i read a little life in 2016 and i still think about it every day. i think it's just a powerful and amazing book. and of course i know it's not for everyone. but i think i read it at the right time so i can still think its impact.
Such a weird coincidence that so many people I know are reading super sad books, it's raining like CRAZY where I live, and my mental/emotional state has been ABSOLUTELY FRIED!!! Why are we all so extra depressed rn??? 🖤✒️🤍🏳️🕊️❕❔
This book is a wreck. I've never read anything like it, and yes, will never recommend to anyone. Still, can call it one of the best I've ever read🐈⬛️🖤❕️
I read a lot of A Little Life while commuting to and from work by train... meaning that the ending had me full-on sobbing on public transport 😭 Also, I know you have a huge TBR pile but this video reminded of a book I think you'd enjoy: Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson. It's super-slim and beautifully written, almost like poetry, and similarly deals with trauma (although nothing near as heavy as ALL) and the healing power of art and music. I read it earlier and it's really stayed with me. Anyway, hope you have a great weekend!
I love this book!! The moment you understand the title of ‘the axiom of equality’ is *chef’s kiss*… my jaw dropped! Genius!! (I’m aware it’s a super sad part but the writing is superb!)
I read this a couple years ago when it just came out and I was so invested. i buddy read it with a friend and my sister and oh man how we talked. I absolutely recommend reading with someone else. Still think this is one of my favorite books ever.
Loved following along with you and hearing your thoughts. Not my kind of read, although the domesticity in the beginning intrigued me, but sooo interesting to hear about it.
Hi August I love watching your videos! You’re so original in your reading choices and love your energy. Also love Winnie 😻 ugh I literally teared up watching you cry and I don’t know how I’m ever going to pick up this book. I think I’m going to wait a while until my mental health is back to par, but I do love a good sad literary fiction! Hope you’re well ❤️📚
I loved this book when I read it as much as it traumatized me.. but then people started going on about how it’s torture porn? and it kinda makes sense…
Please don’t continue if you really don’t feel like it!! It’s a great book, but only if you are in the right headspace and actually enjoying it. Don’t feel obliged to finish it, even if people are buzzing about it, it’s not worth compromising your mental health for a book🥰🥰
I am loving this vlog, because I love this book ❤❤❤ I read it 2018 9 months pregnant and I am wondering how i have handled it… Love your thoughts about the characteres and the atmosphere.
Hello dear! Lovely vlog! I had read "A little life" four years ago and I adored it. I am a big fan of Hanya Yanagihara. Can you tell me what song is at the beginning ?
definitely be super super cautious and mindful before going into it, if you decide to pick it up! I will never ever recommend this book because of how disturbing and upsetting it is
It’s just sitting on my bookshelf begging to be read for almost 6 months now but my mental health hasn’t been it’s best so it shall stay there until I’m ready. Hope you wait as well until you’re ready!
✨Off topic comment ✨ August, have you ever read anything by david eggers? I thrifted one of his books (it's called 'you shall know our velocity!') knowing absolutely nothing about it and now, as I am close to finish reading it, I can't stop thinking that it feels like a book that you would like. It does feature two white and straight male protagonists, which I know is not always your cup of tea, but it's such a quirky and interesting book... It is at the same time quite sad and emotional and extremely funny. Not really plot based and it provides quite the insight on the characters psique - who are two weird fellas who are experiencing grief in the strangest way I've ever seen. I would love to know what you think about it, if you ever have the chance to find a copy. (Just really needed to tell you that, now I'll finish watching the vlog lol)
I kept seeing this book pop up and was cautiously curious. You did this vlog and review very well. I don't think I will read the book though. It sounds like there are some rewards from how well it's done and the connection to the characters but I truly don't want to process the trauma. 🖤🤍📖
Even though I´ve already read "A little Life" and rated it to low back then... (now I also would say its a 4 out of 5 stars) , I am totally in the mood to pick it up again , thanks to you 🖤🤍

Omg I stopped reading it because I was scared for my mental health 😅 Maybe this is the motivation I need
