  • The 1978 squarebody GMC crew cab gets a front clip swap from our 1986 work truck. The '78 front clip is rusty and the hood is disintegrating, so this is the cheapest option for a nice front without spending money.

Great job! Your gaps are fine. When these were new, they didn't all have Cadillac-perfect gaps, as they were made to be work vehicles, not prestige vehicles. I did the opposite, put the 70s front clip on the 80s cab that I swapped onto my 73 frame. As you see, either bumper looks fine with either front end, but if you really want to swap the 70s bumper to the 80s frame, you need to get an extra pair of lower mounts, position them on the lower flange of the rail and drill the needed holes, and bend them outward until they mate properly to the bumper. All the rest of the stock 70s hardware works fine. Can't remember if you have to do any drilling. To put the 80s bumper on the 70s frame, you have to cut off that part of the rail that forms the lower bumper mount and use the 80s mount that has holes for both upper and lower mounts. Non-squarebody people will never notice the difference.

I like the look of early front ends also (they are growing on me) but given the option between the two that I have it had to go to the one that was more solid. If I had money I would have just replaced all the blown out panels but….. sometimes you just have to use what you have.

This is how I see it... a guy can build his truck any way that suits his needs... if filling with bonds works for you I am all for it... as long as you don't plan on selling to some poor unsuspecting person. As long as you are happy, I am good with it

Don’t worry it will be driven into the ground long before it gets sold…. This truck will probably be in the background of many videos to come so we can all watch together as the bondo slowly fails :)

I’m wanting to swap an 80s front clip to my 74 just like yours were the wiper blades able to line up with the 80s cowl I need to keep my wipers so I’m iffy on the swap

The arms and blades appear to be interchangeable. It’s the longer/shorter drive shafts that the arms mount to protruding out of the cowl that’s important. As long as you switch the drive assembly it works. The old ones have to be short to fit under the hood, and the newer ones have to be long enough to stick through the cowl. Those aren’t interchangeable. The right one has to be used with the right hood/cowl.

Did you have any issues going either way with the radiator support to frame holes not lining up?

Nope. They interchanged without any issues whatsoever.

How did you deal with the rear portion of the hood hinges. Im doing the same swap and I am struggling to get it to fit right. Thank you in advance for any advice

I measured the position and holes on the newer truck and transferred them over to the older truck using points of reference they both have like existing bolts and edges.

That video is coming. I am not sure when it will be released, but it is much easier to go that way then it is to put a newer clip on an older truck.

How did you bolt on the cowl panel?

    • @wrenchwranglers

Everything is the same in the locations where it screw in except the holes for the screws. It only needs drilled at the proper locations and then it screws right on.
