You guys are super walkers....I'm 49 today and I walk in a grocery store all day on the con of the crete, now days I just take two steps out of the mohicular and I'm at me final destination. Me hat is off to ya fellas...keep the walking sticks a purring...
Thanks for sharing y'all 's adventure, looks like a great time. It not always easy to keep going on when your feet hurt, sometimes it's mine over matter. If you don't mine it doesn't matter ! Just keep on trucking .........
I went on one of those bridges like that a few years ago. By the time I crossed I felt so sea sick :-). I could feel it all over again watching you cross. Fun stuff. That's for sharing your adventures with us Shug!
Ok The Maple King scared me with that slow stick action. Ken is too good at that weird mountain man thing! Lol. You guys crack me up. Thanks for being you!
Those litter bugs get everywhere, such a shame, Gods beautiful creation marred by the hand of man. Man that snake was quick. What kind of snake was it. Looked angry. I really liked to see you both enjoying good longstanding friendship with each other. That's precious. Thanks again shug. By the way, you both do exceptionally well for guys in thier late fifties, I'm not far behind ya. Top job.
Maple King Early Camo as seen at 9:55 available in your fine local forest now. Nice trip! Nuthin' like a clean ramble to flush the gunk from 'tween the ears. Happy Birthday Shug!
Shug and Hickory, I agree completely with the philosophy you guys had. Take an hour long break when you need it, put your feet in the water, smell the flowers, and enjoy the hike in some beautiful forestry. We met people that were trying to do the whole thing in 4 days with 18-20 mile days. That's just not for me. Like you, I can't pass up a picnic table. That's a luxury in the piney woods. We camped for the night at the same place you took a break at the Toxaway River. I felt your pain while you were describing Heartbreak Ridge. Can't wait for Part 4. Swampfox
+shugemery A little trivia on the Virginia Hawkins Waterfall. It was known as Double Falls until late 2004 when the Foothills Trail Conference named the falls for Virginia Hawkins, long time executive secretary of the FTC.
"It's early in the morning and that's when I'm most honest" hah! Enjoy the journey and walk your own walk. I believe you told me that once. I have the maps out as this series plays on. You and brother Hickery have made me hungry for some woods time. Carry on...
Loved the video, as usual, but I didn't come away with the feeling that you enjoyed our trail very much. I hate if it's so, but what the hell, to each his own, lol. I love it, personally.
Lol just got back from a 3 day hike that turned into an extremely long day hike. That snake you were poking reminded me of a water moccasin I saw. He was a big boy. It's always cool seeing wildlife like that.
I love how you're considering pushing on to Laurel Fork Falls and Hickory is crashed on the bench. After going over Heartbreak Ridge I know why you camped at Rock Creek. Give OUT! Plus, those few miles on to Laurel Fork are tough also.
Enjoyed another terrific video Shug.Have you ever looked into the Allagash wilderness waterway in Maine? I did it back in 2008 it's terrific if you are up to paddling and want to rest your feet.
I've watched your FHT hike videos several times I finally heard Kent say "Bridge Over the Gulley Kwai" (0.30) Too funny, I will alway refer to that spot that way!!
Shug, how about an episode about hiking boots, socks, and taking care of your feet? What works for you? The older I get, the more I notice my feet after a long hike. There must be others just the same?
As usual, another great trilogy. I would love to take my Sheppard, I've never noticed any domestic animals, let alone few people. Over the last year or so of video enjoyment, I have yet to see an implements of the knife or such thing, and I knowyou can juggle, was hoping one day to see you throw:). Keep-up with these inspiring posts, I have now done several milesalong the American River and into the Sierras with my faithful companion thanks to you.
+shugemery Oh my, you never disappoint, and a south-paw too-boot. I think I hike and get a-away for thesame reason. The world has gone into crazy mode, and the only way to maintain some sense of 'what I consider' normalcy, is to vacate the premises. I'm sixty this year, and its a sad state of affairs.
Ok....I always see you guys kickin back on these small camp stools. can you guys give me a n idea of what barand you prefer. Thanks.....and great video as always. My brother and i were planning to hike the FHT this fall and I beleive you guys have givin us another reason to do it.
Let me educate you on Virginia Hawkins Falls. Virginia Hawkins was the longtime executive secretary for the Foothills Trail Conference. The number of hours that she spent volunteering and working on the Foothills trail can not begin to be measured.
Awesome trip... loving your sharing of the adventure so far. ?... why do you call your bro K "Hickery"... is it just the nickname for him , like "Shug"? Always wondered this. At 58, that Heartbreak Ridge would have been "Heart Attack Ridge" for me... then you'd have to call in another Blackhawk to carry my butt out! Lovin' every minute of it from my living room! Tired feet in the river.... Whoo Buddy! ...so nice! Hot toes...Bad toe...Angry Toe. ..Toes should be issued with a 500,000 Mile warranty... am I right? Loving the trip, guys. Can't wait to share in the final legs.
+shugemery Where did you get the map you were showing your route on. Looked nice. I'd like to get one in order to get an early (!EARLY!) start on planning... Great vids too. Thanks for sharing
I did Table Rock to Sassafras in July with a buddy in his 20's. It was rough! We are heading back out in a couple weeks to do Oconee to Bad Creek. BTW, how do I get a Hickery T-shirt?
Your right as you get older the down is a body beat down. I would rather climb all day then go down hill. I go back in the fall the finish the LT and I know the downs are going to beat me up. It will be time for vitamin I better known as Motrin. This looks like a great trip. Take care
We did one stash. See it a 7:40 in this video.....ua-cam.com/video/f7fkcaQDYK8/v-deo.html Did not really need to but it is fun to get there and have new food.

+Larry Conley You guys were smart to do 8 days. We had to hustle to get visit time. We wanted time to get to Linville Gorge too.
+shugemery A little trivia on the Virginia Hawkins Waterfall.
It was known as Double Falls until late 2004 when the Foothills Trail Conference named the falls for Virginia Hawkins, long time executive secretary of the FTC.

Enjoy the journey and walk your own walk. I believe you told me that once.
I have the maps out as this series plays on. You and brother Hickery have made me hungry for some woods time. Carry on...
+CampfireTalk Hard to lie in the morn.......hope you get some woods time and that is no lie.
You guys! No need to apologise for breaks, take em as they're needed and enjoy the hike. In my opinion, you're doing GREAT!
+Terri Carlson We are apologetic by nature! The breaks were so good.
Outstanding, I always take out more than I take in Too!! Good Man.
Whooooo Buddy)))
Loved the video, as usual, but I didn't come away with the feeling that you enjoyed our trail very much. I hate if it's so, but what the hell, to each his own, lol. I love it, personally.
We totally loved it! Just our style
That hat.....I must have that hat. The wild magic of the maple king's regal top hat.
+Dan Weiss His hats adapt to the environment.
Lol just got back from a 3 day hike that turned into an extremely long day hike. That snake you were poking reminded me of a water moccasin I saw. He was a big boy. It's always cool seeing wildlife like that.
+Dylan Childers Whoooooo Buddy))))
Looks like a great place to visit. Sounded like something out of American Werewolf in London at 11 min section.
+Renegade Scot It was a wild sound baying...kinda spooky.
I love how you're considering pushing on to Laurel Fork Falls and Hickory is crashed on the bench. After going over Heartbreak Ridge I know why you camped at Rock Creek. Give OUT! Plus, those few miles on to Laurel Fork are tough also.

Maple King came on the set looking fierce. My guess would be he was mad at Hickory for going to pee behind you in the first part of this series.
+Kallapryy Maple King has issues.
Your right as you get older the down is a body beat down. I would rather climb all day then go down hill. I go back in the fall the finish the LT and I know the downs are going to beat me up. It will be time for vitamin I better known as Motrin. This looks like a great trip. Take care

Something me and Hickery have always done since we were boys. Not even sure what it means.....

Funny old men on torture tour... Brilliant entertainment!

Was that a confirmed sighting of The Maple King?
+Survivalist2008 ten-four
Hey I was wondering if you packed food for the whole trip or did you have any staff's along the way?
We did one stash. See it a 7:40 in this video.....ua-cam.com/video/f7fkcaQDYK8/v-deo.html

Maybe near the Duke Power site

If ya gotta go down a lot of stairs, try doing it backwards next time. You might be surprised...
Have done that when my knee was real bad. Does help.
The maple king look angry. The gators you're wearing what brand?
+Alfonso Casillas Outdoor Research.
What knee brace do you use and how many miles did you average each day?

+Chris Jackson His wife taught him that. ;)
+Chris Jackson A good creed.
Blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance by the Maple King, or maybe his cousin who doesn't like being seen so much.
+Paul Mitchum He Lurks.....
So the questions IS - did you take out the Beenie Weenie & Org Crush Cans??
Yes we did. We were scouts so it is ingrained. We always end up toting out a lot of trash. "thats OK...we got it"
Hey where did he get the new hanky?
It is half of Hickerys....somewhere in the viseos we show him cutting it in half and sharing with me.
