We document our journeys and struggles in the world of mechanical maintenance and restoration. Come along with us as we work on classic cars, old trucks, tractors; pretty much anything that catches our eyes. Using our unique blend of lack of money, too much time, and not enough patience, we troubleshoot and repair a myriad of projects that most likely other people have been too sane to tackle.
1975 stepside diesel wiring -- part 12 of series
In this installment as part 12 of our 1975 Chevy diesel stepside project, we tackle the wiring. We get all the wiring in place and the major landmarks accomplished. The second half will deal with resolving some functionality issues with parts we installed.

What did this Isuzu 6BB1 diesel engine come out of originally?

We need your help! This Isuzu 6BB1 diesel was installed in this truck in approximately 1990-ish as a newer engine. We thought we could get all the parts that might be necessary just based on the basic information, but that has proven to not be the case. Parts suppliers do not want to work with us to locate the proper parts, or offer warranties without the proper vehicle information. So... we ne...

Does anyone by chance have a diagram of where the bolts will go for the timing cover?
Looking forward to the new year!
We had one back when i was little only 2 issues out of it, one being no breaks, two was the ptos output was WAY to high, it blew the seals like 4 times
Yeah I wish my brakes worked better too. I need to adjust them but I’m putting it off. Just gotta stomp the pedal REALLY hard lol. But having worked on a lot of farm equipment, brakes on old tractors are mostly neglected and rarely work anyway.
Great to see your hard work- Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Hope you have the motorcycle running for summer fun. Love the tractor and pickup projects...
Good Information Thanks!
Looking forward to a new year of projects.
Merry Christmas to you
Probably a tilt cab
Yes I agree, it could certainly be out of a tilt cab. Unfortunately I have not yet discovered one that was imported and sold in North America that would have been equipped with this engine. Many tilt cabs sold overseas with this engine. Not so much in North America though.
It may have come from a late model International Scout They were sold with Isuzu diesel engines
I think (I could be wrong) the diesel that the scout used was a 6 cylinder Nissan. I’m not sure that this engine would physically fit in a scout. I’m thinking those are the SD33 and the last year, the SD33T? But I could be wrong.
Scouts came with Nissan Diesels
Appreciate all your hard work on this project. You will end up with a nice truck.
Thanks! Feels like it’s getting close!
My Dad transplanted an inline 6 diesel into a Ford pickup in the early 80's. It was either an Isuzu or Mitsubishi, turned out it didn't have enough power, so he installed a turbo. Shortly thereafter it threw a rod out the block. I have no idea where the engine came from, but it was a brand new, complete engine with alternator, starter and vacuum pump. Ironically, he ended up putting a 390 back in to salvage the pickup.
This one may not have enough power either….. we will see. Maybe why it was parked 32 years ago and never driven. But I won’t turbo it for the reason you mentioned…. These aren’t equipped with the needed extra internal features for that. I would change the gearing for that adventure if that proves to be the case. I feel like this was kind of the same situation as you mentioned; I feel like this was bought new and complete and dropped in. But I can’t discover where people back then were getting them.
Been working on this 95 taco and if it will start it will run til it sounds like it runs out of gas I'm about to leave since I've watched this video. Hopefully that works but it's not. I appreciate all the info that you have been and so it's dumping. I think it's flooding out too because it's rich in gas pins after you crank it
Years ago....dealing with Cummins and Cat Truck engines...an ARRAINGMENT number was needed....I expect ur Isuzu has something similar. Sometimes digging up an old timer technician or parts guy at a Diesel focused shop can become a valuable asset...It might cost you lunch, or a couple cold snacks....wobble pops....if anything, ya might make a new friend...
Check wiring on tranny
This was very helpful!! Are you able to tell me where exactly the hydraulic tank fill point is?? We blew a line.. which we replaced…but now need to top up the hyd system and can’t for the life of us figure out where to add the fluid too 🤷♀️
If you stand behind it and look on the top right of the transmission/axle, you’ll see a cap with a wrench fitting on top. Spin that out and the fill is there. Some have a dipstick behind the cap, but I just top it off with hydraulics relaxed. It’s kind of under the cab part, between the trans and the metal under the seat. Hard to get a proper funnel in unless it’s angled.
My Isuzu engin my Link-belt FMC has 3 heads valve covers, I think but the engine of your might have came in link-Belts FMC 1980 year modal, none turbo, I put GM 100 amp alternators now my link -Belt was a 24 volt machine.BigAl California
@@alkennedy1124 they did put some of these in link belts, but they were indeed 24v. This is definitely a factory 12v. It had the factory starter and alternator on it when I got it. Which also makes me think it’s not out of a piece of equipment. I neglected to mention the voltage in the video.
My excavator, has a air pump too, it is for pushing hydraulic fluid I tell me 5 or 6 inch return line, it’s a2800A 43000 pounds I think, up stack, none turbo, the smaller Zuzu trucks 1980s or whatever have similar engines as yours, but I’m not much help, lol BigAl California thanks
The little clips at the end of the shaft that holds the linkage on. Can you buy that with out the shaft?
@@1siggycrs I am not sure. I could not find any sold individually but a parts dealer might have some or be able to locate some.
My brother u need to spray the undercarriage with FLUID FILM to kill the RUST.and paint the gas tank to make it look nice
Thanks Wrench wrangler, skimming those VVTI heads and block rarely brings functional success, what happens the timing is normally thrown out the engine never runs right specifically on those Toyota VVTI engines,
it drives like a car and easy to work on the engine - GO GET ONE 1987 is best
Where are from
@@GregorioCarreno-v7z we are in north-eastern Florida.
Crank suggest it runs a double row roller timing chain, I was under the impression these tall decks had a gear driven cam (pretty sure I've seen a 366 with such)
@@michellatour150 Only the first few in 1966, maybe 1967 and 68 depending on how many they had left at that point, had gear driven cams that had a special cut because they run backwards from standard big block cams.
That's a nice Camino you have.
Thanks! It’s not only fun to drive, but dependable and a great daily driver. It’s not perfect so I don’t get nervous about driving it all the time. Everywhere I go it gets comments and thumbs up just because it’s unique. Other than my work truck, it’s been my main driver for several years now and it’s one of the best cars (trucks?) I’ve ever owned hands down
Years ago in the early 2000's, I had a 1979 EL_Camino with a 305 and 4 Speed Saginaw Transmission in the car. I wish I still had the car. I don't have pictures of the car before I sold it. I do have pictures of the car when I first got the car. I have to look for the pictures.
You will have to lower the frame brackets for core support .. they're not the same
I'm really enjoying your channel!
Thank you so much!
super helpful video
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
Good work! Merry Christmas!
Thanks! And Merry Christmas to you also
Been saying this for 20 years lol. I've been building tall deck 427's into 9.8:1 and 10.5:1 454 tall decks. Using the p nut port heads and intake with a 6.535 rod and a 1.645 and 1.65 compression height 4.25 pistons. You get 345hp and almost 600tq. 345hp @3800 and 600tq @1800 for 9.8:1. 365hp @3200 and 650tq @1800 for 10.5:1.
Looks good sir! Thank you for the motivation to do my 1985 suburban. 😊
Thanks!
Can’t believe you didn’t include me in the video😂
Your time is coming, young padawan.
Did you ever clean the channels where the rollers go....and do you not like taking the window out? Would like to have seen that. But I liked it anyways. Thanks
@@JonP-j6o I usually clean them and put a little axle grease around the track to prevent rust. Water that gets past the felts can collect on the tracks along with condensation and over time even the galvanization corrodes. I like to at least try to prevent that, even though the nylon rollers will move it around and displace the grease, at least the less used sections stay protected. I usually don’t pull the glass out unless I have to, as it’s just one more step and not really necessary unless the track is damaged. I have shown that on other square body videos.
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!!!
I've replaced the entire thing for the front and back ac cover I've purchased them online and I went with LED bulbs. I'm restoring my 1985 gmc sierra classic C1500 Suburban. ACME and OC Carpets sales ABS plastic headliners I purchased one.
Very good video. I wasn't sure if you could keep my attention for the 46 minutes but you sure did! I have that exact same mower and I have no issues yet (3 months old only) but if I do I can start looking at your video now. Thank you!
I want to do the opposite. I want to put a 1980 front clip on my 1985 C30.
@@Chuck_S there is also a video of that on our channel. It is a similar process.
I love your videos, how do you get the wiring diagrams on your phone?
In this case it wasn’t anything special, just screen shots from .pdf manuals.
@@wrenchwranglers thanks, was just wondering how you had a picture of that plug.
It's mice nit squirrels chewing up the wires.
I would have leaned toward mice, and it could have very well been, except I lean toward squirrels because of where it was parked, and the original owner told me he figured squirrels because he saw them. Other than that, yes I would have said mice also.
Hi. Great video. I have a question. I have a 1986 Suburban. I want to add the grab handles to mine to help the misses get in. You mentioned you have seen a lot of burbs with or without the grab handles. I believe they might have started like 88/89 with them. Do you know if the earlier models have the threaded portion already installed? I can pull the trim to see but thought I’d look and ask question on the webs first. Thanks.
@@anthnmnt it was an option, I believe. They had them earlier, but unless the option was selected for the build process it won’t have the threaded inserts. That would be something you have to add.
@@wrenchwranglers thanks. I looked at the option sheet for 86 and didn’t see it there. I had a 72 c20 truck and it only had lap belts. However there was a thread insert for A three point belt already pre is installed. Wasn’t sure if it was the same way with the suburbans. I’ll probably pull the trim off to see if I can feel around for the thread inserts.
@@anthnmntthe belts are sort of different because of the federal regulations; there was implementation around 72-73 requiring shoulder belts in the front and so at some point they started adding the threads for those, but the actual belts didn’t catch up until later. I assume they probably exhausted their supply chain of lap belts before the full transition. Since the grab handles are not federally mandated those inserts should only be there if the RPO was specified for them.
@@wrenchwranglersmakes sense. Thanks for the knowledge.
@@wrenchwranglersI did some looking and there seems to be two bolts about ten inches apart above the passenger side door. I would assume for the grab handle. :)
What was the finger height on clutch?
It’s been so long that I honestly don’t remember, sorry. The old one was worn so I doubt it would have been a good reference and I never measured the new one.
I bought new injectors for my D1105 and it ran perfectly. Aftermarket too. Nice job troubleshooting it.
Only 25k! That’s not bad at all. My older friend has a ‘57 sitting in his garage with a fresh stroker motor. He’s asking 5k. Body needs some work though. Might pick it up as a project piece
it would be better to put two 48w projectors in front for more lighting
I need to revise the whole front lighting. For a standard tractor, these light positions and styles work ok. But with the loader I’m constantly damaging them or snagging them. At some point I will be doing a light revision. I’d like to mount some work lights on the cab since I’ve added it.
Thank you so much brother somebody had the wrong belt system on my car and the water pump was turning backwards and causing it to overheat. Thank you so much for this video. God bless you 🙏❤️
Great Vidya! Always enjoy your content.
Thank you for this. I was curious about the internal components in an A6 and it's alternative, & your video was very informative. I have one in my '78 El Camino that needs help, and now I can make a "more informed decision" on a replacement.
A big thanks from the Silvernale family in New Orleans. You saved us alot of money and time. You're the man brotha.😎
Can u do brakes on 310ine don't work
The brake bands are accessed through a cover on top of each axle. I was going to do a video on brakes, however the bolts that hold my covers on are rusted solid and require some in depth work to extract. Maybe down the road, but right now it’s a very long project in my case.
