The character archetype that I like are characters that have long range sword normals that do a lot of damage, like Percival from Granblue Fantasy Versus, Nagoriyuki from Guilty Gear Strive, and Ike from Smash Ultimate. If a game has that type of character then I am playing it.

When I picked up strive it was my first fighting game besides smash. I picked Potemkin because he killed 3 birds with one stone for me.
    1) I play fat characters already (incineroar, bowser, DK) so the choice was a bit obvious
    2) I could not understand movement, every character felt clunky as fuck to move around the stage so might as well pick the one who doesnt have any movement options to worry about. It took until Goldlewis came out to get me to try a character that could run and airdash, and at that point i had a solid understanding of how the game worked, so I could add those new tools to my kit comfortably. That dash macro literally saves my life though.
    3) i didnt block. Holding backwards to block has probably been THE thing keeping me from traditional fighting games (no i do not want to play mortal kombat fuck mortal kombat) but having to charge hammerfall all the time literally taught me to block.
Also getting stupid damage from like 3 hits helped lmao

Well, I’m going to use this video’s comment section to write all my past mains just for fun
Started with Kyo, Terry and Yuri in KoF (Kyo and Terry because they were cool and simple to play and Yuri ‘cause waifu)
I think I’ve played Ken in every street fighter game since Third Strike, because he was simple and i’ve always played casually until strive came out.
Then I played Noob Saibot in MK although i didn’t end up playing the game too much.
I played Rise in P4U because waifu.
Then I started playing Xrd with Ky and also started playing Strive with him and now I’m a Ram main :)
I finally took fighting games more seriously and somehow i ended up celestial in Europe and placed pretty high in some tournaments

Another way of picking characters is figuring out what you DONT like in the game. Whether this be specific character tools, mechanics, etc. Then you pick the characters that fight these the best.
For example, if you hate getting wakeup DP’d, then play characters that have strong setplay/safejumps/etc like Ino.
The game is sometimes more enjoyable when you can deal with the aspects of it that you dislike better.

I think back on all the characters I ever picked in fighting games. Usually comes between two things. Most predominately, its either pretty/cute girls or cool characters. As a kid I remember picking Jin Kazama and Hwoarang back in Tekken Tag Tournament. Then I don't know what happened, started playing Xiaoyu and started liking girls more. Then Smash 4 came out and I played Marth all through Melee and Brawl and then I saw Lucina and how she played exactly like Marth. Fell in love with game play and design. Then I think in 2016 I saw evo for GG. I saw a Millia Rage in top 8 for Xrd and I fell in love with both her design and game play. Her combos were so cool and her oki bullshit was so entertaining. On top of being absolutely pretty. I knew then I wanted to play her and I had no fucking idea of Guilty Gear. Soon after, didn't have enough money for good computer but saw that plus R was a thing and Millia was there. Started playing Plus R Millia and eventually got Xrd and enjoyed my time quite well.

I must admit my eyebrows rose a bit when the admission of "horny picking" came given that both Sol and Kokonoe were mentioned just beforehand. But then you implied Leo wasn't cool and I was reminded you also played both Mitsuru and Margaret and all was forgiven (despite them both also oppressing people at times).
As for myself, after all these years, I'm still not really sure to be honest, in part because I have never been that competitive. I was initially going to say "zoning characters", but I've never really been interested in Dhalsim or Guile or Axl Low, probably wouldn't play Menat if _SFV_ is something I ever play, and _KOF_ generally doesn't have that archetype outside of Orochi Shermie, who absolutely sucks at it due to the series' mechanics, and like the few times Athena and Billy Kane were top tier. I have also played far more grapplers despite generally not caring for big bodies, which is funny given that Goldlewis looks fun to me despite his obvious current issues, not that he's a grappler; Goldlewis *not* being a grappler is in fact part of why I find him interesting.
I think the most accurate thing I can say about myself is that I gravitate towards the mechanically "quirkest" character first and then tend to work backwards from there to see whom I'm actually comfortable playing. I'll generally give any character in a fighting game a chance though unless even just their basic stuff would break my hands, like with C. Viper or El Fuerte, or I *absolutely* loathe their design, which rarely happens, especially after getting over my scrubby knee-jerk hatred of (most) top tier characters over a decade ago. I think that's part of my generally indecisive problem though. Shrug.

  • @lightmitian
    @lightmitian 3 роки тому

For me I pick characters who I like based on their aesthetics and what their personality is, and then I narrow it down to the ones whose gamenplan I can understand. It took me a while to understand this.
When I first started fighting games I played big body grapplers because I was inspired by grappler players I saw and wanted to play like them, I then branched out to normal guys because I felt like I was missing something in my understanding of fighting games by only playing one type of character. It wasn't until Granblue where I switched to Cagliostro from Gran and realized that I could play these sorts of technical characters that I started being more open to who I am comfortable playing.
This is what lead me to playing Milia now in Strive rather than playing sol like I did in Xrd. She looks great, I like the development her character has had in the story, I like how fast and free she is with her movement, and her goals were easy for me to understand. I could pick up the character and I knew the general idea of what I should do with her.

Im with you LK, I don't pick for playstyle. If I like the character I'll play it. Started with MK I picked Mileena and Sheeva, Soul Calibur I went with Nightmare/Astaroth and Cassandra. Now I play Giovanna and Goldlewis in Strive. I can't say I'm great at any archetype but if the character clicks with me I'll play it.

Eh I say try them all before really selecting, you might find something you unexpectedly like. That's how I ended up playing a bunch of Fiona in ah3 and turned match into a minigame for myself of "Can I get the 1-frame clean hit"...and when you do...oh man the damage. She plays nothing like what I typically like.

Also feel like difficultly of a character and willingness to put in time with that character also plays a part. First character i was drawn to was zato. But keeping track of eddie, his guage and my opponent proved to be to much for me. Moved on to millia which was still difficult but was able to push through.

I like characters with strong, unique and consistent setplay options. I really like Millia aesthetically so I originally played her in Strive. However; it seemed like she couldn’t keep her disk oki going after getting the hit. For example, if you break the wall, even with super, you don’t get disk oki and I wanted disc oki all the time lol.
I ended up switching to Leo and he is the most fun I’ve had with the game. Get back turned, end the combo in his gold pillar and it’s left, right, overhead low party time. I can choose what side to end combos on to avoid wall break and he still gets a meaty run through on wall breaking with super. So the mix continues.

I really like Strive, but there’s not a single character in the game that I really vibe with(play style wise/yes i’m taking it seriously). I really hope Baiken gets in SOON. I’m just cruising along with Gio and random characters rn because I at least like the game, but since I have no characters for me it’s preventing me from really bothering getting sweaty with the game.
    my fav fighting game characters:
Dragon Ball: Teen Gohan, Piccolo, Base Goku, Krillin, Base Vegeta,
    GG Xrd: Baiken
    Unist: Eltnum, Akatsuki, Orie
UMVC3: Iron Fist, Doom, C. Viper
    BBCF: Bang, Es, Hakumen
    Smash Ult: Kirby, Lucas
    Skullgirls: Valentine, Fukua
    SFV: Laura
    3rd Strike: Q, Makoto
    KOF 2002: Kula, Venessa
    Tekken: Kazuya, Lillie

That's easy one for me. Either the character is unapologetically weeby ie. Chipp or a Jojos reference ie. Zato and Axl.
On a more serious note, I like combo heavy Rushdown characters or Cool and complex Puppet characters.

@@anonymousnate678 Yeah, she’s great. I was just playing with her some recently. But I was thinking that if I was going to have a secondary, it shouldn’t be another rushdown. So now I’m looking at Ky and Axl for characters that play at different ranges.

Generally always pick either a rushdown/pressure or setplay/Oki character, but aesthetics have to match cause I’ll just drop the character if I don’t feel it. I think strive was rly tough for me because I’ve played Jam for years now and she not being included this time around really had me struggling. Started of with millia but got bored after the first month and now I’m on may for the time being 😅

Normally I don't have character issues for too long, typically I can either find someone who fits me ascetically and who I find fun enough to want to learn within a few hours at most, if I can't I tend to just drop the game cause it's no longer super fun. In Strive there isn't anyone I really like ascetically and even fewer characters I find fun so far but I really like a lot of the game's universal mechanics and I have friends who play it and the netcode certainly helps bring me back, so far I've just been playing Ram since she's the closest to somebody I like even though I find her very dry and praying a dlc character actually seems cool to me at some point.

I find it interesting that you’ve put aesthetics as #1. I would normally expect playstyle to be paramount for people who’ve grown to love a specific style, yet even for me who loves the playstyles of Ky, Chipp, and Anji, Ky is the only one I truly enjoy playing since I simply dislike the aesthetics of the others.
And Ky sucks right now compared to Chipp, lol

    Ggstrive: pot and Nagoriyuki

I usually horny pick, but it usually gets changed if they are high tier (at least while I am learning them) since I rather pick someone in the sort of mid tier. Not to boast or blame it on the character if I lose, just because I don't want to get carried by the character and actually learn the game. So, usually I just pick whatever looks great, initially started with Gio and Ramlethal as horny picks, but switched to Axl since he also looked pretty cool, most people seem to place him in the mid tier, and I fell in love with his intro.
Anyway, just play whatever makes you have fun and want to keep playing the game. If you are a tier whore that wants the top character, just do it and get them Ws if that's what lets you enjoy the game.
Good luck with the grind homies.

I tend to go by appearance first. I choose to play as characters that I think look sexy or cool.
After that I look into playstyle, preferring all rounder- Ky, and speed based characters- Chip and Gio.
I'm waiting for my girl Jam to get in so I can go back to using her as well. In the mean time I've been having fun playing as Anji even though playing as him is rough lol

How to learn a new character. Some people can just jump around, but I tend to get...attached. It's also just a me problem and a problem with every area of my life. Yes, I was the kid who went to Red Lobster and ordered chicken tenders. Right now, I started as Nagoryuki and am getting better but when I think about trying someone else, I get stuck. Maybe it's jut comfort/familiarity or some kind of sunk cost playing on my mind, but I just can't bring myself to learn the ins and outs of someone who doesn't has his problems, like Ram or Sol.

... well do you like Nago as a aesthetic better than those 2? If so then don't worry. Most characters can be played at a high level. You can get to Celestial with Nago. If you legit like another character, just tell yourself you're going to learn them so you can play them with lower level players. It's what I did with going from gio to millia. loved gio, but wanted more decided not just take millia for a test and fell in love with the setups.

He turned out to be so much fun for me that I'm not even interested in trying any other character - at least from the current roster.
    As for Top Tier:
I like playing against Sol players. Sometimes I lose, sometimes I win. But I keep thinking "This is just training for me. You piece of s#!7 will get nerfed eventually and then I'll wipe the floor with you." lol
