- Sleeping by the Mississippi, the monograph published in 2004 by photographer Alec Soth, was a landmark photobook that established him as one of the most evocative chroniclers of contemporary life in America. Embarking on a series of spontaneous road trips along the Mississippi river, Soth’s formative work follows in the tradition of the ‘on-the-road’ photography of Robert Frank, Walker Evans and Stephen Shore, capturing the spellbinding landscapes, eclectic communities and individuals that exist outside of the global spotlight.

Beautiful, I love Alec Soth's work
For my situation, it's the experiences that are why I am there, not the images. But many times, the images have more of a larger impact than the experience. At least for others. Hard to explain without context.

In my opinion, it's not about allowing yourself to fail, it's about taking a bazillion shots, relentlessly going over each decent picture, finding that one, with potential, or one that can be manipulated and making it outstanding. That's called dedication to the ART.
I'm a spray & pray kinda guy myself but his process can't be done the way you described. He is actually introverted yet he relates to friends, acquaintances & complete strangers in his work. gets them to reveal their quirks, hobbies, intimate moments. It's almost the opposite of spray & pray. Plus he uses a large format camera.

Has anybody done his online course with Magnum? Any feedback?
Alessio Grigolini this was actually one of the episodes, if you’re a big fan it’s worth every penny. I do wish he went more into detail about lighting subjects and what he use for works like Sleeping By the Mississippi or Niagara. He does show some lighting techniques but it wasn’t anything crazy. The beginning I felt took a little to much time telling who he is, which is important but I don’t know if it needed to be that much.
