My crew and I are and will be 3.5 players for life. We love it and nothing about 5E or this new version makes us want to switch. That said, I hope this new version is successful and helps keep this hobby going!
guidance on illusions, how to break things... these are very good additions. More stuff like that, so we don't have to use Jeremy Crawford's Twitter as a resource so often
Thank you for "getting over" the OGL history. Staying cautious about tethering a career to another's IP is perhaps desirable. Better we all chose to find solid ground forward tethered to D&D as a game, instead and enjoy ourselves more. Edited typos
I feel with how much time they have spent reviewing and allowing player feedback. I am pretty certain it will be an improvement. Although I dont know if we needed just improvements versus new features. Personally i would have liked to see some of the features pathfinder has, like 3 action economy and ability traits like flourish or press traits that allow you to balance so much easier
Like I've said from the beginning, I wish there were more changes. But I do like what they have changed. I still think it will be my go-to game... because my players want more character options than Shadowdark. Honestly, I don't think I'll completely love any game until I design my own.
i think that Aasimar will be included in the new book, as a contrast to the Tiefling. they seemed to make a point of flavoring the sub-classes along these lines, so it makes since to me. Genasi is another good candidate because it gives you this same type of flavor.
I am happy that a lot of the dm facing stuff is now going to be player facing. We saw this with the Study and Influence action taking DMG/Tasha chapters and making them into actions a player can reference and take at any time, They have a lot of space to design features around with those. Now with Object HP/AC being player facing, every part of the dungeon key and description will have that much more weight as players listen in for wooden and cloth descriptions excited to break things, or the description of what material the evil mcguffin is made out of. The big thing for me is that I think most DM’s haven’t really read the DMG, they depend on the PHB for their general knowledge and only have the DMG for the magic items. For example having an Influence player action makes it less likely for a new DM to negate the choice for a player to negotiate or to have to handle it by the seat of their pants. I think we’ll see some wilderness exploration stuff and additional uses for tools become player facing too.
I'm a firm believer that all rules belong in the PHB. DMG should be for advice, guidance, and tools for running the game. Optional rules can be in the DMG.
Pick the version you like and play that. 2e for me. And that's the real message we should send to people new to the game coupled with: "The AD&D movement isn't controlled by WotC - it's controlled by you and your mates playing it."
True. WotC controls very little. That's the thing I love about D&D. I choose how much or how little I use from them. It's not like World of Warcraft or Warhammer 40k. Since it's neither a video game nor a competitive game, they control nothing beyond publishing a rule set. Once that rule set is my hands... your hands... it is ours. I remind you that TSR was far from noble, too. And your AD&D game has survived independently from their demise. That's the beauty of this game that we love.
As a new DM I would never buy another Dungeon Guide at full price. A lot of info but a poor teaching job for new DMs. Most I speak to say they prefer other books.
@@direden Difficulty is that their Dev team has little channels for feedback. The free Trove video game has more contact channels. I am willing to put up with the struggle since I am attached to the game after playing for 15 years with a friend though and I hope they eventually use a better teaching method to make it easier to learn for slower learners like myself.
It always seemed odd to me that the Duergar and Deep Gnomes got _referenced_ in the 2014 Player's Handbook, but not included. The Drow gets in, but the other Underdark races get left out? Lame. I'm hoping they include the Duergar and Deep Gnome. That way all the races with subraces have 3 choices.
@@trashman1358 That's just it, the stats are already available in another book. They really should have no reason not to print the Deep Gnomes and Duergar along with the other races in the 2024 Player's Handbook. They're adding the Goliath and probably the Aasimar already.
I included the deep gnome when I made up my point buy system to combine species mechanically. I also had to give the forest and rock gnomes spells at 3rd and 5th level to compensate. Adding Duergar would be a little more complicated to balance because they removed lineages (sub race) from dwarves and they don't get magic. As printed in other books there would be no reason to play the base dwarf over them.
@@artharionsanchez1793 well, just like any other book or RPG. However, in this case it will be a really good buy and I'm really looking forward to get the new core books (money milk or not)

As long as they’re pushing for an online dungeons and dragons, we are moving closer to the end. And then when it starts dying off, they’ll shut it down and that’ll be the end.. but in the meantime, they’ll be nickeling and diming us. Charging you for expansions charging you for skins. That’s where all heading.. Some of us play the games because we don’t want to play a video game. And they’re going to destroy it all.. one day the game will no longer exist. If they go this route I warn you now.. don’t let them talk you into believing this is a good thing because it’s not.
I have no interest in playing online. That might be part of THEIR plan... but I won't play that way. I still play at a table. You can see it behind me in every video.
They are going more digital, and you may get some of those options with the new VTT, but the rest of the game, I think, will continue to play the way we do today.
@@direden More and more they're going to push to require a subscription to D&D Beyond (or similar) to play.
