  • The critically endangered and rarest hummingbird of Ecuador is the Black-breasted Puffleg. I have been on many trips looking for this rare hummingbird and this last adventure was the craziest ever. This trip took us to the indigenous village of Piñan deep within the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve, a village that time seems to have forgotten.

The driving in mud gave me flashbacks to Montana dirt roads in April. Terrifying! As usual, your drone operator is totally amazing at capturing the country.

Awesome determination and perseverance Carole! When I heard about this place and the occurrence of the Black-breasted Puff-leg there, I wondered how much effort it would take to visit. Thank you for illustrating the effort required for this trip.
You were in the right spot. I admire your resolve.🥂

I moved to Ecuador from the US last year. I don’t know if I will ever do what you did, but I really hope I get to see more of this country soon. What an adventure you had.

And then you had to get back!!! What an absolutely amazing journey (I'm tempted to say appalling, but it's sooo beautiful up there!). I do believe that you will find this elusive hummer someday if you haven't already, but I also wouldn't describe you as a tourist. An explorer? Yes. An adventurer? Yes. A passionate supporter and documenter of rare hummingbirds? Absolutely! And for someone who doesn't like horses, you sat that one pretty well!

Wow that is quite the road up to there, and then more trekking beyond that! Sorry you didn't find the little sneak this time! Is there a "dry" season you could try again or is it usually a mess getting up there? The village must be quite self-sufficient being so remote.

Amazing! I know that route from Quito to Cotacachi quite well, passing through Cayambe, Lago San Pablo, Otavalo, and onto Pueblo Magico Cotacachi...Fun to see you in Matriz Park at the taxi stand in front of the cathedral. The rest of your journey I have never seen and likely won't, though I vicariously enjoyed your adventure. You are a trooper to go to the efforts that you do, and to share it here on your channel. Gracias! Suerte la proxima vez te vas buscando el colibri. Saludos!

What an amazing adventure you had Carole even though you didn't find the Black-breasted Puffleg, I have no doubt that you'll get that photo next time. Is the Sapphire-vented Puffleg already in your over 200 hummingbirds photos?
If not, it's nice you were able to see one Hummingbird on your most recent adventure. Love your content my lady, thank you and Godspeed to you.

Wow what a journey you've taken. I bet it was so beautiful to see Ecuador by exploring it on foot & horse. So sorry you didn't get to see the rare hummingbird of Ecuador, maybe in another time. We're very close by the signs Jesus Christ have been giving us that He will be here anytime now. Store UP our treasures for heaven and not of this Earth. God Bless to all of you and may we all be in heaven soon.

I do understand your love for hummingbirds but I think you have to find the balance between risk and enjoyment, your local operator and local contacts know the area pretty well, your health, safe and must be priority number 1. Thanks for posting such an amazing adventures but as I recommendation DO NOT PUT YOUR LIFE ON RISK
