Correct! There was a First Class customer lounge at London St. Pancras Station (and also East Midlands Parkway, Nottingham and Sheffield) where passengers could enjoy complimentary hot drinks, snacks and newspapers until the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. The First Class lounges then closed as a temporary measure, for the duration of the pandemic, after which they were going to re-open. Guess what? Four years later and the said First Class customer lounges are still closed! Someone has been telling a load of porkie pies! I can remember when Midland Mainline held the franchise to operate passenger trains between London and Nottingham/Sheffield, when if you travelled First Class you got a glass of complimentary wine, served at your seat, after every station stop!
I can’t wait to see the new Class 810 Aurora IETs coming into service from next year. I really do like London St. Pancras International station and I also like EMR Class 360 Desiro that have been transferred from Greater Anglia.
That Saturday it was Chesterfield playing at home against Morecambe fans. Pretty much football season now so Saturdays and the occasional weekday trains will be packed. The first class section that you was in, wasn't that bad compared to standard class. Literally standard would have been completely rammed. I remember years ago that EMR but mostly EMT would have put on extra trains for football fans only. However post-covid government took over running the railway and controlled the purse strings so stock that could have been used for football trains (HSTs/180's) were withdrawn with no replacements provided. Even the current 222's are struggling as they are having to work more compared to pre-covid times.
there was problems with the clarity of the windows on that side of the train last time i traveled on first class aswell . They seem unable to clean it.IT looks like the same seat i was in as that is the only window in the carriage that is like this
To me, the Midland Mainline feels like the most "unloved" of the major trunk routes out of London. Slow to electrify, often overcrowded and by far, not the most glamorous... EMR's First Class service has been eroded over the years, but in the rare occasion that you can nab a ticket in 1st for a few quid more, why wouldn't you? I think the new Class 810s will hopefully bring some improvements, even if standard class is more than reasonable for the 2 hour or so trip from Sheffield/Nottingham to London. I feel that the MML holds some great potential for use by open access operators to destinations further affield. Perhaps a new open access operator could re-instate a service between St-Pancras to Leeds via Sheffield to provide some competition for LNER using soon to be displaced Class 222s?
@@thisis_mudchute It seems a little wasteful to spec bi-mode trains when it was originally planned to have full electrification... I doubt the Chiltern Mainline will even get wires for the whole route in my lifetime!
@ i dont know if you mean 'it would have better to electrify the whole thing snd get electric-only trains', but if you do, then you are correct, but also a diesel engine is good for emergencies
can you get firsr class on emr intercity if only travelling to luton airport pkwy? i mean im too broke to buy standard class anyway- id only recommend first class if it genuinely feels different (this doesn't mean more comfortable, just different) and if there are first class lounges at either end, which seems to only apply to avanti (but for avanti, standard oremium is better), or if it is declassified
I would say that East Midlands Railway is quite the worth of money just like other train operators. And from next year EMR will be introducing the new Class 810 Aurora AT300s that is replacing the Class 222 Meridian DEMU. And the Class 360/1 Desiro in EMR livery do look really nice since they have been transferred from Greater Anglia.
The noise and vibration from the underfloor Diesel engines is incessant and intrusive and you can't get away from it. Which is why I much preferred the InterCity 125 trainsets, where the locomotives/power cars were at each end of the consist, well away from the passenger carriages.
Hey. The seat looks alright and the sheer speedy journey time to Leicester is impressive, but otherwise I’d be disappointed with this experience. The refreshments all served in throwaway disposable packaging❌😷is not a First Class standard. And then the grubby dull windows - as well as your view being restricted anyway. After the carriage becoming overcrowded by football fans, I’d be so done🙅🏻♂️with it lol, and would be sending a complaint to EMR about their standards.
It's very rare that the windows on EMR's Class 222 Meridian Inter-City trainsets are clean enough to see out of! Usually they are so heavily encrusted with grime that it's difficult to see the huge airship sheds at Cardington, the British Gypsum mine at Sileby, or Sir Thomas Tresham's treasonable Triangular Lodge at Desborough through the windows as you pass by en route to Nottingham or Sheffield!
One sandwich or wrap in First Class on a weekday plus a couple of cups of tea or coffee, a bottle of mineral water and a few traybakes or flapjacks is hardly anything to write home about! EMR's First Class complimentary offer is almost as bad as First Geat Western's, and that's saying a lot!

What? EMR took over from EMT. Franchise runs to 2027. HSTs life expired a decade ago. More (high capacity) trains on order.

It’s the northern purple train .. it’s got to see the inside still screams emt but good as always

Sadly still limited to 5-car units.
Yep.
They need to clean the train window
staying in standard class on a 222 is the fastest way to get asthma or bronchitis

I'll take the bacon & egg all day long ain't wasting my time going vegan on a train LOOOOOOOOL By the way cracking video
i cant eat bacon for religious reasons but vegan food is normally horrible, what do i choose 😭
Weekend first class aren't worth it as the menu is basic and the menu is served all day, much better first class on a weekday

Hull Trains has asked regulator ORR if it can run Sheffield-KingsCross to compete with EMR. The latter surely needs a rival to raise standards.
