My husband and I were some of those (way way way former) college students who worked in Alaska for Princess both at DPL AND MPL for several seasons (we also lived in Alaska). My husband was a driver and I worked in the tours division. Not trying to sound all “back in my day here” BUT I would never have imagined a situation where Princess would not have arranged transfer to help passengers to pick up replacement luggage. We did all kinds of things to try to support passengers with lost items, luggage, etc. even when it was the fault of the passengers. That being said (I’m gonna say it loud for the people in the back) PLEASE DON’T LET THIS DETER YOU FROM SEEING THE INTERIOR OF ALASKA! You don’t have to do with Princess or any tour group but it is so spectacular (especially in fall) please see it if you can!
My favorite memories of Alaska were on the land tour through Princess from Prudhoe Bay to Coldfoot to Fairbanks on the Dalton Highway. Reindeer rubbing their antler velvet off on the oil pipeline and a mama grizzly stopping the bus to cross the highway with her two cubs!!

Rough Point and the Marble house are on my list for this upcoming cruise in a few weeks. The lobster shack is delicious worth every penny! thank you for the all the details, i truly appreciate it.
For nature lovers we loved Rose Island & walking around & touring lighthouse Easy shuttle ferry was available!!
I loved Rough Point too! I feel like many people miss it because it’s not part of the other Mansion’s historical society. Newport is beautiful.
I have been a Princess fan too, but many of the changes and the attitudes toward travelers have made me perfectly willing to hear YOUR recommendations for alternatives. We'll probably keep our two upcoming Princess bookings but I'm ready to try cruising on a line that really wants me 🙂

When we were in Alaska, our bus driver said they need so much help in Alaska, the state is paying people to move to and work in Alaska. Again, this was from the bus driver so take that for what it’s worth. :)

I am familiar with the weather conditions that caused the carnival ship to skip Alaska as we sailed on Holland America Eurodam from Seattle two days later. The waves heading to Juneau on September 17th were 8-10 meters high said the captain and we were not feeling well and the ship had to cancel the Juneau stop for safety reasons. We had rocky seas 4 of 7 days with rain most days. Wonderful trip still but apparently the usual wonderful Pacific coast weather in September doesn't relate to the weather in Alaska after August. Live and learn.

On your Uber ride you went through Washington Square (they filmed Hocus Pocus II there) and at the top is the Old Colony house which was the capital building for Rhode Island and where the Declaration of Independence was read from the front steps.

I live in Newport RI…I’m so happy you were able to enjoy our town. Rough Point is spectacular. The Breakers is also phenomenal. It was a busy day in Newport because we had the International Boat Show going on.
Thanks for the look at Rough Point and the Marble House. Was in Newport last year with Princess. There was a major tender issue and by the time we got over, our excursion left without us. We were supposed to see these places.

Thanks again Allison for insight into #1. Alaska cruises/cruise tours, and #2. Our expectations on specifically Princess ships. I have been on 14 Princess Cruises, 3 Royal Caribbean, and 2 Disney, 1 Carnival, as well as a Hawaiian cruise on a now defunct cruise line in 2000. My experience is that since Covid so much has changed, both on land and sea. Prices have risen, services have been taken away. I have so far been satisfied with my last Princess cruise in March on Sky Princess, have one scheduled on Caribbean Princess in November.
Ok im sold..definitely need to book this cruise. Cant believe I lived so close (driving distance) and didn’t see everything this cruise has to offer..are you aware of other cruise lines that mimic this itinerary? Thanks so much Allison 😊

@LetsGoTravelTips 🥴🤣🤣🤣First let me tell you about some of my unexpectedly scary school field trips: a diamondback rattlesnake on a bus of third graders, a driver who drove through a forest fire that had jumped across the road, a different driver who went AWOL, abandoning me with 50 fifth-graders 100 miles from home, taking all our lunches and belongings with him, etc. Had YOU been our driver, I'm sure those things never would have happened! Though we'd definitely have fun together, I respectfully decline any opportunities that include school/tour buses where I have any responsibilities. It's much easier to ride in the back of the bus! 🚍 😉

Going on Emerald in Feb along the Panama Canal 🤞🤞 I had read that the ship was refurbished about 30yrs ago so I was curious how you found the look of the ship. Your cabin looked fine (from what I could see) but I was thinking more of the public part of the ship. Thx. Enjoy the rest of your cruise in my favorite part of the country
Emerald Princess was built in 2007, 16yrs ago and last refurbished 2019. Considering not operating during the height of COVID still should be in good condition. Where did you read last refurbished 30yrs ago?

I had a absolutely wonderful cruise on Celebrity to Greece. Great customer service. Had 5 with Princess..all very good but with the "stuff" they're doing lately ie changing prices after paying, taking away perks etc Also hearing the horrible customer service others are experiencing I doubt I'll cruise with them again 😢.
The J1 Summer Work Travel program, is the program that foreign college students can use to come and work for a period of 2-5 months in the US. Many students work in our National Parks. The program was suspended during covid and it has been slow to come back to pre-covid levels.Approved countries can have various restrictions as well. I have done 2 cruise tours in Alaska pre-covid, both in the month of Sept and those tours were awesome. So once staffing is back up to where it should be, Sept will be a glorious time to go. No crowds, fall colors and good weather....mostly.
Those poor people with luggage troubles! Sad that this was their first Princess experience. Even though the initial problem was due to airline/airport issues, they will always associate their negative experience with Princess. ☹️
Hi Anne, That’s what I thought too.
WiFi on Emerald Princess was awful. Took Hawaiian cruise 8/5/2023. We could not communicate via text to friends in adjoining cabins! There was no local tv broadcasts available for the last 5 days of the cruise. We’re to,d they were repositioning!!!! We’re in port in LA and still no local tv. The was the worst WiFi of all the many Princess cruises I’ve been on. Total rip-off and should have refunded part of that fee because service was awful.
On your cruise . How many ports require tenders?
It's NOT Princess's fault the luggage was damaged . It's Air Canada's fault . I know you said this at the end but it needs to be emphasized .
When you refer to WiFi, are you talking about just WiFi or internet access. All of the Princess with the Medallion has excellent WiFi, What makes a difference is internet access. WiFi and internet are not interchangeable. Just thought I would pass this on. We board the Emerald on Saturday the 23rd. Will just miss you. Our weather doesn’t look as good as you had.
Does anyone know if Enchanted Princess has Starlink? And how is the service going TransAtlantic? Also, if I have ship's wifi, can I text and email anytime I want or as much as I want?
