I fitted the first model, like you 82-83. Wow it was a daunting prospect. Bear in mind we were still fitting lots of Solid Fuel systems then.
We didn’t know it needed a filling loop to fill the CH, phoned Vaillant, ended up with a WashMac hose & two valves😂😂😂
Vokera were one of the first to bring out Filling Loops.
Great to see the old girl Derek, thanks mate. Heating Geek has a few videos on repairing these, worth a watch👍👍

I still have a Vaillant Combi compact VCW 282 E RSF(room sealed fan). Fitted in 1992 it cost about £800 back then and still performing well 31 years on. Many new parts fitted mainly due to leaks, the first part I replaced was the black plastic DHW heat exchanger to the upgraded plate type heat exchanger. When new It came with an installation and fault diaganosis booklet which if patiently followed correctly nearly always finds the fault. Parts are still widely availlable and relatively cheap now as spares outlets try to offload stock. It's efficiency is about 80% compared to about 90%+ on new boilers, but new boilers seem to need more maintenance, servicing and replacing more often.

Hola, tengo uno así, pero no sé cómo regular la temperatura, me refiero al agua de la ducha.

    • @gaztipton972

@@mosabalnabelsi2420 There is a hot water control Knob shown at 15.54 in the video for regulating the hot water temperature to your hot water faucets/taps. The boiler will not regulate a safe temperature to a shower, the water to a shower should have a hot and a cold water supply, and temperature is selected by the shower's own temperature control/stabilising valve to stop you getting scalded.

Very informative video - thanks for upload.
Our vcw221h was fitted June 1990 - still works great .
Recent DHW problem solved by a new Servo c/w microswitch.

Hi Derek, I am a gas engineer in Durham and own a house that has a Vaillant VCW 221 H that not only is still installed but works perfectly, still looks new regardless of all the renters that have lived there distroying everything else. I can honistly say it has had only one problem being a end seal leak which I repaired well over 25 years ago. The anyliser reading ratio is never higher than 0.0002. I have just put the house up for sale. Wonder how long it will stay installed once a new owner moves in.

Can't beat the old Vaillants, well ahead of their time.
You're right about the VC/VCW differences - VC is heat only, VCW = combi.
Easiest way to tell - first two digits of GC number relate to the type of boiler. 41=CH/heat only, 47=combi

nice overview... my own VCW-242 gave up the ghost at the start of this year, had been in use since end of 89. only major fault was the plastic heat exchanger went about 15 years ago as most of the them did and swapped it out for the newer metal replacement.
The diverter valve needed cleaning out once or twice as well as a microswitch that packed up.. cases were all enamel too, well built for their time.
Complicated but gave 32 years of decent service. the flow rate on the hot water was sized on mine too.

Yes, those tubular DHW heat exchangers were before plate heat exchangers. Inside each one there was coiled 10mm(ish) copper tube. This was the first boiler I ever fitted in my own home and it lasted about 16 years. I had to get rid of it because of the corroion on the DHW heat exchanger = just like on yours. Like you say, they were complex boilers and a nightmare to fault find on but they were well made.

Used to have a customer with an old open flued Worcester Combi but accidentally on purpose managed to get rid of that one 🥴 This is what you walk into at 3:30pm on a Friday afternoon!

i still have a fan flued version on my book that i maintain and had to fit a upgraded plate to plate on it. in the 1980's i was fitting the myson midas combi's

Also regarding the plate heat exchanger bit, this combi had a convetional metal plate heat exchanger just like a curent one. The stupid plastic ones like on your example were a later introduction. They were awfull and would get splits in them all the time. The plastic ones were discontinued and the fix was a kit which just happened to be the origional PHE and the pipework to convert them back to the way they were origionally. How many times have you seen the good brass parts replaced with plastic stuff just to see it fail time after time.

VCW: "w" water= combi you remember correctly ;-) Fitted lots back in the day. The one before was the VCW/mag Sine? first vaillant combi I fitted was 84 ish, no proper fill loops available here then, so we used washing machine valves with a cutdown w/m hose, don't remember if double checks featured................
I still see one of these every year for service and it keeps soldiering on .........
Appliances have changed out of all recognition during our working time!

I remember the argument I had with my dad back in 1983 about how we were going to fill the system. In the end we made a copper u off 2 gate valves so it could be removed, well it was installed in a factory offices 😜

Good evening, I have a boiler like the one in the video, my problem is as follows: When I open the hot water the boiler starts regularly but after a few minutes the boiler goes into lockout the red light turns on and the black switch goes out, by pressing the black button again the boiler works again. Could you please tell me what it depends on?
    Thank you

Interesting. If a genius like *YOU* says it was a complicated boiler then no doubt it must have been. It’s definitely the oldest boiler I have seen. Thanks Derek 👍🏻

Hi I am a consumer: I watched your VCW balanced flue version with interest.Actually I got a similar boiler VCW Sine 18 I couldn't Get my hot water sorted yet. Engineer got going for a while but soon H/W stopped working I was told that because of overheating. I can only get H/W when the system on heating mode. I got servo pipes but it's not visible like VCW 221 when engineer open the front panel. Any help wellcome. K.M
