We document our journeys and struggles in the world of mechanical maintenance and restoration. Come along with us as we work on classic cars, old trucks, tractors; pretty much anything that catches our eyes. Using our unique blend of lack of money, too much time, and not enough patience, we troubleshoot and repair a myriad of projects that most likely other people have been too sane to tackle.
1978 GMC electric fuel pump conversion
Our 1978 GMC crew cab squarebody has a wiped fuel pump camshaft drive lobe. With no money or time to do it right, what sort of janky solutions can we come up with on short notice to get this thing reliably (sort of?) back on the road?

Been saying this for 20 years lol. I've been building tall deck 427's into 9.8:1 and 10.5:1 454 tall decks. Using the p nut port heads and intake with a 6.535 rod and a 1.645 and 1.65 compression height 4.25 pistons. You get 345hp and almost 600tq. 345hp @3800 and 600tq @1800 for 9.8:1. 365hp @3200 and 650tq @1800 for 10.5:1.
Looks good sir! Thank you for the motivation to do my 1985 suburban. 😊
Thanks!
Can’t believe you didn’t include me in the video😂
Your time is coming, young padawan.
Did you ever clean the channels where the rollers go....and do you not like taking the window out? Would like to have seen that. But I liked it anyways. Thanks
@@JonP-j6o I usually clean them and put a little axle grease around the track to prevent rust. Water that gets past the felts can collect on the tracks along with condensation and over time even the galvanization corrodes. I like to at least try to prevent that, even though the nylon rollers will move it around and displace the grease, at least the less used sections stay protected. I usually don’t pull the glass out unless I have to, as it’s just one more step and not really necessary unless the track is damaged. I have shown that on other square body videos.
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!!!
I've replaced the entire thing for the front and back ac cover I've purchased them online and I went with LED bulbs. I'm restoring my 1985 gmc sierra classic C1500 Suburban. ACME and OC Carpets sales ABS plastic headliners I purchased one.
Very good video. I wasn't sure if you could keep my attention for the 46 minutes but you sure did! I have that exact same mower and I have no issues yet (3 months old only) but if I do I can start looking at your video now. Thank you!
I want to do the opposite. I want to put a 1980 front clip on my 1985 C30.
@@Chuck_S there is also a video of that on our channel. It is a similar process.
I love your videos, how do you get the wiring diagrams on your phone?
In this case it wasn’t anything special, just screen shots from .pdf manuals.
@@wrenchwranglers thanks, was just wondering how you had a picture of that plug.
It's mice nit squirrels chewing up the wires.
I would have leaned toward mice, and it could have very well been, except I lean toward squirrels because of where it was parked, and the original owner told me he figured squirrels because he saw them. Other than that, yes I would have said mice also.
Hi. Great video. I have a question. I have a 1986 Suburban. I want to add the grab handles to mine to help the misses get in. You mentioned you have seen a lot of burbs with or without the grab handles. I believe they might have started like 88/89 with them. Do you know if the earlier models have the threaded portion already installed? I can pull the trim to see but thought I’d look and ask question on the webs first. Thanks.
@@anthnmnt it was an option, I believe. They had them earlier, but unless the option was selected for the build process it won’t have the threaded inserts. That would be something you have to add.
@@wrenchwranglers thanks. I looked at the option sheet for 86 and didn’t see it there. I had a 72 c20 truck and it only had lap belts. However there was a thread insert for A three point belt already pre is installed. Wasn’t sure if it was the same way with the suburbans. I’ll probably pull the trim off to see if I can feel around for the thread inserts.
@@anthnmntthe belts are sort of different because of the federal regulations; there was implementation around 72-73 requiring shoulder belts in the front and so at some point they started adding the threads for those, but the actual belts didn’t catch up until later. I assume they probably exhausted their supply chain of lap belts before the full transition. Since the grab handles are not federally mandated those inserts should only be there if the RPO was specified for them.
@@wrenchwranglersmakes sense. Thanks for the knowledge.
@@wrenchwranglersI did some looking and there seems to be two bolts about ten inches apart above the passenger side door. I would assume for the grab handle. :)
What was the finger height on clutch?
It’s been so long that I honestly don’t remember, sorry. The old one was worn so I doubt it would have been a good reference and I never measured the new one.
I bought new injectors for my D1105 and it ran perfectly. Aftermarket too. Nice job troubleshooting it.
Only 25k! That’s not bad at all. My older friend has a ‘57 sitting in his garage with a fresh stroker motor. He’s asking 5k. Body needs some work though. Might pick it up as a project piece
it would be better to put two 48w projectors in front for more lighting
I need to revise the whole front lighting. For a standard tractor, these light positions and styles work ok. But with the loader I’m constantly damaging them or snagging them. At some point I will be doing a light revision. I’d like to mount some work lights on the cab since I’ve added it.
Thank you so much brother somebody had the wrong belt system on my car and the water pump was turning backwards and causing it to overheat. Thank you so much for this video. God bless you 🙏❤️
Great Vidya! Always enjoy your content.
Thank you for this. I was curious about the internal components in an A6 and it's alternative, & your video was very informative. I have one in my '78 El Camino that needs help, and now I can make a "more informed decision" on a replacement.
A big thanks from the Silvernale family in New Orleans. You saved us alot of money and time. You're the man brotha.😎
Can u do brakes on 310ine don't work
The brake bands are accessed through a cover on top of each axle. I was going to do a video on brakes, however the bolts that hold my covers on are rusted solid and require some in depth work to extract. Maybe down the road, but right now it’s a very long project in my case.
Your review helped. I'm considering the ABN for my bad ac bearing that's making my truck sound like an ambulance siren. It's the only video I found on it, was definitely helpful to understand the product. Thanks for sharing
They work well for a few uses for sure…. Beyond that they start to deteriorate. If you go slow and careful and take care of them they do last longer, but defects like the thread strength are hard to work around long term
So the mower did turn over. Here ya'll thought the connecting rod had come loose and it was just a loose bolt falling into the starter starting cog. Very very lucky. No lack of luck here boyo. She sounds great. The oil smoke was pre lubrication shenanigans.
I never get that lucky….. Used enough luck for a years worth of projects on this one lol
Great video. Very informative
tough crude tractors made to run in the wilds of Siberia where the are no parts or mechanics closer than a 2 or 3 day drive. lots were imported in the 80's after Reagan made trade negations with USSR. the liquid cooled tractors are tough beasts. the air cooled engine is copied design of Deutz . the only injector pump that can be rebuilt by the average farmer with mechanical ability
🔥🔥🔥
Do you have to have the ratio adapter or can you go right to trans?
@@dougstrucksnstuff you can plug the ratio adapter inline anywhere between two points, except it can’t go right on the back of the speedometer. Between any other cables or right into the trans is fine. Or you could use a direct cable with no adapter and pull the gears out of the trans for the speedometer takeoff and change them, but that’s a little more involved.
Change your fuel injectors and more importantly your fuel injector wiring connectors and you’ll see a huge improvement in throttle and power
I have a tall deck Mk IV in my 71 Chevelle convertible. 30 over 454 w/ 1/4" stroke, 489 C.I.D. / 8.0 Liters. Lightened, internally balanced Crower crank, long Crower rods, custom JE pistons, 10.28:1 CR. World Merlin heads w/ biggest valves possible. Ture roller valvetrain w/ custom ground cam. Offy IR intake w/ tall deck intake spacers, twin 1150 dominators w/ non-progressive linkage (works like 8 one-barrel carbs). Estimated 688 HP on pump gas, no turbo, no nitrous, no blower.
My grandfather just passed. We have had a 84 in the family since my mom was a kid. It’s fully restored and my family was planning to sell it because it wasn’t willed to anyone. I’ve decided to buy it. Too much time, money, and effort into the car for me to watch them let it go so now I’m here learning about the platform.
Thanks for watching! There’s more information about the 5th gen El Camino platform on our website here: www.tradecraftspecialties.com/5thGenElky
@@Shakan_not_Stirred hey dude just bought my grandpas 84 today!
Nice bro. Still waiting for the estate stuff to clear up on mine but I’ve been driving out that way working on it. No one knows how long it sat, but Ive found a brand new 383 stroker and aftermarket shocks and a few other goodies on it. Started the other day with some fresh gas but won’t stay at idle. Next step I think is take off and clean the carb. I grew up with in imports so old school sbc is completely new to me. I hope yours is bringing you as much connection with your grandfather as his is to me
Can I convert a 86 gmc 3500 to a 86 Chevy 3500 If it’s the same process can I just swap an 86 gmc front end and bed with a 66 Chevy truck front end and bed I know nothing is impossible but how hard would it really be?
@@JustinHutchinson-p3y GMC to Chevy in the same year is pretty simple…. Pretty much just the grill is different, and the logos. Other than that it’s all the same. A 86 to 66 swap would be pretty involved….. the cab and the mounting points would all be different, and different dimensions as well, as well as body lines between cab/doors and fenders. Possible, but pretty difficult.
No indicators to even touch the IP, or the timing. If it starts right. Doesn't smoke. Doesn't have excessive timing rattle. Leave it be. Especially for an over heat complaint.
That is what the previous mechanics thought also. They were also wrong. Although I find it acceptable to make some initial assumptions for a working hypothesis in a troubleshooting approach, assumptions during actual troubleshooting can result in wasted time and an unhappy customer. People come to me for results, and I try to deliver a data-based and unbiased approach based on knowledge and facts without too many assumptions.
Great video, I really enjoyed it. I've got a 78 Caprice that still has the entire original system. I'd like to upgrade to a parallel condenser as I understand that can make a huge difference using R134. There is a company in Michigan (Alma Products) that still makes new A6 compressors that look like the originals! I'd like to go with that rather than updating to the aluminum one.
I would definitely go with the original A6 design if you can afford it. It’s a beefier and much more well designed unit. The aluminum units basically sacrifice all the advantages for weight reduction and parts reduction, and have no internal oil pump or separate reservoir. I’m curious how this aluminum unit will hold up. I have seen people like them when new, but haven’t found any long term reviews.
@@wrenchwranglers how much was the aluminum one? I think the new Alma ones can be had for about 500 bucks.
I think this one was about $300-ish
You have very infotainment videos. Keep up the work. I have a compact john deere that needs a complete wiring harness. Do to a fire I just wish I had your ability and understanding to repair it.
Well…. you can always do what I do….. pretend you know what you’re doing and then do a ton of editing to make it look like expertise lol
A 350 uses a 4 inch piston as well.
Great job on the second mower to sir
Thanks 👍
Hey sir try adjusting the valves
You got her going didn’t you sir great job
That was a great DIY tutorial and it looks really good! My suburban has the rear air unit. Have you ever done one like? If so, it is much different?
Thanks! No, I’ve never actually owned a suburban with rear air because it just adds more complications that I need to fix lol…. I’m not sure how different it is. I would guess the headliner goes around the air unit so the shape and trim is different there, probably other than that I would guess it’s similar.
The rear ac cover is what's holding the rear cover up but the rest of the trim is the same. As this guys suburban I've cleaned and painted my interior had the dashboard. Wrapped in vinyl I replaced all of the door hardware pull straps and and the chrome trim for the dashboard. Classic Industries has the arm rest pads.
@@wrenchwranglersOnly differences in a non ac and a rear ac square body. Is the unit and a cutout of the headliner for the rear unit that's it I replaced mine. With a ABS plastic headliner.
Does the long water pump ever come in a reverse flow? I just replaced a water pump and I noticed a arrow in the casting pointing OUT at the water inlet from the lower radiator hose location. I didn't pay it any attention at the time but now it gets warmer/ hot and doesn't seem right. How do I find out?
I haven’t seen any for Chevy small blocks but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. The issue with that is usually radiators work best by putting hot water in the top and cooling as it falls through radiator. This helps work with convection the way the old model T’s worked with no water pump at all. The water naturally wants to move that way so it’s easier to pump it that way. Pumping it backwards and up through the radiator would make the pump work harder for several reasons so it isn’t sound from an engineering standpoint.
alternator is drain i bet i havent watched yet weld a washer on the bolt then a nut to washer you get better penitration on welding that way
I see a lot of channels doing reviews on things that they just took out of the box to me that is not a good review
I’m trying to decide if that’s a dig because I didn’t use it enough and show it in action, or a compliment because I actually used it….
It's similar to the one he's had for years just slightly different, basically the same. He reviewed it well, explained the product. Him actually using it is besides the point
that jack is same as harbor freight Pittsburgh. Anyway.. about to do same thing but only transfer case... Can one spin the turn handle off and red locktight it? Same for the nut at end of all thread. can the bar stock with hole it it that the allthread goes into come out for access to the weld around top of that fat pin? I dont have hole saw or a saber saw...... got figure out a way to grind that inner weld off (have grinder- but maybe that will have not fit in there to grind the weld out anyway... The old shoulders of mine can not just heave how a T-case into place... let go of one hand and thread something w/out it dropping on my empty-ish cranium or ribs lol. Granted cEventually someone will smell it and come drag away my meat and bones if I tried.
@@coachgeo, I did go over some of this in the sequel to this video, where I pulled a 4x4 trans and transfer case with this. I ran a roll pin through the handle and I think used a jam nut on the lower end. I pulled the trans and transfer case as one assembly, but if one were pulling just the transfer case I think it would work ok, and at least make sure the neighbors don’t have to put up with a bad smell before emergency services discovers you. As fas as getting in there to the weld, the parts that need to come off to access it don’t really come off. A dremel might fit in there, or a long grinding attachment on a drill. Might take a while, but it could work.
@@wrenchwranglers yes I saw it.... I dont have tooling to put in a roll pin or use the jig nor a saber saw... hence my questions above. Sorry for not being clear on that. drat on those parts not coming off... figured there was method to your madness on why you didn't go that route yourself
@@wrenchwranglers now that I think about it.... will explore, after cutting off the post- just drilling a hole in each corner for bolts and nut/bolt it on. No messing with trying to get that center out. maybe will need thread the holes drilled into the bracket Jack's pad threads into.
@@coachgeo that could work. You’ll lose the ability to spin the top relative to the jack below it, but for lightweight uses that should work ok.
@@wrenchwranglers good point.
One thing about the ac controls, the vent direction could really be nice to have at least "Defrost" then "person" even if its just a toggle, if im on my feet only, but i need defrost, nice if this one button could then send it to defrost/feet and then unselecting it would send it back to either feet or "bilevel" I know it has a defroster button but my gma likes bilevel on her jeep which is atricious for vent flow, even on high, so i like ONLY vents to my face, no floor, and having to go through screen layers to do this one thing is so annoying. On trucks I like floor or bilevel vent if no AC, vent only if AC
Front brake is 90 not 70 % of your braking power once u r on something bigger n faster.
How loose do you want your blees nipples? : yes.
Idle way too high.
@@JoeRocket-sf6qs it is indeed. However if I set it lower it stalls intermittently. I played with it for about half an hour I didn’t show on camera because it would have been even more boring, but in this cheap carb there’s just no way around it apparently.
hi, great video ...is there a gasket between the timing cover and the block?
@@motorcycle_garage yes there is
Interesting stuff. Lots of grain trucks around here so finding one of these should be easy. One thing though; Changing rod length and piston height do not change cubic inches. Only changing the bore and the crankshaft stroke changes engine size. Good information otherwise!
That is a good point; I neglected to mention that those changes usually are accompanied by a 454 crankshaft. Obviously changing the rod and pistons don’t serve much purpose without that unless the goal is to only lighten the rotating assembly.
I have a '71 SS454, T400, 12 bolt 4.10 Posi. Even though I also have a Duramax 2500, I use the Elco to tow my smaller trailers a lot. I'm prepping to do some drag and drive events too and am building a trailer dedicating to doing those events.
Love to see them out and about! Even my old rig gets a lot of comments and thumbs up on a daily basis.
I drive a 1996 ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.9 magnum done away with the one piece front wheel bearings converted to manual lockout hubs and slerviceable bearings done away with the two piece intake and put a solid intake on it been driving it 11 years now and still doing good 370 thousand and some change in miles I originally gave 1200 dollars for to date have about 3400 in it but worth every penny
I love the older trucks. Some people don’t like the 94-up rams but I’ve owned a few and driven some for work and they held their own when maintained properly. Keep the old ones on the road!
