      Also, it bothered me that if her accusations were the truth- why wasn't she mad at Dean for punching her boyfriend? Especially after she saw Dean didn't have a black eye. If my boyfriend showed up with an injury (no matter the circumstances) I would show some concern for him!

    The town represents childhood right down to the swan. It's a safe place for Rory because her mom keeps her safe, but Jess doesn't have that kind of safety. He gets attacked where she gets accepted.

    • @rachaelknudsen8801
      @rachaelknudsen8801 14 днів тому +9

      True. However at the start, he didn't want to be there and acted like it. He stole the money to repair the town bridge, kicked one of Babbette's gnomes, created a public nuisance with his fake chalk outline in front of Doosey's. While Rory could be called out for not being on his side, his reputation doesn't speak well for him.

    Favorite line from the episode, and one of my favorites from the entire show: "you went to Rory's grandmother yesterday, she hit you?" That and "not the ladle, that's a brand new ladle. Take the baster!" It's really one of my favorite episodes, and in large part because of the interactions between Luke and Jess.

    I love the talk that Luke and Jess had, Luke speaks from the heart and he was really a great guardian for Jess. Also Emily was so classy at the dinner, she was probably burning from the inside, thinking that Rory's life was gonna be ruined by Jess, but stayed calm for Rory.

    Rory was so wrong this episode. She knows it hard for Jess to open up about anything and pushing him isn't going to help. I get why she went to Dean but she is with Jess now and needs to trust him, I wouldn't be ok with my partner going to their ex to check if I was lying. Don't care that they are friends, I'm your partner and if you can't trust me then we can't be together. Jess could've been nicer to Emily but I get why he was being like that.
    Also, I always found Rory and Jess very interesting. He kind of starts where Rory ends, and Rory kind of ends where he starts.

    If Emily was like this even 75% if the time, she would be so so much easier to spend time with! Even if she's working at it HARD, it's so kind, gracious to someone she *might* think is "beneath" Rory, and mindful of Rory and Jess having their own little relationship together.

      I think if he had been open and honest about it from the start instead of coming in with an attitude, she would have believed him. But since she didn't know what was going on and he refused to talk about it, she assumed the worst. Still, she should have let it go during dinner and waited until later to push him about it, when he's had more time to cool off.

    Rory does many things wrong when it comes to her relationships. She's not a great girlfriend (in my opinion). Some people think her bfs were bad but she was as well many times.
    Even if they're characters, I think it's great to have them do stuff like this because it makes them more human.
    What dislike is that the show makes it seem like Rory is an angel an never does anything wrong.

    • @anainesgonzalez8868
      @anainesgonzalez8868 14 днів тому +4

      @anainesgonzalez8868 from my perspective it's more that the show itself makes it seem like she's not doing anything wrong and that translates to the public watching. Okay, but are we really going to act like that's not a fair assumption to make considering Jess HAS been getting in fights with Dean? I'm really not a fan of the whole Rory-blaming going on because people are refusing to see her side of it. Imagine this; your partner cheats on you, you forgive them. Then a few months later, your partner comes home late in a crappy mood, their clothes are rumpled and they refuse to tell you where they have been. Obviously you're going to assume the worst for a moment.

    It is amazing how this scene shows two characters that have many bad moments on the show have their best moments.
    Emily is known for being rude and tactless and manipulative, but she is great here. She is not judging Jess or focusing on the black eye. She is not treating him like they treated Dean at first. She is flexible with Jess’s sarcasm which she does not handle well with Lorelai. And the fact she can already understand his bad mood due to the traffic jam is great. Who are you and what have you done with Emily Gilmore.
    And Jess did have his bad moments at first. That was the start if his gradual arc, but I appreciate how he is trying to set his bad mood aside to impress Emily. He is not overly rude, but Emily can see he is trying. Except for the raisins, he is being nice about the menu she is serving. Some can be picky and rude about what people serve.
    His anger only comes out when Rory is provoking him. Anyone will lose it when they keep nudging them and ignoring an explicit boundary.
    I am mad at Rory. Stop nudging. He will tell you when he is ready to tell you. Even Emily gets that since she is not pressing him about it.

  • @eb7446
    @eb7446 15 днів тому +12

    I think it's stuff like this where Jess and Rory show such potential, and is why it's painful(but very realistic and honestly written) when it falls apart. Jess still has a lot of growing and learning to do, and it makes sense that at 18 he just couldn't help but fall back into that damaging learned habits. I like though that you can see in S4 just how badly he regrets it all(despite still hiding behind those defense mechanisms still, as you state). I guess we'll talk more about it when we get there, but I like the way Jess's S4 story ended. He was ready to own his mistakes, but he still needed to learn that won't always be enough. And I suppose he did learn that by the time he comes back in S6(if you liked how Jess handled Dean after he and Rory got together and his improved communication and self control, you're going to really respect him in a certain scene in S6 with Rory's Yale boyfriend, Logan).

    A couple of things: I always thought that the Rory/Jess relationship is a screen for the real “love” story of Luke and Jess. They both have a powerful connection with each other and make each other better. They are so great together because they need each other so badly.
    Second thought: this is early days of Rory’s slide into being a much more human character, who is entitled and pushy and really selfish. Not only pushing Jess at dinner, but also essentially accusing Dean of getting into a fight with him. (Foreshadowing! Foreshadowing!) This fight is all in her head and speaks to her own insecurity about Jess. (Foreshadowing).

    I think the reason why we sometimes lie about things our loved ones ask us about is because we’re too ashamed or embarrassed to admit it.
    I remember one day mum came home, she’d asked me to do the dishes and I hadn’t because I’d been watching TV all day and that made me feel a lot of shame and guilt and I couldn’t tell her even though I know where it would lead.
    Sometimes it’s because we know what they’ll say and we don’t need to hear it over and over again (I did this after most of my driving lessons).
    I would never get mad at anyone for lying to me out of shame, or guilt or embarrassment because I get it

She could’ve handled it differently and at another time, also telling Lorelai he was in a fight when she wasn’t even sure and just accepted it wasn’t when Dean said it was disappointing. I know Jess has a reputation and everything but he’s trying his best to do better, still fails sometimes but he’s listening more and learning too and that’s why I love his character so much.

Being brought up in a cult, being a younger sibling, and observing what worked for my sibling and then coming up with the cover story. The story to save myself from needless punishment or having consequences that told me I wasnt good enough. This included healthy sexual behaviors, being curious about things I wasnt allowed to do, and having to inform on others for "their sins" and watching them go through a horrible time for lets say not grooming correctly. Thats when I developed the cover story/lie to protect myself from not being perfect to the cults expectations and not reaping the punishments my sibling got. It took me a long time to figure out why I always went to the cover story in my adult life, even on things that were not that important.

    Only thing I'm curious about is if he'd told Rory about the swan like he did with Luke, would she had actually believed him? 😘 Because even though it's..
    What sincerely happened, it's just one of those scenarios that when you hear it for the first time, it comes across as quite far- fetched so it could've potentially led.....
    To Rory getting even more annoyed with him, thinking he made it all up as it's not a very typical everyday scenario said with respect, love and kindness 💗

    The ending, as I see it, was Rory allowing Jess to save face. If Jess was legitimately, truly lying to Rory, he would have told her something believable. She knows he has no "buddies" in this town. She knows that he's not at all into sports. And, as she pointed out, that story wasn't embarrassing.
    He didn't come right out and say it, but by telling such an obvious, transparent lie, he was communicating: "What happened was humiliating-please don't make me tell you..." And by accepting it, she was demonstrating that if it really is something he doesn't want to talk about, she won't push anymore.

  • @xerezcamila

    About that last point, I think he did have reason to fear being rejected by rory, if only in his mind. He sees Dean as this strong guy who's better than him in every way that counts for a girl like rory, and Dean, this knight in shining armor, would've never get beacked by a swan. He is always comparing himself to Dean, and in his mind that would be a plausible cause for her rejection and her to compare them both, which is a constant source of fear to him.
    And it does not help at all that in this case there's a whole other set of possible rejection and judgement embodied by rory's grandmother, and that he was being put in the spot to out himself right in front of her with this matter that made him so vulnerable to all his existing triggers with his relationship, and that she is clearly a huge influence on rory and what she thinks, so even if rory wouldn't judge him at first (which he doesn't believe), her grandmother might have said her piece to her and help make her mind that she was with a lesser guy than before (which he already thinks is true).

    It's honestly so funny to me how Emily was at her best here in this episode with Jess (when in actuality, I feel like it's in her nature to get upset about something like this happening because Jess didn't give a proper first impression, so that would've totally stuck with her, so it's kind of ironic how she didn't question things for once. Also, I wonder how Richard would've reacted to Jess, because I don't think they've ever met before, maybe in passing? But still... I feel like he and Jess would've bonded over books too or something), and unfortunately, Lorelai wasn't there to witness it. It's like they deliberately and intentionally made her miss this... but then again, I get it lol Lorelai and Jess barely got along, but I still would've liked to see her reaction. As for the fight, it was honestly such a realistic one, which felt almost too real. I could see both sides of their argument, but I really wish they didn't make Rory jump into conclusions about his black eye because she's clearly happy and in love with Jess, so why bring up Dean again?? She was so impatient here, and she should've backed off when he told her to. As for Jess, he's always tried for Rory because of how much he loves her in return, so maybe he wouldn't have had to feel embarrassed about the black eye because Rory would have totally found a way around it to make him not feel so insecure or whatever if he had told her about it, and I feel like he should've stuck around for the dinner because relationships are about sacrifice, so yes, while it was Rory's idea for him to come here, even if he didn't want to, he still should've tried with Emily. But this was such a good moment in their relationship because despite everything, they still found a way to properly get over that fight and talk things out in the manner they both think works for the two of them. Also, this fight was like them almost bringing out the worst in each other because the things that they talked about? Oh wow... it was a lot of big stuff for people who are that young in age. No teenaged couple should have to get into such a horrible fight about something that started off so trivial, but eventually led to this huge thing, where they end up bringing up their backgrounds and whatnot, but I feel like that's the point, and I honestly loved that fight regardless, because it added more depth and complexity to the nature of their relationship, and it makes a lot of sense given how Rory and Jess's biggest asset is their intellectual conversations, which fits perfectly well. Lastly, I agree with everything you said in this video. It's the exact way I felt about this part. Love your content ❤❤ (Also, since you were wondering, Rory and Jess's ship name is "Literati" because they're two people who love literature, so us fans have coined the term "Literati" from the actual dictionary for them because it fits them perfectly well 🥰 but there are other people out there who call them "Jory" but "Literati" is the better option)

    Even though I agree that Rory handled this situation terribly and should have apologized sooner, I can't really blame her for thinking he got into a fight with Dean considering his history. He spent a majority of season 2 bullying Dean and even tried to hit Dean once before. And right before the dinner he straight up told Rory he wanted to punch Dean, so when he shows up with a black eye and is acting all shady, I can see why she made that assumption. Not cool but understandable given Jess's past behavior.

    I think you miss the reason, out of sheer spite of Jess, as much as you're starting to appreciate him. He doesn't want the whole town of Star's Hollow to know. He has so many trust issues, it seemed obvious ever since (and also from my own personal experience). Jess is also not the talkative type, and having to tell the story every time to whoever asked about it, or to be continually teased like Luke was doing would just set him off.

    I was always bugged at Luke's reaction to jess getting attacked. It made for some funny dialogue, but, instead, if he'd said, "Ouch, that would have hurt, I'm sorry!" Or "you dont need to be embarrassed about that. Swans are big birds and can be really mean. " Then Jess might not have been so ashamed and maybe would have told the truth to Rory. I dont know, that's not really Luke's character, but clearly, the child in front of you has their guard up because he's embarrassed, hurt, and proud and worried about people making fun of him. How about, instead of making him feel worse about it by confirming that fear, you let him know you care, and it's ok, and maybe you'll laugh about it later? Obviously, that's not how their relationship works, but I've been bugged by this since I first watched it when it came out.

    Mm interesting I don't think Rory was in the wrong. Jess knew her grandparents had high standards, and that a black eye would look really bad. He could've quickly explained a swan attacked him and it would've been fine. It was his choice to hold that information back, and it was his choice to continue to lie to her about what happened even after the fact. He was also late and rude at the dinner. In my opinion, Rory had every right to be mad and handled it as calmly as possible. Maybe it's my female mind, but I think just dropping the issue and letting it fester under the surface is not a good way to go
