I met Loyle’s dad while he was doing construction on my house. A genuine guy, who thought Loyle had a good life after his mum had met his stepdad. Doesn’t justify why he didn’t keep in contact, but forgiving is loving. He said he was so proud of Loyle, and was so happy that I even listened to his music. This song brought me to tears hearing his pain, can’t even imagine how it made his dad feel. At least they will be in contact for the rest of their lives.
Anyone that doesn’t know about the back story to this album, if you listen closely to the tone that changes across the album and the lyrics (the music vids and visualisers also) you will realise that the whole album was about loyle first hating his dad with the first heavy track “hate” whilst in HGU at the end of the album he is saying “I forgive you” to try and make emends with his father, also here is a couple more track meanings, Nobody knows is about hating his roots (His dad) whilst polyfilla is about filling holes in his relationship between him and his dad, Homerton is about the conversation he had with his dad about his son (homerton was the hospital he was born in) Also HGU (song you are listening to) talks about chess as loyle played chess with his dad after his driving lessons leading to the chessboard HUGO merch. ( listen to the conversation at the end of hgu it talks about it. ) Hugo is a peice of art, 10/10 loyle, please continue to make music as good as this
Noone can capture and express pain the way Carner does, and still resolve it all in healing and love. This song is just incedible. Thank you for sharing it with us.
That crack in his voice at the end 😢 All that raw emotion & him having to wipe his eyes. To share that with we the audience. I found this a few months ago & keep coming back. Why is he being slept on here in the states? One of the absolute best tracks I've heard in this day and age of crap music. ❤
His emotion is so raw. The sentiment that he has for his father "I forgive you" resonates so much. And then the way he says "cause hurt people hurt people" at 1:57 is the gut wrenching thing that lets the tears come out.
Such a different energy from his previous colors performance Ice Water, so many deep feels here! I love his stage presence and lyricism! amazing as always, loyle ❤
the only reason i can't listen to this everyday is because I may end up crying everytime if I do. Such an emotional but powerful song yet to this day, I love it
It's been a long time I haven't checked on Loyle and here he is, looking a bit tired and marked by life. That's making him so relatable and his words resonate deeply.
Why is this my first time hearing this? I loved everything about this song. Took me back to a place in my childhood. Whew. I felt every word it been on replay for about a hour. I needed this !
I’ve been listening to Carner for a few years and he is a such a massive inspiration. This was a beautiful performance and you can tell it’s true healing for him. I love how he encapsulates his emotions so well. Got peace? Forever and always listening to your tunes. Much love man!
What a session, Loyle has been my favorite rapper for the last 3-4 years and the evolution of his lyrics have always been deep. Thx Loyle for your music and your love on this álbum
I hope one day I can meet my Dad. Left my life when I was about 18 months old never to be seen or heard from again. I hope to find him one day so the pain maybe isn't so bad anymore. I will keep trying.
We saw him at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2018 and we were blown away by his performance. And until today he delivers consistently good music and performances. Much love for Loyle
Feel this. Hurt people hurt people, said that with his heart on his sleeve, a piece of himself left in his music. Look forward to seeing Loyle in Bristol in March!
WOW! So much in one performance, definitely my favorite colors yet and I've been watching for ages... The lyrics, heart & soul in this! Can really feel every "I forgive you" ❤️

Yeah, I forgive you, I forgive you, I forgive you
After everything we've been through
Everything we seen
The Disney Channel on the screen
Yo, I can't forget the screams
Late at night, clinging to the beams
Wonder, is he understanding what I mean?
Saying don't go now, yo, please
'Cause I was starting to believe
The first twenty-seven years, a bad dream
Finally found my feet
Head low, walking through the streets
Had these headphones filling up with beats
My mind speaks, I'm hurt
Still rosy in my cheeks
Why do autumn leaves get to fall in peace
When it's falling down on me?
I keep my hands where you can see
'Cause I ain't being fallen by police
Felt you calling in my jeans
My back pocket splitting in the seams
I couldn't start the car, find the keys
Yeah, yo, I forgive you, I forgive you, I forgive you
And I hope that it continues after everything you've been through
Living a life that was sinful
Slicing through my belly like a ginsu
The birthday cake I bring you
Know you feel, know you're 'bout to cry
I can see it in the corner of your eye
There ain't nothing you can hide
Locking off the phone out of pride
Doesn't matter if you blow it in the skies
'Cause I'm knowing why, like pawn to E4
Bishop C4, that's light work
Queen to F3, I can see more
My best days
Still my heart banging out my chest plate
Queen to F7, that was checkmate
Hoping that my pen breaks
So I can finish this and press play
Listen to decisions that my pen makes
'Cause Ben stayed
Yeah, I'm saying Ben stayed
The next day, the next day then the next day
Yo, I forgive you, I forgive you, I forgive you
'Cause I know that it's within you
And I'm better when I'm with you
Tryna reconnect as we begin to
Understand the reasons that you're sinful
'Cause Earth's evil, yeah
'Cause hurt people, hurt people
Especially the ones who weren't equal
The burnt treacle
Wonder what would be expected in the sequel
Except for the cycle to repeat 'cause that's the default
That life's lethal
Watching history repeat itself
So I can rewrite the ending and the prequel
And figure out the bit in the middle until it keeps all
Of my people together and living peaceful
Trust, 'cause ain't no Jack, ain't no beanstalk
Ain't no fairy tales, places we walk but we fought
Just for this, just for smiles, yo, that he brought
Still I'm lucky, yo, that we talk
