Looking back, he was just standing up for the Muppets, standing up for what's right. The characterisation was changing a lot, they were too sweet, they're meant to be rebellious, like Frank Oz once said.

For an entire generation, he WAS Kermit!! From all interactions Ive seen and heard about, Steve has been nothing but friendly and kind and its incredibly obvious in every interview he has ever given, that the Jim Henson Company and all the Muppets are SO IMPORTANT to him. Its very, very sad. I miss Steve as Kermit, and Im not alone.

Because I'm sure it wasn't easy to find somebody to take over before Matt Vogel got picked. I'm sure most of the other performers would've felt uncomfortable with taking over such an iconic character. Heck, Dave Goelz (A.K.A. Gonzo) only took over Waldorf from Jim Henson because he did the voice for Muppetvision and they couldn't find anyone else.

    • @wellesradio

Al Connolly Steve was a jerk. The reason they kept him so long is because he wasn’t always difficult, but over the years he became a monster behind the scenes and had them over a barrel, threatening not to cooperate. Handling any muppet character is a job that requires training under the current performer. You have to work with them to copy their voice, mannerisms, and handling of the puppet. All other muppet puppeteers have assistants and understudies, if for no other reason than there are a lot of gigs that they need to attend and can’t always make so they need someone to substitute for them and hopefully take over for them if something happens to them (illness, death, retirement). Steve refused to let anyone watch him too closely and would try to get young puppeteers fired if he felt they were a threat to his job or even just possible competition. And then he would refuse to do some jobs just to make his bosses feel like they couldn’t do anything unless he agreed to it since they had no one else to fall back on.

Another example of a corporation not understanding the intellectual property they bought and forgetting that it is actually a work of meaningful art and that the artists and their integrity are central to the work.
Disney lacks respect for the artwork. Just like with their purposeful butchery of Star Wars. Disney seem driven to try and ruin childhoods and hurt their audience. Its gotten to be that one has to be a masochist to even watch Disney productions anymore.

The fact that they keep saying “voiced Kermit” and “the voice of Kermit” is pretty telling. The performers were never just voice artists.
And if you go back decades, Kermit was ALWAYS more prickly during talk show appearances. I can remember him scolding Johnny Carson for asking personal questions!
I’m really surprised at Cheryl and Brian; less so with the bureaucracy.

I used to watch Kermit as a kid. He was usually dry, depressed, wicked and kind, depending on the scenario. I've seeing some of the performances from Jim Henson introducing Kermit. One of which was on the Johnny Carson show. Kermit was a bitter frog even then. Steve kept the character going the same way as Jim did, in my opinion. Disney may not have liked the person behind Kermit, but they were wrong to just fire him.
    "Shame on Disney." 😡

What the Henson kids fail to tell everyone (aside from the rest of the truth), is that Jim was a mentor to Steve - for years - and before he died, Jim wanted Steve to take over as Kermit, so much so that Brian Henson was the one who asked him specifically to take over Kermit for his father. And even then, he couldn't bring himself to look at Kermit for a month before deciding.
Disney claims he was a diva, fine. What other "Divas" have been able to push Disney around during the 90s? Or since? And, as such, what "Diva" ever open-endedly offers to do whatever at the company's behest just to come back?
As much as I love Disney, they are Shug Knight. But worse.
*No disrespect to Matt Vogel or any of the other Disney Muppet Performers, they're all wonderful and none of this is on them.*

Well it’s been four years and so far what Steve Whitmire has done since getting the boot from Disney is create a UA-cam series that has yet to even reach 1000 subscribers, so still waiting on that “something greater than what he did under Disney.”
Yeah, no I’m sorry but his career is just dead. Puppetry isn’t exactly a profitable or in demand talent these days and I don’t see how any puppeteer can move on to “bigger things” after performing the most well known Muppet in Kermit. You can’t get much better as a puppeteer than performing with the Muppets in million dollar movies, tv shows and commercials and to go from that to a UA-cam series that isn’t even quite good enough for UA-cam to try to make ad revenue from, yeah oh how the mighty have fallen.

Shameful of Disney to fire the voice of Kermit. Disney should give a closer listen to "Its not easy being green". Kermit had a range of emotions and sometimes he was sad and depressed, because this is the range of emotion we all face in life. Kermit was a meaningful character because he faced sadness and depression, but always found a way through it.
Like usual Disney does not understand the character or franchise they purchased. Kermit is more than a franchise or asset. Kermit is a work of art a deeply developed character and the artist that portraits him, is very important.

I don't buy Disney and the Hensons' thoughts that Whitmire made Kermit bitter. There was always an edge to Jim's original Kermit (even Frank Oz has said The Muppets had an edge to them and that's what made them special). He was lovable, he was was innocent, but he was also a "person" to Jim who had varying degrees of emotion... just like Jim (Kermit was his alter ego). If you watch The Muppet Show from the 70's, Kermit could get flabbergasted and cross and even angry at the mayhem surrounding his show. That was Kermit, that was Jim. A little bit of everything.

At 2:00 I can see of what Steve Whitmire is trying to tell Brian Henson and the rest of the Jim Henson company, and probably Disney producers as well.
I really believe what Steve Whitmire wanted to do was to keep the character of Kermit the Frog alive and forever, I also believe that he probably heard voices in his head from Jim Henson. Because Jim Henson used to go on a lot of interviews and everything else on TV, and he would make sure that Kermit is there. Because he knows that the people would want to talk to the main character of The Muppets.
And when Steve said because the Muppets are Kermit, that got me a little confused right there but I do believe he means Kermit is the main character of The Muppets. And that he believes that people want to see and talk to Kermit, if Steve Whitmire can make it to a TV show and to have the host of the show or someone in the show to interview and talk to Kermit only. Because Jim Henson used to do that himself, and he would always make sure that Kermit is there, because Kermit is the symbol of all of The Muppets. Just like Mickey Mouse is the symbol of the Walt Disney Company and all Disney characters.
I believe every since Jim Henson's death from 1990, everybody really wanted to see and talk to Jim Henson, as well as Kermit the Frog. But because Jim Henson is gone and everyone in our country, Hollywood, Toronto Canada and others around the world can't talk to him anymore, what they like to do instead is talk to Kermit. And of course Kermit will always be their favorite character of The Muppets, and I really believe that Steve Whitmire wanted to capture that spirit and do it just for Jim Henson and even making people happy to interview and talk to Kermit. I really do believe that Steve Whitmire wanted to have that magic to be captured by everyone.
And who knows I think Steve Whitmire wanted to be like Jim Henson and Frank Oz, and other words not just as a puppeteer and a performer. But to move along as like a producer, writer and director, just like how Jim Henson did it as well as his best friend and partner Frank Oz. I mean first of all, when Jim Henson did Labyrinth, he had Frank Oz to be the co-producer and co-director, and then when the idea of the third Muppet movie Muppets Take Manhattan came along. Jim Henson actually had Frank Oz to write the script and also Direct the movie, now I could see that Jim Henson was executive producer and probably co-director of Muppets Take Manhattan, but anyway Frank Oz wrote it, he produced it and directed it. And I forgot to mention, Jim Hansen also had Frank Oz to produce Muppets Take Manhattan as well.
I just wish the Jim Henson company and including Disney could have had and gave the chance for Steve Whitmire himself to be a writer, producer and even a director for a Muppet movie or even a Sesame Street movie. and because Disney and the Henson family had to accuse Steve Whitmire with public demands and other crappy stuff that they're trying to accuse Whitmire with, to me it sounds like allegations or false allegations. and because they had to fire Steve Whitmire, for the Jim Henson company and Disney to do that to him, they would have to realize it would never be the same without Steve Whitmire to keep Kermit the Frog alive, and worst of all the popularity of the Muppets might go downhill without Whitmire's involvement and talents.
Because if they could have had Whitmire to write, produce and direct a new project for the Muppets or even Sesame Street. a project that could have been a movie for one of those two franchises, and if it were to bomb and not work well with the public. Then the Jim Henson company and Disney could have removed Steve Whitmire from there.
So I can see why the popularity of the Muppets is not that perfect anymore and going downhill, because Steve Whitmire is not there. And he could have got the chance to be a writer, producer and director, just like Frank Oz and the original Jim Henson. And just to let you know Frank Oz does not like of what Disney is doing with the Muppets right now.
Because the ABC Muppets sitcom lasted for only one season and didn't work at all, and there was supposed to be a new muppet show with Josh Gad the voice of Olaf from Frozen for Disney Plus. But then for some reason Disney decided to cancel the project, which made me very upset, because I wanted to see the Muppets and Josh Gad together.
So I can see why Frank Oz does not like Disney of how they're treating The Muppets nowadays, and I'm sure that Oz felt sorry for Steve Whitmire's firing, and I do believe two of the guys talk to each other about the Muppets and the good old days of Jim Henson. And I do believe that the two of them are good friends for nowadays.
And if the Muppets are going to get back on track, Disney needs to stop canceling any possible Muppets projects. And to let someone who was there from the start, and as one of the original puppeteers to be an executive producer, writer and director to take care of the property and the franchise, to let the popularity of the Muppets to rise up again. And I hope that Steve Whitmire and Frank Oz can work together as a team, and demand Disney Executives that they need to save the popularity of The Muppets and rise up the popularity again. So they can do it just for Jim Henson, and to really have the Muppets to live on and forever.
Because right now, not only the Jim Henson company wanted to have Steve Whitmire out of the picture. But I can really tell it was Disney Executives and Bob Iger himself to have him to be fired, so he would never work with the Muppets ever again. I truly believe it was Bob Iger's idea, because secretly he made a few things to tear apart the Disney Company, like firing Disney theme park cast members and some from the resort hotels. And he even had John Lasseter to be out of Disney, which I really don't believe in the sexual allegations that they were accusing him with, because John Lasseter has a wife and a really big happy family. Because Lassiter knows that if he were to do something inappropriate, the same thing like Bill Cosby did, John Lasseter would know that he would be in serious trouble that he would not have the power to keep it a secret. And I know that he knows it's wrong and an act of crime, that he knows that his family would be really upset with him, and it might lead to a big divorce with his wife.
So all of the allegations that was said about John Lasseter, I really don't believe it's true. I believe it's just a bunch of crappy lies, and that Bob Iger had some henchmen to get John Lasseter in trouble with nothing but lies, and that he would hope that Lassiter would be fired. Sorry people but John Lasseter is my inspiration and will always be one of my favorite geniuses, and his sexual allegations I find them to be horrible false and nightmarish lies.
Nowadays I fine Bob Iger as too powerful, selfish and coming up with brilliant schemes to make money all for himself. I really don't like the looks of that man, he is the Disney version of Donald Trump and you know that Trump is our president, but anyway Bob Iger is when I view the secret and real Disney villain.
There was a lot of good things that I've appreciated, like Star Wars and Marvel as part of the Disney dialogue, there have been a few mishaps of the world of Star Wars. But I don't care I'm a huge hardcore Star Wars fan, but with new ideas that mr. Iger gives the green light for, I see that the fans of that property and franchise will go totally nuts, because sometimes the idea can replace an old favorite. Which gets things out of control and way too far and I found out the SEC or SCA, is planning an investigation for the Disney Company, and I can tell who they're going to investigate I believe it will be none other than Bob Iger. And I really want mr. Iger out of Disney right away, because he has kept some dark secrets, because he has kept some dark secrets, because he has kept some dark secrets, because he has kept some, because he has kept some selfish secrets behind everybody's backs. Firing some good people who really believe in the magic of Disney as a true family-friendly environment, and taking things too far to replace a beloved fan favorite attraction, and who knows he probably was stealing money as well.
Whatever Bob Iger is up to, I really hope he gets terminated as CEO and kicked out of Disney right away. Bob Iger is now making me really sick, he is a liar and a secret real Disney villain

He did not create Kermit, Jim Henson did and sadly he is no longer with us. Since 2004, Disney, again not Whitmire, has gained ownership of the Muppets. Meaning they own the character and Whitmire was essentially telling the owners of the Muppets he knows the Muppets better. Jim loved Steve, taught him everything he knew and Steve put his heart into these characters for Jim's own flesh to treat him like this? The man did the voice for 27 years, just to be tossed aside. Don't get me wrong, no hate to Matt Vogel, he's put a new spin on the voice and made the character his own, but Steve's Kermit was special and nothing will come as close to Jim's.
Diva? Hardly anymore than the typical celeb. He had no understudy, Matt's gone in blind because he hasn't got to learn from the person currently playing the character. At least with Big Bird he got to apprentice first!

Disney is like the early days of MGM, aka "The Dream Factory". You must fit in the MGM mold or else you'll be fired and replaced, and if you are a mega star, you could be blacklisted and never work in Hollywood again. So many previously-excellent careers that moved to MGM suffocated and died due to MGM not knowing how to write scripts that showcased unique talent.
Jim's message of friendship, love, acceptance and understanding would not carry over well with Disney mold I'm sure, they'd write it off as fluff. The Disney Machine writes the scripts and sets the tone for Kermits character, not Steve. They wonder why he's so difficult? He sees them destroying Jim's character. Piggy and Kermit yelling spiteful garbage and hating each other. Friendships barely visible. The Muppets are such a hollow shell of their former selves that you could fill in any of their roles with any person or puppet and it'd make no difference.

    Romans 3:23
    For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
    Hebrews 9:27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
    Isaiah 64:6
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
    Revelation 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
    Romans 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
    John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
    John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
    Romans 10:9-10.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
    John 5:24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
    1John 5: 10-13
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
    Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
    Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    1 Corinthians 15:3-4
    For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
    2 Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
