like this before. We use concrete for it. Also the use of the weed fabric underneath the compacted gravel is new to me. I dont think it will stop roots from large trees and weeds wont come from underneath but will grow in the spaces between the pavers and that only after a few years. If you want to prevent weeds you need a special filler which hardens after you broom it in with water.

    Good job.
It's so much more lovelier than just a concrete patio. It looks like lots of work. Now you need some flower and trees. 🌲🌲🏡🌲🌲😁

I wish I'd seen your instagram, April. I'd have told you about polymeric sand for your top layer. It's just sand, but it's got a polymer agent in it that acts as a binder, and keeps it from washing out, or getting ant burrows in it and stuff. Not sure of the price difference, but it's fantastic stuff.

For your next project. You could add a raised bed planter against the one building to help connect the new pavers with the surroundings.

Idea - embedded outdoor rated led lights into the pavers to mark the boundaries and or paths. I think I've seen them for decks and docks. But a DIY method might be to drill a hole, put in the led, fill in the hole with resin or hot glue. Hmm I might try out a prototype.
