  • We got stuck in sande when off-road in Portugal with our Land Rover Defender 110and failed when using for the first time in sand our Maxtrax boards. A fun family time off-roading and overlanding Portugal and Spain during summer time. We have a modified Land Rover Defender with powerful mods and converted in a 4x4 camper. This allows us to explore, go offgrid, and have fun anywhere we go even when it's heavily loaded for longer overlanding trips like this one. Enjoy the video, like, share, and comment below :)

I came across your channel whilst on night shift (I work for the UK Coastguard!) and have just finished watching your videos from your trip to Spain and Portugal. Thanks for sharing your family trip and giving us an incite into your overlanding trip! What a wonderful time you all had and it is great to see your children enjoying an experience so few children will have. To engage them in nature as you do and not take them to an overcrowded hotel or campsite is a great way to bring them up. They appear to get on so well and help out willingly (I hope!) with setting up your camps and are learning some great life skills and will create memories that will last a life-time. My holidays are spent cycling and walking in the French Alps or in North Wales where I live. and your enthusiasm to show the highs and lows (breakdowns, getting lost, cost!) for overlanding and getting into nature has sparked something in me to engage in when I retire and eventually move to the French Alps. Keep the videos coming as they are a great source of information, imagination from a family who chose to do things differently!!! Thank you 😃

Thank you so much for this kind message. We all enjoy a lot this time spent outdoors as a family. Yes they help a lot and do so since their very young age, so it's kind of a routine for all of us ;) I can only recommend to spend more time outdoors doing something you like, just like you are already doing, it's way much easier than anyone can think.

One of the easiest ways to get a wheel out of deep soft sand is to use a wheel adaptor (hook) on a hi-lift jack. Place the jack on a plate to stop it sinking, attach the hooked adaptor to the jack and hook it onto the wheel and lift the wheel straight out of the sand hole. This is a lot safer than trying to jack the car, as on a Defender, by the time the suspension extends enough to lift a wheel, you're already precariously high. Once the wheel is out, backfill the hole and you can place your MaxTrax under the wheel for added traction in taking off.

Also you can take a dumpy bag, fill it with sand and use it to winch off.

Lower your tyre pressures and then momentum. When you get stuck dont keep spinning wheels. Stop dig out, use max trax. If not effective drop tyre pressure further and try again. Tyre pressure is everything, you will be amazed how easy it is with far lower tyre pressures. We would start at 18 PSI and work our way down to 10 PSI if we had to.

Very cool adventure! A trick to get up a hill or out of sand is to bury your spare tire (or ground anchor / Deadman) then connect it to your winch. Then just winch your self forward.

    warts and all. Great stuff.
There are quite a few details that must be addressed..
1st, is the 'footprint' of your tyres. Pick a pressure and lower the tyres beneath what you believe to be the heaviest part of your vehicle... front or rear.
Then, as the tyre is at rest, measure the points of contact between where the front of the tyre and the rear of the tyre come of off the ground.
Use this dimention to deflate the other two tyres. Makes an amazing difference. So correct pressures.
2nd, when attempting to un bog yourself, choose the path of least resistance... in your instance, you should have gone backwards. It lifts you out of the holes and because you have allready carved a track, is usually easier.
3rd, try not to spin your wheels on the Max Traxx... spinning wheels equals zero traction.
Finally, dont leave it so long to stop. If you are spinning your wheels and digging down, incorrect tyre pressures.... and we are only discussing your current situation.
Remember 'As slow as possible, as fast as necessary'.
    Ps: Great video! Beautiful countryside!
    Cheers for sharing.

OTF. Good learning experience madam ! The best Land Rover aftermarket tyres are Dick Cepek from a good old US of A. They make all the unusual sizes such as 255/85R16 "Fun Country" all-terrain for your Defender 110 to drive in sand dear. A dual ply sidewall helps to float over the softness and use the rim size diameter as a starting point to lower pressures like 'GrizzlynBear' here Downunder ? V.

  • @svenfokkema3440

Couple of suggestions: reduce pressure even further (to 7-8 psi), if you have use 4 maxtrax, if not use the 2 for the rear wheels. You might also want to check whether the suspension (in the rear) is adequate for the total weight of your car.

It wasn't clear to me in the video but was the fuel tank dragging in the sand?
If so, next time use the maxtraxx on the rear tyres to get it up and clear of the sand.
And... when bogged, you can always help by pushing. Sometimes that bit of extra human push-power is all that's needed to get going again.
But otherwise for soft deep sand its all about going as fast as you can and use momentum to carry you through.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  2 роки тому

Thanks for the message. Yes the fuel tank started to drag in the sand. It s what we thought afterwards about putting the maxtrax under rear tires.
