One small correction: only the base model Forester cannot recline rear seats, all other trims have a little adjustment!

I understand your take, but have to say I don't really feel it rings true. The Subaru Forester is quite unapologetic in focusing in practicality. Windows are big because they are to look through. Doors are large and open wide because they are there so you can get in. Shape is boxy because that gives you the most space etc. It's design is a consequence of those decisions, and its "functional uglyness" sets it apart from other sleeker SUV's who have started to look more and more alike. It knows what it is and kind of owns it. Because of that, it is one of the rare SUV's that actually has a personality.

      That's a great interpretation Manny.
I chose the Forester over other similar Vehicle options for those exact reasons.
I'm a function over form type of person.
I'm buying an SUV with intentions to use it appropriately.
I like driving on the beach and doing some mild offroading.
I will be taking it camping & carting around my Dogs.
I've had big lifted 4WD Utes (im Aussie 😂) with huge tyres and it just isn't practical or required for what I plan doing and the Forester has just enough off-road capability to fulfil my needs.
Most other cars in the class simply do not.

Just picked up a Crosstrek. Just like the Forester, it's like going back to basic. Granted, there are modern amenities and functionality that it needs, especially the safety features, useful for roadtrips.

I'm actually considering getting a Subaru Forester. For those exact reasons. I currently drive a Honda Element it's getting a bit tired. As roomy as the Element is, it difficult for older passengers to get in it especially if they have to sit in the back.

You also have to consider the age and maturity of the driver. I've had several "fun" and "headturner" cars when I was younger. They had their moment. As I've gotten older, I'm expressing my individuality in different ways. I've grown a strong sense of identity. I don't need my car to do that for me. What I need a car for is comfort, consistency, spaciousness, ease of use, and dependabilty. The Forester checks almost all those boxes. Those other "sexier" cars tend to have issues in one or more of these areas. For me, this car represents the emotion of peace - a steadfast but quiet companion who's always there for me. And there's nothing wrong with that. The reviewer will probably realize that as well as he gets older.

This is an absolutely outstanding review of a car, the best I've seen while researching vehicles. We're looking to buy now and this confirmed our suspicions about the Forester being great (and about us being boring people). We were looking at the Crosstrek, Kia Seltos, etc., drifted to the larger size, and once we experienced the visibility and airy vibe of the Forester, driving something like an MX-30 seemed like being stuck in a basement, even if the interior is beautiful and it's fun to drive.

I looked at the Crosstrek, RAV4 and the Forester.
I chose the Forester Touring. It’s off road prowess is far superior over the Rav and it’s much more roomier than the Crosstrek.
I hope you bought the Forester !

Regarding the manual controls and basic tech; look, I'm a total techie, in fact my whole career centers around tech. But I got both a Forester and Crosstrek last year and this is my preferred layout. I despise tech-heavy cockpits. When using physical knobs and buttons, you get immediate feedback with minimum driver distraction. I can adjust all my audio and temperature settings without needing to look at the controls. Touchscreens demand your eyes, and that's irksome. Also, stylistically, I don't understand why my car needs to look like an iPhone. Many car screens today look like they took a big tablet awkwardly sticking out of the dash. It's ugly.

Researched this car segment for the last 2 months, my findings, - 5th gen forester rated #1 in safety and readability over all others including RAV, trial hawk, honda and bronco. That said, it has been a long road for Subaru from the CVT tranny , oil consumption, head gasket issues of past generation vehicles. At 6'3, CR just announced the Forester is #1 with tall drivers as well, no surprise as the "green house" visibility is very attractive. All the safety dings can be disabled permanently, with the exception of engine on/off at stop. After market solution will solve that as well. So, I will be picking up my Subaru Forester Wilderness / pearl white next week. Comfortable driving on and off road, safety and readability, looks, honest service advisors that I have visited with during this time, all have pushed me this direction. And finally driving my daughters 2017 Forester premium, sold me on being a Subie owner. Suggested maintenance to ensure long life; 30k diff (F/R) service, 40k CVT Transmission service, and oil changes every 4k.
Compared to the Outback, Off road analysis/videos show the turbo in the Outback gets totally in the way of performance when climbing, as the Forester's new gearing and software changes bring much more to the equation over the turbo, in my opinion. ua-cam.com/video/ZF_JtgJ7aKQ/v-deo.html
No rock climbing, but adventuring, all day long...
    HAPPY TRAILS

At 400 miles I ran over something on a tight interstate and TPI system immediately indicated severe damage and pressure loss leading me to get off the road quickly. Roadside Assistance was outstanding. Just please put a full size spare in these cars with the AWD system!!

Emotion from a vehicle and most material objects I would argue has more to do with the memories made with said object more so than the object itself. Being the highly capable crossover that the Forester is naturally lends itself to memory making adventures. Thus creating a feedback loop of more and more positive emotions with each new roadtrip.

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  2 роки тому +3

This is true too, but that's more so an attachment to the object, a different kind of emotion, but stronger than the type I was referring to in the video for sure. Some of the most boring cars I've owned still became cherished for what they took me through. The car's character is more so the emotion factor I was getting at here. Not the emotion that is derived from the attachment to the car after memories made!

Thank you for your excellent video. We just bought a two-year old certified pre-owned 2022 Forester Limited from our local dealer (20K miles). This is the 2nd Forester we've owned (our other was a 2014), and the 5th Subaru owned in our family, so we certainly are familiar with the brand. One of the things I really like about the forester is the higher ride, user friendly features, great front legroom, good mileage, smooth ride, and the excellent visibility around the car while driving. It's much quieter and nicer in every aspect than our 2014. Many cars we've looked at these days have very poor visibility behind the driver's position. We wouldn't consider the Wilderness because we would have no use for a vehicle equipped as it is. Although it is an attractive car, it's functionality makes it "beautiful" to me.

  • @oldatarigamer
    @oldatarigamer 2 роки тому +14

Its interesting how each manufacturer kinda has their niche in this area to a very refined level. If Subaru offered a turbo in this car, it would be clearly head and shoulders above the competition. Visibility is tremendous in this car - so if you have a Forester and drive another in this class the loss in visibility is noticeable.

You described the attributes and character of the Forester perfectly. It's not meant to excite the driver. My previous car was a '93 Toyota MR2 Turbo which was a stylish car with high performance. Those attributes were the reason I bought and drove it for 22 years. Eventually my age and bad back forced me to reconsider my transportation. I wanted a practical car with lots of headroom/visibility and storage (think Costco runs) and reliability. But I didn't want to totally sacrifice the power I greatly loved in my MR2 (0-60 mph in 5.7 sec). After research and test drives I settled on
a new 2017 Forester XT which has a turbo motor (0-60 mph in 6.8 sec). It has delivered all the attributes I was looking for, and I am very happy with it. I'm disappointed Subaru dropped the turbo engine as a Forester option; that decision eliminates the possibility of my upgrading to a new Forester sometime in the future.

I Love my 19 Forester Touring, Sephia Bronze with Brown leather interior.
I had it pinstriped in burgundy metallic. It really looks sharp.
I bought my 19 Forester on 12/11/22 with only 4,700 miles on it.
It’s not as fast as my 11 Rav 4WD Limited with the 3.5 V6, but I was actually surprised how quick the 2.5L boxer engine is.
I do know that my Forester is superior over my Rav 4WD in the 5-6 feet of snow we get every winter.

You conduct excellent, detailed reviews - thank you very much! Liked and subscribed.
I personally owned Toyota vehicles for the past 31 years, and 40+ years if counting my wife's history with Toyota vehicles. But, my loyalty to Toyota ceased in 2022 when every Toyota dealership and salesperson that we consulted in Southern California was charging ~$5k USD over MSRP for 2022 Toyota vehicles. Salespeople wouldn't even quote us a price over the telephone so that we could agree on one, secure a certified check from our credit union, then visit the dealership to purchase the car outright.
But, it all worked out better than I could've imagined. I always loved Subarus (I owned a 1984 Hatchback) and was due for a leave from Toyota. I'm extremely happy with my 2022 Subaru Forester Premium, the price for which was quoted over the telephone and e-mailed to me (the actual window sticker with price and packages), and for which I did not pay $0.01 over MSRP. Subaru of American and my local dealership and salesperson have earned my brand loyalty henceforth.

So, I'm doing research for an SUV of this type.
My shortlist at the moment consists of:
    1. Toyota RAV4 (only comes in MHEV or PHEV) but it's the best seller and you can't go wrong with it. Plenty of trims to choose from as well.
    2. Subaru Forester - only comes as eBoxer (so MHEV) where I'm from and only with the 150HP option. But it's a great all-rounder.
    3. Mazda CX-5 - only one without a hybrid option but looks like the most fun of the pack.
    4. Hyundai Tucson/Kia Sportage - they're basically the same car, with distinctive looks and new features for 2022.
    5. Ford Kuga (Escape in the US): has all the features but not sure about the reliability.
What I need the car for:
    - family outings (some off-roading but it'll be mostly on the road)
    - grocery shopping
    - travel from state to state/country to country in a comfy vehicle with good consumption
    - a car that I can keep for 10+ years -> this one bugs me because if I have to take into consideration what laws will come into effect then I'll have to go for a PHEV. And I totally despise EVs!
    - good safety features
    - great reliability/warranty
    - mandatory AWD and if possible manual not automatic.
At the end of the day emotion will probably play a part as well.
Anyone care to chip in with some thoughts/suggestions? Thanks!
Note: I've driven the older generation Tucson, old & new Focus and a few Toyotas (didn't find them very fun).

I really like the autumn green, but I’ll probably get the brilliant bronze exterior with the brown leather interior.
During our winter months, it’s simply too cold to have our vehicles washed on a regular basis. The Bronze will show less dirt .
We average 4-5 feet of snow every winter. We live 5 miles from town and on a private road. We have to plow and maintain our road and seldom does the county plow the county road out where we live.
My wife’s Outback is far superior in traction over my Rav 4WD. When our Rav wears out, then we’ll be purchasing a Forester for me.
I will sadly miss the 269 hp 3.5 V6 in the Rav.
The Rav actually gets better mpg than our 2.5 182 hp Outback. Our Rav gets 24-25 mpg on the freeway whereas the Outback only gets 22 mpg. I guess I’ll have a HKS, Borla or a Flowmaster exhaust put on our Outback to try to get better mpg.

I've searching for a Rav4, but can't find any, or any for a good price. Or a hybrid variant. Looking at Forester seems like a nice alternative, but the local dealership didn't have a single new car in the entire lot. Not one single car. They had one car in the showroom. Some Toyota Solterra. I might have to keep looking for yet another alternative. Not paying above MSRP, I can't wait. Don't perpetuate scalperships unless you have no choice and must need a car. I can't wait longer if needed.
Even taking a look at Outlanders because they actually have them in stock.

Your content and production is getting better and better. Quick question, I didn’t notice you select the “Sport Sharp” transmission mapping for your 0-60 time test, not that it would likely make much of a difference but I wonder if it might “hold” the ratio to a higher RPM and squeeze out a little more umph and drop a couple of 10ths?

      @Realistick  2 роки тому +1

Thank you, I was in sport mode. 9:50 Only the Forester Sport and Wilderness get Sport Sharp. Honestly, I think it might be quicker in regular mode. My reasoning is that the Sport modes usually make the cars more responsive, but if you brake torque and then floor it to sixty, it should be the same. However, it might not try to mimic shifts in regular mode, which might make it quicker? I was debating making a video on this but I don't know if many would watch it, I just want to know the answer.
