I have such GREAT memories of this ride, I am so old I remember the coupon booklets and this one was a FREE ride and got you off your feet for a few minutes and brought you through cool and wonderful air conditioning. This ride is the reason why I have always loved the Caribbean and the cultures of the islands. The "Airport announcer" was just fantastic telling you to board flight X to go experience the ancient pyramids of Mexico etc. Love it. I hope Defunctland does a full story on this old ride.
It's from the land of yesteryear, when flying was a luxury experience. On the one hand, we could not afford it then, but on the other hand, it came without the threat of a full cavity search.
This was such an earworm. I remember going on this attraction when we visited WDW for the first time circa 1975 and having "If you had wings, had wings, had wings..." going through my head for DAYS after.
I still remember that ride from my first trip to WDW in 1980. Then, in November of 2023, I heard Frank Borman passed and I immediately knew that he was President of Eastern Airlines, then. Not to mention, he was one of our former Astronauts. I miss Eastern Airlines, and I am not thrilled with many of the changes that transpired over the past 3 decades. So it's nice to listen to this song, after such a long time. Thanks for sharing.
as a an aviation guy i loved seeing the outline of all those 1011s zipping by on the screen, flew on Eastern so many times as a guy from New England. great memories of days long ago
This is actually the demo tape recording made before the attraction was built. The actual orchestral and vocal tracks (save the New Orleans segment) for the ride remain frustratingly unavailable (thanks to the fact that Disney archivists put a higher premium on California than Florida sadly)
It isn't. The opening chorus is similar but it had a full orchestral backing and Pete Renoudet's voice is only heard in the New Orleans section (where again we had full orchestral backing).
That would depend on whether or not you experienced the ride in person and I can attest that the ride's enjoyment derived from the fact that there was a fascinating blend of the various tracks as you went from one section to another. They were fuller tracks individually this but the blend and cross-blending in perfect synch was what made the original ride experience so fascinating. This demo recording while interesting is next to nothing in terms of conveying what the ride experience was like.
It was one of the free attractions. Sad we had to choose back in the day. Never got to go on 20,000 leagues or the tree house. Does anyone have the soundtrack to the Peter Pan ride when it opened up for the first time? Thanks!
20,000 Leagues was one of my favorites. I remember being young enough that I actually thought we were going out into the Gulf of Mexico. Even then, though, the Tree House did not do much for me. I had seen more of those in real life -- giant squid, not so much.

No one else probably noticed, but who calls vacation flights "cruises" anymore, it's now restricted to boats... Airplanes are about the destinations, while cruises are about a combination of destinations and the ship itself.
No, that's correct. June 1, 1987 was the last day the ride was "If You Had Wings" (the last day of Eastern's contract as the official airline of WDW) and the "If You Could Fly" makeover (a temporary stopgap done because Delta's contract had begun and they weren't going to pay the freight for a ride that had any references to Eastern) is for a lot of people as different a ride as the various version of Journey Into Imagination because the song was what made IYHW distinctive.

William Holderby and we rode it over and over!!!
Yesterworld briefly mentioned it in their recent Buzz Lightyear video.
@ im pretty sure they still stalk about the attraction (im not sure i forgot)

Damn, Buddy Baker went so hard on this track!

RIP Peter Renaday 9/08/2024. Disney great. The "voice" of If You Had Wings, featured as your announcer and the male singing voice.
One of my favorite rides!
I didn’t know this tune in Tomorrowland had such a rich origin! How delightful! Thank you for sharing this nugget of Disney history! God bless!💕✝️

Best Ride Ever !
I used to love this ride!

epaddon sounds like the ride music to me with the exception of a few things (like the people you see in the scenes on ride when they talk)
@@ENTERTAINMENT35 It's close enough. For some purposes, this is a lot better than noisy in-ride home recordings.

Such beautiful memories. The audio transports me right back.
I always listen to this before I go on a cruise and swim in cool Caribbean lagoons.

I love you!

This is the most 70s thing I've ever heard
Dreamfinder-You say from June 5, 1972 to June 1, 1987, That is wrong On January 4, 1989, If You Could Fly was permanently closed.
mikey p Thanks for the correction. I got my information from a now defunct Disney website.
