I buy most of my games digitally, but still have discs because they go on deep sale sometimes. Ok, ok, we get it you have lots of money that this doesn't matter to you. The price is $700? Comparing the PS5 all digital to the same as PC all digital is an incorrect comparison. On PC you're open to get your games from multiple storefronts, you're not locked to the whims of Sony and their PSN pricings. It's not the same and the constant comparison to it is incorrect.

As of March 31, 2024, the PS5 disc version has sold more units than the digital version, with 59.2 million units sold compared to the digital version. However, the PS5 is still behind the PS4, which sold 60 million units in the same time frame. Is weird thinking digital is taking over

I’ve been playing it slowly with my girlfriend because Astro’s Playroom is her favorite game on PS5 lol so we only play it when we have that time together at night. People consider going from PS to PC because if your "high end" gaming is being forced into an all digital future then you might as well go with the most potent, open and consumer friendly ecosystem. I for one will save up for a good rig instead of investing in the Pro because I'd have to pay the euro equivalent of >1000$ to get the Pro plus stand and disc drive (how is the disc drive 130€ in Europe??). I will go base PS5 performance mode or PC for PS5 exclusives - depending on the length of the exclusivity window and my want to play asap and the Switch 2 will likely become my new "main" for physical media. There are numerous reasons why a disc drive is still essential - no internet dependency, backwards compatibility, ownership, more than one storefront etc. but please keep listing mtx/pc/mobile skewed statistics when the Insomniac leaks have already proven that physical makes up a big chunk of first party sales - about 60% iirc.

$700 for a mid gen refresh, + $80 for disc drive, and $30 stand. It's ridiculous. That's $800+ before tax for a MID GEN REFRESH. It's absolutely ridiculous. And trust me, some games will still run at 30fps on it. This also concerns me about the future price of a ps6. Are we also going to claim ps6 is for enthusiasts only?
I won’t hate on anyone upgrading to a Pro.. But personally $700 to play PS4 games to the level that PS5 originally promised is a no-go for me. Not even seeing the kinds of upgrades the One X offered last gen on 360 games is wild to me. I’d much rather spend my $700 on more stocks/investments or wait for the Switch 2
With the Switch 2 coming out next year, you will be able to buy it, an extra controller, a few games, and a carrying case and still have saved some money compared to buying a PS5 Pro. They chose to have that cost at the sake of keeping a younger audience as customers. We actually see the alternative solution with the Steam Deck.

Its the principal colin. At that price building a PC isn't far off, and far easier to stomach. I say that as a PC guy. There's 1000-dollar prebuilt systems out right now that match it, without the monthly cost of online multiplayer and cloud saves. With the benefit of multiple storefronts to push the price of games lower. Consoles are supposed to be for the budget minded. at 700 minimum(no drive, no stand, and assuming you live in the US) going PC is now reasonable.

I just can't justify paying $700 (more like $800+ with taxes, disc drive, and stand) for what was basically already promised but never delivered with the original PS5. Not to mention, there's still no games in sight! If this was releasing alongside a new huge AAA game then maybe I'd be enticed, but I'm definitely not paying that much just to see pixels in the backgrounds slightly sharper or to get fps boosts for PS4 games when the XSX does that no extra charge.

At this point, the PS5 Pro is for people with more money than sense, given that the PS5 has been hampered by extended PS4 cross-platform development. Software development will always favor the lowest common denominator, so even long term, the reality is that the Pro's potential will never be tapped before the PS6 releases. I don't think we've fully seen the base PS5 tapped in the same way as previous generations. Also, Colin talks about the disc drive issue and pokes fun at people considering jumping to PC, where digital storefronts are the norm. Yet so far in this video, I've yet to hear anyone mention the latent annual cost of a PS+ membership in order to access parts of purchased games. That adds to the cost as well over time. So if people are looking at the future and seeing where digital storefronts are the norm, then it might make sense to go with the option that allows for more flexibility in customization, as well as prioritizing a platform that doesn't require an additional service that otherwise paywalls the full offerings of the game. The disc drive issue also foreshadows what likely becomes the new norm for Sony going forward--upselling it as an optional accessory (or added cost) as opposed to prepackaging and selling multiple SKUs. They've done the same thing with the stand with the PS5 Pro. What's next for the PS6? No controller included? The reality is that the market will decide these things when all is said and done. But it's hard not to see a reckoning coming, if larger and larger amounts of people are priced out of the market. As a longtime Sony supporter, they've lost the thread with me this generation, and I don't know if I'll even be moving forward with their next gen hardware. But people get to make their own choices, based on how they perceive value. I guess we'll see what happens.

It's a luxury item and obviously it's not for students and low income people. Does it make sense? Probably not, but I have 2 dual sense edges that I got on launch (1 to play and 1 to charge while I'm playing) and if tommorow Sony would release Dual Sense Edges in new colors I'm quite certain I would buy 2 new ones in a hearbeat, they cost more then half a PS5 Pro. So yeah I'm getting a PS5 Pro day 1.

The people who say they want to switch to PC (where physical media no longer exists) because the pro doesn’t come with a disc drive are completely justified because there’s a good chance their entire PS5 library is physical. The problem with this situation is that my entire library is physical so this new hardware is useless unless I want to pay the disc drive tax. In fact I’m sure a good majority of people have PS4 games physically that they’ll either have to rebuy or not replay on the new hardware.

I really really hate the “we dont pay enough for games”. Yes tf we do! Sony already there killing physical, so retail fee goes away. Most paid online games require a subscription for online. Most games have special edition which is additional 10-50 extra with little work. Most games have DLC which are always upcharged. And a lot have MTX which cost NOTHING to make and generate BILLIONS. Spare me with this argument that games were actually more expensive when we all know gaming is more profitable and bigger than ever even accounting for inflation
Sure, but keep in mind that all of the examples you're describing were likely put into place specifically *because* games haven't kept up with the price of inflation. Companies discovered through market research that people weren't willing to pay more for base price videogames, so they found other ways to extract more value (with things like microtransactions, battle passes, etc)-and that appears to have worked, given the data on how many people spend money on those things (especially in otherwise F2P games). I'm not saying that's right, and in fact I basically agree with your point (or at least your implicit point, i.e. "I don't want to spend more money on stupid BS"); my preference would be to do away with all the nonsense upcharges/subscription models/etc and just have games be a little bit more expensive in exchange. But it's worth at least understanding the "why" of the whole phenomenon. Given how bloated game budgets have become, I think these companies feel like they have to make their money SOMEwhere, and so they've chosen these smaller streams of revenue rather than an overall increase in price. (The other solution, which I would love, would be for games to become cheaper to make-and I WOULD love that, because I'm a massive fan of smaller-budget indie titles and VNs and stuff like that-but that appears to be unlikely to happen anytime soon, unfortunately. All we can do in the meantime is vote with our wallets.)

Not to mention that it's not like all of those extra revenue sources would go away if prices increased. We've already been told that lie and look what happened - $70 games and we still get Day 1 $40 season passes or $110 Full Editions. So even if base games cost $80 they'd still be cutting content for DLC later or selling us microtransactions.
A console without a disc drive solely relying on its digital marketplace is not the same as a PC without a disc drive. Preservation on PC is almost a non-issue, with platforms such as GOG where you can buy a game and have a backup, I don't have to worry about the service closing in 20 or so years. Console digital stores just vanish, just look at Nintendo, Microsoft or what Sony was planning to do with Vita/Ps3... The way Colin mocks people for wanting to play their PS4 in the future is totally out of touch. It would be wiser to advise people to buy physical games in times when licenses expire, games disappear, services go down, etc.

People who can't afford gaming related hardware/software shouldn't be complaining then. Which seems to be a majority that are complaining about the pricing. They all want the Pro which is why the complaints are there. They hope to see the "we hear you" post from Sony regarding the price.
The dig on going to PC where it has no physical media is so dumb to me. It is a clear misunderstanding on what value Steam provides and what value Sony provides. I have games I bought on steam 20 years ago that still work. I bought ps1 games on PS3 that I can't play on PS4 and PS5. One of the main value points Sony and other consoles provided was physical media, them going away from it means they have way less value. The digital library on PlayStation is worthless and will be reset in a console or two. Oh, and guess what, those games I bought 20 years ago also work on a steam deck! Oh, and guess what, all the Steam games I own can be shared with my family for free. Almost like, I hand them a disk. Buying digital games on a console is legitimately stupid. Consoles have wiped the libraries multiple times now. When a company no longer provides the product I want, I go to a better company. Colin thinking it isn't a loss for Sony and the people who are doing it are how I perceived him to mean are stupid; is peak ignorance on his part. If I am forced to pick digital games, why pick Sony? If what makes a console special keeps getting eroded, we aren't going to get them anymore. It is ok though. I will be able to sell Demon Souls remaster for 200 bucks + one day when Sony turns off the PS5 store and it's impossible to get it digitally anymore. Maybe I will sell it to Colin when he has to do some kind of work on it 15 years from now.
PCs are more expensive up front, but you are not paying yearly subscriptions to play online, your games are much cheaper, and your rig will be able to handle pretty much any game for the next long while. Not to mention you can do pretty much anything on a PC, even a gaming PC. I want to see someone file their taxes on a PS5. Once we start getting into $800-$1,000 range (which Sony seems really excited to do so), you should honestly just save up and buy a mid-range PC that will last you a good while. And yes, physical media tends to last longer because they cannot rip the game from your hard drive. We have already seen Sony do this several times already. If I buy digitally, it is usually because there is a sale and the game does not exist physically.
This argument is not as strong as you think it is. I own PC games from before the year 2000, most of which do not work on modern Windows or other computer OSes. I need to rely on emulation to get some games working. I still have a PS2, so my pre-2000 era games still work just fine. Nothing additional necessary. I also keep my old PCs, but before I started buying laptops for myself, I was relying on my parents' old PCs to play games. Because PS2 was relevant for like 12 to 14 or so years, I made it into adulthood to buy one, knowing it would run my old PS1 games, and it does. So, my PS2 was made in 2011 or something like that and is in excellent condition. I also got it new via retail for around $99 because it was very near the end of life. Those libraries can only be lost by theft or by some other tragedy. What happens if you offend Steam or after the company changes hands? You could lose your entire software library. Like I was saying, it's not as strong an argument as you thought.
Another difference regarding the the cell phone comparison is cell phone costs are now subsidized by the service providers. No one is paying MSRP on a new phone anymore because they get you to subscribe to their monthly cell plan in exchange for the phone. Maybe one day Sony will help pay for our consoles in exchange for subscribing to PS Plus.
What should scare people is the $1000 USD that people in Japan have to pay for the system. Sony knows that they have that market on lock. They have no problem saying you’re going to pay $300 more than someone else across the globe. It would be different if you had to ship these items in some difficult manner, but no this is Japan. You can get a PlayStation there no problem. You just have to pay big money for it because they know this is the only thing you want to buy anyway so why not get much money out of you as possible.
We have already seen sales sharply fall in Japan due to the price increases. Other places around the world are also easily near $1,000. This idea that the "console is not for you" is going to fall flat when the PS6 is priced similarly. Is it just going to be for the enthusiasts then too? How the hell is the common player going to be able to afford this thing when that is like a month's rent? The guys are really not looking towards the future and ignoring the obvious things Sony is trying to do.

I have no issue with an expensive ps5 pro but the fact they couldnt offer a sku that came with a disc player is beyond shooting themselves in the foot. What they are basically saying right now is: the people with the most money arnt collectors or care about physical media.

The Pro still won't be playing games in actual 4k btw. Maybe in some 30fps modes, but expect upscaled 1440p at best the majority of the time. It wasn't until I got a nice PC that I realized that console gamers pretty much have no clue what true 4k gaming looks like, they've essentially been lied to about it for years.
I play both PC and PS5 and as much as my PC is more powerful, games like TLOU 2 remaster, Demon Souls Remake and even Ps4 Pro version of Red Dead Redemption 2 look absolutly stunning to me. The difference isn't that big nowadays.

I’ve been playing it slowly with my girlfriend because Astro’s Playroom is her favorite game on PS5 lol so we only play it when we have that time together at night. And the spoilers have been rampant and frustrating even when I try to block keywords on social media.
People consider going from PS to PC because if your "high end" gaming is being forced into an all digital future then you might as well go with the most potent, open and consumer friendly ecosystem.
I for one will save up for a good rig instead of investing in the Pro because I'd have to pay the euro equivalent of >1000$ to get the Pro plus stand and disc drive (how is the disc drive 130€ in Europe??).
I will go base PS5 performance mode or PC for PS5 exclusives - depending on the length of the exclusivity window and my want to play asap and the Switch 2 will likely become my new "main" for physical media. There are numerous reasons why a disc drive is still essential - no internet dependency, backwards compatibility, ownership, more than one storefront etc. but please keep listing mtx/pc/mobile skewed statistics when the Insomniac leaks have already proven that physical makes up a big chunk of first party sales - about 60% iirc.

I do remember Colin critiquing the PS4 Pro citing how games are still the same as they were a decade prior gameplay wise, mechanics, etc... how better textures and what not are not fundamentally changing the way games are played.
Biomes have been a thing since Minecraft was in alpha and it isn't synonymous with "Levels" or "Stages", it just so happened that those words are interchangable for Returnal which is why that whole argument even started. Biomes in games mean the same thing as they mean in real life or science

Nintendo could literally create a cheaper, harder to hack and pirate console if they didn't use physical cartridges (they are largely the same as cartridges back in the day, just more flash memory). Eliminating the physical media component would save Nintendo a bunch of money, but alienate their younger audience who values the plug and play, hot swappable nature of a physical cart.
They chose to have that cost at the sake of keeping a younger audience as customers. We actually see the alternative solution with the Steam Deck.

Its the principal colin. At that price building a PC isn't far off, and far easier to stomach. I say that as a PC guy. There's 1000-dollar prebuilt systems out right now that match it, without the monthly cost of online multiplayer and cloud saves. With the benefit of multiple storefronts to push the price of games lower.
Consoles are supposed to be for the budget minded. at 700 minimum(no drive, no stand, and assuming you live in the US) going PC is now reasonable.
Who said they were supposed to be for budget minded? It might have been a reason one day for some people, but that's it. Plus PS5 pro is totally optional, it's not a PS6, standard PS5 is still the main console and it won't change.
I just can't justify paying $700 (more like $800+ with taxes, disc drive, and stand) for what was basically already promised but never delivered with the original PS5. Not to mention, there's still no games in sight! If this was releasing alongside a new huge AAA game then maybe I'd be enticed, but I'm definitely not paying that much just to see pixels in the backgrounds slightly sharper or to get fps boosts for PS4 games when the XSX does that no extra charge.

At this point, the PS5 Pro is for people with more money than sense, given that the PS5 has been hampered by extended PS4 cross-platform development. Software development will always favor the lowest common denominator, so even long term, the reality is that the Pro's potential will never be tapped before the PS6 releases. I don't think we've fully seen the base PS5 tapped in the same way as previous generations.
Also, Colin talks about the disc drive issue and pokes fun at people considering jumping to PC, where digital storefronts are the norm. Yet so far in this video, I've yet to hear anyone mention the latent annual cost of a PS+ membership in order to access parts of purchased games. That adds to the cost as well over time. So if people are looking at the future and seeing where digital storefronts are the norm, then it might make sense to go with the option that allows for more flexibility in customization, as well as prioritizing a platform that doesn't require an additional service that otherwise paywalls the full offerings of the game.
The disc drive issue also foreshadows what likely becomes the new norm for Sony going forward--upselling it as an optional accessory (or added cost) as opposed to prepackaging and selling multiple SKUs. They've done the same thing with the stand with the PS5 Pro. What's next for the PS6? No controller included?
The reality is that the market will decide these things when all is said and done. But it's hard not to see a reckoning coming, if larger and larger amounts of people are priced out of the market. As a longtime Sony supporter, they've lost the thread with me this generation, and I don't know if I'll even be moving forward with their next gen hardware.
But people get to make their own choices, based on how they perceive value. I guess we'll see what happens.

It's a luxury item and obviously it's not for students and low income people. Does it make sense? Probably not, but I have 2 dual sense edges that I got on launch (1 to play and 1 to charge while I'm playing) and if tommorow Sony would release Dual Sense Edges in new colors I'm quite certain I would buy 2 new ones in a hearbeat, they cost more then half a PS5 Pro.

The people who say they want to switch to PC (where physical media no longer exists) because the pro doesn’t come with a disc drive are completely justified because there’s a good chance their entire PS5 library is physical. The problem with this situation is that my entire library is physical so this new hardware is useless unless I want to pay the disc drive tax. Sure, but keep in mind that all of the examples you're describing were likely put into place specifically *because* games haven't kept up with the price of inflation. Companies discovered through market research that people weren't willing to pay more for base price videogames, so they found other ways to extract more value (with things like microtransactions, battle passes, etc)-and that appears to have worked, given the data on how many people spend money on those things (especially in otherwise F2P games). I'm not saying that's right, and in fact I basically agree with your point (or at least your implicit point, i.e. "I don't want to spend more money on stupid BS"); my preference would be to do away with all the nonsense upcharges/subscription models/etc and just have games be a little bit more expensive in exchange. But it's worth at least understanding the "why" of the whole phenomenon.
Given how bloated game budgets have become, I think these companies feel like they have to make their money SOMEwhere, and so they've chosen these smaller streams of revenue rather than an overall increase in price.
(The other solution, which I would love, would be for games to become cheaper to make-and I WOULD love that, because I'm a massive fan of smaller-budget indie titles and VNs and stuff like that-but that appears to be unlikely to happen anytime soon, unfortunately. All we can do in the meantime is vote with our wallets.)

A console without a disc drive solely relying on its digital marketplace is not the same as a PC without a disc drive. Preservation on PC is almost a non-issue, with platforms such as GOG where you can buy a game and have a backup, I don't have to worry about the service closing in 20 or so years. Console digital stores just vanish, just look at Nintendo, Microsoft or what Sony was planning to do with Vita/Ps3... The way Colin mocks people for wanting to play their PS4 in the future is totally out of touch. It would be wiser to advise people to buy physical games in times when licenses expire, games disappear, services go down, etc.

They're sharing their genuine opinions. They're not batting for anyone. They've criticized and shit on Sony just as much over the years. If you want a PS5 Pro takedown, there's plenty of places on the internet to find that. The Sacred boys always share their takes, good, bad, popular, or unpopular. It's been less than 4 years since the PS5 released, technology hasn't budged an inch, things that are more powerful cost more money. Been following colin for over a decade now and I must objectively share some criticism. Colin is becoming more and more out of touch of the realities of 99% of his audience and gamers in general. “No big deal” is wild to say about this price point, and no disc drive. The dig on going to PC where it has no physical media is so dumb to me. It is a clear misunderstanding on what value Steam provides and what value Sony provides. I have games I bought on steam 20 years ago that still work. I bought ps1 games on PS3 that I can't play on PS4 and PS5. One of the main value points Sony and other consoles provided was physical media, them going away from it means they have way less value. The digital library on PlayStation is worthless and will be reset in a console or two.
Oh, and guess what, those games I bought 20 years ago also work on a steam deck! Oh, and guess what, all the Steam games I own can be shared with my family for free. Almost like, I hand them a disk.
Buying digital games on a console is legitimately stupid. Consoles have wiped the libraries multiple times now. When a company no longer provides the product I want, I go to a better company. Colin thinking it isn't a loss for Sony and the people who are doing it are how I perceived him to mean are stupid; is peak ignorance on his part. If I am forced to pick digital games, why pick Sony?
If what makes a console special keeps getting eroded, we aren't going to get them anymore. It is ok though. I will be able to sell Demon Souls remaster for 200 bucks + one day when Sony turns off the PS5 store and it's impossible to get it digitally anymore. Maybe I will sell it to Colin when he has to do some kind of work on it 15 years from now.
PCs are more expensive up front, but you are not paying yearly subscriptions to play online, your games are much cheaper, and your rig will be able to handle pretty much any game for the next long while. Not to mention you can do pretty much anything on a PC, even a gaming PC. I want to see someone file their taxes on a PS5. Once we start getting into $800-$1,000 range (which Sony seems really excited to do so), you should honestly just save up and buy a mid-range PC that will last you a good while.
And yes, physical media tends to last longer because they cannot rip the game from your hard drive. We have already seen Sony do this several times already. If I buy digitally, it is usually because there is a sale and the game does not exist physically.
This argument is not as strong as you think it is. I own PC games from before the year 2000, most of which do not work on modern Windows or other computer OSes. I need to rely on emulation to get some games working.
I still have a PS2, so my pre-2000 era games still work just fine. Nothing additional necessary.
I also keep my old PCs, but before I started buying laptops for myself, I was relying on my parents' old PCs to play games.
Because PS2 was relevant for like 12 to 14 or so years, I made it into adulthood to buy one, knowing it would run my old PS1 games, and it does. So, my PS2 was made in 2011 or something like that and is in excellent condition. I also got it new via retail for around $99 because it was very near the end of life. Those libraries can only be lost by theft or by some other tragedy.
What happens if you offend Steam or after the company changes hands? You could lose your entire software library.

Another difference regarding the the cell phone comparison is cell phone costs are now subsidized by the service providers. No one is paying MSRP on a new phone anymore because they get you to subscribe to their monthly cell plan in exchange for the phone. Maybe one day Sony will help pay for our consoles in exchange for subscribing to PS Plus.
Making a "pro" device for your most hardcore fans and then removing features is ridiculous and sony deserves all the shit they're getting for that.
Why do they never bring up that 65% of first party Sony sales are physical?
What should scare people is the $1000 USD that people in Japan have to pay for the system. Sony knows that they have that market on lock. They have no problem saying you’re going to pay $300 more than someone else across the globe. It would be different if you had to ship these items in some difficult manner, but no this is Japan. You can get a PlayStation there no problem. You just have to pay big money for it because they know this is the only thing you want to buy anyway so why not get much money out of you as possible.
We have already seen sales sharply fall in Japan due to the price increases. Other places around the world are also easily near $1,000. This idea that the "console is not for you" is going to fall flat when the PS6 is priced similarly. Is it just going to be for the enthusiasts then too? How the hell is the common player going to be able to afford this thing when that is like a month's rent? The guys are really not looking towards the future and ignoring the obvious things Sony is trying to do.

They will get the message and they will either lower the price or bundle something (a game or an extra controller, or hey even a damn disc drive).
Tbh I think that price point just signals that they've ceded the entire market to Nintendo. People like to pretend they somehow exist in different universes but these are both devices whose primary purpose is to play games
I have no issue with an expensive ps5 pro but the fact they couldnt offer a sku that came with a disc player is beyond shooting themselves in the foot. What they are basically saying right now is: the people with the most money arnt collectors or care about physical media.
No they are acknowledging that about 85% of all games sold on PlayStation are digital.

The Pro still won't be playing games in actual 4k btw. Maybe in some 30fps modes, but expect upscaled 1440p at best the majority of the time.
It wasn't until I got a nice PC that I realized that console gamers pretty much have no clue what true 4k gaming looks like, they've essentially been lied to about it for years.

I play both PC and PS5 and as much as my PC is more powerful, games like TLOU 2 remaster, Demon Souls Remake and even Ps4 Pro version of Red Dead Redemption 2 look absolutly stunning to me. The difference isn't that big nowadays.
