Mr O'Brien has too much to say for himself. I suggest he look at the documented review by a group of Aussies who took a Patrol, a Pajero and a Great Wall on a grueling venture on the old telegraph road in northern Australia. The GW performed beyond expectations and didn't get stuck anywhere despite being loaded to the gunwales with people and gear and being put through some ridiculous situations just to see what happened to it.
The earlier ones are getting up to the 150000 km mark now, and some members of the 4x4 paddock bashers club swear by their GWs and these guys don't tolerate shit. Col, NZ.

I bought 3 of these nearly 7 yrs ago for my company so theyve served me well ive just recently replaced them with the new model all 3 have done over 300ks+ and were still hauling very well yes i got them tuned cause they where under powered with only 100kws but they where tuned to 150kws with a little over 420nm of torque they where a great cheap investment for my company ive now got 7 of these and a hilux and the luxy has had to go back to toyota a couple of times cause it keeps randomly going into limp mode i will say if you do get one only buy if your going to use it as a tradies ute or farm hacker if you want to pull a caravan or boat regularly then get it tuned up

I don't know if these are made in different countries, but certainly the ones we get in my country have proven themselves to be tough workhorses. The interior plastics do get quite rattly over time, but that's typically with careless and even abusive commercial use. I've driven ones owned for family use and everything's still tight even after 5 years and 100,000kms. And running costs, especially in terms of parts and service, is A LOT cheaper than the comparable Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger etc

I don't know about the engine, but everything assembled in Bulgaria is extremely durable. I have a 35 years old drilling machine "ЕЛПРОМ ЛОВЕЧ" and it still works great. Now these machines are called Sparky and only Bosch may be considered better, but it's at 5x price. Everything we produce is like German, dumbasses. Also pretty cheap.

I had one in Caribbean when I was living there for a project. At least on the island I was staying at, trucks dont last very long regardless of maker. Salt completely destroys the frame within 4 to 5 years. Given that, I think a GW makes a lot more sense than a Hilux since the reliability doesnt really matter. (Not saying GW is not reliable, mine was reliable during the time I owned it)

we've test drive 2 of them and we've driven range rover and such and could say alittle on the japanese side cause we're love older nissans and the great walls both drove well and were nice to drive along with seemed to have plenty of power and we still see them knocking around abit
we've got nissan d21s and those are one of the toughest pickups made and terrano/mistrals and we could compared the great
walls as pretty good against them and when we drove the great wall it felt fairly strong and pulled through the gears well
remember the japanese had alot of problems with their earlyr cars and pickups and as we all know rust

i guess those people who give bad comment about this pick up are mostly those who never work using pick up truck either they are pencil pusher or still studying in school. people who work using pick up truck will say, as long as it can carry a good load behind and spare you from the elements and for a brand new one it cost the same as second hand pick up..it is a good value! most of pick up nowadays are tying to get pencil pusher into buying it, they kind of lost the reason of it.

my mate had a great wally ute and he gave away for $4000 1 years old. he was driving doing 110 km and heard a clunk crack noise and his passenger door broke off lucky to hang on by the lock mechanism and that was just the start.
he kept the $4000 and bought a canopy for his new Amarok

well you should look at your Iphone (if you have one) and see where it is made? other thing you consider cool, you will be surprise where it made. i don't know what is your criteria for reliable and safe but if you really in the field using pickup truck any truck with AC and can carried load in the back plus it didn't tear your wallet apart are consider reliable regardless if it was made in China or not. farmer doesn't need satnav, climate control, or 20 star crash rating (teenage do)

I have driven one of these and they are good trucks, remember they are £14000 on the road, for that money they are a excellent buy especially in the present economic climate.
Chinese cars will win through and know i am not chinese i used to import kia's back in 1999 when they were unheard of now look at the company! as i said chinese will win though.

    • @invadingnimrod
      @invadingnimrod 8 років тому +1

not amazing but you get what you pay for. They tend to focus more on lots of fancy features as opposed to a simplistic yet good design. The gearboxes are pretty shite, even when brand new they feel cheap. Once they get to about 60,000 miles they're pretty much done so bare that in mind, I've never seen one that's done much more than that. They are slow, off the top of my head I think the horsepower is about 80 something which is very slow by todays standards especially for a 2.0l turbo diesel. They are pretty torquey though, they are quite impressive off road and don't really have much trouble pulling heavy loads. They are also easy to work on despite all the gadgetry. In the UK the oldest Steeds on the roads are 2011 which obviously means there isn't much of a second hand market since the cheapest second hand one you can buy at the moment is about £10,000 and that will be at the dreaded 60k mileage so if it were me with £10k in my pocket and looking to buy a pickup I would buy a Hilux or something for a few grand and save the rest to fix the odd thing that goes wrong on it, so basically what I'm saying there is that in my opinion the massive warranty you get with a Steed doesn't justify the cost of buying it if you are trying to save money. The only people who I think would truly make a reasonable saving is big businesses who buy 6 or 8 trucks at a time brand new with the intention of replacing them every few years due to the high mileage they intend to put on them, the warranty is double mileage/time compared to other pickups so not only are they saving £6000 or £7000 per truck but they can keep the trucks for twice as long before replacing them in theory. I guess if you run your own little business that requires a truck and you do a lot of mileage then you stand to make some sort of saving with a Steed because of the reasons I just mentioned but not as much of one. Hope this helps :3

I honestly think the toyota can not be beaten HOWEVER and a big HOWEVER at that If one of these last around the 5 year mark you are on a winner if no break downs etc etc etc
Working for yourself is hard these days and with ever higher costs its good to be able to buy a cheap and nasty thats not so nasty if you get my drift ????? I bought a ford a few years back
the worst thing I ever did As always the engine and gearbox were not bad but the body what the FUCK sorry but it just fell apart around me to the point I could not drive up a customers drive
without feeling ashamed !!!!! When will these companies stop charging a fortune for crap ?????? I also bought an L.D.V. van with all my friends asking what the hell was I doing I have now
done 288K in the van and only surface rust and not one single problem "sorry air bag light " bastard would not go off but auto sparki fixed for 20 quid !!!! In that 288K my so called mates
have swaped their vans twice !!!!!! So in a nut shell don't always put these nasty bits of kit to one side they might just might save you a Friggin fortune long term but as always if you are
not buying new look for a good one it takes time but worth it Hopethat makes sense and good luck with any vehicle these days they are allout to get ya !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Caution Steed rear drum brakes may contain traces of asbestos that crashed and burned brake shoes, 2.0 smelt like regular and interior was too austere with cheap vinyl seats and you reap what you sow.

Avoid these things at all cost! The engines in these things couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding and the tiny 2.0 diesel is even worse! My buddy had one for work and within 18 months the thing was in pieces and every single panel was absolutely covered in rust and that's living in a hot dry climate! I'd hate to imagine how bad it would rust in areas where salt is used on the roads! You'd be lucky to get a year out of it seriously

I would not say a car is good because you've had it a few months and racked up 10,000 miles on it haha I had a 1999 Ford Falcon for 14 years and 960,000KM (600,000 miles) on the same untouched engine and that thing never let me down. Come back when you get to that and tell me it's good haha I've heard way too many horror stories about the Great Walls and witnessed it first hand. And yes these engines are super weak

Yeah wasn't mine but the guy had a V8 before the Great Wall and then sold the Great Wall to get another V8 haha I guess it would feel weak depending on what you're used to... But as for the rust I'm surprised with the salt and cold it hasn't kicked in yet! Ones I've seen over here in any colder areas where roads are salted or near beaches the things are falling apart within a year or two!

Typical Chinese quality. Shit! Replaced clutch, replaced rear diff, replaced idle control valve twice, broken drivers front seat, seat belt brackets have fallen apart and that's just at 40,000kms on clock. Can't tow for shit, no power whatsoever off road, struggles to overtake, people don't be fooled by the good looks. I know I was! I traded in my 1985 Land cruiser FJ40 for this piece of shit, very regrettable choice.

I used to want to buy an RV, but back then a Great Wall RV(based on their pickup) was the only 1 I could afford, so I read a lot about it. Some body drove thousands of miles without malfunction, went all the way from east(north-east) of China to Tibet, I mean, that do says something, Tibet is the highest ground in the world, and the air is thin, road is tough, filled with stones.
And everybody I read about said great wall diesel pickup is very robust, performs pretty OK for its price, and Great Wall Pickup has been sold overseas millions(NO.1 car exporter of China), I mean China isn't famous for its car manufacturing, that big number of oversea selling says something, those ppl in India, South America buy pickup not to do easy work like family picnic, mostly they are using them for business purpose, and they all like this pickup, also means it is very reliable car, with reasonable price.
