My first RC was the Frog back in the mid 80s, fond memories spending all our time in Beatties model shop, that's in great condition, the alloy plate and underside of the battery tray on mine were almost wore through lol That gear that was gunked up was probably where the other gear wasn't touching and was old congealed grease, And I think the Tamiya thread lock from back then was like a blue glue, it did smell great *LOL*
Ah Saturdays with my mates going to Beatties in Newcastles Eldon Square, highlight of our week.My cars each had a Beatties bag,the Frogs being an early blue one.
I also had this car back in the 80’s it was my first real r/c vehicle. Very nostalgic to see it again. I remember it having two heavy duty wire antennas on either side of the chassis that acted as a roll bar of sorts to protect the body in the event of a roll over. Great video 👍🏼
I had a frog back in ‘86 and I put Lancia rally wide wheels on it . It had a Le Mans 480T motor too. It was painted the same as the box art too. What a beautiful beast it was
Great project car. I remember as a kid always tearing down the gear box. I ran my Brat all the time cause it had the posi gear. I just built a rerelease Monster Beetle and put a MIP ball diff in it. I'm just gonna run it in the basement. I had tons of old screws and nuts when I restored tons of cars in the early 2000's. I replated all in gold, silver and black. Still have tons for projects. Love this old stuff.
Nice vintage frog, good to see a frog in great condition. Tamiya upgraded the gearbox quite a bit on the re-release, so no hex drive, Dog bones do help and I didn't notice the plate that meshes with the gearbox, in the re-release, but I could be wrong, as I've only built one of these myself a few years back. And yeah it's a headache of a gearbox to put together. Gravity Just holds everything in place Just before you screw everything down. Oh and mine did come with bearings for the gearbox but none for the car. And I also subbed. You're channel is very interesting and you have a good collection of tamiya. :)
Lovely Glen!!!. As I’ve said before I never had any love for this one back in the day even though it was really popular with the boys at my school. Maybe I missed out on something Glen!!. Watching you work from that original manual was brilliant... that really took me back👍👍👍👍
Darren Grimmer Yeah I was the same, I was never a lover of it, it’s pretty ugly really 😂👊🏻. But I have to say I was blown away when I ran it, the thing is quick and handled really well 😊👊🏻
Good vid again!👍 Don't forget to put on what actually finishes the frog! The twin metal Ariel's and be careful with that technigold I put one in my Subaru brat back in the day and it absolutely destroyed the diff and stripped the dog bones🤦♂️
Great video Glenn l am really a big fan of the ORV chassis l started the hobby back in the day with a Subaru Brat and then modified it to a Frog and started getting really decent results with it on track!! I had some big issues with it too though with those hex drive shafts( many will remember those damn things) and the gear box was a bit weak especially if fed decent power through it! so be careful with that gold motor Glenn 😉👍 Yeah big fan of the Frog and family! Nice job so far mate! You going boxart?? Boxart looks amazing on the Frog! Pink lol never looked so good!!
Just love the Frog, just finished my first Frog today a re re, byt great build just paint to go and I found some 540 sport tuned Tamiya motors so pretty excited to get it runnung
Fantastic Glen , so makes memories ordering this from the catalog with Acoms radio set . If I remember a few things the rear shocks came with various piston plates with different amounts of holes it had twin steel aerials . And manual speed controller gave me no end of trouble and was brutal on the gearbox and drive train . I guess fitted with the more powerful motor it could be worse. Go electronic speed controller .
Excellent Glenn! We saw a rere super cold buster kit for sale at our local and I was torn on whether or not to pick it up. We didn’t get it, but, it’s possible that we will have it in the next few days....
Looking at your grasshopper box brings back memories 😁 I completely trashed mine back in the late 80's. I cracked the white body from all the rough and tumble. I've probably still got it in the attic. The only thing I use to this day is the little orange handled pozidrive screwdriver that came with it ( I think it was for wheel assembly ) 😂👍
My 1st car was a Frog xmas 1984,after discovering your channel a few weeks ago I wanted to get that and the hopped up Fox and Boomerang which I raced as a teen back from mothers.Rather miffed to find out she dumped them years ago.I was so disappointed when the terrible hex half shafts stripped after a couple of weeks, because of this it hardly got used and became near mint shelf art.
You don't have to pull an upright to fix your steering drag link. Just pull the screw from the servo saver, and use a screwdriver to pop the ball link off the steering knuckle (either one), and you will be able to manipulate either steering drag link bar off, turn it one half to reinstall on the desired side, and re-secure the ball joint, and put the servo saver screw back in. My first RC car was a used Frog back in about '87. Came with a Futaba twin stick transmitter. The eventual reason I sold it was because the transmission kept skipping gears, and I couldn't figure out why. I moved on to a Fox by then, which was a much faster and better engineered buggy. Years later I started racing on road flat chassis cars. I still have my original Fox, though it's in pretty tough shape. Well loved you could say.
It's been over 30 years since I handled one of these Glenn and I can still feel that battery tray peg on my thumb tip! and oh how that diff was grindy lol So many memories.. I believe the blue gunk was the original thread lock that came with some Tamia models back in the day, I recall getting it everywhere at one point lol Was commenting about the steering thing when you noticed it in the video haha thought it looked a little off lol
just ordered the kit, had lots of "toy" rc cars as a kid never did the "hobby" grade ones. I really REALLY prefer the look of these old buggies over the new ones.
I just bought a re re Frog after 34 years away from the Hobby. Also bought a Grasshopper, a Hornet Evo, a Supersbare, a Hot Shot and an Avante Black so should keep me busy for a bit. Electronics have changed a lot and batteries too. Lot's to learn. How do I have one transmitter for them all? Or do I need a transmitter for each car?
Interesting stuff, and you can tell you enjoyed it! I had a Brat back in the day, loved the body but was (sacrilege alert) kind of disappointed with the chassis, mostly for being so unlike a real car but also for being so massively overbuilt. It hardly helped the underpowered motor and battery back then... BUT! It definitely works better for me with the frame-hugging Frog body shell on it. And I've loved the look of those rear spikes since forever. That Frog is going to look ace. Nice one. 👍😀
Wow, is just a buggy version of a Blackfoot. Never knew that, but I could tear it apart and rebuild it without the manual! LOL! My first Hobby grade was a Blackfoot! Thanks for sharing! I must have bought 100 pairs of the "hex shaft" ugh! I eventually changed out the rear end to a Blackfoot 3 rear end that has dog bones! (and upright rear shocks)
Glenn. Shocks are built similar to modern cva's. You can download re re manual from tamiya. Looks like the diff gear gas been in back to front. Very crucial it is in right way round
Wow. I’ve got a frog and a black foot. They’re interchangeable. You can turn one into the other. I even have the old speed controller that a bunch of windings on a shaft.
There was a slight anomaly on some of the frog diff gears that you had to flip the diff gear the other direction or it would rub the case slightly. This would also be a great time to shim (CRP shims or equivalent) the diff carriers to prolong the life of the bevel gears. Get a ultrasonic cleaner with just water+soap (no purple or green cleaners as they will mess up the aluminum) would work great at getting all the nooks and crannies. The brass spacer is correct for the front bumper mount to suspension.
If you flip your manual to the parts page at the back, and look in the "screw bag B" section, behind the 3x20 round head screw it does actually says "B2" as stated by the screws in the manual as you shows :-) I really don't use which bag to use section in the the manual, I go by the letter and number. Works for me :-) Frog is one of those I have never liked or owned, sold the first edition of a re-re Brat I got in a trade some years ago, but I do own both BF and MB x2. For some reason the ORV chassis has never been my thing. But the Frog do grow on me, so I may get one in the future :-)
Hi Glen, This is where I love youtube - I have an original Tamiya Frog and I believe mark 1 in as good condition (being dumped so rescued it) and am wondering what battery and charger you would recommend? (Ireland) . I just got it working again as a project with me and the son but the battery pack is the original and thinking of switching to Lipo. Any help would be great. Totally
Gareth Cornell Oh that’s very kind of you Gareth, thanks for the offer. I’ve actually finished this now and it’s on the shelf. Thanks for watching buddy 😊👊🏻
Bec receiver will shed the weight of the 6v servo batteries! I prefer the old mhz system over ghz because hardly anybody uses it nowadays + the signal transmits through water,rc subs, aircraft in cloud/fog. One part I wouldn't keep original is the hex shafts as the corners will shear of especially with a technigold!!!
This was the model featured on an episode of Punky Brewster in the 80's... She was supposed to have won a tea set but the store thought she was a boy and sent her the Frog instead. It was that show that opened my eyes to real RC cars and I started saving my money immediately. I eventually saved up about $200, a lot for an 11-year-old with a propensity for candy and baseball cards, but was still nowhere near where I needed to be for a new kit and everything else. Fortuitously I ran into a guy selling a used, fully-modified Blackfoot and all his other gear from the trunk of his car at Little Caesers pizza, and the rest is history.
Gazfish 66 Yes I did my friend, that was when I was in the uk, I keep saying I’m going to buy another over here, but I keep putting it off 😳 Thanks for watching buddy
I'd probably get strung up by the purists out there. I have several vintage Tamiya buggies, and I just remove the period electrics from them, and I'm not overly shy about putting re-re parts in them either. I like to get them running in fair to good condition and not worry too much about authenticity. Having said all that, this buggy is turning out quite nice. Edit: Oh, and I'd turf those old hex drives as far as I could throw them.
I had a Frog back in the 80s. I HATED the gearbox. I could never get that clunky thing to work right. The rear axles would always come apart too. Biggest PIA car I had. I had more fun with my Hornet.
If possible, you should try and run it with the original MSC (it looks to be in reasonable condition with no corrosion: the contact plates just need a clean) for that ultimate retro analogue RC experience. You can't beat the sound of those old speedos, even if they were hazardous when the BEC nicad power ran low and the car suddenly took on a mind of its own!
I thought you were a Tamiya surest and I am to an extent I just want to put modern things at it sometimes it's very hard to get from Tamiya because the stuff is expensive but if I can get the right motors for certain cars I would like that.
Seeing these Frog videos is making feel really nostalgic! I love the skeleton style chassis so much.

I’m exactly the same my friend, I’m far from a purist, as long as it looks and runs great then I’m happy with that 😊
Thanks for watching 👊🏻
I had a Frog back in the 80s. I HATED the gearbox. I could never get that clunky thing to work right. The rear axles would always come apart too. Biggest PIA car I had. I had more fun with my Hornet.
Hey Glen can't you put full ball bearings in the gearbox somewhere?
Are you going to get the re re version too?
awwwwww sp28 servos.......... :D
chloe devereaux
Old skool 😊👊🏻
My first car. Took 10 months paper round to buy in 85
You know those arms were talking about their I also think they seem to be like anti-sway bars I think they do double duty on the front suspension.

Yeah unfortunately I had to go esc, the double resistors were shot 😞
Thanks for watching buddy
What do you pay for a vintage frog??
FlyingAmbo
It’s all depends on condition and the country it’s in, the prices are different unfortunately 😬
I thought you were a Tamiya surest and I am to an extent I just want to put modern things at it sometimes it's very hard to get from Tamiya because the stuff is expensive but if I can get the right motors for certain cars I would like that.
Well shit now I want one too
You might still be able to get brass pinions from Tamiya or someone else that will fit them.
Brad Kalman my original Frog I had in the 80s came with Al motor pinions
I remember this model and my friend had the hornet ,,I always wanted one but my parents was tights bastards !
