If it’s sound, keep the 300 cube 6. Not the fastest, but it will run forever.
Agreed. That was my first thought as well when Tommy suggested an engine upgrade. The inline 6 engines have unreal low end which is what you want in an truck set up this way. Maybe upgrade to a 5 speed manual trans from the 4 speed instead of doing the engine swap.
@@dannyo6699, I agree with a 5 speed swap, MAYBE even a heavy duty 5 speed that has a granny gear.
An Offenhauser intake with Holley fuel injection would add hp and torque and increase driveability significantly. I would not add a header as this engine doesn’t benefit much from an aftermarket header and it may induce cold start stumbling issues. However, I would swap in the exhaust manifold from a later multipoint fuel injected 300 as it is a bolt-on and flows significantly better than stock and it doesn’t induce cold start thermal issues as aftermarket headers do on this engine.
ups used to have vans with 300" 6 and 4 speed had that sound , still hear it in my mind
Completely agree
Keep the engine.
lt's your build but l would have gone for deep dish plain steel rims, they seem to suit trucks of this vintage better.
I live the wheels! I think you should name her “Orange Crush.”
Keep the straight 6. Those 300s are legendary
It would seem weird to nix the 6 considering how much of a big deal was originally made about it being there. Cam, header, offie intake, small 4 barrel nothing crazy but something to get a little more kick. If you swap anything find an EFI 300 from an OBS. Was looking forward to a 300 4X4.
The 300 inline 6 is in my personal top 5 for best engines ever made.
300 is legendary engine removing it from that truck is a sin.
They should definitely keep the 6
Your new intro sounds like Star Wars. I miss the old intro.
Agree 100%
I miss it too
I hope you all keep that old, classic 300 straight 6. Perhaps just look at doing some tuning, or other work on it. They sound great, and were workhorses.
Btw, those HD 300 inline sixes are a find. Especially the exhaust manifolds, and I believe but could be wrong that they also had forged crankshafts.
You are correct about the crankshaft. These engines were used in heavy equipment and the commercial industry for decades. Most people don't know that. They were excellent engines
The commercial versions had the forged crank and steel timing gears. The “consumer” version had a non-forged crank and nylon timing gears.
@@MrGarfield4 yeah so since Tommy's truck has a commercial engine they may just wanna run through it, update the fuel system, mild cam, valve springs and rockers, call it good. It's be a stout machine.
Out of the entire fleet this is my favorite. I just hope TFL doesn't ruin it.
Judging by the wheel choice, I think they'll stay true to the truck.
@@samh.6788 I fear they will be to flashy for that particular truck. It's there truck there choice.
@@robertyoung8289 I see that, I've got a 77' f150, and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. I'm hoping to get a little guidance from these guys.
The biggest question here is, where did the scissor go?
Power Nation just did a 300 i6 NA build and got 270 hp and 338 lb ft of torque with a cam and some bolt ons. They plan on putting a turbo on it for the next step. Would make for a nice motor for your truck.
sound deadening A LOT of it
Yes line the inside of the cab with sound deadening
Project orange truck. Perfect!
That will be a really cool project.
It's also really cool that both the orange truck and Kases truck predate you and Kase. (I'm guessing Tommy was born right around '94).
And the "They'll look swell" comment fit the retro theme perfectly!
Best. Pickup. Truck. Wheel. EVER.
When the cheap project truck is no longer a cheap project truck.
Not saying this is anyone's fault - just saying it's a good lesson for us inexperienced folk on what to watch out for in an old truck.
Great job and hello from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Looks so cool definitely need make this your daily Tommy
I love this truck build and I would either redo the six cylinder and put a turbo on it or look at putting the new Ford 7.3 Godzilla motor you can buy that as a crate engine
Those engines are starting to turn up in wrecking yards now, so a wrecker sourced 7.3 and transmission might be an option. A full frame swap onto a 2020 F250 7.3 frame would be cool too, but TFL would never go that far.
This project truck is so cool its like the first Raptor in my opinion, 4wd etc.
You better keep the 300 I6! If not, I'll take it off your hands, Dont scrap it! Like this build!
The “steelie” design wheels always butters my toast
Super interested in this build.
Check out power nation's Ford inline 6 build
They did a nice job and added a lot of power to the little thing.
I watched it a while back, they did an awesome job.
Those wheels are beautiful.
If there was ever a truck that should have steelies, it's this one...what a supercool rad pickle we are in...
Honestly I think it would be really cool if you guys got in touch with the Engine Power guys from Spike...they built a Ford inline 6 and made some pretty good numbers with it. But also as a name you could go with F100 smiles.
Power nation youtube also has the videos, at least two 300 builds I have seen so far.
I wish they would have kept "Rusty Boy" . But this is going to be a cool build as well.
I like the idea of keeping this truck a 6 shooter. There are hop up parts for these engines. You don’t want to run them over 5,000 rpm, but you can get a ton of torque out of them in the 1500 to 3500-4000 rpm range. Perfect for doing truck stuff with it.
I like the sound "project orange" name
There are some fairly simple upgrades you can do on that straight 6 to make it fairly stout with intake, carb, and cam. Or do a full rebuild and raise the compression a bit.
Thank you for not putting 20s on the truck having a bigger sidewall makes the tires look a lot meaner. Plus there better off road, but that wheel tire combo will look outstanding.
The little 2.8 cummins crate diesel motor would be super cool in this thing. Heck, they might even give you one for the exposure. I don't think may people even know it exists.
keep that I-6 bulletproof
That 6 cylinder in the truck can be rebuilt to add a lot of power for its size and keep the engine if you want. I do not know who you could get to do it but it is done. If you want a yt video on one done tag this I I will look for the one I watched a while ago. I figured it was a frame swap from a 250 and that is better than just an axle swap the frame should be stronger. Get the underbody coated or sealed to protect it also if you can.
Try finding parts for a 1958 mercury 850 not only is it hard to get parts for a mercury truck but a 850 mercury is a added challenge as no parts store has it in there computer and most people have never heard of them
Love the wheels
Honestly the MAG wheels deserved to be on that truck, th3y looked very good. I would find tires that are 16x5
The headliner isn't missing they didn't come with them on every truck. You had to get the right optioned truck to have them
Go back to the Forest Service green! I love that distinctive color.
This is THE TRUCK that I want most, right now,...ohhh that 300 SIX!
Man, I like those new tires and wheels, great choice here. Yes, please keep that Omaha Orange color too.
I have similar wheels (M/T classic II) on my 92 swb z71. Glad you kept with the era of the truck
There's a video (can't remember who did it at the moment) where they rebuilt a 300 with high compression pistons, head, and cam. Took the motor from 88hp to 270 with 335 to. Not bad for normally aspirated.
Engine Power over on Motor Trend TV did that build.
Power nation youtube is great!!
Can’t wait to see the transformation of this truck
Really cool idea is the 2.8 cummins or go find a 4.0L stright 6 from a Jeep. You can drop that in with the transmision and transfer case.
Love it! Dad had one of this in red brings memories trying to learn to drive in it!
These old truck fix ups have been my favorites to follow like Big Green and Orange Crush...
Build the straight 6 with a fuel injection setup. So bump the compression, mild cam, headers, roller rockers, intake and a aftermarket injection setup. You will be happy with the diesel like torque you can get out of that engine.
Get a new suspension and shocks, no big lift but a better ride.
Go with disc brakes, especially in front, and do the dual master ASAP. I hate cleared over faded/patina paint jobs, but it would probably look OK on the Great Pumpkin.
Because of the orange colour and extent of the rebuild, how about Project Phoenix?
Or "Orange Crush?"
You should call it what it is. The Old Orange Beast. And...Keep the six.
Thanks for answering the call Tommy!!! Your the best my friend...got work in ten min.. enjoy the day 🌞!!
I would replace the master cylinder but I wouldn’t let that keep me from driving the truck in the meantime. In my experience a dual master only gives you an extra pump or two, either way your reservoir will go empty and you WILL lose brakes on all four wheels. My 2007 FJC suddenly lost all brakes on me a couple of years ago, the difference is you can add fluid back and get maybe 2 more pumps before it’s out of fluid again.
You guys are in Colorado I think you should call the project "Orange Crush Truck" in tribute to the Denver Broncos Orange Crush Defense.
I like the American Racing Polished Aluminum wheels.
Have david make your Headliner. I love the 300 i6 but a 4.5l inline 4 cummins would be a great option. They can be turned up powerwise and you'll have fuel economy and even more torque with granny and 4lo.
Raffle, RAFFLE !!! 🙌😁🙃🤸♂️👊🤗 please.... I have a 347 stroker that has been sitting for years waiting for a engine bay to go in 😉
Yeah I got that same wheel cant go wrong with the American Racing baja wheels
Great wheel choice. I prefer the Indy mag style that is already on it but the american racing Baja wheels are classic and will look great
Keep the straight 6 they sound good and they're super reliable and torquey.
Just bought super swampers for my 16.5 rims 286 per tire and they are a mud radial as well not a big TSL lug.
I like the new wheels and tires for it, great choice! If my memory serves me correctly, in a previous video, I believe you said it used to be a forestry service truck and that the original paint color was green. If it were my own personal vehicle, I would stick with the patina'd orange color, but that's just me. It's also ironic that you said that the truck looks like something out of a Stephen King movie, idk if I would take it that far, but you're right, it does look like something out of a movie! (I was thinking more along the lines of the movie Lords of Dogtown/Dogtown and Z Boys, the "Our Town" scene in the movie Cars, the movie On The Road (based on the novel by Jack Kerouac), the movie Into The Wild (also with Emile Hirsch and Kristen Stewart), and/or the remake of the movie Footloose with Julianne Hough and Kenny Wormald). For that reason, I think "Orange Crush" would be not only be a perfect name for it, but would also be appropriate! It seems like one of those special vehicles that has some real feel to it and has obviously been around a while and if it could talk, I'm sure it would have quite a few stories to tell about the places that it's been, the things it's seen, and the owner or owner's that it's had over the years. I think once it gets out of the shop and everything gets fixed and some things get replaced, maybe you guys could make it the official TFL Studios shop truck! It would also make a great old school cross-country roadtrip truck! I think it's time to get off the highway, get off the beaten path, slow it down, get back on the road less traveled, make lasting memories, have fun, have adventures, and go and find the roots and the heart and the soul of this great country!
I have those wheels in black on my '94 Bronco, not 8-lug though of course lol
Best project TFL has going right now! How about a 2022 Raptor R chassis under that '65 body . .
Inflation is unreal, I have those exact same wheels, also 8 lug, and they were $99 back in 2015..... but now are $220 in 2021. Last I checked that is highway robbery.
I have the same pattern of rim from them but in black.
Put a 7.3 Godzilla in it. Plenty of room, and it’d be fun!
I know you guys don't really do engines but freshening up that I6 would be nice.
Keep the straight 6 and build it up, i had a mildly built up 351 windsor and it struggled turning 37s compared to my mildly built 300 6,
Look at fordsixperformance for big block 6
These motors on a stock block are capable of 500 hp without boost and put out some insane torque at ultra low rpms too
Properly tuned can also see about 22 to 25 mpg with tall tires and keeping that i6 on the Power band
I really like the choice on wheels, I've looked at these several times myself. I was running 17 inch pro comps on my old F250 and really liked the size, especially on older trucks.
Feel like "project orange" was a real missed opportunity for "agent orange". Anyway, I'm in full support of an earlier comment about doing a segment on sound proofing. Maybe a couple nice speakers too so overall the truck is welcoming to drive and not a tin can.
Leave the six, horsepower TV did a cool build on the 300 ci. Made good reliable power.
Lovely truck, but I do think as a 65 it should have painted steel wheels with a chrome hub, just my opinion I like ‘an honest looking vehicle’👍
I love that old Ford truck
Crate 5.0L coyote V8! I love restomod trucks with vintage body but fuel injection.
I love that truck, I’ll be following this build closely.
My Mom owned a truck that looks almost exactly like this truck; same color and maybe even same year. She owned it in the '80s when we lived out West (Wyoming and Idaho, I believe). The truck's name was Tallulah Belle. I can't find any pictures of it. :( I'm curious who is listed as previous owners.
You should call it "Project Agent Orange". I was literally built in the era...
How about making it blazing saddle? Love the look of the wheel and tire combo.
Love the truck! Definitely looking forward to it! Keep the inline 6 and don't fancy up the paint to much!
A buddy had a 66 with a 390 auto back in high school. We modded a manually operated exhaust dump for it. The truck wasn't fast by today's standards but it was loud and did nice burnouts.
PowerNation has done some Ford 300 builds that would be a good basis for your engine. I don’t know if they have an engine sitting around that you could procure but it might be worth a check.
Those are nice wheel but some Detroit steel wheels would have looks really cool on it .
I`d buy it.
Great truck! Looking forward to some good content with this. I had a f150 with the 300 six and 35" mt's. It did great!
Looking forward to seeing the updates to the Orange is the New Black F-100. Hmmm, maybe swap in a Coyote motor from a wrecked Mustang and call it the Orange-utang?
Keep the straight 6. There's a reason Ford only did minor changes to that engine over like 40 years. They are wonderful make power and torque like a diesel and run forever.
You should do a 7.3 swap!!!!!!
I wonder if you would be able to find the original straight 6 for that truck because that was an awsome engine.
yo if u keep that industrial 300 i6 u can put 44's on it with some gears and it will chug its happy ass up ANY hill. those industrial 300s have more torque than youd expect and they make awesome rock crawlers. no highway use tho
Hey Tommy, love the old Ford. I learned how to drive stick on my brother's '66 F250 - also orange.
New tires are the most satisfying thing you can do to a car.
Nice rig. We have a 65 mercury m100 4x4( canadian version of your f100) it actually belonged to my girlfriends. Grandfather.
Love the idea of keeping the 6 unless it needs too much. I would love to see someone build a 351 specifically for off-road ...ie. torque monster
@@shitloveaduck thats awesome! I think a 351 would be a great compromise between a 302 and a big block. I wouldn't even mind seeing one done carbureted. Or maybe carbureted then switched to injection just to compare performance.
Maybe one of the new 6 cylinder Powerstoke engines?
Keep the six!
Frank would be a great name for it
How about “orange juice” or “orange slice” or just “big orange” for the truck name? Or “Highway” because it’s the same color as a state highway dump truck/snow plow and it a high boy truck.
Tire rack had wheels for there truck but not mine wow these companies. Been searching for wheels for 5 years now
