I sold my fender
Too use vintage
That’s how good they are
I recently got the 25th anniversary jazz
With alder body aswell
Yeah, I used to be a headstock snob until I took a year off the road and worked in a music shop about 13 years ago. Having the opportunity to play so many instruments and compare them directly was a real eye opener. We were selling Vintages that sounded and played better than some of the Gibsons. But it still wasn’t a problem to sell the big names.
@@JamieMallender your right 100%
Awesome reviews. I loved the humor and honesty you brought
Thank you Matthew. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and I really appreciate you taking time to leave such a nice comment. ✌️
i own a vj74 ,i tried the fender player it was good but but pricey ,i bypassed the fender after playing the vintage ,one because it sounded better than the other one and two it was 200 pounds cheaper .i got the other bass sound for a realistic price ,its punchy light and suits our bands sound and i lovei it too bits
Thank you for watching! Can’t fault it - a better bass for less money. It’s a winner any way you look at it. ✌️
"I love Behs guitars. Everything about 'em. All those different shapes and styles, I just can't get enough of them!"
Hard relate! As a guitarist who sucked and got bored with guitar and got overwhelmed with since there's something so cool just about Basses in general and all the difference nuances, they are the coolest instruments to play and collect.
Yep, I love playing guitar but given the choice I’d always choose bass. It’s just where I feel at home. ✌️
Outstanding review Jamie, clear, concise and fun - with great playing to highlight the instrument. Yes, subbed and a Vintage jazz will be ordered very soon!
Hi Peter! Thank you very much for watching. I’m glad you liked the video and that it worked for you. That means a lot to me. Thank you for taking time to comment. Have an awesome day! ✌️
I love the Vintage Icon basses!! Thanks for making this video.
Rumblin Man thank you young man! Me too - flawless in any price bracket, but for that money - wow!
Jamie Mallender I played a few at NAMM and was very impressed.
I’m impressed. The best review I found on UA-cam so far 🤙
Thank you for watching and taking time to leave such a nice comment. Have a great day! :)
I’ve got a VJ74 and the V4. I’m selling the J as I bought a Fender Vintera 70s J and much as I loved my VJ74 - it is a great instrument - the Fender is in a different league altogether. The V4 on the other hand is a keeper - truly fantastic bass. Your point about connecting with an instrument is well made: I connected with my V4 the minute I picked it up. Great review!
Thank you for watching and taking time to leave such a great comment!
Enjoyed the vid & your presentation. They do look and sound great. Cheers!
Thank you very much for watching and taking time to comment Iain.
for me its all down to the neck ... having this worn in, silky smooth feel does the trick...
i dont care about relicing but the neck is the argument for going reliced
Total agreement! Absolutely. I always wished they wouldn’t gloss necks. Then I had some satin ones which are much better. But, the feel of the roadworn vintages is the best finish I’ve tried.
Hi just seen this Chanel for the 1st time. Thanks for a genuine and honest review.
Thank you very much for watching Craig. I missed this comment somehow.
Great looking and sounding basses 🎶 🎸
Thank you for watching and taking time to comment. :)
"I would marry this bass while conducting a rampant affair with the P". 😂 Nice dude.
I’d say that’s a damn fine choice sir! 😂
Thank you for a genuine and dedicated presentation of the Vintage basses in the P-, J- and fretless versions. I sense that you would choose a Vintage over a Fender - at any time. I would too - I myself have experienced that i.e. a Vintage Icon bass is far better constructed physically and sonically than even a Fender Mexico model despite the similar design. I have also played a V4MTB Tony Butler bass. It kicks hard too, I feel. The Wilkinson hardware on the Vintage speak clearly for themselves. I had a bass companion that even felt that the Wilkinson pickups were more powerful than the standard J- og P-bass pickups on Fenders. Keep it up Jamie - nice hands down video presentation. You really stand out.
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave such a nice comment. I would always choose a Vintage over a Fender. It’s not that I necessarily thank they are “better” but they are certainly as good and I much prefer the Wilkinson pickups to the stock pickups they put in Fenders. The pickups in the VJ74’s for instance are wound a little hot - I like that extra bit of fire that they have in them. When you take the price difference into account buying a Fender just doesn’t make any sense.
What a fabulous review! Top job :)
Thank you. Thanks for watching and for taking time to leave a nice comment. :)
I have the black Reliced Jazz bass, haven’t touched my Fenders in over a year!!!
Oh yeah, that’s a nice model. What’s the weight like on yours?
Watched this all the way through . Excellent review . I really like the V4 Precision basses .
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave such a nice comment. I thoroughly enjoyed playing these basses and really didn’t want to part with them.
@@JamieMallender Absolutely , my pleasure . Been saving up to get a Vintage V4 blue precision bass . Absolutely love the sound and look of it . Subscribed !
Haha great video Jamie. You made such great points in this video and also really sell these nice basses in such a great way that i truly hope that Vintage lets you keep these two babies 😎
So true about not needing to spend a fortune on musical instruments. Getting instruments that play really well is much more important.Actually some of the guitars that cost me very little money have become my most favorite ones to play on while some of my more expensive ones are sitting in their cases and getting little love. And i realize how stupid that actually is. I also recognize the part of being super careful to not get any damages on the more expensive ones.... irony is that damages happened to the one i was most careful with. It just happens and it isn’t the end of the world. They should be enjoyed and used rather than be locked up.
And you are right about instruments not wearing that fast anymore. I have one axe that i keep around at all times, never get put away or protected. I play it intensely and there is no wear on the finish whatsoever, besides a few dings, chips and scratches. But none of that wear on the edges like these relic ones. I guess tou really need to have arms with skin like sandpaper to achieve that much wear in reality hahah
The thing is, I just feel really passionately about this stuff. I’ve known so many people who couldn’t afford to, waste money on gear - chasing that perfect tone or whatever, believing that getting the right brand names will change something as if they’re magic or something. And very often those big names are a disappointment. It’s kind of my mission to try to help people find great sounds for less coin. I have to arrange for these basses to go back today. Time to put on my big brave boy hat.
I was researching for Vintage brand since i never had the chance to play one and came across this video. Definitely will be looking forward for my next bass to be a Vintage and you are right the big name on the headstock is not important, what it is having a bass with quality that you can play and enjoy without making the sacrifice of spending thousands of dollars.
Awesome review thank you
My pleasure! Thank you for watching. If. Can ever be of any help, please shout up. :)
Very enjoable video - enjoyed it Jamie - I plan on buying both!
Hey David! Thank you for watching. You won’t regret it, they’re both excellent!
@@JamieMallender ...really like your style Jamie...no b.s....you are just being yourself and that's quite refreshing these days. But yes, I've been a headstock decal snob for along time having owned many "vintage" basses over the years. Recently, I discovered how good the Squier Classic Vibe basses are but have struggled with the "Squire" name. Let's be honest though, aside from a few musicians in the crowd, most people have no clue and don't give a rip...i mean, just who are we trying to impress anyway? A good player can make any bass sound good but a crappy player can't make a Fodera sound good. I've been looking at these on Reverb and then came across your video...I'm definitely in now...plus i love the relic thing and at 60 I don't have enougn years left to inflict "hones" wear anyway....thanks brother!
"honest wear"! lol
@@davidschrader3257 thank you David. I had a UA-cam channel for a long time before I decided to really make a go of it. I watched some videos on how to be an awesome UA-camr and decided not to do any of that! I figured I’ll just be myself and folk can like me or not. The thing is, I intend to stick at it and build it so I just couldn’t face playing the long game putting on some kind of “What’s Up YouTuuuuuube,” kind of act. Imagine trying to sustain that kind of pretend intensity! I can’t be arsed!
Great review! I own a V6JMH myself and I completely agree with everything you said about Vintage making great guitars full stop, regardless of the price point. No dealers in Canada, more's the pity, but there are several Vintage instruments listed on Reverb and eBay, so Bob's your uncle there.
"Don't pissy-pants about!" OMG, words to live by! Rock on, Mr. Mallender! \m/ Hope you're able to get gigging ASAP.
Hey buddy! Thank you for leaving such an awesome comment. Vintage guitars mean the world to me. I’ve managed to get out and do a few gigs. It’ll be a bit hit and miss for a while and I feel a bit rusty but it’s coming good slowly. Thank you so much for watching. ✌️
at my local store they just picked up some Vintage basses and guitars and i played a Firenze Red Vintage V4 bass out a vox amp with the tone off picked it while palm muting and its the sound ive been looking for for the few years ive been deep in the craft
Oh man I love that model! Would love to get one myself. Sounds like you’ve found a beauty my friend!
I’ve been a “headstock decal snob” for many years....just ordered a VJ75 in 3 color sunburst. Anxious to get it in my hands. ✌️
I’m sure you’ll love it. I don’t have that particular modernity I’ve played a few and I’d really like one!
@@JamieMallender I’ll keep you posted on my findings lol. If it’s what I expect, I’ll add a few more to the arsenal.
@@ericcurtis8824 Excellent. I’ve found them to be so good for the money that I just can’t stop collecting them.
Thanks for the video , currently purchase a Vintage brand mustang bass copy from a japan surplus , and i'm looking for some review about the bass but i can't see one , and came across to this video and loving the vintage brand right now
ThNk you very much for watching. I love the Vintage basses and guitars because they’re not just good for the money, they’re just great! Great hardware, reasonable price, well put together, I can’t fault them.
Great demo of some great basses. Their relic work is superb. Every bit as good, if not better than a Fender Player or some American Fenders (I personally hated the Am Pro P bass). I'm a lefty and I own a lefty VJ74 Icon Jaco bass. It really nails the Jaco tones, and a fretless distressed Jaco copy in a left handed model at this price point is simply unheard of. (BTW, Jaco owned 2 vintage Fenders, a '60 fretted and a '62 fretless, so it's not unreasonable for Vintage to offer a distressed fretted model). Looking for a lefty V4 distressed P bass like yours now.
Thank you so much for watching my friend. Agreed, it really does nail the sound. I can’t play like that, but I’m a huge fan and always loved that tone. Mine got dropped recently but it’s fine, just a bent tone pot that crackles.
100% I am agree ! I am vintage player since i bought v6 thomas blur guitar. This guitar has so amazing sound that i sold straight on my two fenders stratocasters because non of them been that good as vintage! Anyway
I am fastinated how good guitar you can get from vintage brand and how average guitar can get from fender for 3 x higher price or more. I am not gonna to overpaid for logo anymore. So vintage brand cured me from been such a snob and thinking that famous logo on the headstock giveing you any better soud.
Wow Pete, a man after my own heart! I’m so glad you’ve found Vintage Guitars and enjoy them as much as I do. And thank you so much for watching my video and taking time to comment. I really appreciate that. :)
Stayed to the end.
Enjoyed it.
Hi Tim! Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to comment. Have an awesome day young man!
@@JamieMallender I'm all for a reasonably priced bass - these days I have three basses - A 90's USA Foundation I picked up for £200, A Bass Collection Jive Bass (£150), and a Mex Classic Series 50's Precision - they cover all the sounds I'm going to need, sound wonderful, and didn't break the bank!
I remember when Bass Collection basses we’re everywhere in the UK. I never bought one but was often tempted by the necks - seemed so easy to play.
@@JamieMallender yeah the necks are special - exceptional for the money.
Yeah, I always thought so. I wonder why you don’t see them so much now, they still make them I think.
What a fantastic video. I have been looking for a bass to use in a home studio ( I don't have £4k) and was considering the Vintage as they generally have a good reputation. I've just found what I'm looking for so I won't ' pissy pants about' anymore......... Thanks
Thank you for watching Mark, and for taking time to comment. I’m really glad it was useful to you. :)
great video :)) when are these getting released ? if they ever are? i neeed that p bass in that colour!!
They’re out now! Let me know if you struggle to find a dealer and I’ll see what I can do. :)
You answered a question I've had for a long time. I own a Vintage V74 reissue, but it says V96 on the headstock.... I know they used to be called ejm96 but now I know I'm not the only one with the odd named bass! V96 looks more like a music man nowadays.
That’s right Lee it does! I can’t recall exactly when it was but Vintage renamed some models to bring some uniformity to the way their expanding ranges of instruments were labelled. Their growth as brand is fascinating to me as I’m not just an endorsee but a fan of what they do in a very competitive area of the market. Thank you for watching buddy, and for commenting - your time is much appreciated.
That guy from The Kites plays one
Really? That’s cool to know. Everyone should have one! 😂😂
Great review! I have 3 metal axxe basses all different, they look odd but you can do anything on 'em! Old now, but excellent! (like me! lol!) Keep up the reviews while I try to find an icon pb!
Hey Simon! I don’t have any Metal Axxe basses but I have 2 of the guitars - a wraith and a Warp. They’re just great versatile guitars but look suited for one thing. Thank you so much for watching and taking time to comment.
That's the surprise..."look suited for one thing" but the truth is very different with that 2 band onboard preamp 😀! I have the custom (in cream all original), disc and wraith... plus "a few others"😳...too many others 🤦😂🍻!
Ah yes, that onboard preamp really gives those basses some poke. Perception is interesting isn’t it!
@@JamieMallender yep! Another great bass in my opinion is the 32" mid scale bass the vantage avenger, great dynamics. The Westone spectrum DX (one more fret and a more punchy pickup than the SX etc) is also very underated and a great live bass. The early 90's samick Artist series are 24 frets and play great very underated.... The Ibanez 707 and 724 are sublime....3 piece quarter sawn neck etc...
Do the frets of the v4 wear quickly? I've got the Encore E4 version and I'm looking for a replacement p-bass for that one. I want a p-bass that weights a little bit more and has more durable frets. Great video BTW you are a great communicator and the video is super enjoyable 😉
Thank you very much for watching and leaving such a nice comment. I haven’t heard of anyone having fast wearing frets on a V4. It’s a stunning instrument at that price.
Enjoyed your review I’m also in my later years played guitar all my life never a bass so I want to get a keeper , hard to believe it’s so good at this price should I get one thanks again 👍
My pleasure, I’m glad the videos was helpful. Yes, definitely get one - these basses are absolutely outstanding. I’m using Vintage basses on all session recordings and on the road with Graham Oliver’s Army, we all play Vintage. ✌️
@@JamieMallender thanks Jamie for your help looks like your one of the good guys , can you recommend a home use amp I’ve no idea on bass amps …
Yes definitely. If you want a really nice quality bass amp for the house, I would say the Hartke HD15. 15 watts will seem like a lot of power in the house but I wouldn’t go with less for bass. A cheaper alternative that is also very well made and sounds great is the Fender Rumble 15
Great video, Ive just acquired a Vintage v4....again as had some in the past but sold them...stupidly. Weight is important to me due to back issues so I need the lightest I can find, the one I have just purchased comes in at 8.4lb but I would like a lighter one. Of all the places selling them that I have asked say the weight is around 5kg which +11lb??? I would be interested to know where you acquired one at 8lbs? Thanks
Andy Lupton Hi Andy! Glad you liked the video. Thanks very much for taking the time to leave a nice comment. I’m a Vintage endorsee. I have 3 older VJ74’s that each weigh in differently but are all heavier than the 2 basses in the video. Vintage asked me if I would make them a demo for these 2 instruments so they sent them to me directly and sadly they are collecting them tomorrow - unless I mug enough old ladies between now and then. e-mail me at jamiemal@hotmail.co.uk if you’d like me to help you get one at the right weight. It’s no hassle.
Thanks for the very honest review, and some great playing. I owned a EJM96, and sold it to my friend for his son, who’s still enjoying playing it 9 years later. So I’ve been looking at Vintage again and thinking a V4 Pbass would hit the spot. So my question is, are the ReIssue models any different from the Icons, besides the fake roadwear? Mainly, the neck construction and using Trev’s Alnico pickups?
...(me edit adoption so adding here 8’). Very much enjoyed your round up from the FB guitar story on. Right on. Don’t be a “headstock snob” and don’t pissypants around! Perfect.
Thank you for watching and I really appreciate you taking time to comment. No, in reality the differences are largely cosmetic. I do highly recommend both ranges and I’m sure you’d be very happy with either - at this price point they are a win win!
I’m liking this relic V4 more and more actually... excuse the word ‘fake’ used above. I work on my own basses to make them play the way I want, and I could work on the ‘patina’ a bit... plus, vintage white and mint guard seems to do it for me. Anyway, thanks again. (and, you really need to get Don’t Pissy Pants About! on a Tshirt m8. Cheers from east coast Canada.
@@petebjerkelund5088 did it! jamiemallender.bandcamp.com/merch/classic-t-shirt-dont-pissypants-about
I think a relic looks good in a Punk or Grunge band.
I definitely agree - it really goes with that kind of sound and style.
Awesome job! Just ordered one, I was wondering if a fender tortoise pick guard can fit the p bass?
Excellent! It doesn’t exactly - are you a Facebook user? If you join the group Vintage Guitar Players we can best help you there with that issue. facebook.com/groups/thevintageplace/ if not let me know and I’ll let you have some info
@@JamieMallender I don’t have Facebook, but some info would be appreciated!
Ok. What country are you in?
@@JamieMallender US
I’m told that these guys are really good for making you a scratchplate to fit exactly. wdmusic.com/ the US vintage pro shop recommend them. I’m a big fan of unique scratch plates. I buy the material on eBay, take the original off, draw round it and cut it out with a hacksaw. A few files and a little sandpaper to finish off the edges works a treat.
Hi Jamie - great review - what is the finish on these basses - i like they're not high gloss
Thank you very much for watching. I’d say it’s more of a flat finish - more like a satin might be a good description. In recent years I’ve found I much prefer that to high gloss. High gloss protects the finish better but to me it is more restrictive to play. I’m all about it being easier to get around the neck.
@@JamieMallender Thanks Jamie
"Don't pissy-pants about!" 😁
Haha! No pissypanting about, just do it. Life is short, just get on with it. :)
I agree, Jamie! Cheers!
What’s the finish on the bass and could it wear and chip overtime?
The finish on the paint is the same kind of solid lacquer job you’d find on any quality modern instrument other than where the relicing has taken the wear down to the wood. The relicing on my fretless hasn’t chipped or changed in any way in all the years I’ve had it. Must’ve had it 8 or 9 years...
What do you think about the Yamaha BB bases?
I like them. I had one many years ago. I always say if I played anything other than a Vintage or Fret-King, it would be a Yamaha and I probably would go with a BB again. Great company, excellent build quality and quality control, reasonable prices - I had an Attitude too but the neck was massive, just way too big for me. It was stunning though.
Great video. I’ll never be a fan of the relic look - but the tones from these basses are wonderful. A quick question, are the pickups ceramic or alnico?
Thank you for listening buddy. The pickups are Alnico. :)
Please can you tell me what is the difference between the V4 icon and V4 reissued?
Yes no problem. The reissued series are standard models. The Icon series includes relic versions and special or signature models - that sort of thing.
What's the difference with the coaster series? Are those any good?
The Coaster series is more of a budget range. If you have a look at vintageguitarsrus.com/ you’ll be able to compare specs. Some of the parts used are cheaper parts to bring the price down. It’s a nice price point. Not quite as cheap as a lot of the budget brands out there but a whole lot better guitar. I’ve played a few and I was really impressed.
Are the pickups wound hotter on these icon basses Jamie ? I’ve got the vj74 25th silver burst
I’m looking for a 2 nd bass Outa these 2 icons what would you say the v4 or vj74 ?
Difficult to say. They were equally good as each other. I’m more of a jazz bass player but that V4 was amazing. It’s nice to have the choice between P bass and J bass - then you’ve got most classic tones covered.
@@JamieMallender spot on cheers Jamie
@@JamieMallender you ever use flatwounds in your vintage basses Jamie ?
What’s your take on them in a bsnd setting ?
@@blooter6360 I use flatwounds on my fretless which I play frequently. But I don’t really use them on other basses. I have tried it out obviously but I prefer the brighter sound. Over the years Ive found that I start out with a bright, zingy sound. It sounds too bright and zingy. The rest of the band starts up, and I cut through - I no longer sound too bright. Start off with a dull sound, the bass is inaudible. Of course, for a totally different kind of band with a lot more space and subtlety, flats might be perfect.
@@JamieMallender cheers Jamie
I feel the same in the covers band I’m in nickel plated steel
I was using flats but just couldn’t adjust
Just play the bass!!!!!!!
Thank you for watching Mark. If you want to hear just the music there are videos on my channel with these basses that are just that. 🙂
Are they neck heavy?
Mine wasn’t no, and it was a 5 string.
How much is that white one mate? Nice
About £350 dude. You looking for a bass?
@@JamieMallender I've got an Epiphone EB3 bass and its nice but I like the sound in the video of that white one. I only use my bass in the house and laying down bits to drum grooves but I like that white one. Btw... I think your videos are improving all the time. Nice one 👍
Thanks mate. I almost bought an EB3 many years ago, and always regretted not doing. It took me several years but I finally convinced Vintage to make one very similar. Not got one yet, but I might ask if I can demo one soon.
"I would marry this bass while conducting a rampant affair with the P". 😂 Nice dude.
Relic'd instruments....: I own a relic'd Tele made by a luthier. I don't like the relic but bought it because it was an amazing instrument and I "tolerated" the relic job. But now I have owned it for a while I realize I use the guitar way more because it's allready battered. I play it, put it on the floor getting a drink, play some more, lean it against a table, play some more, bash it into my desk....oops, ohwell....play it more! I'm never afraid to damage it or scratch it, who cares! So now I actually like relic'd instruments...it's a mental thing. But I totally get people not liking it.
😝
Best to stay away from these, save abit more and get a fender player series.
Why do you say that?
I think in terms of quality and in my opinion abit more professional
@@xplosivecovers529 you can’t have played many examples to compare the 2 then.
