Rice candy! I'm half-Japanese and grew up eating Botan Rice Candy. Back then there was an actual small plastic toy like a tiny car. My college dorm mates reacted to the candy the same way Jay did, including being confused by the plastic wrapper. It's been... decades, and I still buy the occasional box! No real flavor, just nostalgia and a cute sticker.
I used to buy those rice candies with the edible wrapper at Pier One Imports over 50 years ago. They were weird then too! 😁
The first time I ever snorkled was in Maui. I remember screaming with excitement the colors of the fish were so bright and beautiful
Nice to see my hometown (I now live in Chicago)! 🙂
I enjoy the humour and info every time.
Great video as always!
Thank you for sharing all of your adventures with us. Keep rocking on. ❤
Right at the port in Hilo there is an Hoppa On Hoppa Off trolley and it goes to the same beach park, garden, downtown and a nice candy/cookie factory so if you don’t rent a car you can go to many of these locations
Per usual, great video
I really enjoyed this video. You showed me places I have never been to in Hilo. Thank you.
Really love hearing the love boat horn play…been on Regal and Sky and heard it every time. Thx for another great video😊🚢
The very cold spot where yiu swam was where the spring was flowing. We used to come across those almost everywhere at the beaches. Inevitably,.there was always a cold spring water flow. Brrr...
I plugged all those places into Google maps and with the exception of Carlsmith Beach park, it all looks very walkable. So nice you had a local "GUIDE" to show you around town!!
Your pronounciation was fantastic. A bit of history on Liliu'okalani Park. When I was a kid, it was called the Japanese Tea Gardens. I think in the 80's the name was changed.
The first time I had Tamo Ame candy was at the New York worlds fair when I was 14 years old from one of the Asian exhibits! I thought it was amazing that you ate the wrapper! I still find it from time to time and always get some!
Tomoe Ame was my very favorite candy. The best part was the melting paper!
Great vid as always
😂😂😂 it’s the wrapper for me 😋💕💕
We loved using turo in Juneau--we got to visit the shrine of St Therese and zip around town.
Matson shipping everywhere! My family name … dad would call for dinner reservations and we’d get a table right away even if the place was booked up. Love the Big Island, especially the north coast. Haulala village is so picturesque and classic. Polulu lookout is iconic and a must do. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
OMG I use to love getting botan rice candy when I was a kid 40 year ago. What you had is probably some rip off, but cool to see that stuff exist still. Should have been in a Munch Pak. Also love to see all the cool stuff you visited in Hilo need to go there!
We've seen so many cool turtles at Carlsmith! Love the Big Island!
The Princess logo is the Seawitch
The beach is giving me Gilligans Island vibe.👋💕🇦🇺
Try the fried mochi balls if you find them they are usually on a thin bamboo stick and are delicious! Also look out for the Portuguese donuts!
I gave them some to try. Some poi balls & some haupia balls from a local food truck. They seemed to like it 🤙🏼
I wanted them to try the malasadas as well but I couldn’t find any fresh ones that was nearby 😔
We are considering a HAL 18 day trip to Hawaii next year, but not sure we will like 10 sea days. Interesting to see how your trip goes. Thanks for uour vlogs
Glen levet (pronunciation) is Scotch. Hubby likes it.
Love your videos!!! My wife and I are doing the same cruise to Hawaii next March, I also want to rent a car like you guys did . My question is how did you set the rental up? And with who?
Thank you for your help!!!
We use the Turo app/website for our rental needs!! :D
Thank you for you response!! I’ve never heard of this app, I guess I’m old and usually go to the traditional rentals. I will try this app, do you rent last min or can you rent earlier?
We’ve had decent luck renting a day or two ahead of time, but we usually reserve well ahead of time. I don’t know that I’d wait until the day-of since you’re dealing with private vehicle owners using Turo and they might not be able to accommodate.
@@parodeejay thanks I love that you folks rent and explore on your own. We haven’t cruised much , we on our 4th . usually we go on a paid excursion or if it’s to expensive we just walk. The Hawaii cruise the excursions are to expensive for us seniors so I want to drive and just see what I can see!
Those were Muscovy DUCKS! They are super friendly and make great pets!

Inner wrapper. Wow
Candy with an edible outer wrapper and plastic inner wrapper would be cool.
Shinmachi was the village that was decimated in the '46 and '60 tidal waves (tsunamis).
Here for the old school Bugs Bunny cartoon reference (cat/mongoose)
Yep. Sheepdog and wolf. Clocking in. 😁
@@React2This Morning Ralph!
I watched a documentary thing on the two ladies kitchen their mochi looks so good
We say Shaved Ice in Oz!
After all those days at sea, did any of the passengers yell "Land Ho!!"?
We're traveling to Hawaii next month. Because I'm sure my wife wouldn't like so many sea days, we chose Pride of America. Looking forward to it.

Those were ducks lol
Who is the NCL lady walking with you? Did u get a tour guide with your car?
Funny, she was wearing an NCL shirt! No, Kyra is a local and friend of the channel. She gave us a massive list of ideas for things to do around Hilo, then it worked out that she had time that day to show us around to some of them!! :D
That class of ships doesn't have the horn, I don't think.
Yup only Royal-class ships have the Love Boat horn.
Is it too late to say I want that amazing prize sticker?
It is Glenn legit scotch
It wasn't a Hilo/copter spin
Those are Moscovy ducks. Lots of them here in FL. Poor babies are NOT attractive. Just remember never feed ducks bread. Not good for them
I have to say, after watching several of your vlogs on a Princess ship, I'm really not feeling their MDR menu's. I really like soups and their soups don't look good at all. (NCL soups are fantastic in comparison). Can you get a good, normal soup in the buffet or International Cafe?
