Your planner system is so refreshing, and I’ve heard great things about the remarkable! I stopped using my iPad for note taking because the screen would give me a headache and I would get easily distracted. It seems like the remarkable addresses both of those challenges with their screen and being a single task writing tablet. At one point, I also looked the kobo elipsa as well, but then I fell down the fountain pen / fancy paper hole. 😅 I agree there’s a difference with the sanzen paper. I thought there was something wrong with my VP recently, until I pulled out my Cousin from last year and realized it wasn’t the pen, but the paper that was different. :(
Yeah, the change is noticeable, and if I return to the Hobonichi a6, it will likely be used with my jet stream. But I’m still deep in my FP era so we’ll see. :)
Wow Liane, what a change up! I love how you’ve moved to the passport size. I have been using the Weeks now as my main planner for a few years, and I’m interested to see how I’ll feel about the change to Sanzen TRP in that book next year. I mostly use a highlighter and Uni Jetstream in that though, so I’m hoping I won’t have too big of an adjustment. There are so many great notebooks available in passport size, I’m interested to see if you decide to use a different extra notebook at any point in the year. Baron Fig has some good paper and I’m sure many more. And the remarkable tablet is awesome! What a game changer for work, and so cool to be able to have the handwriting ability and the digital organization! I’m very impressed with these tablets but have no use case, so I’m glad to live vicariously through reviews like yours. Thank you so much for sharing! 🤘🏼😸🧡🖋
I’ve tried my Jetstream and highlighter in the Sanzen and think it’s a great writing experience. In fact, I will likely use Sanzen only for ballpoints in the future. Thanks, Casey!
I agree with you about pens not gliding on the Sanzen paper, but I actually like that. A lot of the time on the Hobonichi TRP version, I felt that my pens would glide a little too easily, making it harder for me to write and causing me to have to grip my pen tighter. On other TRP brands, they usually have slightly less slip, like the new Hobonichi Sanzen paper.
Yeah, I can see how it would be a more enjoyable experience for others with the extra grip on the page because the FP’s did glide really easily along the page on old TRP.
I’ve bought Nolty planners from Amazon Japan in past years. Also other items not easily found in the US (I’m in Hawaii). One has to be careful on the Nolty listings though as the layout in each size/color option may be different - so important to look at the images after clicking on an option. I have a fountain pen option on my kindle scribe too so I understand, writes like a stub nib, so enjoyable. what Enjoyed the video! First time, you popped up in my suggestion.
Enjoyed the video, Liane! I had the same experience with a 52gsm sanzen notebook from Goulet. It makes most of my fountain pens feel a little scratchy. It's super useful to know that hobonichis feel the same way. I also had the same experience with 68gsm tomoe river paper! I use a Take A Note planner with 68gsm and love writing in it--my fountain pens feel super buttery in it, and the paper feels very plush. JetPens started carrying Nolty planners a couple months ago, you have successfully willed it into existence XD Wishing you the best on your Japan and Korea trip!
Soooo many people are leaving hobonichi due to the new Sanzan tomoe river I really like the GLP Creations The author notebooks with 68gsm tomoe river their cheaper than some but not the cheapest and they have beautiful leather covers I have one of each of them.. Youll have let me know if you ever try them they arent as small as a6 but I am thinking about getting the larger a4 model next month :)
Yea, sad that the original Tomoe River paper is not longer being made. I have tried the new one so I do not know the difference, but I didn’t dislike the new one. But there are so many other nice papers out there 😊
You’re so right! I bet if I started my FP journey in 2024 only knowing Sanzen paper, I would’ve been really happy with the set up. We are spoiled with all the lovely selection of quality papers out there, it’s a wonderland!
@@lianelikes yea, you are right. Let me tell you something, I even got surprised of how good “cheap” Japanese papers are such as those on Apica notebooks, or Campus Kokuyo papers.
@@lianelikes you are right, I quite enjoy them, specially my A5 little Apica one. I enjoy that paper quite a lot. But of course I also have Didori, Rhodia and other top brands because I want to try them. Sometimes I find some of the “fine” papers to be too smooth for my taste though and if I write on them with a pen that is also super smooth, then I kind of loose that feeling of interaction in between the pen and the paper that I like to feel, in those cases (but just in general as well) I think that papers like Apica are such a good option and value as well.
💙💙Hı from Türkiye.. I am happy to inform you about the Istanbul "Pen Fest" event, held at Çırağan Palace on 9-10 November 2024, where all pen lovers and companies in the world will meet. Thank you for the video.💙💙
Ah, I didn't know the Hobonichi paper changed, did they change the paper for all of their planners and notebooks this year? I didn't use fountain pens in my old Hobonichis, 2024 is my first year with them in this planner. I've had zero complaints so far 🤷🏼♀️
What I know is that the original Tomoe River paper is no longer made, the brand was bought and now another company is making them. So, it is actually almost imposible to get the original paper nowadays, you will only find them from old stock that are still around in very scarce numbers. All the companies that use Tomoe River papers these days, use the new paper which is different. Some people say that it is very different, other people say that the difference is not big.
All companies that used Tomoe River paper had it change, because Tomoe River sold to Sanzen and the formula changed. So yes, all Hobonichi and other TR paper products have changed.
I think the reason that Hobonichi switched to the Sanzen Tomoe River paper is because of the popularity of their planners and the fact that the paper is no longer being made. Their notebooks are still original tomoe river paper and will be until they run out; however, when they make the switch, they will let people know like they did the planners. Another place I found to get original tomoe river paper notebooks is wonderland 222.
@@lianelikes Yes, any of their notebooks that are 2023 or before. This year is Sanzen. They mark theirs saying which paper was used. I know you like the original, so if you can, I would stock up.
I think a Hobonichi will not really work as a planner for me sadly. I love the layout and everything about it, but the drying time for ink with fountain pens just doesnt give me the ability to jot something down and close it. Like, it's no problem to keep a planner open for a minute, but its just not practical as long as I'm using my favorite fountain pen and ink combo 😭
I use the Remarkable strictly for note taking, planning, but not for journaling. I can imagine using it for journaling in a pinch when I don’t have my physical notebook around.
You’re not gonna be able to get the old TRP either here soon. Any TRP from now on is going to be Sanzen TRP. Which for me works great and I don’t really see much of a difference
Yeah, I know :( so I’ve found that midori has worked for me in this season and who knows, I’ll likely return to Hobonichi with Sanzen paper next year. :)

Thanks for sharing your updated system! I am very tempted by the passport size TN, and I may invest in that for next year.
An excellent case for the ReMarkable setup.. I've never seen a use for myself but this would be perfect for your need. Pretty cool, thanks
Thanks for watching!
Hi Liane! for TN notebooks you might want to try Good Inkpressions they have really good TN notebooks in cream or white and its 68 gsm

Thank you! I was thinking of trying the Hobonichi A6 for 2025, but I guess not anymore, as I need a fountain pen-friendly paper.
Don’t get me wrong, it is still FP friendly and a strong choice! I just wasn’t feeling it when I made the video.

For future years: Jet Pens now carries Nolty planners. I keep considering them ☺️
Yes, I’ve seen that! They don’t carry the 9107 unfortunately but I’m really curious to see the whole lineup when I go to Japan soon!
This is so cool! I’ve always been so curious about the remarkable tablets!!!!
I use a lucky Chinese coin as a charm for my TN too ❤️ Can’t wait for your updates from your visit to the Traveler’s store!
That is so great! Where did you get your coin? Mine is a Korean bus coin from my dad’s hometown. 💗

Yes, you are right!!! Good eye! I’m testing it out right now and loving it! Do you have one?
